Minor League Transactions - 2015 Regular Season

Brewer Fanatic Staff

The entire 2014 DSL outfield made its way stateside this spring, so among the Brewers' re-loads is another signing with prior experience.

OF Anderson Jesus -- love the "backwards" names -- listed at 6'2, 168, the same as Baseball Reference listed him back when he played for the DSL Rangers in 2011 and 2012. Now 21 years old, Jesus has been idle (not sure if injury-related) for the past two seasons.

Ben Guez (and his .914 OPS) lands on the Sky Sox DL, Bryan Petersen back on the active roster.

We hope to learn more, probably leg-related, but we can't rule out oblique or other possibilities...

It is a leg injury for Guez, sorry no more specific...

Wow, in the

we linked to Friday, Colorado Springs Manager Rick Sweet indicates that Ben Guez' leg injury (still no exact details) was likely season-ending. Just an awful blow for the 28-year-old; Sweet indicates how much the Brewers like him, and that Milwaukee would like to continue with him (Guez would once again be a minor league free agent this fall).

We have a note directly in to Ben wishing him well and to see if we can learn more.

Can't imagine how disappointed Guez is right now. With Davis scheduled for knee surgery, (hopefully) a trade of Parra on the horizon, and Schafer not getting the job done the door was open to finally make the big leagues.

The Manatees are already carrying 13 pitchers (roster), and now with the news that RHP Johnny Hellweg is joining the squad soon, it'll be interesting to see how creative the Brewers get, because the starters are going deep, and the many healthy bullpen guys are all doing their jobs nicely (stats).

Well, this doesn't address the pending overflow, but via the Manatees --

RHP Manny Barreda has been transferred from Brevard County to Biloxi.

RHP Kaleb Earls has been reinstated from the Brevard County DL.

***

Earls, with 13 K's and just one walk in 16.1 innings this season, had been sidelined since 5/13.

Congratulations, RHP Tyler Cravy, now on the 25- and 40-man rosters, up from Colorado Springs.

RHP Tyler Wagner optioned to Biloxi, partly due to circumstances with the 17-inning affair Sunday.

The Shuckers won't need to make a move to make room for Wagner until he formally reports, which may not be until Wednesday.

Brewers announce RH reliever Wirfin Obispo is moved from Biloxi to Colorado Springs (takes Tyler Cravy's roster spot).

It appears there's also room on the roster for catcher Juan Centeno's return to AAA later today.

So the guy with the highest ERA on the Biloxi roster gets promoted to fill a roster spot? That logic somehow seems perfect for this organization.

Adam Rygg of the Brewer Nation blog and Twitter account indicates the Brewers have released RHP Harvey Martin from the Timber Rattlers roster, where he had been on the DL since mid-April.

Martin was an undrafted free agent signee after the 2013 draft, he'll turn 26 in July. We wish him well.

Original note was from May 22nd, the day after the injury occurred while running out a groundout.

UPDATE: Apparently Guez' injury is similar to that suffered by Rickie Weeks in August of 2013 (Adam McCalvy article from that time that provides quite a bit of detail).

Obviously a major injury, and we wish Ben the very best, as noted earlier.

That is really too bad, seasons like this are tough but it is always nice when guys like him get a shot in the bigs and I think he would have received that shot this year. Seems to have on base skills and may have been an option off the bench in 2016.

Sky Sox player wakes up to news of promotion

By Brent Briggeman, Colorado Springs Gazette

Rick Sweet started Tuesday morning with some excitement, telling his latest Sky Sox player that he was on the way to big leagues.

The Colorado Springs manager woke up Shane Peterson with the good news that he was now a member of the Milwaukee Brewers.

"I called him this morning and told him to get his butt out of bed," Sweet said. "I said, 'How can I send you to the big leagues if you're sleeping. Let's go.'"

Peterson has been in the majors before, playing two games with Oakland in 2013. He batted eight times, collecting one hit, one walk and driving in a run.

This season, Peterson had a slash line of .320/.387/.523 in 47 games. His 55 hits lead the Sky Sox and his 27 RBIs are second only to Matt Clark's 29.

Peterson is the 10th player to go from Colorado Springs to Milwaukee this season.

"That's what this is all about, get as many of these guys out of here as I can," Sweet said. "Without a doubt."

With OF Shane Peterson taking the roster spot, RHP Tyler Cravy is optioned back to AAA Colorado Springs.

The Brewers don't need a 5th starter until Tuesday 6/9, but Cravy must remain in AAA for ten days after his option unless another pitcher on the big league club is injured, so he will not be the 5th starter that day -- bummer.

so, since the starter on the ninth cant be wagner or cravy can we speculate who it might be? The guys that would make sense that would all be rested are Lopez, Thornburg, Jungmann, & Hall.

I personally am kind of hoping that Thornburg gets his shot again, he should have never lost his spot to begin with. I bet they will be watching his start closely tonight!

Outside of Thornburg a part of me would like to see what would happen if they gave lopez a shot! I really dont think hes ready, but hes coming off a monster game so who knows.

Besides the minor league side i am sure Blazek has a good shot to start and if he didnt have a suspension i wonder if they would consider will smith. Smith was brought in to start and since has developed a good third pitch, id llike to see what he could do.

Via the Brewers Player Development Office --

To make room for RHP Tyler Wagner on the Biloxi roster, C Tyler LaTorre has been transferred to Helena.

Also, LHP Tyler Alexander has been released.

More on Alexander in a bit...

From January 31st:

Baseball America --

Brewers LHP Tyler Alexander

Suspension Length: 50 games

Violating Substances: Drug of abuse (second positive test)

Alexander, 23, a lefthander out of Florida International, was a 27th-round pick in 2013. He’s gone 7-6, 4.28 in two minor league seasons, walking 4.10/9 but striking out 11.27/9.

***

Also, even though Alexander spent most of 2014 with the Timber Rattlers, because he was on the Maryvale roster to end the season, his suspension won't begin until June when the rookie league season begins. So at minimum, he's out until late July.

Alexander's status as a Maryvale Brewer instead of a Wisconsin Timber Rattler was prompted solely by his involvement in a HBP-immediately-after-surrendering-a-HR-sparking-a-brawl incident last July. It's going to be tough for him to salvage much of anything in 2015, although here's to a big August for the young man.

Sigh...

And today we get news of Alexander's release.

RHP Scott Lieser (of leg-kick fame) has been activated from the Brevard County DL and transferred to Wisconsin. Lieser had been on the DL since May 20th when RHP Manny Barreda rejoined the organization. Lieser's stay may have been a "taxi-squad" type of stint, that's unclear at this time.

A spot opened up with the Rattlers because RHP Luke Curtis was placed on the 7-day DL with an unnamed injury. Curtis struggled Monday in his most recent outing.

Via the Brewers Player Development Staff --

At Colorado Springs, RHP Rob Wooten lands on the DL with an unspecified injury.

While unfortunate for Rob, it does allow for two relievers to receive well-deserved promotions.

Recently-turned 28-year-old RH reliever Jaye Chapman will miss all the new stadium hoopla in Biloxi, but probably doesn't mind (well, too much) as he'll join the Sky Sox now. As you can see via his stat line link, he's been outstanding, often placed in clutch situations, too. Chapman's road back to affiliated ball, coming off double hip surgery, was well-documented this fall.

Also moving up, from Brevard County to Biloxi where he will get to join the homecoming party, is soon-to-be 23-year-old (June 9th) LH reliever Trevor Seidenberger, and the 2013 12th round pick out of TCU has posted amazing numbers as well.

This also gives Biloxi broadcaster Chris Harris the dream battery of Seidenberger / Weisenburger (Adam). I've been rooting for that for some time now.

Congrats to both Jaye and Trevor; get well, Rob.

I think they said today (Thursday) for Hellweg in Brevard Mass. Haven't seen an official announcement yet though. Seidenberger has reverse splits BAA is .250 for left handed hitters and 0.065 against righties. That slider boring in on the right handers has been really tough to handle.
