2015 Brewers' 1st-Rd. Pick Speculation

Community Moderator
Is there going to be a new live thread for the draft itself?

Last year we used the Draft Pick Discussion threads that are pinned to the top of the page for "In-Draft Discussion". Assume the same again this year?

Also, couldn't agree more on Harold Reynolds, he is going to make every player sound like they will be ready for big league action by this year's trade deadline.

It's all marketing baby, that's why the scouting reports from mlb.com have typically been on the side of "the absolute best case"... MLB has a vested interest in making every fan love their draft picks, which is why I haven't historically used MLB for much prospect wise.

I guess a good rule of thumb is if they DON'T compare your draft pick to a former Hall of Famer then they think you made a bad pick.

Not just “at Night” anymore.

My way too early look things - the Brewers' first pick will come from this list...

Chris Betts, Catcher, Wilson HS, CA

Ian Happ, 2B/CF, Cincinnati

Alonzo Jones, 2B/CF, Columbus HS, GA

Mike Nikorak, RHP, Stroudsburg HS (PA)

Nick Plummer, LF, Brother Rice HS (MI)

Rats. I stink.

Um....I typed, "Trenton Clark", and it autocorrected to Alonzo Jones....very peculiar.

X is the only one with an uncanny knack for calling Brewer picks, the rest of us are just scrubs.

Well, no-ones posted anything in here for 2 months now. New Prospect Lists have been put out including MLB's for 2015. They need to complete the individual team list, but do have a draft 50 list. Here's the link for right now to get to it:

http://www.mlb.com/mlb/prospects/watch/y2015/#list=draft

Can at least read up on some prospects and see a little video too.

15: Trenton Clark HS OF

16: Ian Happ Cincy College OF

17: Phil Bickford CC of S.Nevada Col RHSP

18: Mike Nikorak HS RHSP

Are the around names to where Milw picks. Can use the list as you want. Last season MLB had Gatewood 22, Harrison 23, and Medeiros 29th. Will have to look up the money and picks involved to see what kind of draft strategy the team could make.

Nailed it.

Between signed players, and those who have stated they'll enroll in college, we're at 20 players now, halfway through the list.

Keep in mind, players who are participating in the College World Series can't sign until they're done.

They've announced they aren't signing....right now. Doesn't mean things can't change over the summer. It's unlikely but you never know. They have right up to the deadline to make it happen. People can always change their mind.

That said, I'm not holding my breathe - which is what all of us knew when we drafted virtually all those guys.

Just a reminder that the signing deadline is no longer in August, it's now in July.

I have no idea why but I feel like we will sign at least one guy considered "unsignable" or a "long-shot." Part of me thinks that Ray has something up his sleeve for drafting all of these guys.

But I know the more logical conclusion is, "hey, what the hell, why not?"

Being able to do that depends largely on how much of the original bonus pool money is left, I don't think there's anyway we get one of them for $400K.

I gotta believe both the 14th and 18th round picks will eat into that available pool as well, HS players singing after the 10th round are typically overslot, I would say always as I don't remember anyone not being so, but it's probably happened for one of the teams.

Here's a dumb question. I've seen some articles/posts/press releases in the past that have said the Brewers offered $X for college, and the way I read that it is on top of their signing bonus. What are the rules around offering kids money for college in conjunction with their signing bonus? I'm sure there has to be a limit on it, but I thought I read once that the Brewers gave someone recently $240K for college with their signing (might have been one of the first three picks last year).

That's not part of the bonus, that's part of the agreement, it's more of a "if/then" type of thing. "If" the player doesn't reach MLB "then" they get money for college. I actually think money for college should be a standard part of every HS contract, maybe not a full ride, but something to fall back on...

The draft has gotten much better, or at least the rules have allowed the Brewers to compete better (since they didn't go over slot and were all about signability prior), but it's still a horribly flawed system. The whole "senior sign" thing is so ridiculous, you would think MLB would be able to do better with the draft, the minors, and international signings but baseball is just so slow to change.

That's what I meant. Like maybe Ray has some Jedi mind trick and has underslot deals in place with lots of guys, maybe he sold them on the "good of the organization" or something. He has enough to get someone for 1 million and one of them will jump on it.

Yeah, would be nice if they had a minimum slot value and something around declaring for the draft or having to go pro if you are offered a certain minimum signing bonus.

Unfortunately it's a game with a lot of tradition and thus will not make a lot of changes in a short period of time. But think about where the game was as recently as 10 years ago and where it is now - PED testing/policy, draft bonus pool, compensation for unsigned draft picks, competitive balance rounds, qualifying offers for free agents, replay... the game has probably made more changes in the last 10 years than the previous 100 combined.
