2015 Brewer Organizational Rankings

reillymcshane

If you have subscribed to the "On Demand" portion of Sirius/XM radio, you can locate and listen to MLB Network Radio's "Minors & Majors" broadcast from Super Bowl Sunday AM.

Fittingly, Grant Paulsen's guests included Keith Law, but more importantly here, OF Monte Harrison.

Harrison discussed his passion for baseball, how playing every day in Maryvale is helping quickly develop his game, and how he was impressed by the skills of those in pro ball.

When asked to give a broadcaster's description of himself, he did feel as though he was a five-tool player, and while he mentioned that his favorite player is Andrew McCutchen, he feels his game most resembles that of Adam Jones.

Yes, Monte, that will do nicely, Brewer fans will take that, thank you!

The Brewers have done a good job at adding depth to their organization over the last two years. But they still lack the star power. They don't anyone who profiles as a #1 right now, and maybe not even a #2. And they don't have the Prince Fielder/Ryan Braun type prospect that profiles as an all-star player. They have a lot of major league potential to major league regular prospects and a lot of back end of the rotation players. I think that in order to make a significant jump in the rankings they not only need to the young guy to continue to progress but they need more high ceiling guys. I like what they did last year with Medeiros/Gatewood/Harrison. Hopefully that can pull of a similar coup next June.

Ben Badler of Baseball America lists Orlando Arcia and Tyrone Taylor as the #26 and #31 prospects in baseball in his personal rankings published in the recently released BA Prospect Handbook. It is the highest I have seen either ranked by a national baseball writer to this point.

Who are the top pitching and hitting prospects at each level for the crew.

We could speculate on that but it really depends on where everyone is placed to start the season though I will say that there really won't be a true hitting prospect in AAA, our best prospects will be in AA or lower.

I'll try, but I'm just guessing on what club each person is assigned to:

AAA

Pitcher: Jungmann (starter) and Knebel (reliever)

Hitter: Wren or Rogers - Both options are rather sad as your 'top' hitting prospect at AAA. Both can potentially contribute at the major league level, but they appear to be strictly role players.

AA

Pitcher: Lopez and Wagner

Hitter: Arcia and Taylor

A+

Pitcher: Taylor Williams or Wang (although either could end up at AA)

Hitter: Coulter

A-

Pitcher: Devin Williams

Hitter: Brandon Diaz, Tucker Neuhaus or Sthervin Matos

Rookie Helana

Pitcher: Medeiros

Hitter: Harrison (although I wonder if Milwaukee is aggressive and moves Harrison to A ball)

Rookie Maryvale and DSL teams

Pitcher: Diplan

Hitter: Lara

What's nice about the presentation of that list is that you can click the "LINK" and get either the player card or the team's top 10 where you can click on the player's link and get his "card." At the top of some is a drop down menu with scouting reports.

Looking through the list:

Dalton Pompey at 42 and the scouting report from last July sees him as a 4th OF?

Cards' Reyes P in A ball at 55 seems to be purely projection

Brandon Nimmo, OF, at 69, don't get it

Amed Rosario, SS, at 78 in high A looks like if everything breaks right he still won't be Orlando Arcia

Kyle Crick at 88? Lawdy

It's interesting that they have Miguel Diaz as the Brewers #10 prospect. I don't know much about him. Jorge Lopez is a reliever because his 3rd pitch didn't look good yet the list has lots of 2 pitch pitchers who are rated based on the expectation that they will develop one.

This was a remark about Coulter in the comments: He's not an aesthetically pleasing player, so it's tough to find ardent support from the pro scouting ranks.

If Arcia hits 10 HRs or more through the 2015 minors he'll jump in to a top 40 conversation prospect. That really is his only knock power/hitting. The Defense is rated as being ML ready and capable. These other SS prospects ahead of him are either a little more defensive specialists(think Andrelton Simmons), Faster, and possess Power.

I just think it's funny that Arcia is ranked lower in hit tool when he can go both ways, doesn't K a bunch like other SS prospects which means he'll put the ball in play giving himself the chance to bat .280+. Plus Arcia had over 40BBs last season, near 8%. Not like some guys ranked ahead of him(Mondesi & Anderson) Plus, I don't get ranking guys like Michael Conforto and Sean Newcombe ahead of Arcia two prospects picked in last years draft that weren't top 5 picks.

Anyway, its nice to see a guy like Arcia get recognized in the top 100 list. He's an obvious future ML contributor unlike many others ranked near him or ahead of him will turn out.

It's like a poster said -- the Team doesn't have that wow factor prospect, so they shouldn't be in the top half of ranking anyway. I think they do have a lot of ML future contributors to pull from, more so than likely a number of teams ahead of them in rankings its just they don't posses that guy who's going to be 5+WAR potential. A bunch of 1-3WAR guys but not 5+. Yet. Lara, Harrison, Gatewood, Arcia, and maybe even Coulter, could show enough to give some of that potential. The great news is the team is improving, and it's not just improving due to other team's graduating their talent.

Love the work our own Brad Krause and others do at Miller Park Propsects - here's their Top 40 Brewers.

This is such great content, and IMO the most complete and accurate of any Brewers prospect rankings list that I have come across.

Coulter makes a lot of sense as a 'sleeper' in that sense. If his transition to the OF goes well and he mashes again like he did last year he 'suddenly' looks like a big time bat. His slash line from last year was one of the better ones in the minors. He could easily end up with more All-star appearances than the guys currently ahead of him on the Brewers top 10 just based on the fact he is a legitimate hitter in the current offensive era.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Brewers criteria for bumping him to double AA mostly involves transitioning defensively, while showing just enough offense given their park factor. Which is to say if he picks up the OF quickly I could see him getting bumped up by midseason as long as he was taking quality ABs and still had an OPS in the .800's

In that video, he dominated two very high draft picks, Nick Gordon and Michale Gettys. Gordon was the top prep hitter in the draft.

You also saw how the catcher was having trouble sticking Kodi's offerings. If Medeiros can throw strikes, he will naturally induce a ton of weak contact AND rack up K's. That is the ticket when talking about pitching. If his stuff plays up for 6-7 innings, no doubt he is a SP long term.

Fantastic pick by Seid. The fact we got Harrison and Gatewood too amazes me.

In that particular game the catchers were having trouble all day long with this. Rawlings, the presenting sponsor for the event, had given all of the players brand new Rawlings gloves. Certainly a nice gesture (and to make sure their competitors equipment wasn't represented on the field), but watching those kids try to catch advanced pitches with brand new catchers gloves was a tough sight at times.

That makes sense because I could not believe how terrible that catcher was. I hope none of those kids' stock dropped after that boondoggle.
