Jimmy Nelson Named PCL Pitcher Of The Year

Sounds Hurler Led Minors In ERA Prior To Mid-July Promotion

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Former Nashville Sounds starting pitcher Jimmy Nelson was named the Pacific Coast League Pitcher of the Year on Wednesday afternoon by the league office.

The 25-year-old right-hander dominated the PCL during his three-month stint with the Sounds earlier this season en route to earning a promotion to the Milwaukee Brewers. Entering the year, he had been rated by Baseball America as the organization's top prospect.

In 17 outings for Nashville, Nelson went 10-2 with a minor league-leading 1.46 ERA (18 ER /111.0 IP) while striking out 114 batters and issuing only 32 walks in his 111 innings of work.

At the time of his July 11th promotion to the Brewers, Nelson led the minor leagues in ERA, ranked 3rd in the minors in strikeouts, and co-led the PCL in victories.

Nelson was a near unanimous choice for Pitcher of the Year in voting by the PCL field managers and representatives from the media in each city across the league, as the only other player to receive a vote for the award was Kyle Hendricks (Iowa).

He becomes the tenth hurler in the Sounds' 37-year franchise history to capture his league's Pitcher of the Year honor. Previous Sounds to earn Pitcher of the Year honors include: Johnny Hellweg (2013, Pacific Coast League), R.A. Dickey (2007, Pacific Coast League), Scott Ruffcorn (1994, American Association), Chris Hammond (1990, American Association), Stefan Wever (1982, Southern League), Jamie Werly (1981, Southern League), Andy McGaffigan (1980, Southern League), Geoff Combe (1979, Southern League), and Bruce Berenyi (1978, Southern League).

Nelson worked quality efforts in 16 of his 17 Nashville outings (15 quality starts, 1 quality relief outing behind rehab starter) and held opponents to a .179 average, the lowest mark in the minors at the time of his departure.

He was named as the Pacific Coast League's starting pitcher for the 2014 Triple-A All-Star Game on July 16 at Durham, his third All-Star selection in five pro seasons, but ultimately missed the contest due to his big league promotion.

The Niceville, Fla. resident, who was the Brewers' 2nd round selection in the June 2010 draft, has posted a 2-5 record and 4.10 ERA (24 ER /52.2 IP) in nine starts for Milwaukee this season.

Nelson was previously named as a member of the 2014 All-PCL team on Monday, the lone Sound honored on that squad.

Final: Lakeland 2, Brevard County 3

Wang dazzles in 3-2, Manatees victory

Brewers' rehabber Wei-Chung Wang sets multiple career-highs in win

By Justin Rocke / Brevard County Manatees

http://www.milb.com/assets/images/5/4/8/91801548/cuts/Wang_Wei_Chung_767idg1l_u1xre2jm.jpg

Milwaukee Brewers rehabber Wei-Chung Wang went a career-high 7.2 innings and tied a career-best with eight strike outs in the Brevard County Manatees, 3-2 win over the Lakeland Flying Tigers on Wednesday night at Space Coast Stadium.

VIERA, Fla. - Left-hander Wei-Chung Wang made his only rehab start with Brevard County one to remember, as he lead the Manatees to a 3-2 win over the Lakeland Flying Tigers on Wednesday night at Space Coast Stadium.

Making his sixth rehab start and his first since being transferred from Class-A Wisconsin this past weekend, Wang (1-0, 2.35 ERA) went a career-high 7.2 innings and tied a career-best with eight punch outs to lead the Manatees (35-30 second half, 71-60 overall) to victory. The win was the southpaw's first ever in a start and his first in any game since this date, August 27, a year ago with the Rookie Gulf Coast League Pirates.

After allowing two runs on five hits through the first three frames, Wang settled down and baffled Lakeland (19-47, 61-72) over his final 4.2 innings of work. Following a single by Curt Powell in the third, the Taiwanese native issued just two more hits and sat down 16 of the last 18 batters he faced.

Right-hander Jon Huizinga came in to relieve Wang in the eighth and finish the ballgame. The side-armer scattered just one hit and struck out one to record the final four outs for his second consecutive save.

Brevard County gave Wang the lead for good with two runs in the bottom of the third inning. Trailing 2-1 after a sacrifice fly to center by Jeff McVaney in the top of the frame, Brandon Macias and Greg Hopkins started the rally with back-to-back singles. Nathan Orf subsequently sacrificed them to second and third with a bunt.

Orlando Arcia grounded out to short, which brought home Macias to knot the game up at two. Tyrone Taylor then put Brevard County out in front, as he ripped a single to left to score Hopkins to make it 3-2, Manatees.

Lakeland initially grabbed the lead in the second on an RBI double by Connor Harrell, but the 'Tees struck back immediately. Leading off the bottom half of the inning, Victor Roache hammered a 1-1 pitch from Flying Tigers starter Jade Todd (2-0, 5.74) towards deep right-center. The ball carried well over the wall for Roache's team-leading 17th home run of the season, which tied the game at one.

The Flying Tigers used three different relievers in their loss. Todd yielded three hits and one run over two innings, before he gave way to Burgos. The southpaw, who took his fourth loss of the year, allowed two runs on three hits and walked three. Whit Mayberry threw two scoreless frames to close out the night. The right-hander surrendered two hits and struck out two.

Taylor picked up the only multi-hit game for the 'Tees. The top prospect in the Brewers' organization according to MLB.com went 2-for-4 with an RBI. As a team, Brevard County tallied eight hits in its fourth-consecutive win.

Taylor Williams (1-1, 4.05) will try and complete the sweep tomorrow, as he makes his first home start for the Manatees. First pitch between Lakeland and Brevard County is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. at Space Coast Stadium. Right-hander Micah Kellogg (0-1, 2.57) makes third appearance and second start for the Flying Tigers tomorrow evening.

Brevard County Box Score

Tyrone Taylor went 2-for-4 but the big news came after the game. Haven't seen it confirmed yet, but it appears with the Manatees all but eliminated from playoff contention, Taylor is headed to Huntsville to finish out the season. Victor Roache was walked, hit by a pitch, and hit his team leading 17th home run. Nathan Orf and Mike Garza each added a single and a walk.

Brevard County Play-By-Play

The Manatees strung together some good plate appearances in the third to get Wang a lead.

Brevard County Bottom of the 3rd

Pitching Change: Alex Burgos replaces Jade Todd.

Brandon Macias singles on a fly ball to left fielder Chad Wright.

Greg Hopkins singles on a line drive to left fielder Chad Wright. Brandon Macias to 2nd.

Final: Missoula 11, Helena 4

Osprey sweep Brewers, win 11-4

By Dustin Daniel / Helena Brewers

The Missoula Osprey (15-14) swept the Helena Brewers (9-19) in a two-game series with an 11-4 win on Wednesday from Ogren Park Allegiance Field.

It was Helena's eighth straight loss, setting a season-high for losing streak.

A majority of the scoring for the O's came in the third when six runs scored on three hits. Stewart Ijames hit a grand slam off of J.B. Kole (2-3) to lead the way for Missoula. It was the second grand slam that the Brewers have given up this season and they have both been to the Osprey.

Ijames homered again in the fourth, this time a two-run homer off Donnie Hissa. Ijames was 2-for-5 in the game with six RBI in all.

Tucker Neuhaus hit a three-run home run in the eighth for Helena to extend his hitting streak to 12 games. Neuhaus was 0-for-2 in the game up to that point and on the verge of ending his streak before lining one over the right field fence in his final at-bat.

Josh Uhen pitched three shutout innings of relief for the Brewers, giving up just one hit and striking out one.

The Brewers now head to Great Falls to take on the Voyagers at Centene Stadium. First pitch from the first game of a double-header on Thursday is set for 6:00 p.m.

Helena Box Score

Three of the six hits for the Brewers came off the bat of 24 year old outfielder Dionis Hinojosa who went 3-for-3. The eighth inning home run for Tucker Neuhaus was his 3rd long ball of the year.

Bees stop Rattlers 1-0

Wisconsin hitters strike out 17 times

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

http://www.milb.com/assets/images/5/0/2/91842502/cuts/CrowdAug27_qt0q8rye_jwf643vz.jpg

There were 5,345 fans on hand for Wednesday's game at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium. (Ann Mollica/Wisconsin Timber Rattlers)

GRAND CHUTE, WI - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers had a game chopped off their lead in the second half Western Division Wild Card as they lost 1-0 to the Burlington Bees Wednesday night at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium. The Bees scored their run on a fortunate bounce in the fourth inning and three of their pitchers combined to strikeout seventeen Timber Rattlers batters.

Erick Aguilera singled with one out in the top of the fourth inning for Burlington's first hit. Wisconsin starter Clint Terry walked the next batter. Terry was ahead of Zach Houchins 1-2 and got Houchins to send a bouncer up the third base line. The ball hit the corner of the third base bag and bounded over Sthervin Matos into left field for a double to score Aguilera for a 1-0 lead.

Burlington starting pitcher Sean Newcomb, the #1 pick of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in the 2014 draft, pitched just four innings in the game, but allowed two hits and struck out ten without walking a batter.

Wisconsin (70-64 overall, 34-31 second half) got a man to second base against reliever Ronnie Muck in the fifth inning. Rafael Neda doubled with one out, but was left stranded there as Muck retired the next two batters. Neda was the only Wisconsin runner to reach scoring position in the game.

The first Timber Rattlers batter to reach to leadoff an inning in the game was Clint Coulter, who drew a walk to start the seventh inning. But, Muck got a 5-4-3 double play and a ground out to end the inning. Muck struck out four in his three innings of work.

Burlington (66-68, 28-37) threatened to pad their lead twice. In the top of the eighth, they loaded the bases with one out. Brandon Moore came on in relief for the Rattlers and got a strikeout and a fly ball to center to end the inning. In the ninth, they had runners at the corners with two outs before Moore got the popout to second to end the inning.

But, the Rattlers went down against Bees closer Alan Busenitz in order in both the eighth and ninth innings. Busenitz struck out three in his two innings of work.

The Rattlers lead in the Western Division Wild Card is now at two games over both the Peoria Chiefs and the Quad Cities River Bandits. Peoria defeated the Beloit Snappers 4-2 at home and Quad Cities beat Clinton 11-2 at home. There are five games remaining in the regular season.

Game two of the series with the Bees is Thursday night. Chad Thompson (2-2, 4.50) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Burlington sends Ryan Etsell (5-4, 3.69) to the mound. Game time is 7:05pm.

The first 1,000 fans to attend this game will receive a bobblehead of the former Timber Rattlers outfielder Shin-Soo Choo courtesy of U.S. Foods. This is the final bobblehead of nine from the 20thAnniversary Season Series. It's a Thirsty Thursday presented by Arty's Old Fashioned and 95.9 KISS FM, too. There will be 21-oz Pepsi products, 16-oz Miller products, and Arty's Old Fashioned drinks available for just $2.

If you can't make it out to the ballpark, catch all the action on AM1280, WNAM or IHeartRadio starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 6:45pm. Thursday's game is also available to MiLB.TV subscribers.

WP: Ronnie Muck (2-3)

LP: Clint Terry (3-5)

SAVE: Alan Busenitz (16)

TIME: 2:42

ATTN: 5,345

Wisconsin Boxscore

From yesterday's game story:

The Timber Rattlers continue their homestand on Wednesday when they host the Burlington Bees. Clint Terry (3-4, 2.54) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. The Bees have Victor Alcantara (6-6, 3.83) as their scheduled starter. Game time is 7:05pm.

So I was shocked when 1 of the 2 players I was hyping prior to the draft in Sean Newcomb was on the hill today against my favorite team. He hadn't gotten off to a fast start in A ball as he had given up more runs than IP coming into today's action. However the T-Rats couldn't solve him tonight as he had 10 strike outs in just 4 IP. A Johnny Davis infield single in the 1st and Clint Coulter line drive single to CF in the 4th were the only 2 base runners in those 4 innings.. He was working away and up, regularly hitting 95, I don't recall him throwing anything offspeed until the 4th. Even though he threw hittable pitches for whatever reason our boys just couldn't square him up when he missed back over the plate.

Clint Terry tried to match him pitch for pitch and came up just short, Clint doesn't have anywhere near Sean's velocity, but he's getting results in A ball. I'll take 5 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, and 8 SO every time out...

Bees' pitchers struck out 17 Rattlers in total and with just 3 hits and 1 walk this was a very quiet game from the Wisconsin perspective.

Sounds Lose Tough Battle In Greer Stadium Finale

Greer Stadium Hosts Sellout Crowd of 11,067 For Its Last Cheer

Nashville Sounds

http://www.milb.com/assets/images/0/7/8/91856078/cuts/last_cheer_x1u27ols_v15y54tu.jpg

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Nashville Sounds (74-64) celebrated the team's final regular season game in Greer Stadium history before a sellout crowd of 11,067 fans Wednesday night, but took an 8-5 loss to the visiting Sacramento River Cats.

The attendance of 11,067 marks the first sellout at Greer since 2010 and the largest Greer Stadium crowd since 2007.

Sacramento spoiled the Sounds' party with a six-run eighth inning, in which the River Cats batted around with seven hits and a sacrifice fly, to take an 8-5 lead over Nashville.

Nashville had scored five unanswered runs to take a 5-2 lead over the River Cats, which began with when shortstop Pete Orr was hit by an 0-2 pitch from Sacramento starting pitcher Arnold Leon with two outs and the bases loaded in the home half of the fourth inning.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, outfielder Logan Schafer crushed a home run into the Twice Daily Fan Zone beyond the wall in right field to knot the game at two runs apiece.

The Sounds took the lead on Jeremy Hermida's two-run home run over the right-field wall in the sixth inning. The rocket, his 14th of the year, scored Sean Halton, who reached base on an error.

Nashville extended its lead to three runs when Eugenio Velez grounded into a fielder's choice with the bases loaded. Orr scored from third on the play, sliding past catcher Bryan Anderson, to avoid the double play.

But the Cats rallied to win the four-game series, 3-1, and hand Nashville only its second losing home series this season.

The Sounds loaded the bases to bring the game-winning run to the plate with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, but Lucas May struck out swinging in the last at-bat at Greer.

Sounds reliever Rob Wooten (0-2) was charged the loss and blown save, after allowing four runs on five hits and one walk in 1/3 innings of work. Figaro pitched two scoreless frames before Wooten, but .

Dustin Molleken also saw work from the Sounds bullpen and served up 1 2/3 scoreless frames for Nashville with two strikeouts.

The loss, coupled with Memphis' 5-4 win over Fresno, puts Nashville three games back of the Redbirds for first place in the division with six games to go.

Prior to the game the Sounds announced their team awards, naming Jimmy Nelson Sounds MVP, Dustin Molleken Community MVP, and Jason Rogers the Fan Favorite.

The Sounds will wrap up their regular season on the road in Round Rock with a six-game series against the Express (AAA-Rangers). The Sounds will send RHP Donovan Hand (4-7, 5.85) to the hill opposite the rehabbing Rangers LHP Derek Holland (1-1, 6.52). First pitch at 7:05 p.m. CT.

Nashville Boxscore

Rob Wooten and Donovan Hand were 2 pitchers that for years looked like they could be legit BP options in Milwaukee but have completely fallen apart and might not even be with the organization next year. Hand has been better of late as a starter but his season numbers are just awful and Wooten hasn't pitched well since returning from Milwaukee. This Nashville pitching staff has been loaded with veterans from the start and with losses of Fiers, Mills, Jeffress, and Nelson has become even more nondescript than it was in April when we were debating the roster construction of the AA & AAA clubs.

The bullpen implosion which torpedoed the last regular season game at Greer was detailed above, no reason to cover it again. Not that I'm nostalgic about Greer as I never attended a game there and with the reports of Nashville latching onto a different organization I care even less about the franchise, but it would have been nice for the fans to close it down with a W. Don't get me wrong, Jeff and the front office staff in Nashville have been great, in fact everything we could have asked for, but I'm admittedly bitter about getting punted when they finally get a modern facility.

I know the Brewer AAA teams haven't been interesting in years as the Brewers began storing nothing more than MLB depth there, making the "win now" trades for the MLB team meant that there just weren't going to be many prospects coming through Nashville. I do see both sides, but I'm unhappy about the situation none the less.

I really don't want a west coast affiliation at AAA, I was happy to be out of that region entirely when the Brewers ditched High Desert.

Final, Makeup of August 1st Game: AZL Dodgers 19, AZL Brewers 7

Maryvale Game One Box Score

First of all, it's unclear via MiLB.com how much of this action took place last night and how much back on August 1st, if any. LHP Kodi Medeiros just pitched two innings on Tuesday, in which he allowed four runs. He certainly would not have started Wednesday's game in which the results were truly horrid --

AZL Dodgers Top of the 1st

Deivy Castillo strikes out swinging.

Deion Ulmer doubles (5) on a line drive to left fielder Juan Ortiz. Deion Ulmer advances to 3rd, on a throwing error by left fielder Juan Ortiz.

Clint Freeman singles on a line drive to left fielder Juan Ortiz. Deion Ulmer scores.

Ibandel Isabel doubles (5) on a line drive to left fielder Juan Ortiz. Clint Freeman scores.

Federico Celli doubles (1) on a line drive to right fielder Carlos Belonis. Ibandel Isabel scores.

Jared Walker grounds out to first baseman Tanner Norton. Federico Celli to 3rd.

Daniel Canellas doubles (5) on a line drive to left fielder Juan Ortiz. Federico Celli scores.

Cristian Gomez singles on a line drive to left fielder Juan Ortiz. Daniel Canellas scores. Cristian Gomez to 2nd on the throw.

Ariel Sandoval walks.

Pitching Change: Miguel Diaz replaces Kodi Medeiros.

Deivy Castillo flies out to left fielder Juan Ortiz.

So that outing, unknown to us until now, really impacts Medeiros' numbers on the season, as you can see at his player page link -- 7.13 ERA over 17.2 IP, WHIP 2.09, 13 BB, at least there's 26 K's.

Sorry to say, none of the other four pitchers involved in this game did themselves proud.

Don't try to read too much into the counting stats for this box score, as they reflect the August 1st date. For instance, it shows Monte Harrison as hitting his 3rd double in this game, he actually has seven now.

Final, Regularly Scheduled Game: AZL Brewers 4, AZL Dodgers 3, ten innings

Walkoff win!

Looked like it might be a disappointing night when the Dodgers scored one in the top of the 10th, but then this two-run rally happened --

AZL Brewers Bottom of the 10th

Pitching Change: Lenix Osuna replaces Derrick Sylvester.

Troy Stokes singles on a line drive to center fielder Alex Verdugo.

Leudi Otano singles on a ground ball to catcher Ryan Scott. Troy Stokes to 2nd.

Milan Post out on a sacrifice bunt, pitcher Lenix Osuna to second baseman Deion Ulmer. Troy Stokes to 3rd. Leudi Otano to 2nd.

Daniel Leonardo singles on a ground ball to pitcher Lenix Osuna. Troy Stokes scores. Leudi Otano to 3rd.

Monte Harrison singles on a line drive to center fielder Alex Verdugo. Leudi Otano scores. Daniel Leonardo to 2nd.

Nice!

I am fascinated by successful inherited runner stories, as they often go overlooked in the big picture, especially involving having to get multiple outs -- how about this job in the top of the 10th:

Inherited runners-scored: Hudgens 3-0.

AZL Dodgers Top of the 10th

Ryan Scott walks.

Cristian Gomez out on a sacrifice bunt, third baseman Leudi Otano to first baseman Tanner Norton. Ryan Scott to 2nd.

Deivy Castillo singles on a line drive to center fielder Troy Stokes. Ryan Scott scores.

Deion Ulmer singles on a line drive to left fielder Elvis Rubio. Deivy Castillo to 2nd.

Alex Verdugo singles on a line drive to right fielder Monte Harrison. Deivy Castillo to 3rd. Deion Ulmer to 2nd.

Pitching Change: Brock Hudgens replaces Tyler Alexander.

Offensive Substitution: Pinch-hitter Clint Freeman replaces Ibandel Isabel.

Clint Freeman grounds into a double play, first baseman Tanner Norton to catcher Milan Post to first baseman Tanner Norton. Deivy Castillo out at home.

Nice defence, guys!

Maryvale Game Two Box Score

So much to like about Monte Harrison, who played RF in this game, am just so enthused about this young man's future. He's been very consistent all summer season.

Maryvale Game Two Game Log

Speaking of consistent, 20-year-old 3rd year pro and undrafted Puerto Rico signee RHP Joshua Torres simply forces me to mention him each and every outing (14 appearances, seven starts), WHIP now 1.10 in 51.2 innings, kudos, sir.
