2015 International Signing Thread

Depressing looks like Brewers are not in any type of position to land a top 30 international prospects http://m.mlb.com/prospects/2015?list=int

Cubs are favorite for I believe 5 of them.....

Cuban Pitcher Vladimir Gutierrez Closer To Signing

May 7, 2015 by Ben Badler

The Angels, Diamondbacks, Rays, Red Sox and Yankees have all exceeded their current 2014-15 international bonus pools by more than 15 percent, so they won’t be allowed to sign any pool-eligible player for more than $300,000 for two years beginning on July 2, which would take them out of the running for Gutierrez.

Can anyone explain what the Brewers have available to spend? It's very confusing.

Last year they spent $3.1 M on Lara. I believe the Brewers made a trade with Oakland for some international salary slot for 2015. So how much money does Milwaukee have in 2015? The system is rather confusing.

http://www.baseballamerica.com/international/2015-16-mlb-international-bonus-pools/

Lists the bonus pools for each team.

Milwaukee would have $2,389,300 to work with originally. They can add up to 50% of that total before they begin inducing some sort of penalty.

The problem is suddenly, the Yankees, Cubs, Rangers these teams don't care about the penalties and will go ahead and spend 12-25mil in the period roughly.

If 2.4million is the max for Milw to throw at a top prospect like 3.1mil was for Lara. You're talking these High Market teams essentially buying 4-8 top 30 ranked prospects. So put 3-4 of those together in this signing period you're looking at 16-32 of the top ranked prospects going to those teams. Like the Yankees did last year, just cornering the entire market and leaving handful of scraps for the market's like Milwaukee to maybe nab one of.

Going to just put this. Since I don't see Milw being tied to any of MLB's top 30. I'd plan on them using bonus slots in trade and trading them away this season maybe for improved prospects for a Lind/Lohse/Garza/Parra/KRod trade.

You look at the bad season lying ahead and see that Dback/Rockies pretty much got 5mil to work with as worst/2nd worst. Let the Cubs/Rangers and such teams do their over signings take on the penalty and come next season with Milw having a top 3 money to pull from with what? 8-9 franchises limited to 300k maxes. Go get your Internationals in 2016 with a 7.5mil budget after slot trading. Prospects that were 2-5mil to sign with all the big markets out may fall to being 1.7-3.3mil top price. And we can snag 3 or 4 then.

Thanks, due80. That's helpful. I honestly need a tutorial on how the international money works but what you provided gives me a nice start. I see that the teams get a pool that relates to inverse records, similar to draft order. But, I know that you can also make trades for international money and that there are spending penalties and caps. The trades, caps, and spending periods are all mystifying to me. Oh well, I do appreciate your link because it gets me on the path.

I agree with your premise to possibly load up in 2016 because after Moncada went to the Bosox I haven't heard much from the Brewers. On the other hand, we do remember that last year Doug Melvin was royally ticked off that the Lara thing got leaked so early so it is possible we are in on someone and it's not public. Maybe the fact that we tried with Moncada is a hopeful sign?

In the BA article listed above about signing pool amounts, it states "The Angels, Rays, Red Sox and Yankees will also be unable to sign any pool-eligible players for more than $300,000 during the 2015-16 and 2016-17 signing periods." As well as the D-backs.

Won't that help the Brewers now, as well as next year? And in the future, as the Cubs, Rangers, Jays may over spend this year and incur penalties for next year(s).

I think they should and hopefully could play for 1-2 of the top 20 guys each year and not incur any penalty so they can remain in the hunt yearly.

Also, our pool will be much higher next year assuming we finish in bottom 5 in the league this year.

Why The International Market Is So Messed Up

June 15, 2015 by Ben Badler

The problem is, while teams may have more resources and scouting platforms at their disposal, the market is moving faster than ever. By the time MLB held its annual international showcase in the Dominican Republic in February, there were already more than 100 players with agreements in place for July 2, including most of the high-profile players at that showcase. Right now, teams are already gearing up to make aggressive moves in 2016.

Historically the Brewers have done well in Venezuela so we'll have to see if there's any impact.
