RHP Andy Moye (career stats), who was released in December, will attempt to get back to affiliated ball via the indy ball route, having signed Friday with the Wichita Wingnuts of the American Association. Moye's winter ball gig in Venezuela had been cut short by a shoulder injury in November. Moye was drafted by the Brewers in the 15th round in 2011 out of Georgia Southern.

Similarly, former supplemental 1st round RHP Kyle Heckathorn (career stats), released on the same day as Moye last December, has hooked up with the York (PA) Revolution of the independent Atlantic League. Heckathorn also had a rough winter campaign, agreeing with team owners to cut his Australian stint short. Heckathorn turns 27 in June.

Minor League Roster by Number

So we now know which 2014 Dominican Summer League players are currently stateside in Maryvale. That means it's likely, but not a guarantee, that each will remain in the U.S. and will debut with either the Arizona Rookie or Helena team this June.

PITCHERS

LHP Joan De La Cruz, 20 years old, 6'3", 12 starts last year in 3rd year in system

RHP Marcos Diplan, just 18 years old, prized acquisition in the Yovani Gallardo deal, click for his excellent numbers

RHP Orlando Torrez, turns 23 in April, rewarded after four summers in the Dominican, congrats to him

POSITION PLAYERS

SS Gilbert Lara - 17 years old (great photo here) - Little surprise that the $3.2 million bonus baby would begin stateside, since he did well in fall instructionals. 2015 will mark formal pro debut.

CF Nicolas Pierre, 18, $800,000 bonus, showed nice pop in his rookie DSL campaign

SS Franly Mallen, 18 in May, also signed to an $800,000 bonus, didn't excel in his first go-round on the island (.618 OPS in a tough environment for offense)

OF Joantgel Segovia, 18, right-handed slap hitter from Venezuela posted an incredible .384/.457/.446 line as a 17-year-old rookie, winning the DSL batting crown

OF Yerald Martinez, 19, .756 OPS in his 2nd pro season netted him a DSL All-Star nod

C Kevin Martinez, 20, switch-hitter improved in his 2nd and 3rd years, has played some first base as well

C Johel Atencio, 18, signed out of Panama for $130,000, comes stateside after just one season (.687 OPS)

This leaves approx. 17 players in the Dominican Academy, and the Brewers will especially be in need of outfield depth there, we'll look for any new names as the spring marches on. They won't be big-name signings at this point (not until the new July signing period).

We don't see RHP Doni Arias' name - his last appearance was in early July, so there's probably an injury issue there. RHP Melvin Tejada was a possibility coming off his 3rd DSL season as well.

SO excited to see what Joantgel Segovia can do. hitting close to .400 at any level at 17 years old is impressive!

MLB Pipeline (Jonathon Mayo) has some nice looks (all with video) at Brewer prospects, including Coulter, Denson and Medeiros. There's also a Q&A with Medeiros. There's also a lot of quotes from Reid Nichols.

Some other things in the article include a discussion about Brandon Woodruff - the club seems to really like him. Nichols said he may jump to AA to start the year.

My apologies if this is posted elsewhere.

Position switch: noticed in Sunday's box score that Carlos Leal (MiLB page), the Brewers 34th round pick out of Delta State (MS) last June, was behind the plate. Leal saw limited action last summer in Maryvale as a RH reliever.

But this is nothing new for Leal - from draft time last year via The Bolivar (MS) Commercial

"Leal (a LH bat), who played catcher at DSU for two seasons, finished up 2014 with a home run, 37 RBIs, 56 hits and a .359 batting average in 46 games. Leal threw out 12 of 42 base runners trying to steal and committed just five errors with a .980 fielding percentage. In 2013, Leal hit .310 with a home run and 27 RBIs in 45 games.

Leal was drafted as a pitcher, because of his strong throwing arm. Leal played his first two seasons of college ball at East Central Community College and drafted in the 33rd round of the MLB draft by the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2012 as a catcher.

“A lot of people had interest in him,” Delta State head baseball coach Mike Kinnison said about Leal. “I knew it would be late rounds, but I’m excited he got an opportunity. He had two great years for us. He was one of those hard workers you really appreciate as a coach. He has a great attitude and for him to get an opportunity is a dream come true for him.”

Leal turns 24 this July.

In today's notes on JSonline it says that the Crew is considering starting the trio of Harrison, Gatewood and Medeiros at Wisconsin.

I like the idea of being aggressive and getting the talented players into full season ball right away. I thought the team would, however, be safe and put Gatewood and Medeiros due to last season's struggles. No matter, I hope at least Harrison is put at Wisconsin.

I could see Medeiros having managed to make enough progress even with the struggles last year, but Gatewood just seems like a stretch with the contact issues he was having. That said given the Brewers tendency to be cautious if they are convinced it's hard not to see that as good news.

I don't forsee anyway Monte Harrison is in Wisconsin opening day. He has earned that the way Taylor did for his first full season. Gatewood is tough to decide on. They will have Avilies at SS and Tucker Neuhaus/Stervin Matos @ third base. I'm curious to the strides he's made with how hard he had worked this off-season. Maybe a 2 month Coulter stop? If not doing well, go back down to Helena in June?

FORMERLY BrewCrewWS2008 and YoungGeezy don't even remember other names used
