Brewers tried to acquire Justin Morneau from Rockies

Invader3K

I maintain that this team crapped the bed as soon as they realized that they were expected to make the playoffs. They spent the first 120 games or so of the season trying to convince the rest of baseball they were a true playoff contender. Once they swept the Dodgers on the road in mid-August pretty much everyone at least bought in on them being a playoff team. Since then, the Brewers have gone 11-23 (.324 winning %).

They've pitched well enough during this putrid stretch to win the division - but they simply stopped hitting, and the lack of hitting just amplified the overly aggressive baserunning and sometimes erratic defense that comes with the players on this roster.

Would Morneau have really made that big of a difference anyway? The whole offense totally, completely, and fully collapsed and the bullpen chose the wrong times to give up runs. I don't know if one hitter could have won them the 2 or 3 more games they would have needed to get a wildcard.

This is totally right. Every player, except Weeks, declined (or continued to suck) in the 2nd half of the season.

Post All-Star OPS:

Weeks: .928

Lucroy: .776

Maldonado: .704

Segura: .632

Scooter: .629

A-Ram: .733

Braun: .670

Davis: .722

Gomez: .733

Reynolds: .653

Overbay: .661

Morneau alone wouldn't have saved this team.

Of course, adding Morneau could have changed the team dynamic though, possibly having a positive effect on players around him.

Maybe the players mentioned above would have done better, there is no way to prove either way what would have been the ramifications of adding Morneau to the club.

At this point, it looks like it was wise to not give up minor league talent since we went in the tank, but maybe things would have been different had we added him on the positive side...

We'll never know.

How much is Parra going to make next year?? We gave up talent for him, we are going to give up talent for Broxton (makes $9mil next year), and Melvin just exercised the option on Gallardo for $13million. We are dishing out money and prospects for average aging players (Broxton & Gallardo). Its almost as if Melvin assumed we would at least get a WC spot and he went ahead and acquired a few guys who he thought COULD help us now, but be back for next year as well. This tells me he was NEVER thinking about making a huge deal to help push this team through this year. I think its a very conservative/selfish decision on his part. Just my opinion.
