Ryan Braun & His Thumb… Latest (11/26): Ryan tells media thumb is 100%

Baldkin

Since there seem to be lots of questions constantly popping up about this subject, I wanted to attempt to round them up into one post....

Regarding the possibility of surgery:

"The only two surgeries we knew of last year, neither of them were appealing," Braun said. "Look, I rely on the advice of people who are much more knowledgeable on this stuff that I am. The only two surgeries they described last year, one is I would never feel anything in my thumb again, because they would completely remove the nerve. That doesn't make sense just long-term, living life. The other one, there would be nerve endings, because they would remove the nerve but the nerve endings would still be there, which could be really painful, and [Dr. Don Sheridan, the specialist who examined Braun several times] said he didn't think that would be a great option, either.

"Then, when we saw him in the spring, there is a third option that he thinks could potentially work, but it's not something that's been done very often. Without getting into too many details, because I'm not an expert and I don't want to say something that's inaccurate, I know it hasn't been done a lot, but it's something that he thought might work."

And a great article on what he's going through:

Much of the Ryan Braun's past two seasons have been marred by a peculiar and recurring hand injury that has robbed him of much of his prodigious power. Typically described as a right thumb injury, it is an inflamed nerve in the 'webbing between his right thumb and index finger that runs up the base of the thumb' that is the actual source of Braun's issues. Secondary to this matter are the blisters in the area as a result to gripping the bat too tightly due to the injury causing numbness of the thumb.

he had an extended period to rest the thumb last year once his suspension started. After a week or two of spring training this year it recurred.

No surgical repair likely means he's dealing with this the rest of his career - based on the past two seasons it's something that makes him an inconsistent option offensively that can't be relied on to get through a season healthy and productive. It's not like he'll get a longer period of rest for the thumb than he got over his past offseason.

Maybe Duchovny's character's hand hyperbaric chamber in Zoolander will work...

Forget surgery. Sometimes the old ways are the best. Call upon Theodoric of York, medieval barber. Braun can get a haircut and a blood letting at the same time.

My fingers are crossed. Come on, doc, work that magic.

I'll believe it when I see it. Didn't he, essentially, say the same thing about his thumb feeling 100% last February? It didn't last long.

However, I can be optimistic, as well, and hope that it did, indeed, work and he will return to being a power bat that is worth the big contract.
