ChiSox Sign Nicky Delmonico One Week After Brewers Release Him

So much for KRod restocking the farm system.

That was far and away my least favorite KRod justification...

I think Dustin Demuth is better. Struggled stepping up at A last year but I think he can hit.

Sthervin Matos as well, who just turned 21 today. As you said though, they both need to prove something in A ball. Demuth is a little old for his level.

We don't usually get a good handle on the personality characteristics of the player. With all of the advanced metrics, this is one critical area of analysis that is well shielded from us, the fans.

I have a feeling, and it's just that, that Delmonico was not a guy that was going to "get it" despite his obvious plus talents.

He's young. His suspension was for amphetamines. He could be self medicating for ADHD. Maybe not, but they're incredibly addicting. Maybe his time off for personal reasons was trying to go clean or the proverbial vacation in the hoosegow*. Neither of those make him a bad guy. Its disappointing for the Brewers, but they're working with 7 or so teams of young, high testosterone males.

*I hope you guys appreciate me bringing the old guy words

It's one thing in a regular job if your boss calls you on a Saturday and somehow you 'forgot your cell phone at home', but quite another to not respond to your baseball team. Disappointing though, and I'll really be ticked if he actually makes it with the White Sox.

There is certainly more to the story than we are being told. The Brewers, who pay his salary, could not contact him? He did not return phone calls? Does he have an agent?

Yet the White Sox just look him up in the white pages (so 1980s), give him a buzz, have a chat, no problem, and sign him up.

And... the White Sox do not care at all about the past. Interesting organisation that does not care at all about your past. Player does not show for spring training. Player suspended for use of something. Player had other time away for some reason. Player goes awol from his employer. SOMETHING is going on. I bet that something was communicated to the White Sox.

I am not sure what to think. I guess I will not think much. But for the Brewers to actually care for a guy and 'get him' and work with his strange behaviour... THEN the player decides he does not care for the Brewers, but, well... he will care for his new team... all odd. And it leaves a bad taste in my mouth over it.

Part of the risk in investing in high school players. Yes, Delmonico is several years beyond that now, but you learn quite a bit about decision-making, maturity, and personal responsibility in college. Maybe it's medical, maybe he's never been held accountable for his actions before, but this is part of the higher-risk part of kids coming out of high school.
