Bud Selig to tour Miller Park (Latest: Brewers to retire #1 to honor him)

I won't be at the game tonight, but hope that at some point they show Bud on the big screen and he gets a standing ovation.

Say what you want about Bud Selig when he owned the Brewers and the work he's done as commissioner, but the fact is that he brought baseball back to Milwaukee. I wasn't born until 1978, so I can't even imagine a world without the Brewers close to home. The Brewers, County Stadium, the fight for Miller Park, post-Selig having Miller Park, playoff races and post-season races, etc., have given me countless memories that I'll never forget. It would have never happened without Selig bringing the Brewers to Milwaukee. I don't usually post anything like this, but baseball has been a huge part of my life and without the Brewers that wouldn't have happened, so for that I'm thankful.

Thank you Bud.

I guess in my imaginary world I'll just assume Corey Hart's number is retired whenever I see it.

That's Del Crandall's number. It's about time he was honored. :)

That’s the only thing Chicago’s good for: to tell people where Wisconsin is.

Yeah, I'm not sure I get the whole retiring numbers thing for guys like Uecker and Selig. Put their names along side the other retired numbers, but not sure why there is a need to assign a random retired number to each of them.

Yeah, Uecker's sign says 50 (for years in baseball), but 50 is not retired.

I had the same idea as BSC: give Selig 70, for his bringing baseball back to MKE in 1970. That wouldn't displace a commonly used uniform number and would have a meaning similar to Uecker's 50. Unfortunately, I wasn't consulted, and now that they've had the presser and stuff, it's too late to change to 70 now.

I do suspect they chose 1 to signify his "#1" status in the Brewers' organization.

Remember: the Brewers never panic like you do.

Next year will be Bob's 60th year in baseball. I wonder if that warrants a new sign. :)

I'd rather not use a number at all, but given that I can't think of anything else, 70 sounds good and makes a lot of sense. I wouldn't be surprised if the team considered alternatives to using a number but couldn't think of anything either.

Milwaukee was so lucky to have Bud. He could have easily given up when the city was for all intents and purposes blackballed for fighting to keep the Braves and denied an expansion franchise. It's hard to imagine now but think about it. Milwaukee and Wisconsin fought to keep it's team. KC rolled over and let Finley take the A's to Oakland without a whimper. So baseball rewards them by almost immediately awarding them a franchise and the owners prevent Milwaukee from getting one as retribution. Bud went from consummate outsider in 1970, to power broker to eventually commissioner. To use one of Bud's favorite words, it was remarkable.

The Tigers retired EH (Ernie Harwell) and TC (Ty Cobb) and the Cardinals have retired JB (Jack Buck) and RH( (Rogers Hornsby). I can understand not wanting to hang a banner that says BS on it. Although I guess it should be AS but probably not a lot of people would know who that is.

Oh..I guess I should have realized that since Mike Fiers wears 50. I've never been good at remembering uniform numbers unless the player has been on the team for several years.

As was mentioned by Casey, seems like they are going to have to amend that sign for Uecker.

Ukes sign already is different than the rest of the them.

Personally I wouldn't retire a number for Selig or have a statue of him at the park. I sincerely think he's been one of the All-Time worst commissioners and while I'm very thankful that he brought Baseball back to Milwaukee that does not supersede him looking the other way during the steroid era and all the other countless distasteful things he presided over. But that's just me

Personally I think we all "looked the other way" during the steroid era, and not sure what you are referring to when you say "countless distasteful things"? Countless? Are you referring to the tied All-Star game?...it was an exhibition game. I'm a little more upset that he gave into all the uproar regarding that tie and decided to tie the home field advantage of the WS to it. Are you referring to the 1994 cancelled post season? Imho, there were two parties guilty in that situation..the players and the owners.

I understand, but I guess I still thought that meant that 50 was retired. Again, completely ignoring the fact that Fiers (and probably others in the 7 or 8 years prior to Fiers) were wearing 50.

Instead of #1 being retired they should just put a big "BUD" (including the quotation marks) on one of those baseballs of retired numbers.

You'd have to keep the quotation marks, though, to make sure it is disassociated from any Anheiser-Busch property.

That would make the most sense to me. Retiring #1 is just an excuse to retire a number if you ask me.
