Montgomery Brings in Former Cubs Regional Scouting Supervisor

In what appears to be the first major scouting department staffing move of the Ray Montgomery era, the Brewers have named Cubs' longtime Midwest Regional Supervisor Steve Riha as a National Crosschecker.

We had read recently that Montgomery plans to re-organize in terms of titles, so the actual "National Crosschecker" wording may be tweaked soon.

But as you can see from the Brewers' site front office breakdown (Amateur Scouting section), Riha is placed above crosscheckers Doug Reynolds and Corey Rodriguez and alongside Joe Ferrone, all pretty highly-regarded, but definitely a high position for a newcomer to the organization.

Riha, who has been based in Houston, was with the Cubs since 1997, and in his Midwest Regional Supervisor position since December 2005.

There isn't much online specific to Riha, it appears he was heavily involved in the drafting of RHP Andrew Cashner (1st round, 2008) - linked article - and D.J. LeMahieu (2nd round, 2009).

Good luck to Riha with the Brewers.
