Here's the post from August 20th - this first game will be a nine-inning game, nightcap likely will be seven:

Helena game suspended in Great Falls

By Troy Shockley / Helena Independent Record

The Helena Brewers got a day off Tuesday, and then wound up only playing a handful of innings Wednesday.

Opening a home-and-home series with Great Falls on Wednesday, the Brewers found themselves trailing 4-0 in the bottom of the third inning. That's when the skies above Centene Stadium opened and soaked the field, forcing the contest to be suspended. The two teams will play on Thursday as scheduled -- and then will play two games at Helena's Kindrick Legion Field on Friday and Saturday -- but will work the rest of Wednesday's game into a doubleheader Aug. 28.

Hunter Jones did most of the damage in the partial game, using a two-out, three-run homer to put the Voyagers up 3-0 at the end of two. Dillon Haupt tacked on another run with an RBI single in the third.

Some days I wish Taylor Brennan was family and today is one of those days.

He just hit his 3rd Grand Slam this season which is a Rattler record.

Do you really think that the Brewers, in the heat of a pennant race, will wait for their AAA season to end before calling up reinforcements? Honestly... AAA playoffs versus the major league team's playoffs? Call up some guys from AA to replace them or find some AAAA-quality street free agents. They may stagger them a bit - call up Schafer, Falu, one of Hermida/Clark, Wooten, and Figaro on the 1st and then Rogers, Weisenburger, the other of Hermida/Clark, Pena and Blazek once AAA ends, but I guarantee you that there will be some callups on 9/1.

Final: Lakeland 4, Brevard County 1

Tigers nip 'Tees, 4-1 in series finale

Brevard County picks up seven hits in defeat

By Justin Rocke / Brevard County Manatees

VIERA, Fla. - The Brevard County Manatees' four-game win streak was snapped on Thursday night, as they fell to the Lakeland Flying Tigers, 4-1 at Space Coast Stadium.

Brevard County (35-31 second half, 71-61 overall) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead, but Lakeland (20-47, 62-72) pushed across a run in every inning from the fourth through the seventh to emerge with a 4-1 advantage.

In the bottom of the third, Brevard County jumped out in front thanks to a defensive miscue by the Flying Tigers. Garrett Cooper led off the frame with a double off the wall in center and Brandon Macias followed with a single to left to put runners at first and third with nobody out.

Nathan Orf was then hit by his Florida State League-leading 22nd pitch to load the bases. After Orlando Arcia popped up to second, Parker Berberet stepped in. After a first pitch ball, Lakeland catcher Austin Green made a snap throw to first to try and pick off Orf. His throw was wild and it skipped past first baseman James Robbins and up the line. Everyone moved up a base, as Cooper scored to give the 'Tees the lead, 1-0.

Berberet walked to re-load the bases, but the Manatees could not push another run across. Lakeland's starter Micah Kellogg (0-1, 2.70 ERA) forced Victor Roache to foul out to first and got Alfredo Rodriguez to fly out to right to end the threat.

Lakeland came right back to knot the game up in the top of the fourth. With one out, Green made up for his errant throw with a towering blast onto the berm in left. The solo home run was his 15th of the season and it tied the game at one.

Curt Powell gave the Flying Tigers the lead for good in the next frame. Jared Reaves led off the fifth with a single to center and advanced to second on a groundout to short by Chad Wright. With two down, Powell grounded a single into center field. Orf, who was playing center for the first time all year, threw high to plate. As the ball went to the backstop, Reaves scored from second to give Lakeland the lead, 2-1.

In the sixth, Jeff McVaney started with a triple down the right field line. Connor Harrell then ripped a double off the wall in right-center to score McVaney to make it 3-1, Lakeland.

That blow chased Manatees starter Taylor Williams (1-2, 4.26) from the ballgame. The right-hander's yielded three runs on seven hits in 5.1 innings. He walked one and struck out five.

Lakeland pushed across its final run against Brevard County reliever Scott Lieser in the seventh. The right-hander issued a lead-off walk to Wright, who subsequently stole second base. After a sacrifice bunt by Curt Powell advanced the runner to third, Lakeland utilized a suicide squeeze.

With Wright breaking from third, Tyler Hanover laid down a perfect bunt towards the first base side. Lieser's only play was to first base and the run scored to push Lakeland's advantage to 4-1.

That was the only run Lieser would allow in an effective relief outing for the 'Tees. The Browerville, Minn. native allowed just one run without giving up a hit. Lieser also walked one and punched out one.

Brevard County brought the tying run to the plate in the seventh and eighth innings, but could not scratch a run across. Orf walked and Arcia singled to spark a two-out rally in the seventh, but Berberet lined out to center to end the threat. In the eighth, Cooper flew out to right after singles by Rodriguez and Greg Hopkins.

Kellogg only went three innings in his start for Lakeland. The right-hander allowed just one run on three hits and walked one. Left-hander Tyler Ford picked up his first FSL win, as he surrendered just one hit and struck out three over three shutout frames. 2013 draftee, Scott Sitz, picked up his eighth save with the Flying Tigers. The former Florida State Seminole scattered two hits in two scoreless innings to close out the game.

Six out of nine Manatees picked up hits in defeat. Hopkins led the offense with a 2-for-4 performance at plate. The two base-knocks tied his season-high in Brevard County.

FSL Post-Season All-Star Tyler Wagner (13-6, 1.91) will get the start for the Manatees tomorrow night, as they start their final series of 2014 against the Dunedin Blue Jays (30-36, 76-59) at Space Coast Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. Fellow Post-Season All-Star Taylor Cole (8-8, 3.12) gets the start for the first-half North Division champion Blue Jays.

Brennan belts Bees in 9-5 Wisconsin win

Rattlers third baseman hits third grand slam of season

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

Taylor Brennan is greeted at home plate after his seventh inning grand slam put the Timber Rattlers up 9-5 over the Burlington Bees on Thursday night. (Ann Mollica/Wisconsin Timber Rattlers)

GRAND CHUTE, WI - Taylor Brennan got a second chance with the bases loaded on Thursday night and made it count. The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers third baseman hit a bases loaded home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to snap a 5-5 tie and lead Wisconsin to a 9-5 victory over the Burlington Bees Thursday night at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium. Brennan drove in five runs in the game as the Rattlers picked up a much-needed win in their push for a playoff spot.

But, it wasn't easy. Burlington leadoff hitter Bo Way walked on four pitches to start the game. He would steal second to get into scoring position. Brandon Bayardi singled to right with two outs to drive in Way for a 1-0 lead.

Wisconsin (70-64 overall, 35-31 second half) answered in the bottom of the first. Chris McFarland and Johnny Davis singled to start the inning. Clint Coulter stepped to the plate with one out and sent a grounder to third. Zach Houchins bobbled the ball, but still managed to step on third for the force on McFarland. However, Houchins made an ill-advised throw to first and the ball sailed into the stands behind first base. This allowed Davis to score the tying run and move Coulter to second base.

Michael Ratterree followed with a single to center on a 3-2 pitch and Coulter scored on the play to put Wisconsin up 2-1. Then, Taylor Brennan hit a sinking line drive to right. Bayardi tried to make a diving catch but the ball glanced off his glove for an RBI triple and a 3-1 lead.

Paul Eshleman added to Wisconsin's lead with a solo home run to center in the bottom of the fourth. Coulter tacked on another run for the Rattlers with a two-out RBI single to drive in McFarland in the bottom of the fifth for a 5-1 lead.

Wisconsin had a chance to bust the game wide open in the bottom of the fifth as they loaded the bases with two outs and Brennan was at the plate. Burlington went to reliever Cole Swanson, who struck out Brennan to keep the Bees down by four.

Burlington (66-69, 28-38) started their comeback when they loaded the bases against Wisconsin starter Chad Thompson with no outs in the top of the sixth inning on two walks and a bloop single to right. The Rattlers called Zach Quintana out of the bullpen to take over for Thompson.

A weak grounder to third off the bat of Stephen McGee allowed a run as the only play was to first base. Then, Ismael Dionicio smacked a singled up the middle on an 0-2 pitch to drive in two runs to cut Wisconsin's lead to a single run.

The Bees tied the game in the top of the seventh. Way singled to start the inning and went from first to third on a wild pitch with Kody Eaves at the plate. Quintana threw a wild pitch on a 1-2 offering to Eaves and that allowed Way to score the tying runs. Eaves would ground out for the first out, but the next two batters singled to put runners on first and second. Quintana got out of the inning when he got Zach Houchins to ground into an inning-ending 6-3 double play.

Swanson, who pitched a scoreless sixth inning, got the first out of the seventh inning. Then, he walked David Denson, Coulter, and Ratterree to load the bases. Ben Carlson was summoned from the Burlington bullpen to face Brennan with the bases loaded in a tie game.

Brennan fell behind in the 1-2 in the count. He lined the next pitch over the wall in left for a grand slam to put the Rattlers up 9-5. The slam was the third of the season by Brennan, who is now 7-for-16 with 26 RBI when he bats with the bases loaded this season. Brennan is the first Timber Rattlers player to hit three bases loaded homers in a single season. The Midwest League record is four and was set by Peter Koegel of the Burlington Bees in 1966.

The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers have hit seven grand slams as a team this season. The record in the league is ten and was set by the Wisconsin Rapids Twins in 1981.

Seth Harvey pitched a scoreless eighth and a scoreless ninth to close out the Bees.

Wisconsin added a half game to their lead in the second half Western Division Wild Card race. The Peoria Chiefs and the Quad Cities River Bandits were both rained out on Thursday night. Wisconsin leads both teams by 2-1/2 games. The Rattlers have four games remaining in the season. The Chiefs and River Bandits both host doubleheaders on Friday and both have five games remaining in the season.

The final home game of the regular season is set for Friday night at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium. Preston Gainey (5-8, 4.20) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Burlington has named Victor Alcantara (6-6, 3.83) as their scheduled starter. Game time is 7:05pm.

If you have enjoyed the 1995 uniforms the Timber Rattlers have been wearing on Appvion Throwback Nights as part of the 20th Anniversary Season presented by Bergstrom Automotive, this game will be your opportunity to take one home. The Timber Rattlers are holding a silent auction during the game and if you have the high bid, you take home the jersey and the pants. Proceeds from the auction will go to assist the family of former Timber Rattlers pitcher Jorge Lopez.

The first 1,000 fans to attend the game will receive a tree sapling from Boldt.

Friday is a North Shore Bank Family Night which means all children 12 and under will receive a free hot dog and soda. Stick around after the game for the final fireworks display of the season. Then, kids 14 and under may participate in Kids Run the Bases thanks to Molina Healthcare after the fireworks. Plus, Potawatomi Bingo Casino presents Baseball Bingo for the final time this season.

If you can't make it out to the ballpark, tune in for the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM or IHeartRadio starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 6:45pm. Friday's game is also available to subscribers of MiLB.TV.

Sounds Fall 10-7 In Series Opener

Nashville Clubs Three Home Runs In Fourth Straight Defeat

Nashville Sounds

(Mike Strasinger / Nashville Sounds)

ROUND ROCK, Texas - The Nashville Sounds (74-65) had their losing streak extended to four games after a 10-7 loss to the Round Rock Express at the Dell Diamond on Thursday night.

Matt Pagnozzi, Jeremy Hermida and Jason Rogers all homered in the contest to give the Sounds 27 homers in the last 18 games, but not enough to pick up the win.

Hermida's solo blast, which erased an early 1-0 deficit in the top of the second, was his 15th of the season, tying him with Hector Gomez for the team lead.

Round Rock responded immediately by scoring three runs off of Sounds starter Donovan Hand (4-8) in the bottom of the third. Hand finished the game by going three innings and allowing four runs, three earned, on five hits.

After a slow start against Express starter Derek Holland, who was making a Major League rehab appearance, the Sounds offense came to life in the top of the fifth when Eugenio Velez knocked in Adam Weisenburger on a groundout.

The Sounds then cut the deficit to 5-4 in the top of the sixth after Pagnozzi's homer brought home a pair of runs.

The long ball hurt the Sounds bullpen in the late innings, as Tim Dillard allowed a solo shot to Jared Hoying to stretch the Round Rock lead to 6-4. Although Brent Leach came on to prevent further damage in the inning, the Express put the game away with a two-run dinger by Josh Wilson in the bottom of the eighth off of Jose De La Torre.

Nashville had one last rally in the top of the ninth, when Hermida knocked in Velez on a double before Rogers hit a towering home run to left with two outs. But the Sounds could not complete the comeback, as Matt Clark struck out to end the game.

The Sounds will look to end their losing streak Friday night against Round Rock, with RHP Michael Blazek (4-4, 4.05) scheduled to start for Nashville opposite Express RHP Luke Jackson (1-2, 9.17). Jeff Hem will have the call on 102.5 The GAME.

Nashville Boxscore

So that's pretty much that from a playoff perspective.

Caleb Gindl has only gotten 1 start since 8/15, he's been relegated to pinch hitting duties of late.

Final: Great Falls 11, Helena 4 (Completion of Aug. 20 Game)

Final: Helena 2, Great Falls 0 (Regularly Scheduled Game)

Brewers Halt Skid at Nine

By Troy Shockley / Helena Independent Record

The skid is over.

Thanks to a stellar pitching performance from Zach Hirsch, the Helena Brewers snapped a nine-game skid with their second shutout of the season, beating Great Falls 2-0 on Thursday night. The seven-inning contest followed the continuation of a game started more than a week ago that was halted by rain. In that one, the Voyagers ran away with an 11-4 win to push the Brewers' losing streak to nine games.

In the nightcap, Hirsch went six innings, surrendering just three hits and walking one while striking out an impressive 11. He had some defensive help behind him, too, as the sixth and seventh innings were both ended on a Helena double play.

The game was scoreless until the fifth, when Dionis Hinojosa's RBI groundout and Luis Aviles' RBI single put the visitors up 2-0. And those were all the runs the club would need, as Wesley Cox closed it out in the seventh -- with the help of that double play.

In the earlier contest, action picked up in the fourth inning with Helena trailing 4-2.

Dillon Haupt connected for a triple that made it a 5-2 game in the fifth. An error and another triple made it a five-run game, and things didn't get any better from there.

Helena will be back in action on Friday, again at Great Falls. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.

Final: @Huntsville 7, Mississippi 5

Stars Get Wire To Wire Victory

Steve Jarnicki, Huntsville Stars

Huntsville, AL - The Huntsville Stars raced out to an early lead and never looked back Thursday night in a series opening 7-5 win over the Mississippi Braves at Joe Davis Stadium.

Hector Gimenez provided some early offense for the Stars, who broke their four game losing streak.

In the bottom of the first, Gimenez hit a three-run home run over the left field wall against Mississippi starter Jason Hursh (11-7) giving the Stars a 3-0 lead.

Mississippi came back with a pair of solo home runs against Huntsville starter Drew Gagnon (11-6).

Seth Loman hit a solo blast to right center in the top of the second inning making it 3-1.

Cedric Hunter then went deep off Gagnon on a solo home run in the top of the fourth. Hunter's 14th home run of the year just stayed fair down the right field line.

With the Stars leading 3-2, they put together a productive bottom of the fourth inning to expand their lead.

With the bases loaded, Erik Komatsu dumped a two-run single into left field making it 5-2. Gagnon then executed a perfect bunt single scoring Nick Ramirez from third base.

Nick Shaw also doubled home a run to give the Stars a 7-2 lead.

Gagnon, who picked up the win, pitched six innings and allowed just four hits. He gave up three runs and struck out seven. He did not walk a batter.

With the Stars ahead 7-3 in the ninth, Mississippi put a scare into the Stars.

Stars reliever David Goforth walked Cedric Hunter. After Loman flew out to left field, David Rhom singled. Daniel Castro walked and the bases were loaded.

Goforth then got Matt Kennelly to fly out to right field.

With two outs, pinch hitter Rich Poythress lined a two-run single into left field scoring a pair of runs.

With the tying runners on base, Goforth got Kyle Wren to ground out to third to end the game.

Gimenez led the Stars with a 3-4 performance and was a triple away from hitting for the cycle.

With the win, the Stars snapped the Braves eight game winning streak.

The Stars (30-36,76-60) lead the Mississippi Braves (41-25, 80-55) 1-0 in their series as it continues Friday. RHP Jacob Barnes(2-5, 4.33) will start for Huntsville. Mississippi will give the ball to RHP Greg Ross (6-3, 2.28) The game can be heard starting at 6:15 CDT on 92.9 FM, 1450 AM and wtkiradio.com.

Huntsville Box Score

Mississippi is playing for their playoff lives, (now just 1/2 game over Jacksonville), so Huntsville can ruin their Labor Day weekend.

The last time RHP Drew Gagnon did not walk a batter in a start was 11 starts ago on July 1st.

CF Tyrone Taylor's AA debut was a bit rough, 0-for-4 with three K's.
