Why The International Market Is So Messed Up

June 15, 2015 by Ben Badler

The problem is, while teams may have more resources and scouting platforms at their disposal, the market is moving faster than ever. By the time MLB held its annual international showcase in the Dominican Republic in February, there were already more than 100 players with agreements in place for July 2, including most of the high-profile players at that showcase. Right now, teams are already gearing up to make aggressive moves in 2016.

Good lord, the international market is such a big mess. The signing pool helped a little bit but they need for an international draft like 20 years ago.

Scouting Reports on Top 30 Prospects for July 2

International Forecasts for All 30 Teams

July 1, 2015 by Ben Badler

Primary prospect the Brewers are linked with is Venezuelan catcher Jose Sibrian, who should go for around $500k. He is the #29 prospect on BA's Top 30 International Prospects list. Recently converted from third base, Sibrian is said to have a plus arm, with the potential to play solid defense behind the dish. The bat is not as advanced, though he has shown some in-game power.

The only other name mentioned was another Venezuelan, outfielder Jesus Lujano.

The same prospect And That linked to earlier, Jose Sibrian, is the only one linked to the Brewers. I have to wonder if this is about a dearth of talent or the fact that the team is once again putting the majority of it's budget towards the MLB roster in a season of declining attendance and therefore revenue?

I don't expect the Brewers to max out their pool every year, but after 2 years of making a splash it would seem we are back to the bargain bin for the most part. I'd like to see a couple of mid range bonuses in that $500k range or more each year, $500k is basically the equivalent of a 4th round pick. I hope to be proven wrong.

With how talented this years international class is, hard to understand why they are backing off. They had Pierre/Mallen then Lara, now maybe sign a guy for 500k? Make a splash

There are 30 teams out there trying to make a splash (with the exception of teams that can't due to making too much of a splash previously), so the Brewers could have just been outbid on the players they thought were truly worth making a run at.

Or maybe they are being cheap. But they're going to need to start a trend and go back to being cheap for more than one year before I personally am willing to be bothered by it.

As I noted in the link report yesterday, the Brewers are just low on any players coming out of the Dominican academy. Maybe it makes some for the Brewers to spread bonuses around to 2nd and 3rd tier players this year, just so they can get the number of quality to semi-quality prospects up.

I don't know how the International signings work, so can anyone "in the know" give me a quick rundown on why they don't have a draft for international players? Seeing teams like the Dodgers and Cubs (and other bigger market teams) clean house on these international players each year just doesn't seem very fair. Are they close at all to changing the rules regarding the signing of international players?

Could the Brewers be more aggressive in this market, but choose not to because they are cheap? Are they trying to avoid some kind of tax for going over a spending limit that bigger markets aren't afraid of?

Thanks in advance. I'm just trying to get a better understanding of all of this.

I don't really think there's such a thing as a quick rundown, I would suggest reading the various BA articles regarding the signings over the last 3 international signing threads.

Brewers Agree To Sign No. 29 International Prospect Jose Sibrian

July 2, 2015 by Ben Badler

The Brewers have agreed to sign Venezuelan catcher Jose Sibrian, the No. 29 international prospect for July 2. His bonus will be $550,000.

Sibrian, a 16-year-old righthanded hitter, is 6 feet, 175 pounds and hasn’t been catching for long but has already earned praise for his defense and plus arm. He trains with Jose Montero.

Baseball America subscribers can access a complete scouting report on Sibrian.

The Brewers could see some upside in this - if they end up spending $600k or so, they could trade the remaining $1.8M in bonus pool money to the Cubs. No idea what the return would be (probably worse than just spending the $1.8M), but better than nothing.

I believe every signing over $15K counts against the pool, I'd have to go back and look for the exact #, but you'd think the Brewers would at least be looking to get "prospects" back onto the team after only singing Lara last year and then signing a bunch of 2nd and 3rd chance players to fill out this year's roster.

My point is that Brewers would conceivably have around $1 million of pool space available if they didn't sign another big name so And That's premise still holds, but the Brewers didn't give up much to get extra money to sign Lara last year. Also a reminder that money itself isn't traded, but the "slots".

edit. Million, not $1.

I know a lot of fans want to see the Brewers plunge into the international market every year, but if your scouts aren't rating these guys highly then you don't waste the money. $2mil+ is a lot of money for a 16 year old. You also have to consider a lot of these guys are looking for more than money. Sometimes they prefer big markets and teams on the coast.

It's a complex process and a huge gamble. You don't just spend money because you can. You have to be smart.

Well not to ruin the suspense for you, but here (LINK) is a sneak peak of where and what amount guys are expected to sign for tomorrow.

I'm counting like 30.5mil on the Dodgers signings if all true.....They just traded one of their slots to Toronto for I don't know what. But yeah You have about 3mil to spend...nah we'll trade some 100ks only have 2mil to spend....And still spend 30+mil. Wow such a joke and again Milw isn't trading their slots to this moment. Spend in 2016 Team trade everything you have in 2015. GM can't pull the trigger! So afraid to look bad in the outcome apparently.
