Everth Cabrera

Would really love to see the Brewers bring this guy in. His speed would definitely play at SS and his glove won't hurt the team. It also would allow the Brewers to employ a rotation for Segura in the middle infield by keeping him in the lineup with Cabrera by playing Segura at 2B as the RH platoon with Scooter.

Cabrera could be a solid pick up if he can be had for 2yrs/$5M. I think he fills a couple needs for the Brewers.

1. Platoon mate for Scooter (Or allows Segura to play 2B).

2. Provides insurance at SS if Segura fails to progress towards his early 2013 form.

Adding Cabrera and Kyle Blanks would make me one very happy fan.

I just wonder if Cabrera's performance was really a result of PEDs and so SD came to the conclusion the need to dump him. Also, they are aggressively attempting to trade Grandal another PED suspended player. (I feel like there was another Padre on the biogenesis list can't think of currently)

Anyway, Makes sense for Milw to sign him to be a Backup, But again, like Medlen/Beachy he's gotta be looking for an every day spot first. Toronto king of Scrapheap pickups, wouldn't giving Cabrera a shot at every day 2b make sense? The Yankees need a Jeter replacement no? How could EC ignore that opportunity for an everyday job?

Again, I'd love to see him signed given a backup shot, I just believe a player of his caliber and potential will find an everyday job that Milw likely doesn't stand to offer. Im still really shocked the Padres didn't tender him a contract. He couldn't have been any more than 5mil in Arb? Does San Diego really need to save 1-3mil on what Cabrera offers? Couldn't they have tendered him a contract and just trade him this month? Get something for him? Let's say Milw would have wanted him from SD to be a backup. Couldn't they have gotten a Kyle Wren or Michael Reed for him? If not better from another team?

It wasn't just the PED suspension. He also got a DUI. Maybe the Padres simply do not want to be associated with players caught using PEDs. Also Cabrera was only projected to earn $2.9M in arbitration next season. I think if the Brewers offer him a 2 year deal and regular playing time (i.e. starting at 2B against LHP and at SS against tough RHP) he could be interested. Cabrera should easily get 450 PA.

I'd really like to see us take a page out of the A's book and sign Cabrera as a reclamation project. He does still have a couple years of team control, and he has experience hitting leadoff (stolen base whiz). We pretty desperately need a leadoff hitter IMO, as well as a versatile player in the infield.... make Segura earn his job next spring.

I think cabrera will wind up someone's starting shortstop. And I think it will be for more money than you guys are suggesting. I suspect he will sign an incentive laden one year deal somewhere that lets him run a lot, and try to rebuild his value so he can go for a big deal next year.

I agree with pogokat. As bad as his 2014 was, Cabrera was an All Star in 2013. Somebody will see how Starlin Castro rebounded in 2014 and think Cabrera is worth a shot to start. Besides the Brewers already have one starting shortstop coming off a disappointing season. They don't need two.

As for earning a job in spring as superfly suggests, we all know how unreliable Arizona spring training stats are at predicting performance for the regular season.

Let's see. Toronto just saved some salary space sending Happ and acquiring Saunders. Wonder just how much they'll offer EC to play 2b for them while backing up the oft-injured Reyes?

I just believe a team can offer a starting job(Justin Smoak) and that's going to be the defining equation. Maybe his agent can talk him in to the fact that playing 2b/SS everyday switching as the Platoon deems will add value if say, Defensive Metrics show him to be exceptional at 2b with a Bat that in the current state of MLB for a 2b is more suitable to increase $$$. SSs are growing on trees it's going to be hard not having a very solid SS in 2 years time across MLB.

He's still out there and unsigned. I realize we just got Sardinas, but maybe we keep him down in AAA to start and sign Cabrera to back up SS & 2B?

Cabrera's court date has been pushed back to March 23rd. Not sure he signs until after this is all cleared up. No team will sign him to a major league deal with the possibility of him spending the entire season in jail.
