I just wanted to say I appreciate all the threads and posts following the minor leagues. I find myself checking them much more frequently now that the MLB Brewers are, well, disappointing. Thanks for all the work you do, Mass.

I have to say that our rotations are fun to follow. At every level, there's an interesting prospect throwing each day. We could use a few more studs, but it's far better than we we had Sheets, Neugebauer, and Gold as our only prospects, with Mieses and Poe as guys we pretended were prospects. Or Derek Lee?

Lugo and Guerrero Go Deep For Jays in 4-2 Win

Viera, FL - Dawel Lugo and Emilio Guerrero each hit home runs to lead the Dunedin Blue Jays over the Brevard County Manatees 4-2 on Saturday night at Space Coast Stadium.

 

After being held scoreless for 19 straight innings, Christian Lopes changed that in the second inning with a two-out RBI single to put the Jays up 1-0. The hit scored Matt Dean, who led off the inning with a triple.

 

Lugo launched his home run the very next inning, a two-run shot measured at 397 feet and his second of the season. Guerrero later followed with a solo blast to lead off the fourth.

 

Jairo Labourt struck out eight in his four innings of work on the mound. Tiago Da Silva (1-0) earned the win with 3.2 innings in relief, retiring the first seven batters he faced while striking out four. Chad Girodo followed with an inning and a third of scoreless relief and Wil Browning shut the door in the ninth to earn his third save.

 

The rubber game of the series is tomorrow at Space Coast Stadium in Viera. Right-hander Murphy Smith will start for the Blue Jays. First pitch is 5:05 p.m. and the action can be heard on dunedinbluejays.com.

Jorge Ortega went 8 innings, retiring the final 15 hitters he faced. His nemesis is the long ball which killed him here. A triple in the 2nd and homeruns in the 3rd and 4th led to all 4 Blue Jay runs. Jorge gave up 13 HRs in 80 some innings last year. No walks here in the 8 innings.

 

Offensively, Clint Coulter is really locked in at the moment. Starter Jairo Labourt is one of the Jays top prospects and Clint hit his homerun off him. He was 3-4 with a walk and two RBIs including the homerun.

 

Manatees were 1-13 with RISP and left 11 on base.

Coulter Collects Three Hits, HR in Loss

 

Viera, Fla. – The Dunedin Blue Jays (5-5) smacked home runs in consecutive innings en route to a 4-2 victory over the Brevard County Manatees (4-5) at Space Coast Stadium on Friday night.

 

Leading 1-0 in the third inning, Dunedin’s Roemon Fields led off the frame with a bunt single. Dawel Lugo followed up with a long two-run homer to left field off of Brevard County starter Jorge Ortega (1-1, 3.21 ERA). It was Lugo’s second home run of the season and extended the Blue Jays lead to 3-0.

 

Clint Coulter would get a run right back in the bottom of the third. Coulter smacked a solo homer to left-center to put the ‘Tees on the board. For Coulter, who also homered in last night’s game, it was his third homer of the year. The right fielder finished the night with three hits, a walk and two RBI.

 

The Blue Jays responded to Coulter’s home run immediately. Emilio Guerrero led off the top of the fourth with a solo blast of his own against Ortega, and gave Dunedin a three run cushion.

 

The Manatees would battle back in the seventh inning. With one out, Johnny Davis legged out a bunt single. Davis left the game on the play. Pinch runner Omar Garcia stole second. After a strike out, Coulter delivered with an RBI single to plate Garcia. Chad Girodo was summoned from the Dunedin bullpen to replace Tiago Da Silva (1-0, 3.38). After a walk to Taylor Brennan, Girodo retired Victor Roache on a comebacker to end the threat.

 

The Manatees sent the tying run to the plate in the ninth, but Wil Browning struck out Brennan to end the ballgame with Coulter on first. Browning earned his third save of 2015.

 

Despite the two home runs allowed, Ortega pitched eight full innings. He allowed four runs on six hits and did not walk a batter.

 

Dunedin starter Jairo Labourt did not qualify for the win after he was replaced to start the fifth. Labourt surrendered one run on four hits and fanned eight in his four innings of work. Da Silva allowed a run in 2.2 innings of relief to collect his first win of the year.

 

Brandon Macias went 3-for-4 in the loss with a fourth-inning leadoff double.

 

Kaleb Earls pitched a scoreless ninth for Brevard County, despite two hits allowed.

 

The Manatees and Blue Jays will play the rubber match tomorrow at Space Coast Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 5:05 PM (4:05 Central). RHP Hiram Burgos (1-1, 2.25) will start for Brevard County. Murphy Smith (0-0, 6.75) will make his first start for the Blue Jays.

MOBILE, ALA. - After four innings of baseball on Saturday night through a steady rain, the game was finally suspended after a 48 minute delay with the Shuckers holding a 3-0 advantage over the Mobile BayBears. The game will be resumed on Sunday afternoon in the top of the fifth inning at 1:05 p.m. Sunday's regularly scheduled game will immediately follow and be a seven-inning contest.

 

The Shuckers jumped on the scoreboard in the top of the first, thanks to an RBI single from Taylor Green that scored Orlando Arcia from second. It was Green's first run batted in this season and gave the Shuckers a 1-0 lead. The next batter, Michael Reed smacked a fly ball to center that was deep enough to score Nathan Orf from third and give Biloxi a 2-0 advantage.

 

Taylor opened the second frame with a double to the gap in left-center, and would come around to score on the next batter, Adam Weisenburger's single to center. The 3-0 lead is where we stand after four innings.

 

Starter Hobbs Johnson, making his second start of 2015, surrendered three hits in the first inning, but retired the next ten batters he faced, including five strikeouts. The former North Carolina Tar Heel didn't walk a batter during the four-inning outing.

 

LHP Mike Strong will resume tonight's suspended game for the Shuckers and RHP Jimmie Sherfy will pick things up for the BayBears, RHP Jorge Lopez (0-1, 12.00) will get the ball for Biloxi, and be opposed by BayBears' RHP Gabriel Arias (1-0, 3.00). Coverage of Sunday's action will begin at 1:00 PM on 1240-AM WGCM and the Biloxi Shuckers Radio Network. After tomorrow's games, the Shuckers will bus to Jacksonville, Florida where they will begin a five-game series against the Suns (MIA) on Monday night at 6:05 PM CT. The Shuckers are also scheduled to play a doubleheader next Sunday in Pensacola, a makeup of the April 13 postponement against the Blue Wahoos.

Rattlers fall hard in Peoria with a 15-4 loss

PEORIA, IL - The Peoria Chiefs jumped out to a 12-0 lead after three innings and cruised to a 15-4 win over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers Saturday night at Dozer Park. The Chiefs collected sixteen hits on the way to the win.

 

Peoria (7-3) grabbed the early lead with two runs in the first inning. Consecutive RBI singles by Nick Thompson and Justin Ringo gave the Chiefs the early lead.

 

The Chiefs added four more runs in the second inning as they sent eight batters to the plate against Wisconsin starter Milton Gomez. Darren Seferina's two-run triple made it 4-0. Magneuris Sierra followed with another RBI triple. A single by Andrew Sohn knocked in Sierra for a 6-0 lead.

 

The lead doubled to 12-0 as Peoria sent eleven men to the plate and scored six runs off two Wisconsin pitchers in the third. Gomez allowed the first run of the inning on a wild pitch. He left with runners on first and second with one out.

 

Sierra greeted reliever Brock Hudgens with a single to load the bases. Sohn followed with a three-run double to make the score 10-0 in favor of the Chiefs. RBI singles by Thompson and Collin Radack capped the scoring in the inning.

 

Wisconsin (2-8) got their first hit of the game in the top of the fourth singled to start the inning. Elvis Rubio also singled. David Denson was next and he lined a 3-1 pitch off the wall in left. DeMuth scored easily, but Rubio was thrown out at third. Denson's RBI double was the last hit of the inning for the Rattlers.

 

Peoria tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the seventh against Luis Ortega. The Rattlers reliever issued two walks with one out and gave up a two-run double to Ringo and an RBI single to Radack for a15-1 lead.

 

The Timber Rattlers got a few runs late in the game. Gregory Munoz walked to start the eighth. Brandon Diaz followed with a double. An error on a grounder off the bat of Luis Aviles allowed Munoz to score. Diaz would score and Aviles would race from first to third on a wild pitch with Denson at the plate. Denson would knock in Aviles with a sacrifice fly to center.

 

Munoz was on base three times on Saturday night in the leadoff spot for Wisconsin. He drew two walks, singled, stole a base in the first inning, and scored a run.

 

Peoria has won the first four meetings of the 2015 season between the teams.

 

Game two of the series is scheduled for Sunday evening at Dozer Park. Wisconsin has named Victor Diaz (0-1, 3.86) as the scheduled starting pitcher. Peoria places Matt Pearce (1-0, 0.00) on the mound as their starter. Game time is 5:00pm. The radio broadcast is scheduled to start at 4:40pm on AM1280, WNAM. The broadcast is also available on TuneIN Radio.

The Sky Sox cliqued on all cylinders Saturday night en route to a 4-2 win over the Sounds before a crowd of 9,211 at First Tennessee Park in Nashville.

 

Both of the game's starting pitchers matched zeros through the first four frames before the Sky Sox were able to break through in the third inning against Sounds starter Brad Mills (0-2, 7.27). A single by Donnie Murphy and an error on an attempted force out allowing Nevin Ashley to reach first gave Colorado Springs runners on first and second with no outs. Left fielder Matt Long would line a 3-2 pitch from Mills into centerfield to score Murphy for the game's first run. With runners on the corners, and still no outs, Luis Sardinas grounded into a bases-clearing double play, allowing Ashley to score from third base. Elian Herrera would add a single before a Matt Clark groundout ended the inning with the Sox leading 2-0.

 

In his second start of 2015, Drew Gagnon (1-0, 5.23) would work through two neat innings before encountering trouble in the next two. With one out in the home third, Gagnon walked Anthony Aliotti who was then moved over to second base on a sacrifice bunt by the speedy Billy Burns. Second baseman Joey Wendle delivered a clutch two-out RBI double to right field, plating Aliotti and cutting the deficit to one. The Sounds would score again in the fourth on the strength of two walks and two singles, tying the ballgame when Kent Matthes crossed the plate on an Aliotti infield single.

 

Gagnon would set down his next five consecutive batters before being replaced by left-hander Brent Leach in the top of the sixth with one out and two on. Leach would induce an inning-ending double play off the bat of Sounds catcher Luke Carlin to seal the book on Gagnon and maintain the team's 4-2 lead. Gagnon would finish the day having given up just two runs on five hits while striking out six in 5.1 innings of work.

 

The Sox would play a little small ball to score their final two runs in the top of the fifth inning. With Mills still on the mound, Ashley would work a leadoff walk before advancing to second base on a Long single. Sardinas moved the runners over on a sac bunt, giving the Sounds one out in the inning with Sox on second and third. Herrera would score Ashley with an infield single to short, breaking the tie. Clark followed with a deep fly ball to centerfield, allowing Long to cross the plate with the Sox' fourth run. Herrera would steal second base in hopes of creating a new scoring opportunity before a Shane Peterson pop out ended the threat.

 

The Nashville bullpen would pitch well in relief of Mills with three pitchers tossing a combined four innings of scoreless ball. Brock Huntzinger, Eury De La Rosa and Kevin Whelan teamed up to strike out seven Sky Sox over those final frames while allowing just two hits along the way.

 

The Sky Sox bullpen was just as effective as Leach led the way with 2.1 innings of sparkling relief, working out of a sixth inning jam before bridging the game to right-handers Rob Wooten and Corey Knebel to seal the win.

 

Knebel struck out two in the ninth on his way to securing his second save of the season and, more importantly, the Sky Sox 4-2 win over the Sounds.

 

The Sox will look to take control of the series on Sunday afternoon as Tyler Cravy (1-0, 3.00) takes the mound against fellow right-hander Chris Bassit (0-1, 4.76) at First Tennessee Park in Nashville. First pitch is scheduled for 1:05 PM MDT (2:05 Central).
