This may be the last time we link to Nashville's Media Notes, although we'll save our goodbyes and thanks for any subsequent PDC affilaition news to formally come out.

But to Doug Scopel and staff, and Jeff Hem, here's your preliminary thanks! May your next partner have a Link Report! (And who knows, maybe we'll still be partners in crime.)

From today's notes --

TEN GO WIRE-TO-WIRE WITH SOUNDS: Pitchers Michael Blazek, Donovan Hand, Kyle Heckathorn, Dustin Molleken, and Ariel Pena; infielders Hector Gomez, Pete Orr, and Eugenio Velez; and outfielders Sean Halton and Jeremy Hermida have each spent the entire 2014 season on the Nashville roster. Catcher Matt Pagnozzi would have qualified had he not been promoted today.

HELPING THE BIG CLUB: Not including rehab players, 12 different Sounds players also spent time with Milwaukee this season. Twenty-one of the current 31 players on the Brewers’ active roster have appeared for Nashville during their playing careers.

CLARK CRUSHING IT: First baseman Matt Clark has posted a .362 average (21-for-58) with six home runs, 13 RBIs, and nine multihit outings in his last 15 games. He led the Sounds during August with 12 home runs, 38 hits, 24 RBIs, 24 runs, and 15 multi-hit games. Clark’s 104 total bases since the All-Star break are 3rd-most in the PCL (Omaha’s Carlos Peguero leads with 107).

***

Jason Rogers and Matt Clark are conspicuously absent from Nashville's starting lineup today. Rogers' big-league debut this month is a given, and Clark (in need of a 40-man spot) makes for good theater today/tonight. What a free agent find Clark has been...

2009 Brewers draft pick Jacobbi McDaniel made the Browns' practice squad as an undrafted free agent out of Florida State. Back then, the Brewers drafted him as a 6'0", 280 pound third baseman (33rd round). Now he's a 6'0", 293 defensive/nose tackle.

Huge day for Coulter so far. Pitchers not so much.

I love it. I have Coulter as our top prospect by a fairly substantial margin. I think the reason he doesn't stick behind the plate is because his bat is going to be too good. If their patient, I still believe he has the tools to be a very good receiver.

Either way, a .285/.410/.500 line looks pretty damn good for our 21 year old '12 first rounder.

Farm system is going to look a LOT better going into next year IMO.

ROUND ROCK, Texas - Sean Halton, Jeremy Hermida, and Hunter Morris each homered to power the Nashville Sounds to a 13-6 victory over the Round Rock Express in their season finale on Monday afternoon at The Dell Diamond.

Nashville (77-67), which gained a split of the season-ending six-game series against Round Rock, finished the year with the 23rd winning campaign in the franchise's 37-year history. The Sounds spent 100 of the 152 days of the 2014 PCL season in first place.

The 13 runs scored were one shy of the Sounds' season-best effort. Hermida belted a grand slam to key a seven-run, eighth inning and Halton went 3-for-5 with a game-tying two-run shot earlier in the contest to pace the Nashville offense.

Round Rock grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first inning with a pair of doubles against Jay Jackson. Luis Sardinas (3-for-4) blooped a one-out double to shallow center and scored two batters later on Bryan Petersen's two-bagger off the base of the center field wall.

The Express doubled their lead to 2-0 in the third when Sardinas singled with two outs, stole second, and scored on a Drew Robinson RBI knock to right.

Halton (3-for-5) leveled the contest at 2-2 in the top of the fourth when he slugged his eighth home run of the year, a two-run shot to left off Express starter Jimmy Reyes. Hermida, who preceded Halton by legging out his 20th double of the year, also scored on the blast.

Halton finished the season on a tear, recording a hit in 21 of his final 28 games at a .327 clip (33-for-101). Round Rock loaded the bases against Jackson with two outs in the fifth but failed to score as the Nashville right-hander retired Petersen on an inning-ending flyout to keep it a tied game.

Nashville took its first lead in the sixth with a run against Express reliever Martire Garcia. After loading the bases with one out on a pair of walks sandwiched around a Halton single, Eugenio Velez scooted home from third with the go-ahead run on a wild pitch to give the visitors a 3-2 advantage.

After Hunter Morris walked to reload the bases, Irving Falu ripped an RBI infield single to third and Caleb Gindl followed with a sacrifice fly to center to up the lead to 5-2.

Jackson held the Express to two runs on seven hits over five innings of work and departed in line for his first victory with the Sounds, but the right-hander was left with a no-decision following a late Round Rock rally.

Round Rock designated hitter Cory Patton cut the Sounds' lead to one at 5-4 in the home half of the sixth with a two-out, two-run homer to center off Dustin Molleken, his first longball at the Triple-A level.

Petersen (2-for-4) powered the Express back into the lead an inning later, when he smashed a go-ahead, two-run homer to center off Molleken to give the home team a 6-5 advantage. It was the outfielder's 13th roundtripper of the season.

The Sounds took control of the game with a seven-run outburst against Ryan Feierabend in the eighth, sending 10 batters to the plate during the frame.

Halton led off with a double and Nashville loaded the bases when Hector Gomez drew a walk and Falu singled before Gindl was hit by a pitch to force home the tying run. Lucas May lifted a sacrifice fly to left to give the Sounds a 7-6 lead and Pete Orr plated an insurance run with an RBI single to left, which helped the veteran finish the season with a .301 average.

After Velez reached on an error to refill the bases, Hermida smashed a grand slam to right to make it a 12-6 Nashville lead. The big fly was his 16th of the year, tying Matt Clark for the team lead, and the Sounds' second slam of the season.

Morris closed out the afternoon's scoring in the ninth when he tattooed a one-out solo homer to right-center, his 11th tater of the year.

Baseball returns to Music City in April 2015 when the Sounds begin their 38th season of competition at the brand-new First Tennessee Park in North Nashville. Season tickets are available by calling 615-690-HITS or visiting the Greer Stadium box office.

If in fact this is the last hoorah with Nashville I'd like to pass along my sincere thanks for everything they've done over the years. When I first really started following the minors my nights were always Nashville/Helena, I'd start with Nashville and close with Helena on my way to bed. They were the first franchise to archive their audio for us, and I believe they were the first to offer daily media notes online. My interest in following the AAA team waned as it became barren of prospects over the last 5-6 seasons but that doesn't diminish the quality of the broadcasters they've had over the years including current voice of the Sounds Jeff Hem who's been fantastic. Speaking of Jeff, I listened to the game today hoping he'd drop a nugget on the possible affiliation switch but of course he didn't let anything slip (if he knows anything). At any rate, thanks again for all of the hard work over the years and best of luck with the new ballpark.

Arcenio Leon struck out the side in the 8th and a pitched a clean 9th, he had been struggling of late so that was a nice way for him to end his season.

I'll have a wrap up post for the 2014 Nashville Sounds either tomorrow or Wednesday depending on how things go which will have additional thoughts for every player.

Rattlers drop regular season finale 11-5 to Beloit

Coulter homers twice to tie franchise record

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

BELOIT, WI - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers lost 11-5 to the Beloit Snappers at Pohlman Field on Monday afternoon in the regular season finale for both teams. Clint Coulter homered twice for Wisconsin to match a franchise record for home runs in a season. The Timber Rattlers move on to the postseason in a series that starts Wednesday at home.

Coulter gave the Timber Rattlers (72-67 overall, 36-34 second half) a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. He drove the first pitch of his at bat against Joe Michaud over the wall in right-center for a solo homer.

Wisconsin tacked on a pair of unearned runs in the top of the second. A pair of errors and a stolen base put runners on second and third with one out. Jose Pena drove in the first run with a sacrifice fly. Steve Halcomb followed with an RBI single and the Rattlers were up 3-0.

Beloit (55-84, 25-44) struck back in the bottom of the second inning against Wisconsin starting pitcher Zach Quintana. Phil Pohl cracked a two-run home run with one out. Later in the inning, Josh Ludy hit a two-run home homer and the Snappers were up 4-3.

Omar Garcia doubled to start the Wisconsin half of the third inning to bring Coulter to the plate. The Wisconsin designated hitter cracked a line drive over the wall in left-center for a two-run homer to give the Rattlers a 5-4 lead.

Coulter's second home run was his 22nd of the season and tied the single-season home run record for the Timber Rattlers franchise. Khris Davis set the mark in 2010. Victor Roache matched the record with 22 home runs in 2013.

Beloit went back in front in the bottom of the third inning. Michael Soto hit a two-run home run against Wisconsin reliever Harvey Martin and the Snappers were up 6-5.

Ludy added to Beloit's lead in the fourth on an infield grounder that scored a run. BJ Boyd knocked in a run in the fourth with a two-out single.

Boyd made it 9-5 with a two-out single in the bottom of the sixth against Brandon Moore.

The Snappers tacked on their final two runs in the seventh inning as Luis Baez singled to drive in one run and Brandon Cogswell grounded into a 4-6-3 double play with the bases loaded and no outs.

Coulter, who was named the DH for the Midwest League's postseason All-Star Team last week, finished the day 3-for-5 to give him an average of .287. Coulter ended the regular season with an on base percentage of .408 and a slugging percentage of .505.

The Timber Rattlers begin the 2014 postseason with a first round best-of-three series against the Kane County Cougars. Game One is Wednesday night at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium. Clint Terry (3-5, 2.49) is the scheduled starting pitcher for Wisconsin. Kane County will counter with Jen-Ho Tseng (6-1, 2.40) as their starter. Game time is 6:35pm.

Game One will be a WIXX Bang for Your Buck Night with soda, hotdogs, and Miller Beer products available for $1.

Tickets for Game One are available online. Fans may also purchase tickets online or in person at the ballpark when the Timber Rattlers ticket office opens at 9am on Tuesday, September 2.

If you can't make it out to the ballpark, tune in for the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM or IHeartRadio starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 6:15pm. Wednesday's game will also be available to subscribers of MiLB.TV.

Wisconsin Boxscore

I'm unable to decide who I'm more disappointed in, Harvey Martin or Zach Quintana, they both have similar stuff on the mound, and both should be better than they are, but neither pitcher can consistently find the strike zone.

In early June I had reached the point where I figured Clint Coulter breaking the HR record was just a mere formality, then he went cold and I'm completely thrilled that a just turned 21 year old HS draftee is at least a co-holder of the record. When he went homerless over the weekend I had actually given up on him even tying it... just goes to show...

Coulter's (3-5,2 HR) day led the way with Paul Eshleman (2-3,2B), Angel Ortega (2-4), and Steven Halcomb (2-4) contributing multi-hit efforts of their own.

I'll have a wrap up post on the 2014 T-Rats here in the next couple of days.

Final: Mississippi 2, @Huntsville 1

Braves Edge Stars In Finale

Steve Jarnicki, Huntsville Stars

Huntsville, AL - The Mississippi Braves defeated the Huntsville Stars 2-1 Monday in the final game of the regular season at Joe Davis Stadium in Huntsville.

The Braves, who finished with the best overall record in the Southern League with at 83-56, did not qualify for the Southern League playoffs.

Entering Monday's game, the Braves trailed Jacksonville by one game in the second half standings. The Braves needed to win, which they did, but also needed Mobile to beat Jacksonville in order to qualify.

Jacksonville defeated Mobile 6-5 to clinch the second half of the Southern League South.

The Stars meanwhile, ended the regular season with a 77-63 record. Huntsville won the first half of the Southern League North and qualified for the postseason.

Huntsville took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Hainley Statia drove a solo home run over the right field wall. It was Statia's fifth home run of the season.

Mississippi tied the game in the top of the third against Huntsville starter Brent Suter. Kyle Kubutiz singled into center scoring Kyle Wren knotting the game at 1-1.

Suter, who took a no-decision, went six innings and allowed one run on six hits. He struck out two and walked one.

The Braves broke the 1-1 tie in the eighth inning against Stars reliever Kevin Shackelford (2-4).

With the bases loaded and one out, Seth Loman hit a grounder to the right side of infield, producing a fielder's choice RBI. Wren scored for the Braves putting them ahead 2-1.

Ryne Harper (9-5) earned the win out of the Mississippi bullpen after pitching two scoreless innings in the seventh and eighth.

John Cornely recorded his seventh save of the year in the ninth.

Statia led off the ninth with a single, but he would be caught stealing to end the game.

Statia led the Stars by going 2-4 with a home run.

The Stars will have Tuesday and Wednesday off before they host the Chattanooga Lookouts, the Double-A Affiliate of the Los Angeles Dodgers, Thursday in the first round of the playoffs. The game can be heard starting at 6:15 CDT on 92.9 FM, 1450 AM and wtkiradio.com.

Huntsville Box Score

Nice final regular season outing for LHP Brent Suter, who like RHP Drew Gagnon, was ready to go for 28 appearances.

He may be off to the AFL, but 1B Nick Ramirez' very tough second half continued with another golden sombrero, his 4th of the season (eight other games with three K's).

Final: Helena 3, Missoula 2

Uhen leads Brewers to 3-2 win

By Dustin Daniel / Helena Brewers

The Helena Brewers (13-22) collected a win in their series opener against the Missoula Osprey (17-18) on Monday at Kindrick Field by a score of 3-2.

The Brewers would take the first lead of the game with a run in the second. Alan Sharkey led off with a single and scored on an RBI double from Dionis Hinojosa. Hinojosa went 2-for-4 on the day.

The Osprey then temporarily took the lead when Gerard Hernandez hit a two-RBI double to score Maik Ehmcke and Henry Castillo.

Pitching was dominant for Helena to close the day. Josh Uhen (2-4) pitched a season-high seven innings, striking out three batters. J.B. Kole picked up his first professional save pitching the final two innings.

With a 2-2 tie going to the seventh, Edgardo Rivera picked up a leadoff single off Kevin Simmons (2-3). He scored two batters later when Gregory Munoz singled to left field.

The Brewers and Osprey will face off in the finale of their two-game series on Tuesday at Kindrick Field. It will be the final time the two teams face off this season. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.

Helena Box Score

Brandon Diaz went 1-for-2 and was hit by a pitch. Diaz also stole his 21st base this season in 30 attempts. Alan Sharkey went 2-for-4 in the game including his 12th double.

Maybe it's Huntsville Stars' last regular-season game, but management needs good PR gesture: opinion

Mark McCarter, Huntsville Times

The Huntsville Stars jogged from the field and into the dugout as the top of the ninth inning ended. One player tossed a baseball toward a gaggle of waiting gloves attached the arms of eager children.

"The last time they'll ever come off the field in a regular-season game," said one man in the grandstands.

"Maybe," said his neighbor.

"Yeah," came the agreement, "everything about the Stars is maybe right now."

How appropriate that the indescribably painful "Call Me Maybe" song has appeared on the stadium PA playlist.

Ostensibly, Monday afternoon brought the final regular season game in the 30-year history of the Stars. They have been been sold, with plans to move to Biloxi. However, the planned new stadium there won't be ready for opening day 2015.

Hence Ken Young, the Stars' new majority owner, is pondering having to start the year in Huntsville and plans to have a decision in the next two weeks.

Here's what Young should do:

When the Stars open the Southern League playoffs Thursday, he should make the announcement that the team will be in Huntsville from opening day through July 4, when it will move to Mississippi, or simply into a nomadic situation. Anybody with playoff tickets may redeem them for opening day 2015. And on July 4, the team is sent out with the mother of all fireworks shows.

He should then officially notify the city that the Stars will take advantage of the remaining year on the stadium lease and pay rent for the entire year.

It's not in the best interest for the future of baseball to have another lame-duck summer. It's time for this organization, left to decay by the apathy of previous majority owner Miles Prentice, to pack up and go.

But if a return is inevitable, a reward to the shrinking cadre of loyal fans and an end to the city's suspense would be a good PR move.

An announced crowd of 1,527 was at Joe Davis Stadium for Monday's maybe-finale, bringing the season total to a woeful 93,929, worst in the league. (To the credit of Stars' management, most attendance figures have seemed fairly legit; the same can't be said at some other places where number are padded to appeal to potential advertisers.)

The Stars lost to Mississippi 2-1 in the most hollow victory in M-Braves' history. Though they finished with 83-56, the best overall record in the Southern League, they'll not make the playoffs. A half-hour earlier, Jacksonville clinched the second half of the Southern League South; because of the constant shifting of minor league rosters, the Southern League season is divided into halves.

Among the 1,527 were at least two men who were there April 19, 1985 when the park opened. One was Mayor Tommy Battle, who sat Monday in the box seats and noted, "Thirty years has gone by fast."

Another was John Pruett, the former Huntsville Times sports editor, who munched on peanuts in the press box that deservedly bears his name.

Our electronic archives retrieves a Pruett column with the oft-repeated quotation from the Stars' opener:

"This is the most exciting thing that has happened to Huntsville since man landed on the moon," city councilman John Glenn said that night, a 10-0 win over Birmingham that included a Jose Canseco grand slam.

On a considerably less exciting occasion, the game ended meekly, on a strike-him-out-throw-him-out double play, a runner caught on a half-hearted steal attempt.

After winning the first half, Huntsville finished in the cellar in the second half and ended the season losing nine of their last 14 games.

Here come the playoffs, though. A chance to turn things around.

Brewers take series opener

By Troy Shockley / Helena Independent Record

The Helena Brewers opened their two-game home series — their last of the season — with a 3-2 win over Missoula at Kindrick Legion Field.

Neither team was able to score until Dionis Hinojosa doubled home Alan Sharkey in the top of the third inning. That lead didn't last, as the Osprey got the offense going in the third as well. That helped the visitors jump ahead 2-1 when Gerard Hernandez connected on a two-RBI double to score Henry Castillo and Maik Ehmcke.

It was another two innings before anyone crossed home plate again. Helena's Luis Aviles got it started with a double to right, and a single to right by Brandon Diaz brought him home to knot the score at 2.

The Brewers got the game winner in the seventh. Edgardo Rivera got the frame started with a single, and advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Aviles. He then came home when Gregory Munoz singled to left. Munoz advanced to third, but the Osprey then sat down the next two Brewers to end the scoring threat.

Helena's J.B. Kole came in and shut down Missoula over the final two innings, however, earning his first professional save. Josh Uhen (2-4) got the win, setting a personal high with seven innings pitched. He gave up the two runs on six hits, striking out three.

Helena will be back on Tuesday to finish their home stand as they face off against Missoula at 7:05 p.m.

Not just “at Night” anymore.
