Dayan Viciedo

He's being released. He's right handed and can at least to pretend to play a little outfield. He's still young and he's shown some power, he might be worth a shot to pair with lind.

Hes hit .291 .331 .507 against lefties for his career

Viciedo is an awful outfielder. Over the past three years, he ranks as the 5th worst outfielder (with regard to defense) in all of baseball by Fangraphs. It's kind of like Prince Fielder playing the OF (okay, not that bad, but you get the idea).

Actually, he kind of reminds me of Kevin Mench. And that's not a compliment.

Would be a very good signing because he crushes LHP so you can pair him with Lind at 1B (and get combined production that is near the top of the league at that position, I would wager), and use him as a 5th OF with a bit of pop off the bench. We already have a plus 4th OF in Parra, who is a defensive specialist, so who is our current 5th OF? Schafer, another defense-first player who is redundant on this roster? A guy like Viciedo makes perfect sense, even given his poor defense. Platoon player vs. LHP and a bench bat with power.

No thanks. Luc will do just fine vs. lefties since there are not that many of them to face.

I'm not keen on this guy, but I think I recall when the Sox signed him that he's more of a 1B who got moved to the OF to accommodate someone else at 1B.

Point: I don't care much about his OF defense. And we seem to have 1B sufficiently covered now.

Konerko / Dunn were at 1st. I think Viciedo came up as a third baseman if memory serves me right.

I'd be interested in Viciedo, regardless of defensive limitations. That is some serious mash against lefties.

Parra could always be used as a later-innings defensive replacement &/or counter to the inevitable ROOGYs that'd be trotted out later in games to neutralize Viciedo.

After looking at it more closely from last years team, I guess I wouldn't mind bringing him in because we were not very good against left handed pitching this season. (Could we be worse letting Gennett hit against them?) Yikes.

2014 ML RANKINGS:

vs. LHP: 1256 at bats(7.75 per/gm), .705 OPS(18th ranked), 27th ranked in avg, 26th ranked in OBP

vs. RHP: 4206 at bats(25.96 per/gm), .708 OPS(11th ranked), 9th ranked in avg, 15th ranked in OBP

After looking at it more closely...

I just took a closer look at Viciedo's splits & am less enthusiastic about him as an option. Said v.LHP splits are as follows --

Career: .837 (487 PA)

2014: .679 (151 PA)

2013: .709 (118 PA)

2012: 1.033 (133 PA)

2011: 1.020 (35 PA)

So the reality is that, basically, his off-the-charts 2012 is heavily skewing his career OPS against lefties. In fact, he posted higher OPS numbers against righties in 2014 & 2013.

The failure against lefties last year was odd, but I think that the same unit can rebound.

Overbay, Reynolds and Segura all hit below .200 against lefties. The first two are gone, and the latter has a good chance of rebounding against them (Segura had an .865 OPS in 2013 vs lefties).

Lucroy, Braun and Gomez were all about average against lefties last year (of the three, the best OPS was .838), when they have traditionally pounded lefties (each has hit .900+ and 1.000+ OPS vs lefties in the recent past). Davis was also a bit underwhelming against them last season (.777 OPS), and could easily improve against lefties.

A-Ram was the only Brewer who really crushed lefties last year. It just confirms that the club needs Braun and Segura to get back on track, it needs A-Ram to stay healthy, it needs Gomez and Luc to keep producing, and it needs Davis to improve. Losing Rickie hurts, but it's not insurmountable. I don't think anyone expects Scooter to hit .103 vs lefties, but we'll see. In 2013, we were 8th in the majors with a .736 OPS vs lefties. I think getting back to that spot is entirely reachable.

He might be worth a minor league deal and maybe you could start him out in AAA, and let him play some 1B to re-acquaint himself with the position and put up some numbers for his confidence in Colorado Springs. He's going to be brutal defensively anywhere you put him so he has to hit more than he has in recent seasons.

Chicago radio discussion a few weeks back basically intimated he had no value whatsoever and that he might have a nice career....in Japan!
