Lazaro Alonso

ewitkows

Another Cuban kid who could help us out and should be cheaper than Yoan Moncada. Since we don't have much upside at 1B in the minors. He's 6'3 183lbs.

The 19-year-old Alonso should draw interest from MLB teams, according to Badler. Alonso was hitting .299/.436/.494 in 110 plate appearances with more walks (20) than strikeouts (19) at the time he defected.

David Denson has quite a bit of upside in the minors at 1B; but also has a long ways to go to reach that upside. You really have to like that OBP. So long as the money required is reasonable its worth a shot to sign as many of these young Cuban prospects as possible. You are basically adding the equivalent of 1st through 3rd round picks to the farm system in most of these cases I imagine.

515 ft home run for Denson, not sure if it was with a metal bat or not, but still impressive. If a guy is hitting em that far, cut down the swing a bit and make more contact. Let the pitcher supply the power.

Dont let that fool you, Denson has great power... sometimes a guy needs to start making good consistent contact before the power comes through in-game ABs. I am one that thinks/hopes that will come for Denson. He started to show a good handle on the zone last season, once that comes next is consistently barreling the ball, then the power should come. His numbers have showed that hes making those strides, could be a real nice player.

I am more interested in the 25-29 year old Cubans available. They dont count toward the INTL signing pool. Surely a million dollars on say three such prospects each, may net you one or two league min guys who are above average even. Heck, sign the lot of the 25 to 29 year old guys and have an AA or AAA squad called "The Cubans".
