SFgate.Com:

Reliever Evan Scribner returned for his ninth stint with Oakland since the start of the 2013 season; manager Bob Melvin suggested that Scribner primarily will see use when Dan Otero is unavailable.

Scribner, who had 16 saves at Sacramento, had not pitched for the previous four days, which included a big River Cats blowout at Nashville, a 20-1 win. Scribner said it had been fun to take part in the final regular-season series at old Greer Stadium, which will be replaced next year.

The A's, expected to be supplanted at Triple-A Sacramento by the Giants, as The Chronicle reported earlier this year, are rumored to be atop the list of potential suitors for Nashville's Triple-A club.

"We were joking with (Nashville Sounds players), 'Whoever wins this series gets the new stadium here next year,' " Scribner said.

From Friday's game --

"All seven Sounds runs on the night came via the longball, as Matt Clark, Logan Schafer, and Jason Rogers each went yard.

Rogers paced the Sounds' offense with a 3-for-4 evening. The third baseman is batting .351 (34-for-97) with eight longballs during the month of August.

The red-hot Clark spotted the Sounds a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning when he turned a Luke Jackson fastball into a two-run homer to right, the slugger's 14th big fly in 50 games with the club. Rogers, who had opened the frame with a single, also scored on the blast."

AUDIO: Matt Clark 2-Run HR

"Schafer tacked on a three-run blast of his own later in the frame, his third roundtripper in the last five games, to increase the visitors' lead to 5-0."

AUDIO: Logan Schafer 3-Run HR

"The longball show continued for the Sounds in the third when Rogers launched a massive two-run bomb to left off Jackson that cleared the upper deck seats. The third baseman's blast, which also plated Jeremy Hermida following a leadoff walk, was his 11th of the year and upped the Nashville advantage to 7-0."

ROUND ROCK, Texas - Shortstop Hector Gomez returned from the disabled list and went 3-for-4 to lead the Nashville Sounds to a 5-2 victory over the Round Rock Express in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday evening at The Dell Diamond.

Billy Buckner (1-1) twirled a quality start to pick up his first victory in four outings since joining the Sounds. The right-hander held Round Rock to two runs on three hits in six frames of action.

Matt Clark (2-for-4) homered for the second straight game to give the Sounds a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning. The blast, off Express starter Edwar Cabrera, was Clark's 15th of the year, which ties the slugger with Gomez and Jeremy Hermida for the team lead.

Round Rock rallied to grab a 2-1 lead in the fourth against Buckner when Luis Sardinas delivered a two-out, two-run single to center to plate J.R. Towles (walk) and Corey Patton (single).

The Sounds tied the game at 2-2 in the fourth but missed a chance at a bigger output after loading the bases with no outs. With the bags full following a pair of walks and a Gomez bunt single, Cabrera retired the next two batters before Logan Schafer delivered a game-tying, two-out single to center.

Gomez, who was activated from the disabled list prior to the game, continued his solid contest in the fifth when he pushed the visitors back in front by a 3-2 margin with a two-out flare to center that plated Sean Halton.

Nashville padded its lead in the sixth against Round Rock reliever Nate Adcock. After the right-hander hit a batter, the Sounds drew consecutive walks to load the bases for Jason Rogers (2-for-4), who made it a 4-2 game with an RBI single to center. Halton later contributed a sacrifice fly to up the lead to three.

Rob Wooten closed out the win with a scoreless seventh to nail down his 14th save of the year.

Sounds Eliminated From Playoff Contention With 3-1 Loss

ROUND ROCK, Texas - The Nashville Sounds were eliminated from playoff contention as they suffered a 3-1 defeat at the hands of the Round Rock Express in the second game of a doubleheader on Saturday evening at The Dell Diamond.

Facing an elimination number of one, the Sounds' loss resulted in the cross-state rival Memphis Redbirds winning the PCL American Conference Southern Division.

Round Rock snapped a 1-1 tie with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to hang a defeat on the Sounds (76-66).

The teams were quiet in the early going before Round Rock broke through for a run in the bottom of the fourth against Eric Marzec, who was called up from Double-A Huntsville to make a spot start for the Sounds.

Jared Hoying blooped a one-out single to center then raced around to score when Brett Nicholas followed with a line-drive RBI double into the right field corner to give the Express a 1-0 lead.

Nashville stranded runners in scoring position in each of the first three frames but finally got a run across in the fifth by taking advantage of a fielding error by Express third baseman Josh Wilson. After Eugenio Velez reached on a single and stole second, Wilson was unable to handle a Jason Rogers one-out grounder, allowing Velez to race home in unearned fashion to knot the score at 1-1.

Marzec, who took a no-decision, turned in a solid outing, limiting Round Rock to one run on three hits over five innings of work.

Jose De La Torre took over on the Nashville hill in the sixth and was immediately touched up by the Round Rock offense. Hoying led off with an infield single before hustling to third on a Nicholas single to right, which put runners on the corners with no outs. After fanning Jason Donald for the first out, Drew Robinson lofted a soft floater to shallow left field that plated both runners to give the Express a 3-1 lead.

Round Rock closer Spencer Patton allowed a leadoff single to Pete Orr in the seventh, which extended the infielder's hitting streak to a season-best seven games, before striking out Velez, Hermida, and Rogers in succession to close out the win.

The teams continue the series with a 6:05 p.m. contest on Sunday evening, the penultimate game of the 2014 season. Right-hander Taylor Jungmann (8-6, 4.10) will toe the slab for the Sounds and face Round Rock southpaw Lisalverto Bonilla (3-2, 4.39).

Nashville Game 2 Boxscore

Eric Marzec has pitched well in his limited AAA opportunities, most of which came today. Taylor Jungmann looks to close out the season on a high note tomorrow.

Beloit beats Wisconsin 6-2

Rattlers lose game and ground in Wild Card chase

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

BELOIT, WI - Oakland Athletics first baseman Nate Freiman went 3-for-3 with a homer, a double, and two RBI to help the Beloit Snappers defeat the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 6-2 on Saturday night at Pohlman Field. Wisconsin's loss, coupled with wins by Peoria and Quad Cities, sliced the Timber Rattlers lead in the chase for the final Western Division playoff spot to a single game.

Beloit (54-83 overall, 24-43 second half) grabbed the lead in the bottom of the second inning. Freiman, who was sent down to Beloit to make room on Oakland's major league roster for starting pitcher Drew Pomeranz, started the inning with a broken-bat bloop hit just inside the left field line on an 0-2 pitch against Wisconsin starter Javier Salas. Salas got the first out, but Michael Soto lined a two-run home run over the wall in left-center for a 2-0 lead.

Freiman was sent down to Beloit instead of Oakland's Triple-A affiliate in Sacramento because the Snappers season ends on Monday and he can rejoin the A's on Tuesday instead of waiting ten days to return to Oakland.

Wisconsin (71-66, 35-34) threatened to score in the top of the fourth inning. Beloit starter Joey Wagman retired the first ten batters he faced before Chris McFarland singled with one out in the fourth. Wagman hit Clint Coulter with a pitch. Then, David Denson singled sharply to right to load the bases. But, Wagman struck out the next two hitters to maintain the 2-0 advantage for the Snappers.

Phil Pohl reached on a one out single in the bottom of the fourth inning. Branden Cogswell was next and sent a grounder to short, but a slight bobble took the force play at second out of play and Cogswell was thrown out at first to allow Pohl into scoring position. Melvin Mercedes lined the next pitch into right field for a single to drive in Pohl for a 3-0 lead.

Omar Garcia reached on an infield single with two outs in the top of the fifth and Johnny Davis followed with a single to right. Davis sent Garcia to third and extended his current hitting streak to nine games with that single. But, Chris McFarland's line drive to right-center hung up for Justin Higley to run down and catch for the final out.

Freiman, who had doubled in the third inning, stepped up in the bottom of the fifth inning after a leadoff single by Matt Chapman and sent a towering drive to left for a two-run home run and the Snappers were up 5-0.

The Timber Rattlers got on the board in the top of the sixth inning. Wagman left with two outs and Michael Ratterree at second base. Taylor Brennan greeted reliever Sam Roberts with a line drive home run to center field to bring the Rattlers to within 5-2.

Beloit added a run with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning. Cogswell reached on a two out single against reliever Chris Razo. Cogswell stole second to get into scoring position. Mercedes came through with another single to score Cogswell for a 6-2 lead. The Snappers would load the bases on a single and a hit batsman to bring Freiman back to the plate, but Razo would get a strikeout to end the inning.

The Rattlers could not rally back against the Snappers. Wisconsin didn't have a base runner after the Brennan home run in the sixth inning. Roberts retired the final seven batters he faced. Joel Seddon came on and worked a perfect ninth inning to close out the game.

The Western Division Wild Card is considerably tighter after the action on Saturday night. The Peoria Chiefs defeated the Kane County Cougars 4-2 in Kane County. The Quad Cities River Bandits also won on the road with a 5-1 victory at Burlington. Wisconsin still leads the Wild Card standings with a 35-33 record. The Chiefs and River Bandits are both just one game back at 34-34. There are two games left in the regular season.

Game two of the series is Sunday afternoon at Pohlman Field. Tristan Archer (6-6, 3.62) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. The Snappers will send Hunter Adkins (1-5, 4.47) to the mound. Game time is 2:00pm. Tune in for the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM or IHeartRadio starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 1:40pm.

Wisconsin Boxscore

First I have no idea where the Kane County stuff came from yesterday's LR, I apologize, I knew better...

Brandon Moore pitched well, the other 2 guys not so much.

David Denson (2-4) posted the only multi-hit game as the Rattlers managed just 6 hits.

The Rattlers have been struggling to regularly capitalize on opportunities lately and this was a big one:

Wisconsin Top of the 4th

  • Johnny Davis bunt pops out to first baseman Nate Freiman.
Christopher McFarland singles on a ground ball to center fielder B. J. Boyd.
Clint Coulter hit by pitch. Christopher McFarland to 2nd.
David Denson singles on a line drive to right fielder Justin Higley. Christopher McFarland to 3rd. Clint Coulter to 2nd.
    Michael Ratterree strikes out swinging.
Taylor Brennan called out on strikes.

Final: Dunedin 0, Brevard County 2 (Game One)

Wagner, Peterson combine to two-hit D-Jays

By Andrew Luftglass / Brevard County Manatees

VIERA, Fla. - Tyler Wagner and Stephen Peterson shut down the Dunedin Blue Jays to the tune of a two-hit shutout in a 2-0 Brevard County Manatees victory in game one of Saturday night's doubleheader at Space Coast Stadium.

Wagner began the night with four no-hit innings and Peterson (5-4, 2.98 ERA) nearly carried that performance the rest of the way. The left-handed reliever pitched 1.2 innings before Blue Jays (30-37 second half, 76-60 overall) leadoff man Christian Lopes singled to break up the no-hitter with two outs in the sixth.

The D-Jays nearly scraped a run across the same inning in which they ended the no-hit bid. After Lopes singled, Nick Baligod hit a single of his own and both runners moved into scoring position on a passed ball. Peterson settled down, however, and induced a soft fly out to left field to end the threat.

In the seventh inning, Peterson shut the door for a Manatees (36-31, 72-61) victory. After he issued a one-out walk, the lefty got L.B. Dantzler to ground into a 4-6-3 double play to end the ballgame. Peterson picked up the win with three strikeouts over three scoreless innings of relief.

Taylor Cole took the loss for Dunedin. Cole (8-9, 3.07 ERA) pitched two innings and gave up just one unearned run. He struck out four, walked one and surrendered two hits.

The Manatees scored their only run off of Cole on a Blue Jays defensive miscue. With one out in the first inning, Orlando Arcia singled and Mike Garza worked a walk. The Manatees attempted a double steal and D-Jays catcher Jorge Saez tried to nab Garza at second. His throw skipped into centerfield, however and Arcia scored on the error.

In the fourth inning, the 'Tees grabbed their only other run of the ballgame thanks to a titanic blast from team's home run leader. Victor Roache launched a solo homer over the right field wall to give Brevard County a 2-0 lead. Roache's 18th long ball of the year puts him one behind Nick Ramirez and Hunter Morris for the Manatees' single-season home run record.

Wagner also made history with his tremendous start. Though the right-hander did not factor in the decision, he knocked his 2014 earned run average down to 1.86. That mark gives Wagner the single-season ERA record for the Brevard County Manatees.

Johnson leads 'Tees to shutout victory

By Dave Walkovic / Brevard County Manatees

VIERA, Fla. - Hobbs Johnson tossed six shutout innings to lead Brevard County to a 1-0 victory over the Dunedin Blue Jays at Space Coast Stadium in game two on Saturday Night.

Johnson (12-8, 2.93 ERA) allowed just three hits over his six shutout frames to complete the sweep of the doubleheader. The Blue Jays (76-61, 30-38 second half) loaded the bases against Johnson with no outs in the fourth frame. After Pierce Rankin lined out to second base, Peter Mooney hit a come-backer to the hill. Johnson threw home and catcher Cameron Garfield fired to first to complete the inning-ending double play.

Brevard County (73-61, 37-31) scored the only run of the game in the fifth inning. With one out, Garfield laid down a bunt, which resulted in a single. After Greg Hopkins singled to right field to put runners on first and second, Brandon Macias laced a base hit to left. Dwight Smith, Jr. threw out Garfield out the plate. Hopkins moved up to third on the play to put runners on the corners with two outs. Nathan Orf stepped up and delivered a run-scoring single to center field to plate Hopkins.

Right-hander Martin Viramontes (3-3, 3.70) logged two strikeouts in a perfect seventh inning to record his second save of the season.

Dunedin's Jesse Hernandez (6-11, 4.67) took the loss. He surrendered just one run on seven hits over five innings of work.

The Manatees finish the season on Sunday afternoon with a 3:05 p.m. matinee against Dunedin. Jorge Lopez (10-9, 4.31 ERA) will face off against D-Jays starter Roberto Osuna (0-2, 7.20 ERA). The gates at Space Coast Stadium will open at 2:00 p.m.

Final: Great Falls 5, Helena 2 (Game One)

Final: Helena 7, Great Falls 5 (Game Two)

Brewers and GF split double-header

By Dustin Daniel / Helena Brewers

The Helena Brewers (12-21) split a double-header with the Great Falls Voyagers (14-19) on Saturday by scores of 2-5 and 7-5.

Game one was tightly contested through the first four innings, but the Voyagers would break open a three run lead in the fifth and never relinquish it.

Patrick Palmeiro came up with a two-RBI single to score John Ziznewski and Hunter Jones after Ziznewski led off the inning with a double. Palmeiro went 2-for-4 with three RBI.

Alan Sharkey led the Brewer offense in game two, falling a triple short of the cycle. He would hit a solo home run in the second and cranked a double in the fifth. All three of his homers this year have come in August.

Kaleb Earls (1-0) picked up a victory in just his second appearance in the Pioneer League. He would force a grounder off the bat of Dillon Haupt to end the game.

Tucker Neuhaus' team-high 16-game hitting streak came to an end as he went 0-for-3 with three strikeouts. Neuhaus was originally slated to take the game off, but was inserted in the lineup in the top of the second.

The Brewers have now won three of their last four after ending a nine-game losing streak.

The Brewers and the Voyagers will meet for their final time this year Sunday at Kindrick Field. First pitch is set for 1:05 p.m.

Brewers turn in home split with Voyagers

By Troy Shockley / Helena Independent Record

With the help of Alan Sharkey's hot bat, the Helena Brewers turned in a doubleheader split with Great Falls on Saturday at Kindrick Legion Field.

After dropping the first of the two games 5-2, the Brewers bounced back with a 7-5 win in the nightcap, a makeup game from a rainout last week. That win was helped along by Sharkey's 3-for-3 performance at the plate. He finished with a double, a home run, two runs scored and an RBI.

That game started with Helena taking an early 3-0 lead after the second inning -- a rally started by Sharkey's solo home run, his third of the season. Great Falls got one back in the top half of the third, but the Brewers answered with two in their half of the frame thanks to an RBI triple by Luis Aviles and an RBI double by Dionis Hinojosa. That made it a 5-1 game, but the Voyagers stuck around.

With one run in the fourth and two in the fifth, it became a one-run game. But Helena's Brandon Diaz connected on his second triple of the season, plating two key runs.

Great Falls was able to get one run in the seventh, but no more and the Brewers earned their 25th win of the year -- the decision going to Kaleb Earls (1-0).

The opener was also a close game, with the teams knotted at 1 after the first. Neither team would score until the Voyagers strung together four hits to plate three in the fifth.

The visitors added another run in the top of the seventh. Helena had a shot to extend the game, bringing the tying run to the plate, but wasn't able to convert.

Next up for Helena is another contest against Great Falls at Kindrick, slated for 1:05 p.m.

Demuth got yanked.

He stood in the box, watched his ball slice down the 3B line and didn't start running until the ball landed in fair territory. He did tho, turn it into a double.

To be fair, I am not sure why Diggs took this time to make a statement. Neuhaus did something similar in the first game and Demuth always pretty much dogs it to 1B on infield outs.

That being said, the team seemed to respond and hustled and played hard all game long.
