Joel Sherman - Sign Scherzer

I guess the bottom line is the fact our pitching staff was good enough to do special things last season. The pathetic bats are what doomed us, as well as stressed the pitchers out towards the last couple months because they felt they needed to throw a shutout for us to win.

Our 10th in the NL, by ERA,(6th by runs) pitching was special but our 6th in the NL offense, by runs, doomed us? I don't buy it.

I don't think people are down on our prospects as much as last year but the good ones we have are more than a year or two away by which time we will have lost a good chunk of our current MLB talent. Yeah Gennett and Davis are nice but they are not stars. They are solid MLB contributors. Unfortunately ours stars have fallen a bit. I don't think signing a guy like Scherzer will help enough to make the signing worth while. It also has the potential to be franchise crippling.

Fan is short for fanatic.

I blame Wang.

I live in Wild-land and while hockey is moderately different, a lot of national nerdy pundits thought that it was a Milwaukee Bucks-esque move. Capped out at the 5th-8th seed and no high draft picks to restock. Not apples to apples but it seems to be true so far. It's a little different than the NBA because they supposedly had some reasonable prospects in the pipeline but I think people are going to grow tired of the mediocrity soon.

That said, again, hockey is different. It's not impossible to win the playoffs coming from the 7 or 8 seed (barring being the 7 seed because Durant was out for 2 months) like it is in the NBA.

The media is as much of a factor in stardom as performance. Maybe you guys are right and adding sizzle will be a winning strategy for the variety of reasons cited. From a strict winning and losing, pitching and hitting point, i don't think many of the big FA contracts are that positive.

I'm not sure they're all that great even in the front end years. It seems like the thing to do when your alternative is flat out bad. When the alternative is guys like Fiers, the idea of paying someone 50 times his salary and then guaranteeing it for 6 years seems somewhere between ludicrous and insane to me. I suppose there is no sizzle factor and that's a powerful thing.

Ditto for a guy like Hanley with his medical file that might be bigger than mine. (Hint: I like watching Turner Classic Movies and I've used a rotary phone). If Vegas had a prop bet on over/under the number of games he averages per season of his new contract and set it at, let's say 115, who takes the over?

I'd be really surprised if Melvin doesn't do something. His "we're ready" comment or whatever it was is his usual poker talk.
