Brennan’s extra-inning heroics give Manatees series win over Dunedin

The Brevard County Manatees and Dunedin Blue Jays went well into the night on Sunday, to decide the rubber game of their three game series at Space Coast Stadium. After a rain-delay of just over two hours and extra innings, Manatees third baseman Taylor Brennan singled to center, scoring Omar Garcia and giving the Manatees a 3-2 win, in 12. The official game time was five and a half hours.

 

Dunedin (5-6) was in control of things for much of the night. Dawel Lugo’s two-run single against Brevard County starter Hiram Burgos with one out in the fifth, staked the visitors to a 2-0 lead. It was a long night for Burgos, who somehow saw himself through five full innings.

 

“He gave up those runs when he was near the end of his pitch count,” said Manatees manager Joe Ayrault. “After battling through that first inning, throwing 36 pitches, it was a good job locking it in and getting those other innings in.”

 

Burgos pitched well, despite being on the short-end of a 2-0 score. He allowed just four hits, walked four and struck out eight. Only one of the runs was earned. Clint Terry came in and pitched the sixth and seventh innings, before giving way to the rain. He allowed two hits and struck out one.

 

“He’s our rain man, Ayrault said. “That’s the second time Terry’s been thrown into a game that had a rain delay. Had one in St. Lucie too, so he did a heck of a job with two scoreless.”

 

The rain delay seemed to be just what the Manatees needed, as they looked like a different team once play resumed with the bottom of the seventh. Garrett Cooper and Rafael Neda each singled to start the frame. Angel Ortega was looking to sacrifice and ended up reaching first safely, to load the bases.

 

Garcia drew earned a walk and an RBI, to make it 2-1. Chris McFarland followed and hit one back to the mound. Brady Dragmire went home for one and catcher Mike Reeves went to first, to complete the double-play. Brennan came up with two runners on and watched as a ball got by Reeves, far enough to score Ortega and tie the game 2-2. Dragmire was saddled with the blown save for his efforts.

 

“That’s one thing about these guys, they've got a lot of character,” said Ayrault. “Clint Coulter came up to me before we even started that thing and said we’re winning this game tonight. We’re gonna come back, score a couple and we’re gonna win this ballgame.”

 

In the eighth, Manatees reliever Preston Gainey picked up where Terry left off, with two scoreless innings of his own. He walked two and struck out three. “Gainey had plus stuff tonight,” said Ayrault. “He mixed his pitches and attacked the hitters.”

 

Casey Medlen, who came into the game with two saves, pitched the 10th and 11th innings. He allowed two hits, but got the job done. “He did his usual thing, filled the zone and worked out of a jam in his first inning,” said Ayrault. “He put up a scoreless inning in the 11th and set the stage for (Stephen) Peterson.

 

Peterson (1-0) was greeted by a Lugo single to start the 12th inning. Lugo moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Mitch Nay, bringing Matt Dean to the plate. Dean smoked a pitch to shortstop, where Ortega made a phenomenal play, diving to save what most certainly would have been an RBI double.

 

Ortega had the presence of mind to make the play and then throw to Brandon Macias at second to double up the runner at second.

 

“A heck of a play by Ortega,” said Ayrault. “Game saving play for me. Getting that line drive and doubling the runner off, was huge.”

 

Ortega led off the bottom of the 12th, which usually happens when a player makes a big play in the field. He drew a walk to open things up, but was erased when Garcia hit into a fielder’s choice. McFarland followed and kept things going with a single, putting runners at first and second. That set the stage for Brennan, who laced one to center field, scoring Garcia with the winning run.

 

“Before the game he was getting sick, had the stomach bug, so he really battled through that ballgame,” said Ayrault of Brennan. “That for me was the story of the game. For him to really show some toughness… wanted to stay in the ballgame, battled through his illness and got the game-winning knock. Just shows what kind of character that guy’s got.”

 

“I think I just ate something that was pretty bad for my stomach,” said Brennan after the game. “It was a pretty rough start to the game, but I just kept the mental side strong.”

 

He had to keep that mental side strong at the plate as well, when he came up with the walk-off game winning hit. “I was trying to see something up and he was throwing a lot of off-speed, pitching backwards with a lot of curve ball first pitches” said Brennan. “He got me to two strikes so I had to shorten up and try to put the ball in play.”

 

The Manatees are now 5-5 and will be right back at it Monday night against the Lakeland Flying Tigers, who make their first trip of the season to Space Coast Stadium. The Tigers (3-8), won 7-5 Sunday, over Clearwater.

 

Manatees lefty Wei-Chung Wang (1-1, 9.82 ERA) will try to rebound from a rough start last Wednesday in the Jackie Robinson Celebration game, a 9-3 loss against St. Lucie. He will be opposed by right-hander Jonathan Maciel (0-1, 7.20 ERA. Game time is 6:35 PM (5:35 Central).

Rattlers hang on to win game one in Peoria

PEORIA, IL - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers edged the Peoria Chiefs 4-2 in game one of a doubleheader Monday afternoon at Dozer Park. Dustin DeMuth drove in a pair of runs and Josh Uhen got the last two outs for his first professional save.

 

Wisconsin starting pitcher Victor Diaz struggled in the first inning. He walked the leadoff batter and hit the next to put Peoria runners at first and second with no outs. A pickoff and a flyout left the Chiefs with a runner at first with two outs. Then, Diaz hit a batter and walked another to load the bases. Collin Radack singled to left to drive in a run and the Chiefs (7-4) were up 1-0.

 

A strong throw by left fielder Brandon Diaz cut down the runner trying to score from second or it could have been 2-0 in favor of Peoria.

 

Peoria starter Matt Pearce retired the first eight Rattlers he faced with five strikeouts. Then, Jake Gatewood reached on a two out error in the third. Pearce walked the next two batters - Gregory Munoz and Diaz - to load the bases.

 

DeMuth pulled a single into right to score two runs. The throw to the plate got away and Diaz noticed no one covering the plate so he raced home with another run for a 3-1 lead.

 

Victor Diaz settled in after the first inning as he retired the side in order in the second and the first two batters in the third. But, a double and a walk brought Justin Ringo to the plate and he lined a pitch that appeared headed for the left field wall and extra bases. But, Brandon Diaz made a terrific catch to end the inning.

 

The Chiefs got a run in the bottom of the fifth as the Rattlers (3-8) committed a pair of errors. Diaz walked a batter with a runner at second with one out and turned the game over to Tyler Linehan. The left-handed reliever got Ringo to ground into an inning-ending 4-6-3 double play to preserve the lead.

 

Wisconsin added to their lead in the top of the sixth inning on an RBI single by Sthervin Matos.

 

Orlando Torrez took over for Linehan to start the bottom of the sixth inning. The right-hander walked a pair in the frame, but also struck out two to keep Wisconsin up by two runs.

 

The Timber Rattlers had runners at second and third with no outs and the bases loaded with two outs in the top of the seventh but could not add on to their lead.

 

Torrez got the first out in the bottom of the seventh, but allowed a single and a walk to bring the winning run to the plate. Then, Uhen was called on to close out the game.

 

Uhen struck out Ringo for the second out, but walked another batter to load the bases. Uhen ended the game by striking out Steve Bean.

Rattlers drop game two 3-2 at Peoria

PEORIA, IL - The Peoria Chiefs scored an unearned run in the bottom of the fifth inning to break a 2-2 tie with the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers at Dozer Park. That run was enough as the Chiefs beat Wisconsin 3-2 in game two of a doubleheader. The teams split the twinbill with Wisconsin winning game one 4-2.

 

The Timber Rattlers (3-9) grabbed a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Wisconsin got RBI doubles from Brandon Diaz and David Denson to take the early advantage.

 

The Chiefs (8-4) responded in the bottom of the first inning with a two-out rally. Rattlers starting pitcher Cy Sneed retired the first two batters of the inning, but gave up a single to Danny Diekroeger, who promptly stole second. A single by Nick Thompson drove in Diekroeger. Sneed walked the next batter. Then, Luis Cruz dropped in a bloop single down the right field line to score Thompson with the run to tie the game 2-2.

 

Andrew Sohn started the inning with a single and stole second base with one out. He went to third on a slow roller to short that was the second out of the inning. Diekroeger's grounder to short was misplayed and Sohn scored the go-ahead run.

 

The final Timber Rattlers out of the first inning was a caught stealing. Peoria starting pitcher Will Anderson came out in the second inning with the game tied and started a streak of retiring the next 15 Timber Rattlers in order. He turned the ball over to the Peoria bullpen to start the seventh.

 

Robby Rowland would retire the first two batters of the seventh before Sthervin Matos singled to bring the go-ahead run to the plate. Greg McCall kept the inning alive with a blooper to right-center that dropped for a single and sent Matos around to third base. But, Rowland squelched the Rattler rally with a game-ending strikeout to earn the split in the doubleheader.

 

The Timber Rattlers return home to begin a six-game homestand on Tuesday night against the Cedar Rapids Kernels. Zach Hirsch (0-1, 3.00) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. The Kernels have not announced their starter. Game time is 6:35pm.

JACKSONVILLE, FL - Biloxi's first game as a home team will have to wait. Monday's series opener between the Shuckers and Jacksonville Suns (MIA) at Bragan Field has been postponed by rain and wet grounds. The game will be made up as part of a doubleheader on Tuesday, involving two seven-inning contests. Game one will begin at 4:35 PM CST, with game two beginning 30 minutes following the conclusion of game one.

 

Monday was originally going to be Biloxi's first scheduled "home" game of the season, but for the third time in 11 days, rain has put a halt to game day. Tuesday will be the second doubleheader of the season in just under two weeks of play. The Shuckers are 4-0 in nine-inning games this season, while 1-4 in games played less than the expected nine.

 

In game one RHP Brooks Hall (1-0, 1.80) will take the hill for the Shuckers against RHP Trevor Williams (0-0, 0.75 ERA) for Jacksonville. RHP Jacob Barnes (0-1, 1.93) will start the nightcap for Biloxi and be opposed by Jacksonville LHP Chipper Smith (1-0, 0.00).

 

With the doubleheader on Tuesday, the Suns and Shuckers will play three games in the span of 24-hours, with Wednesday's game scheduled for a 12:05 PM CST start.

 

The Shuckers (5-4) are four games into a 21-day stretch of games, including a twin bill with the Pensacola Blue Wahoos on Sunday, April 26. Biloxi currently holds second place in the Southern League South division standings, a half games back of the Mobile BayBears. As of Monday, the Shuckers have the second-best ERA in the Southern League (2.45) behind only Jacksonville (2.33) and has allowed the least amount of runs (21).

Starters Struggle Leaving Bullpens to Battle

All but one in the Sky Sox starting lineup collected a base hit on Monday night, with five collecting multi-hit games, in the Sox 11-5 loss to the Nashville Sounds in front of 4,216 fans at First Tennessee Park.

 

Both teams' starting pitchers would be out of the ballgame by the fifth inning in one that turned into a battle of the bullpens rather quickly.

 

While Sounds starter Barry Zito struggled from the onset, allowing four base hits to his first six batters faced, Sox starter Taylor Jungmann cruised through his first four frames with relative ease.

 

In fact, Zito had been mostly avoiding trouble, allowing just one run in the second until the base-hit floodgates opened with two outs in the top half of the fourth. The Sky Sox would plate four runs in the inning, started by a Donnie Murphy walk followed by consecutive base hits of the bats of Matt Long, Luis Sardinas, Elian Herrera, Matt Clark and Shane Peterson.

 

The Sox seemed to be off and running as Jungmann would carve his way through the Sounds lineup, stumbling slightly in the home fourth with leadoff hitter Billy Burns using his speed to manufacture a run after an inning-opening single. Burns' base hit was the first of the game for Nashville.

 

Similar to Zito, things would get away from Jungmann in with two out in his final inning of work. Jungmann would set the first two batters down quickly in the bottom of the fifth before allowing three runs to score on three singles, a double and a walk by his next five batters. Jungmann would be replaced by David Goforth (0-2, 9.45) whose wild pitch with two out in the frame allowed Jungmann's final run to score. The 2011 first-rounder would finish with five runs allowed on five hits and two walks while striking out four over 4.2 innings of work.

 

Goforth would lead the Sox through a scoreless sixth with the score tied 5-5 heading into the seventh. The Sox would go down in order against new pitcher Brock Huntzinger (1-0. 1.35) before the Sounds broke through in their half of the inning for what would be the game's winning runs.

 

With Goforth still on the mound, the Sounds lineup would collect back-to-back singles before a sac bunt and walk to Billy Burns loaded the bases with one out. A wild pitch to the very next batter allowed the go-ahead run to score, bringing reliable left-hander Brent Leach on in relief of Goforth in an undesirable one out, runners on first and third situation. Leach would not be able to limit the damage this time around as a hit by pitch, single and fielding error would allow two more runs to score and knock the reliever out of the game.

 

Right-hander Rob Wooten would take the mound still with just one out in hopes of keeping the score at 8-5. Right-fielder Kent Matthes did not comply, lining a bases-clearing three-run double to left-center field. Wooten would set the next two batters down in order to end the seventh, leaving Nashville with six runs scored on four hits and an error.

 

Right-hander Chad Smith would come in the top of the eighth to shut down the Sky Sox lineup and, while allowing four hits to Sox hitters over the next two innings, would do just that. The Sky Sox lineup would pound out 14 hits against Sounds pitching but could not overcome a difficult seventh inning in their 11-5 loss.

 

After concluding their four-game series in Nashville, the Sky Sox will head into Round Rock for four games against the Express to finish off their eight game road trip. Right-hander Chris Leroux (0-1, 6.35) will take the hill for the Sox as the team looks to get back on track.

Hotels no respite for these road warriors

When it was announced an hour before Monday’s scheduled game between the Jacksonville Suns and the Biloxi Shuckers that the game had been postponed, it meant the Shuckers would return to their hotel earlier than expected. That’s not necessarily a good thing.

 

Biloxi became the newest member of the Southern League this year when the Huntsville Stars franchise was relocated to the southern Mississippi city. But the Shuckers got a late start in building a new ball park and coupled with some weather delays, the new park is not scheduled to be ready for play until June 6.

 

As a result, the Shuckers will play their first 10 series away from home, including three series at their old ball park in Huntsville. Included in those 10 series is the current one in Jacksonville that was supposed to have been played in Biloxi. As a result, the Shuckers will wear home uniforms, the Suns will bat first and Biloxi will be considered the home team.

 

Such a schedule will leave the Shuckers with a lot of bus trips and continuous nights in different hotels.

 

“We all like each other right now, but come game 50 on the road and we haven’t seen anybody but each other, it’s going to get a little sticky,” said Shuckers infielder Nick Shaw. “The biggest thing is not having any privacy. You room with one other guy and the beds are right there next to each other. With our days off this first half, it’s like 60 straight games of sleeping in a hotel next to another guy — Eww!”

Biloxi pitching coach Chris Hook said the team is already thinking of ways to help break up the long road routine.

 

“What we’ll probably do later as an organization is to do some things together away from baseball, maybe go to a movie, just to break up that road schedule,” Hook said. “The challenges will be tough as we get deeper into this.”
