Standings check -- Nashville trails the hated Redbirds by a game; the Manatees swept last night, but the two teams Brevard is chasing both won their games; and the Rattlers tenuous Wild Card lead is down to one game. Plenty to follow down the stretch.

AUDIO: Jeff Hem discusses the Sounds, and in particular, the playoff picture, on Nashville Sports Talk Radio Sat. AM

The hosts never bring up the topic of a new affiliation for the Sounds with Jeff, which I find odd.

Hard to believe the Brewers have been with Nashville for ten years now, but the silence is sure deafening when it comes to yet another renewal.

I'll say this about Brewer draft picks going back to Jack Z; The Brewers sure do draft fine young men, Brett Lawrie and Matt LaPorta are about as douchey as Brewer prospects get and that ain't bad. The system continues to have drug related suspensions and while those are disappointing it's a far cry from the problems other teams have had with their prospects.

Justin Rocke mentioned your DSL post above during the 'Tees game Mass. Unfortunately, Tyler Wagner with probably his worst game of the year just like Taylor Williams yesterday. Where's Space Coast when you need it? I doubt all these fly balls would have been out there.

Chris explained on the Rattler Radio Blog tonight that this game is technically a four-game swing.

It's 9:40 PM, they're headed to the bottom of the 10th in Peoria tied at 7-7.

Listen here.

If Peoria walks off the Rattlers again for the eleventy-millionth time in recent years tonight, we will not be happy campers (never mind Mr. Mehring).

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Nashville Sounds defeated the Fresno Grizzlies, 6-2, in front of a packed house of 9,025 fans on Saturday evening at Greer Stadium to gain a split of the four-game series.

With the victory, the Sounds (73-61) pulled back into a tie for the division lead with Memphis, which lost to Sacramento.

Donovan Hand (4-7) won his third consecutive outing for the Sounds by working his first quality start of the year. The right-hander held Fresno to two runs on six hits over six innings while striking out a career-high seven batters.

Matt Clark paced the Nashville offense with a 2-for-4 evening that extended the slugger's longest hitting streak of the season to 13 games. He is batting .481 (25-for-52) over that stretch. Sean Halton also went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles for the Sounds.

Fresno jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Gary Brown and Juan Perez opened the contest with back-to-back doubles to plate the first run, and Chris Dominguez later added an RBI single.

The Sounds got a run back in the home half of the opening frame. Eugenio Velez drew a one-out walk, moved to second on a Clark single, and scored on a fielding error by Dominguez, the Fresno third baseman.

Nashville rallied to take a 3-2 lead with a trio of doubles in the fourth against Grizzlies starter Kelvin Marte. Halton and Hunter Morris led off the frame with consecutive two-baggers to knot the score, then Morris later scored when catcher Adam Weisenburger ripped a go-ahead double into the left field corner.

The Sounds added another run in the fifth when Velez singled and scored on Halton's two-out double off Marte.

Pinch-hitter Lucas May stretched the Nashville lead to 5-2 in the fifth when his one-out RBI single plated Irving Falu and chased Marte from the contest.

Marte (1-2) absorbed the loss for Fresno after giving up five runs on eight hits over 5 1/3 innings of work.

Logan Schafer (2-for-5) wrapped up the Nashville scoring in the eighth with a two-out RBI double off Fresno reliever Sandy Rosario.

Longtime fan favorite Tim Dillard closed out the Nashville victory with a scoreless ninth inning, the right-hander's first appearance with the Sounds this season. The veteran has now appeared for the Sounds in each of the past eight seasons, ranking 2nd in club history with 206 appearances.

The Sounds continue their final homestand of the year on Sunday, when they welcome the Sacramento River Cats (AAA-A's) in the 6:35 p.m. opener of a four-game series. Right-hander Michael Blazek (3-4, 4.14) will make the start for Nashville and face Sacramento right-hander Angel Castro (9-7, 4.19).

Nashville Boxscore

This was Donovan Hand's best performance since 7-26, both he and the Sounds needed this one. As noted Tim Dillard has now pitched in Nashville 8 different years...

Final: @Mobile 5, Huntsville 1

Stars Offense Fizzles In Loss

Steve Jarnicki, Huntsville Stars

Mobile, AL - The Mobile BayBears leveled up their five-game series with the Huntsville Stars with a 5-1 victory Saturday night at Hank Aaron Stadium in Mobile.

The Stars offense was only able to scratch across five hits. The only run the Stars scored was a solo home run by pitcher Eric Marzec in the third inning. Marzec’s first home run of his professional career (14th at-bat) tied the game at 1-1.

Mobile broke the 1-1 tie in the bottom of the fifth against Marzec (1-4). Tom Belza tripled down the right field line scoring Dallas Tarelton giving the BayBears a 2-1 lead.

The BayBears broke the game open in the sixth. With the bases loaded, Gearson Montilla recorded an RBI fielder’s choice. Former Stars right fielder Mitch Haniger also scored on a wild pitch against Marzec extending Mobile’s lead to 4-1.

Kevin Shackelford came in out of the Stars bullpen and allowed an RBI single to Tarelton.

Marzec went 5.1 innings and allowed four runs on six hits.

Braden Shipley (1-1), who allowed the homer to Marzec, picked up the win. Shipley worked five innings and allowed three hits.

The Stars (29-33,75-57) and the BayBears (34-26,76-53) are tied at 1-1 in their series. The series resumes Sunday. Huntsville will have LHP Jed Bradley (5-7, 4.28) on the mound. Mobile will send RHP Aaron Blair (4-1, 2.04) to the hill. The game can be heard starting at 4:50 CDT on the internet only at wtkiradio.com.

Huntsville Box Score

Maybe the most non-descript Huntsville box score I've had to break down this season - feel free to review, there's nothing really of note, certainly not in a positive sense, anyway...

It was interestingly unique, I'll say that...

Chris did pack enough energy right until the end to be worthy of a contest with a four-game standings swing.

Final: Brevard County 6, Clearwater 2

Homers derail 'Tees in 6-2 loss to Clearwater

Brevard County drops its first game at Bright House Field in 2014

By Justin Rocke / Brevard County Manatees

CLEARWATER, Fla. - A pair of two-run home runs in the fourth inning sparked the Clearwater Threshers to victory over the Brevard County Manatees, 6-2 on Saturday night at Bright House Field.

The Manatees (31-30 second half, 67-60 overall) held a 1-0 lead with one out in the fourth before starter Tyler Wagner (13-6, 1.91 ERA) ran into trouble.

Art Charles walked to put a runner on and Brian Pointer ripped a line drive to deep right field. The ball carried over the fence for Pointer's 15th long ball of the season and Clearwater (28-35, 45-86) took the lead, 2-1.

The Threshers were not done yet, as Harold Martinez followed the gopher ball with a laser off the bottom of the wall in center. The ball kicked away from Tyrone Taylor, which allowed Martinez to end up at third with a stand-up triple.

Chris Serritella, who hit a three-run home run in the first inning of game one on Friday, then put a charge into one to deep right. The 0-2 pitch carried well over the wall for Clearwater's second two-run shot of the frame. The blast was Serritella's sixth homer of the year and the Threshers had a 4-1 advantage.

Clearwater pushed across its final two runs off Wagner in the fifth. After Roman Quinn walked and Jesmuel Valentin singled to start the frame, J.P. Crawford ripped a line drive into right-center field. The ball split Taylor and Michael Reed and rolled to the wall. Both runners came across to score on the double by Crawford to extend the lead to 6-1.

Wagner's night ended after that inning. Statistically, the Las Vegas native had his worst start of the season. Wagner issued a season-worst six runs on season-high-tying eight hits in his five innings. He walked two and struck out seven. Tonight's outing was just the second start since June 3 in which Wagner allowed more than one earned run.

His counterpart, Kevin Walter (2-3, 4.61) worked through a shaky first inning to baffle the 'Tees over his final four innings. The right-hander, making just his third start of the year, allowed just one hit in his final four frames.

In total, Walter allowed one run on three hits, walked two and punched out three to record his second consecutive victory. As a starter this year, Walter is now 2-0 with a 1.93 ERA.

Brevard County pushed across a run against reliever Aaron Baker in the seventh, but could not pull any closer.

With one out, Alfredo Rodriguez was hit by a pitch and Mike Garza singled to center to put runners at first and second. After a Brandon Macias ground out, Nathan Orf grounded a single to center to score Rodriguez and move Garza to third to trim the lead to 6-2.

Ulises Joaquin then came out of the bullpen to close the door for the home team. The right-hander sat down seven of the eight batters he faced to finish off Clearwater's victory and his seventh Florida State League save of the year.

The 'Tees bats showed life in defeat, as they tallied eight hits on the evening. Garza led the offense with a 3-for-4 night, which included a double of Joaquin in the ninth. Arcia and Reed had multi-hit games, as well. Arcia went 2-for-3 with a walk and a run scored on Reed's RBI single to center in the first.

Scott Lieser pitched beautifully for the Manatees in relief. In three innings of work, the Minnesota native shutout the Threshers and allowed just two hits. He struck out one and did not walk a batter.

The second of Lieser's hits was erased on an incredible defensive play by Victor Roache. With one out in the bottom of the eighth, Pointer hit a sinking line drive into the left-center field gap. Roache ranged to his left and made a gorgeous head-long dive to make the catch. Charles, who doubled a batter earlier, was caught too far off second base. Roache staggered to his feet and made a strong throw onto Orf at second to double off the runner and end the inning.

Brevard County will go for the series victory against Clearwater tomorrow afternoon with first pitch at Bright House Field scheduled for 1:00 p.m. Southpaw Hobbs Johnson (11-8, 3.09) gets the start for the 'Tees against right-hander Miguel Nunez (5-7, 4.82).

Brevard County Box Score

It was a rare clunker for Tyler Wagner who took the loss for the Manatees after allowing six runs in five innings of work. Scott Lieser worked the final three innings without allowing a run. Mike Garza went 3-for-4 with a double. Orlando Arcia had two singles and a walk, and Michael Reed went 2-for-4.

Brevard County Play-By-Play

Haven't seen much of this from Wagner this season.

Clearwater Bottom of the 4th

J. P. Crawford strikes out swinging.

Art Charles walks.

Brian Pointer homers (15) on a fly ball to right field. Art Charles scores.

Harold Martinez triples (1) on a fly ball to center fielder Tyrone Taylor.

Chris Serritella homers (6) on a fly ball to right field. Harold Martinez scores.

Gabriel Lino strikes out swinging.

Herlis Rodriguez grounds out, second baseman Nathan Orf to first baseman Mike Garza.

Rattlers beat Chiefs 11-7 in wild 11-inning game

Wisconsin grabs control of Wild Card race

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

PEORIA, WI - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers picked up a wild, 11-7 victory in eleven innings over the Peoria Chiefs Saturday night at Dozer Park. The win gave the Timber Rattlers the season series - and with it the tie-breaker - over the Chiefs and pushed their lead in the second half Western Division Wild Card race back out to two games over the Chiefs. But, it was a long and twisting road with a few wrong turns in it before the Rattlers got to their destination.

Wisconsin (68-62 overall, 32-29 second half) grabbed the lead in the second inning. Clint Coulter reached on a leadoff single to start the inning. Taylor Brennan was next and fell behind 0-2. Brennan fouled off two more pitches before lining a no doubt home run to left-center to put the Rattlers up 2-0.

The Timber Rattlers added to their lead in the third inning. Paul Eshleman reached on an error and Chris McFarland doubled to right-center to put runners on second and third. Michael Ratterree knocked both runners in with a sharp single to left for a 4-0 advantage.

McFarland made it 5-0 with a two-out, RBI double to left that scored Jose Pena.

Wisconsin starting pitcher Zach Quintana faced the minimum without allowing a hit in his first three innings. But, the Chiefs charged back in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game on six straight hits.

CJ McElroy, Jr., Richy Pedroza, and Justin Ringo started the rally with singles to load the bases. Carson Kelly followed with a single to drive in McElroy. Rowan Wick was next and he doubled to right to score Pedroza and Ringo. Ronald Castillo tied the game with a two-run single to right.

Controversy turned up in the top of the fifth inning. The Timber Rattlers had runners at first and second with two outs and Sthervin Matos at the plate. Matos hooked a line drive to the left field corner that appeared to hit the foul pole below the yellow line. Plate umpire Ryan Doherty ruled it a fair ball for a two-run double for Matos.

Then, Peoria manager Joe Kruzel came out to argue and got Doherty to discuss the call with base umpire Richard Riley. After the consultation between the crew, the call was overturned and ruled a foul ball. Wisconsin manager Matt Erickson was not happy. Erickson, who was stationed at the third base coaching box, made his displeasure known to both umpires before he was ejected.

Play would eventually restart and Matos would reach when the Chiefs (67-62, 30-31) messed up a force play at second. But, the game would remain tied as the Rattlers left the bases loaded in the fifth.

Wisconsin went back in front in the top of the sixth inning. Eshleman and McFarland drew walks with one out. Ratterree lined a two-out single to center to score Eshleman and the Rattlers were up 6-5.

McFarland provided the Rattlers with some insurance in the eighth inning. Jose Pena doubled to start the inning. A sacrifice bunt by Eshleman moved Pena to third. McFarland hit a sacrifice fly deep enough to left field to knock in Pena with a run to make it 7-5.

But, the Chiefs rallied to tie the game in the bottom of the eighth. Ringo started the inning with a single off Chad Thompson. Wick reached on an infield single with one out. A throwing error on the play allowed Ringo to take third base. Castillo was next and he hit a ball to almost the exact spot that Matos did in the fifth inning. This ball was ruled a fair ball and an RBI double to score Ringo and send Wick to third base.

Chris Razo entered the game in place of Thompson and got Luis Perez to send a grounder to third. Wick took off for home and was out on a throw from Matos, but Castillo took third on the play. The next pitch from Razo was wild and Castillo scored to tie the game 7-7.

Wisconsin went back in front in the top of the eleventh and by the time the inning was over, Kruzel had been ejected, too.

Coulter started the inning with a double off the top of the wall in left field near the foul pole again. Brennan was next and hit a slow grounder to short for an infield single. Coulter gambled that he could make it to third and got in when Medina dropped the throw on a close play. Denson delivered Coulter across the plate with a line single to left and Wisconsin was up 8-7.

Johnny Davis chopped a single to left as the Chiefs charged for a bunt and that loaded the bases. Pena hit a fly ball to left-center that was deep enough for Brennan to score, Denson to take third, and Davis to move to second. Eshleman was next and he lined a single to right on an 0-2 pitch to score Denson for a 10-7 lead.

The play that set Kruzel off was a grounder to second baseman Michael Schulze with the infield in to try and get Davis at the plate. McFarland's high bouncer hit right at Schulze, who came home with the throw. But, the throw was high and Davis got in under the tag with a head-first dive and Wisconsin was up 11-7.

Kruzel disagreed. He argued until he was ejected and then kicked dirt on home plate before leaving the field.

Razo, who had pitched a scoreless ninth and a scoreless tenth, got the first out of the eleventh. Then, Medina singled and Schulze reached on an error to bring McElroy back to the plate.

The speedy leadoff hitter for the Chiefs hit a hard, one-hopper to Brennan at third. He fielded it cleanly and threw a strike to McFarland at second for the out on Schulze. McFarland turned a fired to Denson at first to beat McElroy for the game-ending, around-the-horn double play.

The Timber Rattlers return to Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium on Sunday to begin their final homestand of the regular season. Game one of the homestand is against the Beloit Snappers at 5:05pm. Preston Gainey (5-7, 4.22) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Matt Stalcup (5-4, 4.02) is set to go for the Snappers.

Wisconsin Boxscore

Zach Quintana reminds me of Dave Bush a little bit in that he'll be cruising along and then he loses the ability to locate and out pops a huge crooked number... the 4th was just awful.

Sthervin Matos had another costly error and was replaced by David Denson who went in at 1st and slid Brennan over to 3rd. Angel Ortega committed his 35 error in the 11th... for reference Orlando Arcia had 23 in 2013 and Yadiel Rivera 22 in 2012. Steve Wendt mentioned a couple of times last year that the Brewers thought Ortega was the best defender of that trio but Chris has made no such claim when I was listening this season.

Chris McFarland (2-4,2 2B, 2 BB), Michael Ratterree (3-6), Clint Coulter (2-5,2B,BB), Taylor Brennan (3-5,HR,BB), Jose Pena (2-5,2B), and Paul Eshleman (2-4,BB) all had multi-hit games as the Rattlers pounded out 17 hits in this 11 inning game.

Maryvale Box Score

Just a humungous night for 18-year-old Maryland high school 4th rounder LF Troy Stokes, 4-for-5 with a triple, four RBI, and four runs scored - Stokes likely projects as a CF down the road. Catcher Leudi Otano contributed to Stokes' big night batting behind him (3-for-4 with a walk, a home run shy of a cycle).

DH Elvis Rubio stayed in to run the bases, but did not return for his next at-bat after an HBP in the 4th.

RF Monte Harrison and 1B Juan Ortiz had two singles apiece, with Harrison adding a walk and Ortiz a sacrifice fly. Ortiz, a soon-to-be 20-year-old LH bat, has had a solid season. Harrison (29-for-30) stole two more bases and leads the league by seven in that category.

Maryvale Game Log

RHP's Jordan Yamamoto and Caleb Smith followed up RHP Angel Ventura (3 IP, 3 R) with a combined three innings of scoreless relief.
