Hate to say it but so far Coulter has been brutal in RF. Misplayed a more or less routine fly into a triple to cost Ortega a run in the 1st. Not the first misplayed ball this year either. Got to hope for improvement because it doesn't look like there is another position to go at this point.

Well there's always 1B, but he's athletic enough for RF... maybe his baseball instincts are just *that* bad, tough to say so early in his conversion.

Didn't really expect him to be a gold glover out there, still new to him. His bat can play anywhere so like said, 1b is always an option. I think he will be fine out there. He has a big arm, is a solid athlete, just needs to learn how to read the ball off the bat

Brevard County 2, St. Lucie 1

'Tees Pitching Dazzles in 2-1 Win

Ortega, Earls, Medlen dominate St. Lucie

By Jerry Durney / Brevard County Manatees

04/13/2015 11:58 PM ET

Viera, Fla. - After being stifled by good pitching over the weekend, the Brevard County Manatees (2-2) decided to turn the tables on Monday night. Manatee pitchers retired the final 17 batters they faced and did not surrender a hit after the third inning in a 2-1 win over the St. Lucie Mets (3-2).

The Mets took the lead in the opening frame when Jeff McNeil walked and then came around to score on a two-out triple by Matt Oberste. He was stranded when Dominic Smith flew out to left.

Brevard County nearly knotted the game up right away in the bottom half. Johnny Davis led off with a walk but was promptly picked off by St. Lucie starter Rob Whalen (0-1, 3.00 ERA). Chris McFarland and Clint Coulter each followed with singles but Taylor Brennan hit into a double play that cut the inning short.

St. Lucie had opportunities in the next three innings with multiple runners on base. but could not cash in, which gave the Manatees enough time to take charge.

The 'Tees fourth-inning rally began on a grounder to third by McFarland that Jhoan Urena was unable to barehand. Coulter then singled to left, and both would advance when Brennan grounded out to second. Victor Roache tied the score at one wih an RBI groundout to short.

The Manatees next turn at bat would be the deciding one. Rafael Neda led off with a double down the left field line. Angel Ortega then bunted for a single as Amed Rosario held on to the ball at short. Omar Garcia hit into a double play that allowed Neda to come home and make it 2-1, Brevard County.

The excellent effort from the pitching staff was led by Jorge Ortega (1-0, 1.50), who gave up one run and three hits over six innings of work. He walked two and struck out three in his first start of the season. His outing was followed by two perfect innings from Kaleb Earls. Casey Medlen then retired the side in order in the ninth to record his first save of the season.

The series resumes on Tuesday at Space Coast Stadium as RHP Hiram Burgos (0-1, 5.40 ERA) will start against RHP Miller Diaz (0-0, 0.00), who makes his first start of the season.

GRAND CHUTE, WI - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers outhit the Peoria Chiefs on Monday night at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium. But, the Chiefs made the most of their opportunities to defeat Wisconsin 3-0.

Wisconsin starting pitcher Luis Ortega kept the Chiefs (3-2) off the scoreboard until the third inning. The left-hander walked Andrew Sohn with one out. Darren Seferina followed with a triple into the corner in right field to drive in Sohn. Oscar Mercado was next and his sacrifice fly made it 2-0 in favor of Peoria.

The Timber Rattlers (0-5) had chances against Peoria starter Matt Pearce. They had two runners on with one out in the bottom of the first, but a base-running miscue turned a popup into a double play. Elvis Rubio doubled to start the second inning, but he was left stranded at third base. Wisconsin had two hits in the fifth inning, but could not do anything with them.

Reliever Milton Gomez entered in the top of the seventh for the Rattlers and struck out a pair. He also retired the first two batters in the top of the eighth. But, Gomez committed an error on a grounder by Sohn that allowed the Chiefs number nine hitter to reach second base. Seferina made Gomez pay for the mistake with a single to center to drive in Sohn for a 3-0 lead.

Carlos Leal led Wisconsin with a pair of hits in three trips to the plate. He is now 7-for-10 to start the season.

Rubio and Dustin DeMuth both had a hit for Wisconsin to extend their current hitting streaks to four games.

The final game of the series between the Rattlers and Chiefs is Tuesday afternoon. Orlando Torrez (0-0, 27.00) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Peoria has Will Anderson (0-0, 9.00) as their scheduled starter. Game time is 12:05pm.

Wisconsin Box Score

Wisconsin batters tallied yet another double digit strike out total, this time 10, for their lowest SO total of the season...

Carlos Leal continues to play very well, with 2 hits and 3 CS tonight. The first caught stealing was kind of a joke though as the pitch was in the dirt, Leal got throw off late, the throw was high and towards the 1B side of 2B, but he still got runner by 2 steps. I'm not sure why a runner that slow would ever be stealing, but hey I was happy to take a free out.

I find Luis Ortega somewhat intriguing. From what I gathered from the broadcast crew he was around 90 MPH on the stadium gun and as a secondary pitch he featured a slider or a curve. It's always tough to distinguish that pitch when sitting behind home plate, regardless of that off set camera view. NEW32 makes it more difficult than it should with their in-game production, they are still switching camera views mid pitch, I cannot explain how infuriating that is. At any rate Louis repeats his arm angle well with a true 3/4 delivery, but curiously his right foot never comes down in the same place. As best as I could tell he was stepping at his target, meaning left or right, but it was so exaggerated I couldn't be sure. 1 time he'd completely step across his body closing himself off, the next time he'd open up way up and fall off towards 3B (he's a lefty), and then sometimes he'd step mostly at the plate and the ball would go where he wanted to go.

The first walk to the #9 hitter really hurt him, he would have given up a run on that walk regardless as the next batter up was LH and would had a double down the RF if the OF was shading him to pull. However the RF Elvis Rubio was playing way over in RC field as the OF was shaded the opposite way, and by the time Rubio finally ran down the ball in the RF corner that batter had a triple.

Jacob Gatewood was behind everything early in the game... there's letting ball get into your stance and then there is starting so late you aren't able to hit a ball fair. By his 3rd AB he did a better job being on time to the ball.

Rubio has a pretty quick bat, he mishit a down the middle belt high FB off the end of his bat but still put it out near the wall in LC for the double, unfortunately he was left stranded.

David Denson hit the ball hard twice, had a curious baserunning mistake in the 1st, was tentative trying to a catch foul ball over by the wall, and got caught guessing his entire last AB when he struck out looking.

Monte Harrison's build looks exactly like Carlos Gomez, he had a single and made a nice catch in CF.

I fell asleep on the couch during the commercial break before Milton Gomez entered the game and then woke up for the 9th. I'll have to watch him more before I comment on him further.

Final: Colorado Springs 9, Round Rock 2

Cravy, Offense Carry Sky Sox To 9-2 Win Over Round Rock

Brewers' 24th Ranked Prospect Earns Win in Triple-A Debut

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO - The Sky Sox rebounded in a big way on Monday night as each Sox starter reached base at least once in a 9-2 victory over the visiting Round Rock Express before a crowd of 1,526 at Security Service Field.

Starter Tyler Cravy (1-0, 3.00) shook off some early rust before turning in six solid innings of work, allowing two runs on six hits while walking one and striking out three along the way. After giving up a run on a double, single and two wild pitches to his first two batters, Cravy settled in, retiring seven consecutive batters before giving up another hit.

The Colorado Springs offense enjoyed similar success as the team pounded out 16 hits on their way to scoring nine runs. Singles by Matt Long and Elian Herrera and a hard line out by Matt Clark to start the home half of the first set up cleanup man Jason Rogers for a prime RBI spot. Rogers didn't waste the opportunity, slapping a slicing line drive down the right field line to plate the two runners. Shane Peterson added an RBI single to score Rogers, completing the first inning scoring off of Express starter Ross Wolf (0-1,18.00).

Wolf would never find his groove, giving up another four earned runs in the third inning as each batter got a turn at the plate. A quick flyout by Clark to start the inning led to four consecutive singles by Rogers, Peterson, Bryan Petersen, and Luis Sardinas. The inning's big blow came off the bat of backup catcher Nevin Ashley whose booming triple to the right center field gap plated two runs, giving him his first RBIs of the season.

After giving up an additional run in the fifth inning on the strength of a bloop triple hit into the Bermuda triangle in shallow left field by Round Rock centerfielder Jared Hoying, Cravy finished strong with a 1-2-3 sixth inning.

Left-hander Jimmy Reyes replaced the struggling Wolf in the fourth inning and gave the Express three strong scoreless innings of relief work before handing the ball over to Cody Kendall. The righty would walk two of his first three batters en route to a two-run inning for the Sky Sox. If not for a run-scoring double play groundout by Ashley, Kendall may have been in for some serious trouble as the damage was kept under control. Elian Herrera continued his torrid start to 2015 with an RBI single for the Sox final run of the game.

In a starkly different performance to Sunday's slugfest, the Colorado Springs bullpen was lights out on Monday night. Right-handers Ariel Peńa and Corey Knebel combined for three innings of scoreless relief, allowing three hits and striking out five total batters.

Things are looking up for the Sox as Cravy's start was the longest by a Colorado Springs starter in the season's early goings and the trio of Herrera, Rogers and Sardinas have all hit safely in the first five games of 2015.

The Sky Sox will look to build on tonight's win on Tuesday night at Security Service Field as 2011 first round pick Taylor Jungmann (0-0, 2.25) takes the hill for his second start of 2015 against Round Rock right-hander Anthony Renaudo (1-0, 0.00). First pitch is slated for 6:35 PM (7:35 Central).

Colorado Springs Box Score

Some much-needed sanity to the proceedings here. Hopefully the veteran relievers will excuse the fact that the names Knebel and Pena are much more exciting than Perez, Wooten, Kintzler, etc. right now. Jason Rogers needs to be penciled (no, inked) in to the third base spot every game, we know he can play first if needed. We can choose not to over-analyze the team's offensive lines each night, but that doesn't mean we can't ignore them, that would be denying ourselves pleasure. Through five mountain-air games, Elian Herrera's OPS is 1.446, Rogers' 1.228. Stay healthy, Tyler Cravy, as Brian Anderson repeated on a broadcast this week, Brewers brass really really likes you. Three wild pitches an odd number in this one, though.

Strong outing from Ortega lifts Manatees past Mets

Michael Parsons, FLORIDA TODAY

VIERA – The Brevard County Manatees evened their record behind a strong pitching performance from Jose Ortega Monday night at Space Coast Stadium.

Ortega, making his Manatees debut, allowed just one run on three hits in six innings of work to pick up the win as Brevard County defeated St. Lucie 2-1.

The right-hander struck out three and retired the final 12 batters he faced.

“Ortega did a heck of a job,” Brevard County manager Joe Ayrault said. “He was very aggressive. It was an outstanding debut.”

St. Lucie’s lone run came in the top of the first when Jeff McNeil walked and later scored on Matt Oberste’s triple. Champ Stuart and Michael Conforto were each held hitless for the first time this season for the Mets.

A rough night on the bases kept the Manatees off the scoreboard as Johnny Davis was caught stealing twice and picked off once. Chris McFarland was also caught stealing and picked off once.

“The guys were just overly aggressive. It is early in the season and it is something we will be talking to the guys about,” Ayrault said. “Trusting it and not trying to do too much.”

But the Manatees broke through in the fourth as McFarland reached on a perfect bunt single and scored on a Victor Roache fielder’s choice.

Catcher Rafael Neda scored the other run, leading off with a double and scoring when Omar Garcia hit into a double play.

“Even though Garcia doesn’t get the RBI, he did a good job of getting the run home,“ Ayrault said of his left fielder.

That was all the Manatees needed as Kaleb Earls pitched two perfect innings and Casey Medlen pitched the ninth for his first save.

The Manatees and St. Lucie will meet again tonight at Space Coast Stadium for a 6:35 PM start (5:35 Central). Hiram Burgos will take the mound for Brevard County against Miller Diaz for the Mets.
