Really good in 2013 with a 1.11 ERA, .947 WHIP and a 2.17 FIP

But then a 4.32 ERA, 3.58 FIP, and a 1.335 WHIP in 2014

Definitely fits Melvins thought process that relievers are good one year, down the next and then Hopefully back up the year after that

So, #Brewers have one-year deal major league deal with LHP Neal Cotts. Has passed his physical. Don't know money yet. 40-man move necessary.

but this is not the only move it was part one of two moves for the pen

confirmed, 3 mill 1 year deal, ill take it...now lets see what we do at closer, got a feeling it will be part IV of K ROD

Tom tweeted the other day, Brewers are more interested in Papelbon deal.

Ok complete the trade with the Phillies and call it an offseason.

This pen will be really good.

Papelbon

Broxton

Smith

Henderson

Cotts

Thornburg

Jeffress

Kintzler

Then again, Haudricourt said at Fanfest that the Papelbon rumors don't amount to anything and that KRod will be our closer on Opening Day. Gotta give him some credit for covering his proverbial bases I guess.

Monday it was reported the trade talks were back on.

And that was when he posted about Brewers wanting to get Papelbon deal done.

Just to be clear, Tom didn't tweet the part about a second move. At least not from any of his recent tweets that I've seen.

So he didn't tweet this?

TH's tweet from 6:38 a.m. yesterday (1/28):

"I get impression #Brewers would like to find way to do problematic Papelbon trade. If that fails, fall-back position likely is K-Rod."

My vibe is that if they were set on K-Rod, the deal would've already been done. Melvin's exercising nice patience yet again, in this case w/ Phillly, and I really hope it bears fruit. For all the yelping around this board over the past couple months about Melvin doing nothing, I far prefer later moves that are prudent yet wise vs. early splashy ones that sometimes quickly reek of hasty, impulsive decisions and/or questionable judgement.

Nope. Only the 1st line is from TH's tweet. I believe the 2nd line simply is brewmann04's opinion.

I agree if they wanted KRod, he would already be a Brewer.

I really believe the trade for Papelbon will be completed.

Crazy how we can see things differently. I think they're acting interested in Papelbon in hopes of getting KRod to lower his price.

Krod is a Boras client. I wouldn't read anything into a deal not being done. If Melvin is obsessed with having "a proven closer" or some such thing, I hope he waits till into Spring training. What he should do is just go with the players he has.

I don't hate the move, but I would have preferred Thatcher. I just hope they are not done and will still sign K-Rod, Soriano, or Joba or get Papelbon.

Has the be another move coming... Closer type move.

Mark A did say he would be shocked if Brewers didn't make one more move... I'm really hoping this isn't the move.

Get Papelbon.

hmmmm, our new lefty is actually a roogie

From MLBTRADERUMORS comment on the signing... "Cotts is also something of a reverse-splits pitcher (left-handed batters have a career .753 OPS against him, while righty batters have only a .703 OPS) so he doesn’t fit the usual mold of a lefty specialist."

When I looked up the 2014 splits there it is... .680 OPS vs righties and .775 vs lefties

his really good 2013 was .436 vs righties and .565 vs lefties

I wonder if RR and Doug know that?

"Well he's a guy that isn't just limited to facing lefties -- he can get righties out too."
