Early homers lead Dunedin to victory

The Dunedin Blue Jays evened their series with the Brevard County Manatees on Saturday night, taking the middle game of the three-game series 4-2, in front of 1,851 fans at Space Coast Stadium.

 

Dunedin’s Matt Dean led off the second inning with a triple that ‘Tees right fielder Clint Coulter almost came up with. He got to the ball, but couldn’t squeeze it once he got to the wall. Manatees’ pitcher Jorge Ortega retired the next two hitters, before Christian Lopes singled to center field, giving the visitors a 1-0 lead.

 

The Blue Jays (5-5) would get to Ortega again in the third inning, this time with the long ball. Roemon Fields singled to lead off the inning and Dawel Lugo followed with a long blast to left field berm deck, making it a 3-0 ball game.

 

Coulter, who hit one home run and just missed another in Friday’s 4-0 win by the Manatees, was back at it Saturday. After working a walk in his first at-bat, he came up in the third inning and sent one over the left-center field wall, making it a 3-1 contest.

 

“He’s had some quality at-bats the last couple nights,” said Manatees manager Joe Ayrault. “Ended up with three hits on the night, so a big night for him. He keeps swinging it, doing a heck of a job.”

 

Emilio Guerrero got that run back in the fourth inning for Dunedin, when he took Ortega deep to start the frame, giving the visitors a 4-1 lead. Ortega settled down after that, retiring the next 15 batters he faced and getting through eight innings. He allowed four runs on six hits, struck out three and did not walk a batter.

 

“It was just a couple questionable pitches in there. He just made a couple mistakes with his pitch selection tonight,” said Ayrault of Ortega’s outing. “He made the adjustment and locked it in for the rest of the ball game, but take those out of there and it was a good start for him.”

 

The Manatees (4-5) would score their final run of the night in the seventh inning. Johnny Davis would single with one out, beating out a close play at first. He went down after getting to the first base bag, as looked to have hurt his knee. He did get back to his feet with help from the training staff, but he was removed from the game. Omar Garcia was called on to pinch-run for Davis.

 

Garcia wasted no time making an impact, as he stole second base. Chris McFarland struck out, but Coulter followed and came through with a line drive single to left. Garcia raced home, cutting the Dunedin lead in half, 4-2.

 

The Manatees mounted a big threat in the eighth inning when Garrett Cooper and Brandon Macias hit back-to-back singles with one out. Ninth place hitter Angel Ortega was up next and hit the ball hard but right at Lugo at short, for the tailor made double play.

 

Coulter got his final hit of the night with two outs in the ninth inning, against Dunedin pitcher Wil Browning. Taylor Brennan was the last hope for Brevard County, but he went down on strikes to end the game.

 

Johnny Davis injury update from Ayrault: “He should be okay. It was his kneecap, slightly subluxed possibly. “If he comes in tomorrow (Sunday) and it’s swollen, we’ll have to get it checked out, but hopefully he gets through the night.”

 

Ayrault also said that Davis went through all the tests and everything looked good, so that is a positive sign.

Rattlers rained out in Peoria on Sunday

Will play doubleheader Monday starting at noon

PEORIA, IL - Sunday's game between the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers and Peoria Chiefs at Dozer Park has been rained out. The teams have rescheduled Sunday's postponement to be part of a doubleheader on Monday afternoon.

 

Monday's twinbill will be a pair of seven inning games. Game one will start at noon. There will be a thirty minute break between the end of game one and the start of game two.

 

The broadcast of both games on Monday may be heard on AM1280, WNAM starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 11:40am. The doubleheader can also be heard on TuneIn Radio.

Jays Drop Heart Breaker 3-2 in 12

Viera, FL - Taylor Brennan delivered a walk-off single in the bottom of the 12th inning to lift the Brevard County Manatees over the Dunedin Blue Jays 3-2 in the rubber game of the series. The game, including a two-hour and seven minute rain delay, was five hours and thirty minutes.

 

Leading 2-0 into the bottom of the seventh, the umpires called for the tarp, which took at least five minutes to be fully pulled onto the infield. The rain didn't last long, but the teams had to wait for the field conditions to improve enough to be safe to play on.

 

The Manatees rallied right away following the delay against D-Jays reliever Brady Dragmire, loading the bases with nobody out on two singles and a fielder's choice. Omar Garcia drew a walk to make it 2-1 before Dragmire induced a 1-2-3 double play. A second run scored, however, on a passed ball by catcher Mike Reeves with two out and the game was tied 2-2.

 

It remained tied until the bottom of the 12th, when Brennan delivered the game-winner with runners on first and second and one out. The Blue Jays best chance in extra innings came in the 10th, when Mitch Nay led off with a double and Matt Dean advanced him to third with a ground out. Unfortunately for the Jays, the next two batters could not bring Nay in. Dunedin was 1-for-14 with runners in scoring position and stranded 12 runners on base.

 

Brevard County starter Hiram Burgos walked the bases loaded with one out in the first, but the Blue Jays could not make him pay. They finally got to Burgos in the fifth when Dawel Lugo delivered an RBI single and another run scored on an error. The run batted in for Lugo was his team-leading sixth of the young season.

 

Mike Reeves, who came into the game 1-for-12 on the season, had two hard singles up the middle and scored the first run for the D-Jays. He started the rally for Dunedin in the fifth with the second of his two hits.

 

Murphy Smith, in his second appearance and first start, tossed three shutout innings and struck out three while allowing just one hit. Matt Dermody followed with three shutout frames of his own, fanning four in the process. Jimmy Cordero threw a pair of shutout innings and struck out two. Scott Silverstein took the loss despite retiring six of the first seven hitters he faced and pitching 2.1 innings, his longest outing yet this season.

 

Dunedin opens a three-game series in Daytona tomorrow night against the Tortugas at Jackie Robinson Ballpark. Right-hander Brad Allen will start for the Blue Jays. First pitch is 7:05 p.m. and the action can be heard on dunedinbluejays.com.

Comments:

Hiram Burgos struggled a bit with control and the ball/strike calls. Dave Chavarria, the pitching coach, was tossed out in the 1st after Burgos walked 3 batters in a row and Chris McFarland was called out to start the inning.

 

After a blistering start, Chris McFarland is in a bit of a slump now. 1-6 today.

Viera, Fla. - The Brevard County Manatees (5-5) weathered storms from the skies and on the field Sunday night to get their first series win of the season as Taylor Brennan's single in the bottom of the 12th inning gave the Manatees a 3-2 victory over the Dunedin Blue Jays (5-6).

 

The Manatees were up against it from the start as Hiram Burgos walked the bases loaded in the top of the first inning thanks to a tight strike zone. He would escape damage, however, as he struck out Matt Dean and got Emilio Guerrero to pop out.

 

Neither team would be able to advance a runner past second base until the fifth inning when Dunedin finally broke through. The inning started with a Mike Reeves single to center. Following a strikeout of Major League rehabber Michael Saunders, Roemon Fields singled to right and would advance to second on Clint Coulter's throw to 3rd. Dawel Lugo then singled to right to score Reeves and when Coulter overran the ball, Fields would come around as well. With Lugo sitting on second, Burgos struck out Mitch Nay and Dean to end his outing. In his five innings, Burgos gave up one earned run on four hits, walked four and struck out eight for a second consecutive start.

 

As Clint Terry took to the mound in the top of the seventh inning for the 'Tees, a line of thunderstorms descended on Space Coast Stadium and it became obvious play would be stopped soon. Fields reached on a bunt single, and following a Lugo flyout to right, he stole second. Terry would bring the frame to an end when he got Nay to pop out to second. As soon as the ball landed in Brandon Macias' glove, the heavens opened up, the tarp was brought out and so began a rain delay that would total two hours and three minutes in length.

 

As it turns out, the break was just what the Brevard County offense needed. When play resumed, the Manatee half of the seventh started with singles by Garrett Cooper and Rafael Neda. Angel Ortega then got a bunt down and when reliever Brady Dragmire's throw to third was low, the bases were loaded. The 'Tees finally got on the board when Omar Garcia drew a walk. Chris McFarland then tapped back to the mound to start a 1-2-3 double play. The Manatees would get a bit of luck when a Dragmire pitch went through Reeves' legs behind the plate, allowing Ortega to come home and tie the game at two. The inning ended shortly after with Brennan flying out to second.

 

The momentum would continue into the start of the bottom of the eighth inning as Coulter just missed hitting a home run for a third straight game. His drive went off of the top of the right field wall and Coulter ended up with a triple. Dunedin reliever Jimmy Cordero would bail his team out, as he would strike out Victor Roache and Cooper with fastballs in the high 90s and induce a popout from Macias to keep the game tied.

 

Dunedin would have the first of several opportunities to take the late lead in the ninth inning with something of a two-out rally against reliever Preston Gainey. New left fielder Ian Parmley and Fields would draw walks but Gainey struck out Lugo to end the threat.

 

Ortega would reach with one out in the bottom of the ninth on an error by second baseman Christian Lopes. However, he would be doubled off when Garcia hit a ball to shallow center. Fields would run it down and with Ortega having to go halfway between first and second, he had an easy throw back to first for the double play.

 

The D-Jays would threaten again in the 10th thanks to a leadoff double to left by Nay off of reliever Casey Medlen. Nay would move to third on a groundout to Macias by Dean. Guerrero then hit a dribbler up the first base line that Medlen fielded, looked Nay back to third and then recorded the out at first. The inning came to a close when Derek Loveless grounded out to second.

 

After the Manatees went down in order in the bottom of the 10th, Dunedin would get a two-out single from Parmley in the top of the 11th but that would go by the wayside when Fields grounded out to third.

 

It appeared Brevard County that had victory in sight when Roache doubled down the left field line to open the home half of the 11th, but a pair of terrific defensive plays by Fields in centerfield would stifle them. Against both Macias and Cooper, Fields ran down a ball in the gap, stopped immediately and then unleashed a throw to the infield to prevent Roache from tagging up. When Neda flew out to left, 11 innings had gone with the game still tied.

 

The Blue Jays last chance started with a leadoff single to center by Lugo off of new reliever Stephen Peterson (1-0, 1.93 ERA). Nay would lay down a sacrifice bunt to advance Lugo but that would be followed by the defensive play of the game. Matt Dean hit a rope towards left but Ortega made an outstanding diving catch to his right. Seeing that Lugo was just far enough off of second, he immediately whipped a throw to a covering Macias to end the inning.

 

The Manatees seized the moment in the bottom of the 12th against Scott Silverstein (0-1, 3.86), who was starting his third inning of relief. Ortega began the inning with a walk and then was erased on a fielders' choice, allowing Garcia to reach first. McFarland then singled on a ball that died on the infield grass, moving the winning run into scoring position. That brought the responsibility to the bat of Brennan, who had not had a hit in his last 13 at-bats. He'd rip a ball into center and when the throw home by Fields was slightly up the line, Brevard County had finally secured the win five and a half hours after first pitch.

 

The unsung hero of the night was the 'Tees bullpen; between Terry, Gainey, Medlen and Peterson, the pen threw seven shutout innings, gave up five hits, walked two and struck out six.

 

The Manatees will be back at the yard on Monday to begin a three-game series with the Lakeland Flying Tigers. LHP Wei-Chung Wang (1-1, 9.82) will take be on the hill, looking to atone for a rough outing in his last start last Wednesday against the St. Lucie Mets in Vero Beach. Righthander Jonathan Maciel (0-1, 7.20 ERA) will get the start for Lakeland.

Sounds Cling to Two-Run First, Down Sox

5,787 fans were on hand to witness the rain play a role once again in Sunday's 2-1 Sounds win over the Sky Sox at First Tennessee Park.

 

After the Sky Sox were set down in order in the top of the first inning by Sounds spot-starter Fernando Rodriguez, Nashville's offense got going early in the home half, scoring two quick runs off of Sox right-hander Tyler Cravy.

 

Cravy (1-1, 3.60) would walk two in the first and allow those free passes to travel home on the strength of a two-out, two-run double by Sounds right fielder Kent Matthes. In all, Cravy would toss four innings, allowing just the two runs on four walks and two hits while striking out five before an hour long rain delay forced him out of the ballgame for the start of the fifth.

 

Cravy would get a run of support during his shortened time on the mound. With Rodriguez still on the mound for Nashville in the top of the third, Pete Orr would lay down a successful bunt single down the third base line. Orr would steal second before Rodriguez induced a lazy pop up by Matt Long to second baseman Joey Wendle. With one out in the inning, the Sounds would turn to the game's scheduled starter Chris Bassitt (1-0, 3.38) in hopes of working out of the jam. Bassitt would get Luis Sardinas to ground out to short before Elian Herrera came through with an RBI single up the middle to plate Orr and cut the deficit to one.

 

The skies opened after the fourth inning, delaying the game for an hour before play resumed in the top of the fifth. Bassitt remained in the game for Nashville and was able to work a 1-2-3 inning against the Sox offense after the delay. Saturday night's game was also slowed by rain as the game was pushed back for an hour and a half before first pitch could be thrown.

 

Having thrown 86 pitches (50 for strikes) and sitting for an extended period of time, manager Rick Sweet thought it would be best to give Cravy the rest of the night off before turning to lefty reliever Jed Bradley for the Sounds' fifth.

 

Bradley would not disappoint, turning in his most effective performance of 2015 with three innings of shutout baseball. The 2011 first rounder out of Huntsville, Alabama allowed two hits while walking two and striking out three, keeping Nashville off the scoreboard and Colorado Springs in the ballgame.

 

Unfortunately the Sounds bullpen turned in an equally strong performance. Bassitt would go 4.2 scoreless innings before turning the ball over to 1-2 punch of left-hander Eury De La Rosa in the eighth and former A's closer Ryan Cook in the ninth. The Sounds bullpen would combine to pitch 6.2 innings of shutout baseball while allowing just four base runners.

 

The Sky Sox would wind up out-hitting the Sounds 5-4, but the two-run first inning would ultimately be enough for Nashville on this day as they helped Bassitt earn his first career Triple-A win.

 

The Sky Sox bullpen has been stellar in this series, posting a miniscule 0.75 ERA (1 ER/12 IP) over the last three games while striking out 14 Sounds batters.

 

The Sky Sox will look to build on their recent string of strong pitching performances in the series finale against the Sounds on Monday. Left-hander Barry Zito (0-0, 6.10) is set to duel with the Sox' Taylor Jungmann (0-1, 7.88) with first pitch slated for 6:05 PM MDT (7:05 Central).

MOBILE, ALA. - After Saturday's game was suspended due to rain, the Biloxi Shuckers and the Mobile BayBears picked up where they left off in the top of the fifth on Sunday. The Shuckers went on to take the resumed matchup, 6-2. Sunday's regularly scheduled game had a different outcome, with the Shuckers' offense being shut down by Gabriel Arias in a 4-0 defeat, in the rubber match. Despite the two straight wins, Biloxi dropped their first ever series as Mobile took 3 of 5 in the set. Yadiel Rivera was 3-for-7 in the two games and extended his hitting streak to seven games - one off the league best this season. Orlando Arcia was 3-for-8 in the games and has reached base safely in all nine games this season.

 

Saturday's Suspended Game: Shuckers 6, BayBears 2

 

The Shuckers poured it on early against Brandon Sinnery (L, 0-1), putting up two runs in the first and tacking on another in the third.

 

Arcia (2x5, 2 R) reached base safely on an error by shortstop Raul Navarro with one out. Nathan Orf (0x4, R) walked to set up Taylor Green's (1x5, RBI) RBI single to bring home Arcia and give the Shuckers a 1-0 lead, with Orf advancing to third on the play.

 

Michael Reed (2x2, RBI, R) hit a sacrifice fly to deep center that brought home Orf to stretch the lead to two.

 

Biloxi (5-4) added on another run in the second to give starting pitcher Hobbs Johnson an early cushion.

 

Tyrone Taylor (3x4, 2 2B, R) doubled to lead off the frame and came around to score on a single by Adam Weisenburger (1x3, RBI) for the 3-0 advantage.

 

Rivera's (1x4, HR, 3 RBI, R) three-run homer in the eighth gave the Shuckers a comfortable lead at 6-0.

 

Johnson started the game and allowed a leadoff single to Raul Navarro, but quickly erased him on a double play to Brandon Drury. Todd Glaesmann and Socrates Brito hit back-to-back singles before Mitch Haniger flew out to end the inning.

 

That would be the only blip on Johnson's line, as the lefty would retire the side in order in the second, third and fourth innings before the rains came and shut down his start.

 

Mike Strong (W, 1-0) came on to begin the continuation of the game on Sunday and allowed just one baserunner over three innings while gathering three strikeouts.

 

Jaye Chapman (IP, SO) and Damien Magnifico (IP, 2 R, 2 H, BB, SO) worked the final two frames for the Shuckers. The win evened the series at 2-2.

The rubber match featured a seven-inning contest between the two teams with Jorge Lopez (0-2) taking the mound for the Shuckers.

 

The Milwaukee Brewers lone representative in the 2015 MLB Futures Game struggled early on, allowing a run in the first off of two hits, a walk and a wild pitch. During his four innings, the 22-year-old allowed three runs on seven hits while walking two and striking out two.

 

Mobile (6-4) would pad onto its lead in the third when Alex Glenn doubled in Rudy Flores and Haniger to put Biloxi in a 3-0 hole.

 

The BayBears would tack on another run in the sixth off of reliever Martin Viramontes (2 IP, 3 H, R).

 

Rivera (2x3) would provide Biloxi's only multi-hit game and his single in the fourth inning extended his hitting streak to seven games. Arcia's (1x3) single in the first pushed his on-base streak to nine games.

 

The Shuckers will now head east down I-10 to take on the Jacksonville Suns for game one of a five-game set at Bragan Field, but will serve as the home team. LHP Brent Suter (1-0, 0.00) will make his first start of the year for the Shuckers against RHP Trevor Williams (0-0, 0.75). First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 PM, with coverage beginning at 5:50 on 1240-AM WGCM and the Biloxi Shuckers Radio Network. Note that all of Orlando Arcia's defensive work has been at shortstop, while all but a few innings of Yadiel Rivera's has been at second base. Rivera's line is just ridiculous through eight games: 11-for-26 with five XBH's, three walks and only four K's - .423/.483/.731 (1.214 OPS).

 

Arcia's at .393/.485/.536 (1.021 OPS) -- what a fantastic pairing, and Rivera looks primed for a breakout season - Yadiel turns 23 in two weeks.

 

When you combine that with their excellent defensive skills, we can plan on reading multiple features on this dynamic middle infield duo all season long.

I noticed this last night. Hard to believe he's still just 22, seems like he's been around forever. Also surprising he hasn't been seeing a lot more time at third base, given the Brewers' glaring hole there in the upper minors. No offense to Jason Rogers, Nate Orf, Taylor Green, or Luis Jimenez.

I was able to attend the first 3 games in Nashville. Couple of comments...Stadium is great...Brewers affiliate missed out on an opportunity to play there. Overall pitching was better than it was in Colorado springs. Guys in scoring position and no hits...we have to be lead the league. Don't get overly excited about the number of walks by starters lately. How is it umpires are worse at the higher levels...learn your zone umps...down the middle of the plate between knees and waist is a strike. We could use some speed in the outfield, Nashville OF saved them the game in ninth yesterday by making two catches on balls that our guys wouldn't have touched. Last thing...pitch clock is annoying.
