Sickels on Diamondbacks' Top 20 (Haniger, Banda)

Mass Haas

First from the August 31st Link Report --

Season-ending LHP Anthony Banda, Diamondbacks update --

Here's Anthony Banda's 6th start with the D'Backs Midwest League South Bend club (Friday). Five innings, one earned run for the win.

That's 34 K's and just seven walks over 35 innings in those six starts since the trade. Combined with his Timber Rattlers work prior, Banda has allowed just six earned runs in his last 50 innings (1.08 ERA). The southpaw turned 21 recently.

FYI: Through Sunday, OF Mitch Haniger has posted a .912 OPS in seven games with AA Mobile.

I do not blame the Brewers for acquiring OF Gerardo Parra - certainly if Carlos Gomez is going to be out any length of time, we can see the value there. I do blame Logan Schafer's abject 2014 failure, if he had performed at all at the big league level, both Haniger and Banda would still be Brewers.

Both Haniger and Banda will see postseason action with their teams, potentially against their old Brewers teammates in league finals. That would be fun.

John Sickels has posted his top 20 for the Diamondbacks - he lists Banda under the "other" category, although the only LHP's in the Top 20 are rookie baller Cody Reed and recently-acquired Robbie Ray.

16) Mitch Haniger, OF, Grade C+: Age 24, acquired in trade with Brewers over the summer, hit .259/.324/.422 with 11 homers, in 282 at-bats, all but 15 in Double-A. Average tools across the board, has some power but hasn’t lived up to full expectations generated when he was a supplemental first round pick in 2012. Decent glove could make him a workable fourth outfielder.

Here's what Gord Ash said in this Adam McCalvy December 11th article.

"We have great opportunity in the bullpen, and we have great opportunity in the outfield, so I would expect to hear quite a bit from a lot of players who have been reluctant to this point. I think they look at our outfield situation with four outfielders Ryan Braun, center fielder Carlos Gomez, left fielder Khris Davis and Gold Glove Award-caliber extra Gerardo Parra], but we have nothing after that. So there's a great opportunity if there's injury or non-performance."

Wonder what Logan Schafer (or his agent) thought as they read that...

It really pains me that considering the Brewers picked up Parra's entire salary, and that he will not be a cheap 4th OF option, that Banda had to be included in this deal. I believe Ron Roenicke will feed Parra too many starts, in particular for Khris Davis.

Banda will be 21 for most of his High-A season, and it will be interesting to follow his California League numbers this season. We won't post start-by-start updates (although tempted), but we will set up a more reasonable-to-manage alumni thread this spring, which will focus on younger players recently traded by the Brewers (Haniger, Banda, Barrett Astin, Kevin Shackelford, Shawn Zarraga, Zach Quintana, Rodolfo Fernandez) that will provide easy links for folks to check in or comment on at their convenience.

I'll also predict Banda is more than a lottery ticket for the D-Backs, and will surpass Haniger by quite a bit in future value. Darn you, Logan...

Besides Logan not getting hits in his odd at bats, there is the strong belief that competitive teams must buy at the deadline. Even though he made two moves, there were still callers on talk radio who said he did nothing.

Prices seem like they are about 3 times higher then than the offseason, although last deadline there were a few that seemed cheap like Cherington moving Lester.

This was my post in the reaction thread when it happened. I am disappointed still at the price we paid for parra. I think Banda is going to be a stud and hes got a real shot to be in a big league rotation.

I thought at the time that the addition may push us to the playoffs, but it didnt :-(, but it was also on the hope that 1 or both of henderson and thornburg were coming back.

I really like how he fits as a 4th outfielder for this team. I really dont like the price the brewers paid for him.

I think Haniger is being really undervalued here... The kid would have been pushing for time in milwaukee next season, thats a big loss. All I can think is that DM and co think that Taylor will be ready at the time that gomez gets traded, thats a tight timeline. Haniger showed to power to play one of the corners too, but braun and davis are both under control for the foreseeable future. Given that it makes sense to move him but I think the return was low.

On top of that Banda was added, further lopsiding this. He was developing into a REALLY nice player. In his third year out of CC he has moved up a level every year and gotten BETTER at the more advanced level every year, his career arch suggests that he will make a nice pitcher at the MLB level, or he could flame out as is the risk with every minor leaguer. He pitched 40ips then 60 then 80 up a level each time and has given up 40 runs over each level, thats incredible progression. his K to walk ratio got better each year, K to innings pitched, hits to innings pitched, HRs to innings pitched, WHIP has gone down, everything has gotten better with this kid as he's advanced and hes left handed. He is 20, throws 93, and is 2 years younger than the average player in his league. He alone probably could have brought back Parra seeing as how the Dbacks tried drafting him out of highschool and then the gaurenteed him they would take him in the 8-10th round range the next year and the brewers stole him.

Price was way to high, but this trade really helps the brewers, probably get them to the playoffs.
