Tonight's Timber Rattlers starter, LHP Zach Hirsch, is among the Brewers' farmhands who underwent Tommy John surgery prior to joining the organization (February 2010, University of Nebraska). We missed him in an earlier discussion on the topic.

He retweeted this in Tommy John's honor last night.

Zach Hirsch allowed two runs over six innings and struck out six for the Timber Rattlers Thursday night against the Bees. Hirsh made his second quality start of the season, but had a no decision. (Wisconsin Timber Rattlers/Ann Mollica)

GRAND CHUTE, WI - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers collected a season-high 14 hits on Thursday night against the Burlington Bees at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium. However, the Rattlers stranded a season-high 13 runners and struck out a season-high 18 times in a 6-4 loss to the Bees.

Wisconsin starting pitcher Zach Hirsch was sharp early as he retired the first ten batters he faces. However, the offense could not get him the lead.

The Timber Rattlers (1-7) had a runner at second with one out in the first and loaded the bases in both the second and third innings. But, Wisconsin could not score a run against Burlington starter Jeremy Rhoades.

The Bees (5-3) took the lead in the top of the fourth. Caleb Adams tripled with one out for the first hit off Hirsch. Andrew Daniel followed with a double to knock in Adams. Daniel was thrown out trying to steal third for the second out. Zach Houchins hit the next pitch for a solo homer and a 2-0 lead.

Dustin DeMuth started the Wisconsin fifth inning with a single off reliever Jake Jewell. David Denson was next and he lined a homer over the 16'-high wall in center to tie the game 2-2.

Elvis Rubio kept the rally going for the Rattlers as he singled and took second on an error. He went to third on a groundout, but was left standing on third as the inning ended.

Hirsch worked a 1-2-3 sixth inning and turned over the game to the bullpen.

Oshkosh native Josh Uhen entered the tie game to start the top of the seventh and gave up a double down the first base line to Houchins to start the inning. Fran Whitten blooped in a single to left and the Bees had runners at the corners. A grounder off the bat of Wade Wass was misplayed for an error. That let Houchins score and Whitten to take third base. Natanael Delgado singled to left and Whitten scored for a 4-2 lead.

Uhen got the next two outs. Then, Jake Yacinich doubled to drive in both runners and the Rattlers were down 6-2.

In the bottom of the eighth, Brandon Diaz doubled and took third on an error to start the inning against Jonah Wesley, the third Burlington pitcher of the game. Greg McCall drove in Diaz with a single. Jake Gatewood collected his third hit of the game with a single to right that brought the tying run to the plate. It also brought Eduardo Paredes out of the Burlington bullpen.

Paredes got the first two outs with a strikeout. DeMuth kept hope alive with a single to left to score McCall and the Rattlers were within two. But, Paredes struck out Denson to end the inning.

In the bottom of the ninth, Rubio, who had three hits in the game, was hit by a pitch. Paredes proceeded to strike out the next three batters to end the game.

The final thirteen outs recorded by Burlington pitching in the game were via the strikeout.

The final game of Wisconsin's homestand is Friday night against the Bees. David Burkhalter (0-1) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers with Kodi Medeiros (0-0), the #1 pick of the Brewers in the 2014 draft, scheduled to pitch in relief. Burlington will counter with Keynan Middleton (0-0). Game time is 6:35pm.

The first 500 fans to attend this game will receive a sharp looking Timber Rattlers scarf courtesy of Goodwill. Friday is also the first North Shore Bank Family Night of the season with lots of fun for the whole family. Children 14 and under may participate in Kids Run the Bases thanks to Molina Healthcare after the game.

Wisconsin Boxscore

I'll start out by talking about David Denson, and after having watched his last 4 games in a row it looks to me like he's way too caught up in the guessing game instead of simply just looking for his pitch. He has some very good at ABs, then he has ABs where takes the first strike, swings at garbage out of the zone on the next pitch for strike 2, then ultimately ends up a taking a strike 3 to end the AB. The tools are there, he's just not unleashing his talent at the plate to this point, regardless of the HR he hit tonight, he had 1 good AB, and 4 pretty awful ones where he struck out.

The best thing about young players, and baseball in general is what a difference 4 days can make. Jake Gatewood was having trouble just starting his swing on Monday, and a couple of days later he's raking. Over the last 3 games Jake is (6-11, HR, 2B) and I've actually been pleasantly surprised by his defense. He'll make a fine player on the left side of the if he keeps hitting.

Zach Hirsch is your prototypical crafty lefty type... moves the ball around the zone, good off-speed, good pitchability.

Elvis Rubio (3-4 tonight) is quietly having a fine start to the season as well, 3 of his 9 hits have been for extra bases (all doubles).

Mets offense rolls in 14-6 win over Manatees

St. Lucie improves to 4-0 in home games

St. Lucie Mets

04/16/2015 11:11 PM ET

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (April 16, 2015) - The St. Lucie Mets scored a season high in run and matched their season high in hits with a 14-6 thrashing of the Brevard County Manatees on Thursday at Tradition Field.

The Mets bashed out 18 hits, the same amount as in their Opening Day win over Bradenton last Thursday. Every Met had a hit and seven of the nine in the lineup had multi-hit games.

Leading the way was 2013 first round pick Dominic Smith, who came into the game 3 for 27 on the year. Smith went 3 for 5 with three RBIs and a run scored. His two-run opposite field hit with two outs in the first put the Mets on the board.

The Mets ended up scoring five runs in the first inning. Jhoan Urena smacked a two-run double and Colton Plaia extended his hitting streak to five games with an RBI single. Plaia had three hits.

St. Lucie led 7-3 in the middle of the sixth when the rains came and delayed the game for 59 minutes. When play resumed, the Mets knocked around Scott Lieser. Four runs scored on six hits in the sixth and three more scored on three hits in the seventh. Michael Conforto belted a two-run double and Smith and Champ Stuart had RBI hits.

Conforto just missed his second grand slam in as many games when he hit a sac fly with the bases loaded to the warning track in the seventh. He ended up with three RBIs.

Stuart scored four runs. He reached base safely four times after reaching base safely five times on Wednesday.

Jake Kuebler got the win. He threw 2.1 innings of no-hit ball in relief of starter Kevin McGowan. McGowan gave up three runs - two earned - in 3.2 innings.

New York Mets relievers Vic Black and Bobby Parnell pitched the eighth and ninth, respectively. The duo pitched the first and second innings in Tuesday's game.

Black pitched around a leadoff error in the eighth and retired the next three batters in order.

Parnell gave up two runs with two outs in the ninth on a triple and a double.

After a rough first inning, Woodruff recovered to get through four innings after Wei-Chung Wang lasted just 1.1 innings for Brevard County on Wednesday. Woodruff gave up seven earned runs and seven hits.

In the first two games of their series against the Manatees, the Mets score one run on five hits. In the final two games the Mets scored 23 runs on 30 hits.

The Mets (5-3) hit the road again on Friday to begin a three-game series at the Fort Myers Miracle.

Friday's game begins at 7:05 p.m. and can be heard locally on WPSL 1590 AM with the Voice of the Mets, Adam MacDonald. The broadcast is also available on www.stluciemets.com.

MOBILE, ALA. - After three days off, including rain outs on Monday and Wednesday, the Biloxi Shuckers struggled to get the offense going on Thursday night, stranding 18 runners on base during a double header sweep at the hands of the Mobile Bay Bears. The Shuckers dropped game one, 4-3 and fell in the nightcap, 2-0, at Hank Aaron Stadium. Thursday's starters, Brooks Hall and Jacob Barnes combined to allow just three runs on six hits over 9.2 innings. The Shuckers went 2-for-15 with runners in scoring position in the two games, while stranding 18 runners on base.

Biloxi (3-3) took an early lead in game one when Nick Ramirez brought in Kyle Wren from third to give the Shuckers an early 1-0 lead.

Ramirez was at it again in the fourth when he led off the frame with a solo blast, his second of the year putting Biloxi up 2-1. The 25-year-old first baseman was 3-for-4 in the first contest, with the pair of RBI's.

The lead was short lived, as Mobile answered again in the bottom half of the inning when Socrates Brito started things with a triple and came in to score on a sacrifice fly by Brandon Drury.

The Shuckers took the lead back, 3-2 in the fifth on a Nathan Orf RBI single that plated Wren.

Starter Brooks Hall came one inning shy of picking up a quality start, but whirled a gem in his five innings of work. The right-handed starter allowed just two runs on three hits and a walk while striking out six Bay Bears.

Mobile (5-2) tied the game again in the sixth off of reliever Mike Strong, who allowed his first run in his third relief outing.

The left-handed pitcher allowed a single to Tom Belza and walked Mitch Haniger. After a fly out by Brito, Rudy Flores singled in Belza, tying the game at 3-3.

Jaye Chapman (0-1) came on to minimize the damage and did just so by popping out Drury and getting Alex Glenn to groundout.

Chapman could not keep the magic going into the ninth, as Mark Thomas sent Mobile into the clubhouse a winner with his first long ball of the season over the left-field wall. BayBears' reliever Seth Simmons (2-0) got the win, tossing a scoreless top of the seventh. Diamondbacks No. 3 overall prospect Aaron Blair took a no decision after giving up three runs on seven hits over six innings.

Detailed the late-inning pitching earlier in this thread...

The nightcap featured a pitcher's duel between Jacob Barnes (0-1) and Diamondbacks No. 2 overall prospect Braden Shipley.

In the first, Barnes allowed a hit to the second batter he faced in Brito - sandwiched between two strikeouts - and hit Flores. Parker Berberet gunned down Brito as he tried to swipe second to end the BayBears' threat.

The right-handed hurler did not allow another Mobile hitter to reach base until Montilla reached on a single to end a stretch of nine straight sat down by the starter.

Mobile would scratch across a run in the fifth, however, as Ryan Gebhardt singled home Alex Glenn from second to give the BayBears a lead they would not relinquish. Mobile made it 2-0 in the sixth, on a Rudy Flores two-out RBI single that plated Raul Navarro.

Biloxi had a chance to do damage in the sixth and seventh, when it loaded the bases off of reliever Will Locante, but would leave all three runners stranded when Berberet struck out against Enrique Burgos.

The Shuckers loaded the bases again the seventh, this time with two outs, but Burgos escaped the jam, getting Michael Reed to ground into a fielder's choice to end the game.

Shipley (1-0) picked up the win for Mobile after posting five shutout innings on five hits. Barnes surrendered one run on three hits in 4 2/3 innings and was saddled with the loss.

The two teams will meet again on Friday night, for the middle game of the series at Hank Aaron Stadium, where RHP Tyler Wagner (1-0, 0.00) will take the mound for the Shuckers against RHP Yoan Lopez (0-1, 3.00). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM, with coverage beginning at 6:50 on 1240-AM WGCM and the Biloxi Shuckers Radio Network. Fans can also listen to the game using the TuneIn Radio app or by going to www.biloxishuckers.com.

Biloxi Game Two Box Score

Neither team committed an error all night; Shuckers earned eight walks, including three by longtime OBP maven infielder Nick Shaw - combined with eight base hits, it's amazing they did not squeeze a run in seven innings; it's a big story all the way the chain to the big leagues - 0-for-6 with RISP, stranding 11.

Brooks Hall quotes...

BayBears sweep Shuckers, 4-3 and 2-0

by Patrick Magee, sunherald.com

MOBILE, Ala. - The Biloxi Shuckers received a pair of solid performances from their two starting pitchers Thursday in a doubleheader at Hank Aaron Stadium, but got nothing out of it.

The Mobile BayBears (5-2) claimed a 4-3 and 2-0 doubleheader sweep of the Shuckers (3-3) Thursday at Hank Aaron Stadium. Both games lasted seven innings with the first contest serving as a make up for Wednesday's rain out.

In the first game of the day, Mark Thompson hit a walk-off solo homer over the left field wall with none out in the bottom of the seventh to give the BayBears a 4-3 victory.

In the second game, Biloxi starting pitcher Jacob Barnes gave up one run on three hits in 4 2/3 innings, but the Shuckers stranded eight runners and lost despite out-hitting the BayBears, 6-5.

The big blast by Thompson in the first game spoiled a quality start by Shuckers right-hander Brooks Hall and a big game at the plate by Nick Ramirez.

Hall had his second consecutive five-inning outing to start the season. He gave up two earned runs on three hits, striking out six and walking one.

"I thought I threw the ball well," Hall said. "I had some tough situations, especially with (the leadoff triple to Socrates Brito in the fourth). I got the ball up on him. I wasn't really focused on that pitch. I think I executed well after that. I was happy with that."

Ramirez went 3-for-4 with his team-leading second home run of the season and two RBIs.

Biloxi reliever Jaye Chapman (0-1) got out of a jam in the sixth after entering the game with men on first and third and one out to preserve a 3-3 tie, but he was handed the loss after giving up Thompson's homer.

Biloxi led 3-2 when left-handed reliever Mike Strong replaced Hall on the mound to start the sixth. Strong gave up a single to center to Tom Belza and walked Mitch Haniger to start the inning.

With one out in the sixth, Rudy Flores singled through the right side of the infield to allow Belza to race home and get a hand under the tag of Shuckers catcher Adam Weisenburger to tie it at 3-3.

"It happens," Hall said. "Strong has been throwing the ball really well. I don't think he threw bad tonight. They just got cheap little hits. They're going to hit the ball eventually. Chapman got behind and had to use his heater. That's just baseball. They're really good pitchers and they'll bounce back."

Seth Simmons (1-0) picked up the win for Mobile in the first game by throwing a perfect seventh inning.

In the second game, Braden Shipley (1-0) threw five scoreless innings to earn the victory. He gave up five hits, struck out five and walked two.

The Shuckers and BayBears are set to resume the five-game series at 7:05 PM today at Hank Aaron Stadium.

Right-hander Tyler Wagner (1-0, 0.00) will start today for the Shuckers with right-hander Yoan Lopez (0-1, 3.00) getting the start for the BayBears.

The Manatees posted their update this AM --

Mets Cruise Over Manatees

St. Lucie Defeats Brevard County, 14-6

By Jerry Durney / Brevard County Manatees

Port St. Lucie, Fla. - The rain wasn't only thing that fell hard and fast on Thursday night as the St. Lucie Mets (5-3) used another hot start to earn a series split with the Brevard County Manatees (3-4) in a 14-6 victory at Tradition Field.

The Met deluge began in the first inning as Jeff McNeil worked a one-out walk. Michael Conforto then singled to right as the runners moved station to station. After a groundout by Maikis De La Cruz made it second and third, a Dominic Smith single to left made it 2-0. Amed Rosario singled to center, presenting an opportunity for Jhoan Urena, who promptly doubled off the left field wall and in turn, doubled the St. Lucie lead. Colton Plaia's single would cap the scoring, as the Mets would bat the order in the opening frame.

The Manatees offense would should resiliency throughout the game, as they would get two runs back in the top of the second with the benefit of some strange plays. After Cameron Garfield doubled with one out, Brandon Macias singled to right. Both Garfield and De La Cruz began a brief game of chicken as to who would go to third base first. Garfield took off and De La Cruz's throw was offline. Urena was able to pick it up and sensing that Macias had made a wide turn at first, sprinted across the diamond with the ball chasing Macias. He made an inaccurate throw to first that went wide of Smith and allowed Garfield to score and Macias to advance to second. Moments later, Johnny Davis hit a ball to first that was smoothly fielded by Smith. Sensing Davis was quickly coming down the line, Smith threw to pitcher Kevin McGowan who was covering, but it too went wide and Macias came around to score. Chris McFarland walked, but Clint Coulter's fly out to center brought the inning to a close.

However, much like Wednesday night's Met blowout, a Brevard County rally only added more fuel for the Met offense. This time, Champ Stuart drew a leadoff walk, promptly stole second and later came around to score on a De La Cruz double to right.

A similar sequence would happen in the fourth as the Manatees scored once again. Davis ripped a one-out double to right, then stole third on the next pitch. Two batters later, Coulter's single would bring him home. St. Lucie would manufacture a run with the top of the order as well when Stuart was hit by a Brandon Woodruff (0-1, 15.75 ERA) pitch. Stuart stole second and then tagged to third on a Jeff McNeil fly out to deep right center. Stuart, in fact, would've attempted to score if not for a very strong throw from the warning track to the infield by Coulter. It would be forgotten, as Stuart would score shortly after that on a wild pitch.

It would stay 7-3 until the bottom of the sixth inning when a 59-minute rain delay chased the teams from the field. When the game resumed, St. Lucie demonstrated that the rain had not put out the fire that was their offense. With reliever Scott Lieser now on the mound, Plaia mashed a leadoff double. After a Victor Cruzado single put runners at the corners, Stuart continued his great start to the season with an RBI single. Conforto's double to left made it 10-3. De La Cruz struck out, but Dominic Smith, who would finish with a three-hit night after logging just three hits over the past 27 at-bats, singled to bring home Conforto for the fourth and final run of the inning. The Mets once again batted the order.

After Brevard County got one back in the seventh on a Victor Roache single, his third RBI in as many games, St. Lucie continued to inflict misery on the 'Tees pitching staff. Pinch-hitter Yexion Ruiz worked a one-out walk, followed by consecutive singles from Stuart and McNeil to load the bases. Conforto picked up his seventh RBI in the last two games with a sacrifice fly to right. Stuart would score on a wild pitch and Smith's single would score McNeil to cap the Mets' scoring for the evening.

The Manatees went down fighting as they scored two in the ninth against rehabbing Major League reliever Bobby Parnell, thanks to a triple from Roache and a double by Garfield. However, Parnell would induce a foul out by Macias to end the game.

It would be one of those nights for both starting pitchers. Woodruff had a rough go of it in his first official start of the season. He gave up seven runs on seven hits, walked two and struck out one in four innings. Surprisingly, he would outlast Mets' starter Kevin McGowan, who struggled despite being staked to the early lead. McGowan gave up three runs (two earned) on seven hits. He walked three and fanned four in just 3.2 innings. Jake Kuebler (2-0, 0.00) earned the win with 2.1 scoreless innings of relief.

Another rehabbing member of the New York Met bullpen, Vic Black, pitched a scoreless 8th inning.

The Manatees will try to shed the struggle of the last two nights on Friday as they begin a three-game series with the Dunedin Blue Jays at Space Coast Stadium. RHP Javi Salas, (0-1, 1.50 ERA) will hope to get more run support this time after being on the wrong side of a 2-0 shutout last Sunday. He will be opposed by RHP Luis Santos (0-0, 5.06 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 PM (5:35 Central).
