Corey Hart

Is the time to buy low on Corey Hart and bring him home? Or are the knees just too far gone to make an impact anymore? He could fill our role as the RH 1B we need and fill in as our 5th OF behind Parra, plus be a pinch hitter/DH. He is a career .290avg/.362obp/.504slg for a .866ops against LHP's. Obviously it would have to be very cheap but I cannot see a bunch of teams knocking on his door throwing big money at him with last year's debacle in SEA.

I always try to find some sort of comparisons. Hart is unique as he was an all star, sat out a year and then followed that with a complete clunker. The Twins gave Jim Thome a $1.5 million contract in 2010 after putting up a .249 / .366 / .481 / .847 and 23 HR's in 2009. Most thought he was in decline. So based on that I would say Corey Hart will be looking at $1 million for his services for next year after his .203 / .271 / .319 / .590 in 2014. (as most probably view Hart as in decline)

I'm going to think Hart sign another deal like last year's. Incentive laden. It'll be a Minor League contract that he can opt out of if he doesn't make a team's Starting day roster. Then he'll settle for the 1mil contract. But that other deal would be something minor League, makes the opening day roster is 1mil/ but has 2-5mil built in with incentives escalating with PAs/HRs.

Agent wouldn't be getting him the best deal just to sign to play for 1 or even 1.5mil next season. may as well sign overseas for money like that if not more.

Just like Gabby Sanchez he might provide a platoon option but would really just clog up a roster spot. Any thoughts of putting him in the outfield pretty much need to be squashed. You might as well put Lucroy or Lind out there. If he's willing to take a minor league deal and play in Colorado Springs until there's any injury, then fine, otherwise no thanks.

I like Corey and appreciate what he did for Milwaukee, but I don't want him at this stage of his career - or the Brewers.

I'm not saying Corey won't get a job somewhere, but he's limited. He had a .590 OPS. He only played 11 games in the field because of his bad knees. He's an aging player and a bad hitter and a bad fielder at this stage. Plus a poor runner. DH is the only real spot that he is viable at right now.

The Brewers expect to contend for the playoffs next year. We're better off with a guy like Rogers who is young, healthy, cheap and versatile (able to play 3B as well as 1B) instead of a fading veteran who looks washed up. To hope that Corey can regain his hitting prowess at age 33 is asking a lot. Especially with the injuries he has endured.

Hart needs to find an AL team who needs a DH. It'll be a minor league deal. He'd have to go to camp and prove his knees are better, but if they are, he could potentially land a gig. Ideally he could land with a team like Tampa or KC - both lower budget teams looking for potential bargains. They could let him compete for the job in spring training. If he stinks, no harm. A team like Houston could work as well. They could hope Hart does well, then flip him to a contending team later in the year.

Unless he can really show his knees are better, I think it'll be hard for Corey to make it with any NL team.

That all said, there is a lack of right handed power in the league. Someone will likely give Corey a try. Tampa DHs hit for a .703 OPS last year. A guy like Hart might work out well for them.

I don't think it would hurt to bring him in on a minor league deal and see what he has in Arizona. I like him more than Gabby Sanchez. That said, they have internal options. Not just Rogers but Jimenez who's on the 40 man, and Sean Halton too.

This is something I always seem to forget. We do have options at the right hand side of the plate. Jiminez will probably get the first crack at it if he has a pulse coming out of spring training. I do like Rogers bat as well. And we know Halton can hit lefties, but he is horrendous in the OF so he's 1B only to me.

The problem will be that he will make the team, because he is a gritty veteran. I don't want any reason for RR to tell DM that he has to be on the roster.
