SS Sean Rodriguez

Brewer Fanatic Contributor

The Rays designated IF Sean Rodriguez today. He'll be 30 next year.

Is arby eligible for a 3rd time this year. Probably inline to make $2M.

Doesn't hit for a high average (.221 BA from 2012-14), but has some pop (12 HR on 237 ABs last year). Generally grades out average or a bit above average as defender (plays SS, 2B, 3B - even some OF), although last year wasn't great.

A right handed hitter, career-wise, he has a .746 OPS vs left handed pitching - .611 vs righties. He could platoon at 2B with Scooter if necessary, has a decent glove, and a lot of experience (1600 career ABs).

$2 million is a lot for a backup like this, but he would provide veteran depth if Segura falters again, a platoon partner for Scooter (if necessary), and versatility - he can play all the IF positions as well as LF/RF (not that you want him there).

Just an option.

He's a viable option. This guy had pretty good power numbers in the minor leagues. He slugged a very respectable .443 in 2014. That makes him not only a platoon candidate but a decent fall back at 3B if as I suspect Ramirez slides further. I'm certainly not sold on Hector Gomez who right now is the guy he'd have to beat out or Herrera who's a better hitter from the left side.

Last year we got burned by bad depth in the outfield and infield. Parra is around next year to handle 4th OF slot. A middle IF would be nice next year. If at all possible, I don't want guys like Falu and Bianchi and Herrera playing.

And a little insurance regarding Segura would be nice. If he struggles, we need someone who can step in and do the job. A guy like Rodriguez would fit the bill.

I'm more worried about Ramirez than Segura myself. They have Rogers and Jimenez as options there, but neither of those two play short, and while they've they had minor league success, so have guys like Bianchi so you never really know. Pitching has become so dominant that finding hitters isn't easy.

It's safe to say we are all worried about ARam and Segura. ARam because he's old, seems to be easily injured, and really fell off last season. Segura because other than a hot start to half a season, he's really sucked and had a personal tragedy that can really take a toll on shaping your mindset on life.

"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

Well, we can erase this thought. Is Gaby worth a look at the right side of the plate? Career .291avg/.382obp/.863 ops against LHP's. The only issue is that he seems to strictly be a 1B which doesn't help our flexibility with the roster. Similar to having Weeks/Gennett last sweason.

The Pirates announced that they have acquired infielder Sean Rodriguez from the Rays in exchange for a player to be named later and cash considerations. First baseman Gaby Sanchez has been designated for assignment to clear roster space.
