Reds in position for 4-game sweep of Brewers

By JR Radcliffe / Special to MLB.com | 4/22/2015 11:00 PM ET

Two starting pitchers will look to get on track in Thursday's matinee series finale between the Brewers and Reds, who won the first three games of the series, at Miller Park.

Reds right-hander Homer Bailey will try to bounce back from his first start, when he allowed five runs in 5 2/3 innings to St. Louis after opening the season on the disabled list while recovering from right-forearm surgery.

Milwaukee's Kyle Lohse has been in a more concerning funk, having allowed 18 runs in 15 2/3 innings, good for a 10.34 ERA.

Things to know

• Lohse, who took the loss in a 6-2 setback against Pittsburgh on Saturday, didn't allow his 18th earned run of the season in 2014 until his ninth start. He finished the 2014 season 13-9 with a 3.54 ERA.

• Brewers outfielders have hit Bailey well in the past. Ryan Braun has six extra-base hits among his 11 in 31 at-bats, part of a 1.089 OPS. Khris Davis has a 1.476 OPS over 18 at-bats.

• The outing marks the beginning of Milwaukee's fourth turn through the starting rotation. Heading into Wednesday, the team's 5.31 ERA was last in the National League, with Miami (5.28) the only team within a full run of that mark.

• The Brewers are only the 14th National League team to lose 13 times in the span of its first 15 games, and the first since the 1998 D-backs.

So why is Schafer starting again? Isn't the whole reason Parra is on the team is to played for the injured OF'ers!?!?

Parra might be banged up a little. Otherwise it makes no sense

Was just coming in here to comment on that. Good thing we're paying him 6 million to start Schafer instead. RR is a total joke.

Again, maybe Parra is banged up....but otherwise this is part of the curse of Ron and his predilection for small samples:

I can just hear him: "we like Logy here, he's swinging a hot bat, 2 for 4 in the last 2 games with a Double."

Ugh

Honestly flip a coin. They both stink offensively and play good defense. Who cares?

Braun has been having some nice long at bats but really nothing to write home about. Feels like he's so close to actually breaking out but then I watch another GIDP ball.

Parra career 93 OPS+, Shafer career 65 OPS+. One stinks, one is a teeny bit below average.

Cincy now up 2-1

I feel like I cannot lose this season.

If the Brewers win, I'm happy because they are my favorite team

If the Brewers lose, I'm happy because I'm dreaming of a #1 overall pick in the Draft

Watching Joey Votto on a regular basis would be fun.

What a cannon by Maldonado. There's something we don't get from Lucroy. Wow what a throw.

Shoot. A Braun gapper that is snagged by Billy Hamilton would easily scored on that Lind double.

YES SIR! Brewers take the lead!!!!!

So happy we made a lead off walk pay. They seem to always do against us.
