MLB Mock Draft 2015: Version 5.0

After last year’s high-risk draft, Milwaukee will go more conservative on the college tip. They’re tied closely to college righties such as Louisville’s Kyle Funkhouser and Cal Poly Pomona’s Cody Ponce. Funkhouser’s strong regional start may have saved his draft stock; he could use another strong outing this weekend against Cal State Fullerton and ace Thomas Eshelman, who continues to have draft helium. They had a good workout with SoCal prep catcher Chris Betts, but he may still be there for them at 40, their next selection.

Selection: Kyle Funkhouser, rhp, Louisville

I am not convinced Funkhouser is necessarily a low-risk play as seems to be insinuated here. He reportedly has command issues, his performance declined late in the season, he may have some sort of injury but isn't sharing his medicals with teams, and he is a Scott Boras client. Combine all that with the fact that the two biggest factors that derail the careers of talented young pitchers are injuries and command issues, and I think it could be argued that Funkhouser may very well be a risky selection.

Not just “at Night” anymore.

MLB Mock Draft 2015: Version 5.1

Milwaukee is tied to conservative college pitcher selections; the Brewers have been in on Cody Ponce of Division II Cal Poly Pomona and may go there if he’s available well below the slot. Louisville’s Kyle Funkhouser is perceived to have a higher ceiling and more durable body.

Truth be told I find the word "conservative" as irritating as the phrase "performed well in our workout", I don't have anything to add given my previous comments on Funkhouser.
