Take DeMuth seriously as a candidate to play third base in Milwaukee at some point.

 

He was a "senior sign" out of college last year, taken in round five - it would be easy to look at that player and say, "roster filler", but that is not what he is.

 

DeMuth can hit, and he can handle third base, he just isn't, "sexy" for the position, which is to say he's more of a 12 homer per year guy than a 25 homer guy.

 

Think Jeff Cirillo and Kevin Seitzer, if he reaches his ceiling, he's that sort of player.

 

DeMuth is in Appleton right now, if things go well, he moves to High A later this year. I would guess his "best case scenario" is to complete A ball this year, play in AA next year, and be called up around June 1 in 2017. That's best case, but it's not impossible.

 

Dustin is 23 right now, so if he makes it he's a 25 or 26 year old rookie, who probably helps his team more than the average fan ever gives him credit for.

I could see the high average holding up better in Brevard then some other offensive profiles, so that is definitely a plus for the possibility of him moving a little bit quicker. Any idea on where the defense rates overall? The huge boost from Cirillo was that he has a well above average defender to go with the high OBP. I'd take that combo at 3rd everytime.

He hasn't played enough yet for me to have a definitive answer on his defense. In the little bit I've watched of him he's more steady than dynamic... but he moves well in all directions and has a decent arm. Is he going to make the flashy outstanding play that Taylor Brennan occasionally pulled off last year? I don't know... but I don't think he'll make the silly errors that Taylor made either.

 

Fielding percentage wise Brennan (Smith-Brennan on baseball reference in case people aren't able to find him) has 51 errors in 522 chances while DeMuth has 13 in 91 chances. Admittedly Fielding percentage is essentially meaningless at this point but I thought I'd save people the effort of looking it up themselves.

Having watched both of Demuth's stints in Helena, I would have to say that he was right

about where one would expect a 4 year college senior to be.

He more than held his own but I cannot say that he "shined" or was too advanced for the league.

He can play adequate 3B and has a nice swing but very little power was shown.

Having watched Cirillo when he came thru Helena, no comparison. Cirillo was a man among boys

at this level and I was not surprised to see the success he had.

Having also watched Brennan here, I would say that he has much more an upside. Better athlete,

stronger arm, much more power potential than Demuth.

It is a matter of Brennan putting it together, time will tell. Not to say either that Demuth won't

make it, nice ball player, but I would be surprised if he did.

Splitter, I hope you're right. But after seeing the Brewers' college bats flop after rookie ball, I'm going to take a wait-and-see approach. Bill Scott, Tony Festa, Grant Richardson, etc etc

Demuth is six months older than Taylor Brennan at Brevard (both 23 years old), and while it's only April, both have only two XBH's among their 19 base knocks apiece thus far.

 

And for Demuth, one of his XBH's is the phantom inside-the-park HR that we all saw via video was actually a foul ball.

Brennan did hit 16 HR last year in Appleton and 12 in 198 AB's in Helena the year before. It's fair to say he's shown power potential. He also has a good eye at the plate with 87 walks last year. Demuth, while a good hitter, hasn't shown much HR power or even doubles type power.

Tucker Neuhaus now back. So they have Matos, DeMuth and Neuhaus all on this team. I know Erickson stated that DeMuth would be a utility man at the start of the year. Presumably, they will go back to this plan. Dustin DeMuth can still change minds by hitting when he gets the chance. Competition is not a bad thing.

Brennan has shown a nice walk rate - roughly around 16% in his career. However, he strikes out way too much. 32.9%, 24.8%, 27.7% and 36.2%. That needs to improve. He has some power and walk ability, but probably not enough to offset the huge strike out rates.

This one seems pretty easy to spot - will there ever be power in DeMuth's bat, or not?

 

Dustin can certainly play this game, and he doesn't have to be a "power hitter" to make it, but he can't have zero power either.

I think he's a utility guy which is why the Brewers have been using him as such. He's not a flashy defender anywhere, doesn't have a plus tool, but he's steady. Matos has better tools across the board and I think Brennan was superior to him from a tools standpoint as well. DeMuth has the much higher floor though.

didn't know where else to put this, and I know no one else would appreciate this, but on this site- I had a dream two nights ago that the Brewers traded Dustin Demuth for first base depth with a AAAA 1B I had not heard of before. I remember having mixed emotions about it and was anticipating going to Brewerfan to read people's reactions about it and get more info. I had kind of forgotten about the dream, and had just operated under the assumption that this had happened. but when I went to check out the actual deal this morning, I realized it was a dream. how random is that? probably telling me, I'm consuming too much sports info. Has anyone else ever had a dream of the Brew Crew?
