Matt Clark Named PCL Batter Of The Week

Nashville Sounds

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Nashville Sounds infielder Matt Clark has been named the Pacific Coast League's Batter of the Week for the August 18-24 period.

The red-hot 27-year-old posted a .536 average (15-for-28), recording multiple hits in each of last week's contests, with three home runs and nine RBIs in seven games over the stretch.

Clark clubbed his 13th homer of the year on Sunday night at Greer Stadium to extend his current hitting streak to 14 games. The 14-game hit streak, during which the California-native is batting .482 (27-for-56), is the 2nd-longest by a Sounds player this season.

In the month of August, Clark leads the Sounds with nine home runs, 32 hits, 20 RBIs, 21 runs and 13 multi-hit games.

Overall, Clark is batting .333 (55-for-165) with 13 home runs and 33 RBIs in 45 games since joining the team on July 4.

Clark's award is the second accumulated by a Sounds player during the 2014 season (also Mike Fiers, April 28-May 5) and the first PCL honor given to a Nashville batter since Caleb Gindl in 2012 (August 20-27 period).

The award is the fourth weekly honor of Clark's seven-year career. He was previously honored three times by the Texas League in 2010.

Steve Jarnicki's Huntsville Notes --

With the Stars loss they will not be able to set a franchise record for most wins in a season. Currently the Stars are 75-58 with just seven games left. The franchise record for most wins in a season is 82 by the 1989 team (Athletics) that finished 82-61. That team made the postseason and lost in the Semi-Finals to the eventual champion Birmingham Barons. The 2014 Stars can still tie that club for most wins, but will have to win all seven of the remaining games…

Mitch Haniger’s walk-off RBI single was the sixth time this year that the Stars had been beaten on a walk-off hit by their opponent…The Stars bullpen has allowed at least one run in five straight games…The Stars played their fourth one-run game in their last six contests, going 2-2 in these games…The Stars fell to 8-10 in extra innings this season and have played the second most (18) extra innings games only behind Mobile (20) who improved to 12-8…Hector Gimenez hit a two-run home run. The Stars have hit five home runs against the BayBears in the first three games of the series after only hitting three total against Mobile in their first ten games of the season…So far through the first three games of the series, 10 of the 12 runs accounted for have been off home runs…The Stars scored four runs and all four came with two outs…The Stars have only scored 137 runs in their last 37 games. In those games they are 16-21 and averaging a meager 3.7 runs per game….

Nick Ramirez did not play Sunday but went 0-3 on Saturday. In his last 18 games Ramirez is still batting only .138 (9-65. 2 HR, 9 RBI). Ramirez’s home run on Friday gave him at least one home run against every team in the Southern League except Jacksonville and Mississippi… Gimenez went 1-4 with a two-run homer. He has now homered in five out of his past seven games. In his last fifteen games, Gimenez has six home runs and 20 RBI. He continues to climb out of his early slump since joining the Stars. He started just 1 for 16 in his first five games. In his last 28 games, he is now 28 for 112 (.250) with seven home runs and 27 RBI…C Shawn Zarraga pinch hit Sunday and went 0-1 and is 0 for his last 15 at the plate. Since he returned to the Stars from Triple-A Nashville on August 8th, he is 10-44 (.227 with 2 RBI).

Jose Pena just lost a ball in the lights which landed a couple of feet onto the warning track right behind him, but the ball hung up there so long Johnny Davis made it all the way over from CF to pickup the ball and throw it in. The play turned into stand up triple but Salas got out of the inning, nice job Javier.

Sounds Rattled By River Cats, 20-1

Nashville's Sean Halton Goes 2-for-3 With Team's Lone RBI

Nashville Sounds

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Nashville Sounds (74-62) allowed a franchise-high 20 runs to the visiting Sacramento River Cats to lose 20-1 Monday night at Greer Stadium. The loss, coupled with Memphis' 1-0 win over Fresno, gives the Redbirds a one-game lead in the division.

Sacramento racked up 24 hits, matching the most allowed by Sounds pitchers in franchise history, to hand Nashville its largest deficit in a loss this season. Each of the R-Cats batters finished with multiple hits.

The River Cats went up 2-0 in the second inning when infielder Jose Martinez lifted pitcher Billy Buckner's 2-1 pitch just over the left-field wall. The dinger scored Shane Peterson, who singled to get on base.

Buckner (4-6) surrendered two more runs in the top of the third inning: one via a wild pitch and another on Martinez's two-out single. Martinez finished with three hits, while Nick Buss and Alden Carrithers totaled four each.

The 30-year-old Sounds pitcher took the loss in his first start for Nashville, allowing six runs on six hits over three innings of work. Buckner fired five strikeouts and issued two walks in the 74-pitch outing.

Sacramento continued its offensive barrage with four runs in the fourth inning and three in the fifth to take an 11-1 lead on the Sounds.

Sounds reliever Jose De La Torre entered in the fourth inning to pitch three innings for Nashville, but allowed five runs to match a career-high on seven hits and one walk.

In the seventh inning, the R-Cats touched reliever Dustin Molleken for three runs on two hits and two walks. Only Rob Wooten kept the R-Cats off the board with his spotless eighth inning.

Reliever Tim Dillard followed in the ninth to let in six runs on five RBI singles, which included a ground ball single that spun into Matt Clark's jersey to stop the play, and one throwing error by Dillard.

Outfielder Sean Halton, 2-for-3, gave Nashville its only run of the contest with his two-out single in the home half of the fourth inning. Pete Orr, Eugenio Velez, Jason Rogers, Hunter Morris and Caleb Gindl also recorded a hit in the contest.

The Sounds will play game three against Sacramento on Tuesday afternoon at 7:05 p.m. Nashville sends RHP Taylor Jungmann (8-5, 4.22) to the hill opposite the Sacramento's RHP and former Vandy star Matt Buschmann (8-6, 4.56).

Nashville Boxscore

This is the ugliest boxscore/recap I've covered in my years helping out with the LR. The score pretty much speaks for itself... what a drubbing... and of course Memphis climbs back on top in the play-off picture.

Rattlers rally to beat Beloit 7-3

Wisconsin wins to maintain lead in Wild Card race

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

http://www.milb.com/assets/images/6/1/4/91453614/cuts/Seidenberger_Aug_25_yzjh3nak_6vphpe20.jpg

Trevor Seidenberger tossed a scoreless ninth inning to close out the Beloit Snappers in a 7-3 Timber Rattlers victory on Monday night.

GRAND CHUTE, WI - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers were outhit by the Beloit Snappers Monday night at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium, but Wisconsin picked up a 7-3 victory thanks to five Beloit errors in the game. The win was an important one for the Rattlers in their race for the second half Western Division Wild Card.

Beloit (52-80 overall, 22-40 second half) scored first. BJ Boyd doubled with one out in the first. Matt Chapman was next and he singled to center to drive in Boyd for a 1-0 lead.

The Snappers had a chance to add to their lead in the fourth inning. Ryan Mathews hit a high fly to left that was lost in the twilight and hit on the warning track for a double. An error on the play allowed Mathews to take third base with no outs. Salas struck out the next two batters and got the third out on a grounder to third to strand Mathews at third.

But, Mathews added to the lead later in the game as he hit a two-out solo home run in the top of the sixth for a 2-0 lead.

The Rattlers (69-63, 33-30) rallied in the bottom of the sixth. David Denson doubled off the wall in center with one out. Wisconsin loaded the bases as Clint Coulter was hit by a pitch and Michael Ratterree singled. Taylor Brennan knocked in Denson with a sacrifice fly to left that was deep enough to allow Coulter to take third and Ratterree to move to second.

Rafael Neda sent a grounder to second that was bobbled. A rushed throw to first to get Neda was wild and both Coulter and Ratterree scored for a 3-2 lead.

Beloit answered in the top of the seventh against reliever Luke Curtis. Josh Ludy hit a two-out solo home run to the beach beyond the wall in right-center to tie the game 3-3.

Jose Pena reached on an error to start the bottom of the seventh and Chris McFarland drew a walk. Denson singled back through the middle with one out and Pena scored for a 4-3 Wisconsin advantage.

The Timber Rattlers put the game away in the bottom of the eighth inning without putting the ball out of the infield until the final batter. Ratterree was hit by a pitch and took second on a wild pitch. Brennan sacrificed him to third base and Neda drew a walk to put runners on the corners with one out.

Johnny Davis dropped a perfect safety squeeze bunt to get Ratterree home from third. Davis would reach on the bunt single as Beloit didn't have anyone covering first base. Pena was hit on an 0-2 curveball to load the bases again.

McFarland was at the plate with the bases loaded, one out, and the infield playing in on the grass. McFarland sent a hard grounder to short and the throw home was wild. Pena and Davis scored on error and Wisconsin was up 7-3.

Trevor Seidenberger, who just rejoined the Timber Rattlers earlier in the day, gave up a leadoff double in the top of the ninth inning. Then, he retired the next three batters to close out the Wisconsin win.

In the Western Division Wild Card Race, Wisconsin moved their record to 33-30 in the half. The Quad Cities River Bandits defeated Cedar Rapids 3-2 on Monday night to get to 31-32. The Peoria Chiefs, who are 30-32, were rained out in Clinton on Monday and will play a doubleheader on Tuesday with the LumberKings. Wisconsin has a two game lead over the River Bandits and are 2-1/2 games up on the Chiefs for the Wild Card spot. There are seven games remaining in the regular season.

The final game of the series between Wisconsin and Beloit is Tuesday afternoon. Barrett Astin (7-7, 5.19) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Hunter Adkins (1-4, 4.27) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Snappers. Game time is 12:05pm.

Tuesday is Kids Rock the Ballpark presented by Neuroscience Group. Kids 12 and under will receive a voucher good for a free hot dog and soda and can play on the inflatable games for free throughout the game as part of Kids Rock the Ballpark presented by Neuroscience Group. Appleton Rock School will be rocking the ballpark, too with a pre-game performance in front of the stadium. Peppa Pig returns to meet with fans before and during the game on this Tuesday afternoon. Milwaukee Brewers mascot Bernie Brewer will also be at the ballpark for photos and high-fives!

LP: Tyler Vail (3-6)

Wisconsin Boxscore

Javier Salas pitched a real nice game, he was around the plate all night, stuck out 6, and didn't walk any. He left some pitches up early and the HR was a pretty poor pitch, but he looked good and I pleased with how he handled that misplayed ball I mentioned in an earlier post.

TLB beat me to the punch on David Denson (2-4,2B,BB) but I'll discuss him anyway. In his 1st AB he made poor contact and dribbled a ball back to the pitcher. In his 2nd AB he smoked a line drive that the 1B went up and snagged for a nice defensive play, in his 3rd AB he drilled that double which TLB mentioned, and in his 4th AB he smashed a ball off the pitcher's mound and into CF. The TV crew was talking to Rob Zerjav who mentioned Denson might repeat WI next year and while I know he lost quite a bit of time with that broken bone, I sincerely hope that is not the case. David hasn't looked lost at the plate all season, his defense made some nice strides, and he runs very well for a big man. In short, there's nothing really holding him back except for his lost time. He probably wouldn't spend a full season in WI anyway but I'd still like to see him get pushed a little. David Denson for BC in 2015!

Final (12 innings): Billings 7, Helena 6

Mustangs sweep with win in extras

By Dustin Daniel / Helena Brewers

The Helena Brewers (9-17) lost their sixth straight on Monday, falling 7-6 to the Billings Mustangs (17-10) in 12 innings.

Helena would take the first lead of the game with four runs over the first three innings. Eric Williams led off the second with a triple and then came in to score on a sacrifice bunt from Luis Aviles. Williams was 2-for-5 with a double, triple and a run.

After taking a 4-0 lead to the fourth, the Brewers would give up six straight runs to fall behind for the first time in the game in the seventh. It was a four-run, two-hit inning for the Mustangs. Taylor sparks hit his sixth double of the season to lead off the inning and later scored on an error.

Errors would prove costly in the game for Helena. They would more than double the Mustangs in hits, but four errors in the game allowed Billings to take away the win.

Trailing 6-5 going to the bottom of the ninth, Helena's Edgardo Rivera led off with a double and scored on an RBI single from Gregory Munoz forcing the game to extras.

Cory Thompson led off the top of the twelfth with a routine grounder to third. Tucker Neuhaus made an errant throw past first baseman Dustin DeMuth which allowed Thompson to take second. He was then bunted over to third and scored on a sacrifice fly from Ty Washington.

The Brewers would get the bases loaded in the bottom of the inning with just one out, but then lined in to a double play to end the game.

The Brewers are now 0-6 in 2014 in extra-inning games.

The Brewers now head to Missoula to take on the Osprey in a two-game series. First pitch on Tuesday from Ogren Park Allegiance Field is set for 7:05 p.m.

Helena Box Score

Helena bats managed 15 hits, and five players had multi-hit games. Three hit performances turned in by Mitch Meyer (3-for-5 with a home run) and Edgardo Rivera (3-for-5 with a double). Gregory Munoz and Dustin Demuth each went 2-for-4 to raise their Pioneer League season batting averages. Munoz is now batting .322 and DeMuth is hitting .430. Brandon Diaz continued his late season scuffle. While Diaz did managed a line drive single early in the game, he also struck out 4 times. Jorge Ortega had one of his more impressive starts of the season striking out eight batters over six innings pitched. Ortega also only allowed three hits and one earned run over that span. Pitching all three extra innings, Ryan Deeter allowed just one hit, and the lone run against him was unearned as chronicled above. Defensively Luis Aviles had two errors to bring his season total to 19 and Tucker Neuhaus' throwing error in the 12th inning was his 15th error of the season.

Billings edges Brewers in 12 innings

Helena Independent Record

The Billings Mustangs let the Helena Brewers back into the game Monday night, but still prevailed in the end, 7-6 in 12 innings.

The Mustangs' Cory Thompson reached base on a throwing error in the top of the 12th inning. He then advanced to third base before Ty Washington's sacrifice fly to to left field was deep enough for Thompson to score what would be the game-winning run.

Helena forced extra innings when they rallied from a run behind in the ninth inning to knot the score at 6-all.

After Edgardo Rivera led off with a double, he then proceeded to race home when the next batter, Gregory Munoz, stroked an RBI single.

Billings trailed 5-2 going into the seventh inning, but exploded for four runs in the top of the frame to pull ahead 6-5.

The big blow was Argenis Aldazoro's 2-out, 2-run single, scoring Cory Thompson and Ty Washington, helped by a throwing error by Helena shortstop Luis Aviles.

Ryan Deeter pitched the final three innings for Helena (22-41 overall, 9-16 second half) and took the loss while Ty Sterner's scoreless 11th inning was enough to get the win for Billings (33-31 overall, 16-10 second half).

The Brewers were led by Mitch Meyer at the plate as the right fielder went 3 for 5 with a home run and two RBIs.

Helena outhit Billings 15 to seven for the game, but had four errors to just one for the Mustangs.

Final: @AZL Brewers 8, AZL Diamondbacks 2

Maryvale Box Score

The process is taking longer than projected for RHP Gian Rizzo, who dazzled at age 17, but the first outing in ten days for the soon-to-be 21-year-old saw him fan seven and walk zero in three innings to close out the big win. Rizzo now has a 32-to-3 K-to-BB ratio this season, 209-to-33 for his career (203 IP). Mancrush still thrives for the Venezuela native.

RHP's Bubba Blau and Milton Gomez each threw three innings of one-run ball.

Maryvale Game Log

Brewers scored eight runs, but only had three RBI. That's a bit extreme, but the rookie leagues always see big run vs. RBI differentials thanks to errors, wild pitches, and passed balls.

Spread out over four innings, none of the first six Maryvale runs were earned (the Crew should have been down 2-0 after seven). In fact, the team scored its eight runs while going 1-for-14 with RISP.

Oh yeah, Monte Harrison. On base four times (OBP is now .400), the just-turned 19-year-old doubled, singled twice, and was HBP. He was also caught stealing for only the second time in 31 attempts.

CF Carlos Belonis was 2-for-5 with two steals and three runs scored.

Brewers maintain a 1.5 game lead for a playoff spot in the overall season standings. Four games remain for the A-Crew.

Stars Fall In Pitcher's Duel

Steve Jarnicki, Huntsville Stars

Mobile, AL - A.J. Schugel (6-3) of the Mobile BayBears outdueled the Huntsville Stars starter Austin Ross (1-3) as the BayBears defeated the Stars 3-1 Monday night at Hank Aaron Stadium in Mobile.

The game was scoreless until the bottom of the seventh inning.

Ross, who only allowed four hits up until the seventh, allowed a leadoff infield single to Dustin Martin in the seventh. Ross then proceeded to walk the next two hitters.

With the bases loaded and nobody out, Ross got Ryan Court to hit a gronunder to shortstop. Yadiel Rivera threw to home cutting down the lead runner Martin.

The bases stayed loaded and Dallas Tarleton smoked a three-run double down the right field line giving Mobile a 3-0 lead.

Ross, who suffered the loss, turned in a quality start. He pitched 6.1 innings and allowed three runs on seven hits. He struck out five and walked three.

Schugel, who earned the win, dominated the Stars by firing seven shutout innings. He gave up only two hits and struck out four.

The Stars scored their only run in the top of the eighth. With two outs, Kentrail Davis lined a single into centerfield scoring Nick Ramirez making it 3-1.

The Stars (29-35,75-59) trail the Mobile BayBears (36-26,78-53) 3-1 in their series. The series concludes Tuesday. Huntsville will have LHP Brent Suter (10-9, 4.09) on the mound. Mobile will send RHP Graham Godfrey (0-0, 0.00) to the hill. The game can be heard starting at 6:50 CDT on the internet only at wtkiradio.com.
