Strasburg/Gallardo

ImScafering
The Nats re-signed Strasburg for 7.4million, however Melvin decided to pick up the team option on Gallardo for whopping 13million back in September. I know Strasburg prob got a hometown discount, but really? There's no way Gallardo should be getting paid twice as much as Strasburg even if Strasburg got a hometown discount. The more i see things unfold this off-season the more I keep telling myself that this might be the final year for Melvin/Roenicke. Im a huge Crew fan but i unfortunatley predict the Crew finishing last with Melvin/Roenicke getting fired and waiting another 5yrs before we regain contention status. Any thoughts or contradictions?

In other words, Strasburg was not free to sign with any other team. Generally speaking his salary was almost set before he signed the contract, by the arbitration system. Gallardo got 5.5 in his second year but he is well past that point in his career so if he were a FA he would be able to sign with any team he wanted, thereby driving his price up in terms of dollars and years. $13mil for a 1-year commitment on Gallardo was an easy decision. In the FA market he would most likely be looking for 4yrs 50-60mil.

Usually, teams control players for 6 years (once they are in the majors). The Nationals still control SS. I believe this is what is his 2nd "arb year" or the second last before he can play for whoever he wants for as much as he can get.

Because Gallardo signed an extension while he was still under control I can't make a direct comparison, but I think he got 5.5 million in a roughly equivalent year.

I'm sure others can explain it much better, but its an apples to oranges comparison.

Gallardo's salary is the going rate for a quality durable veteran #3 starter which is what he is. If he doesn't get dealt, I'm sure he'll get a QO from the Brewers after the season too.

That's what a lot of people seem to be forgetting. League average type starting pitching has gotten to be worth $10-15 million per year. This is 2015, not 2005. The Brewers aren't broke or a bottom barrel team, either.

Don't forget Strasburg's Arby numbers come up 1 year less of performance due to TJ whereas Gallardo has been 180+IP since day 1. This kind of gives the idea why you don't sign a player long term after 1 or 2 years(Segura) because 1 year removed due to injury destroys that natural ladder movement in pay. You also gotta remember this is year 8 for Gallardo which would be FA year #2, maybe #1. Strasburg will be in the 20+mil payday when that year arrives.

This reminds me of the comments when Mike Trout signed last year for 1 year and 1M.

Although just off the top of my head, doesn't 7.4M seem pretty cheap for 2nd year arby cost for a player the caliber of Strasburg?

It does seem cheap, but I think Strasburg just hasn't put up all that many innings with his injury and innings limits. Last year was the first time he threw over 200 and he only has 649.1 on his 4+ year career. Last year David Price settled for 14 million with about 50 days more service time, but 973 innings pitched. Two other comparables i found using the MLBTR arby tracker was Porcello's 8.2M last year and Fister's 7.2M last year. Both had well over 800 innings.

Getting paid in arbitration is more about racking up big amounts of counting stats, than being really good in a shorter amount of time. It might not be a totally fair system, and I'm sure the arbiters have some different ideas about how to gauge player value than most of us, but I can't really think of a better way to do it.

Also bumping this thread because it's hilarious.
