Final: Brevard County 1, Tampa 11

Manatees four-game win streak ends in 11-1 loss

Brevard County stays three games back of first with Daytona's defeat

TAMPA, Fla. - The Brevard County Manatees four-game winning streak came to an end, as the Tampa Yankees came out on top with an 11-1 victory at George M. Steinbrenner Field on Wednesday night.

Tampa's (31-28 second half, 64-65 overall) bats, which collected 11 hits in the first two games of the series against Brevard County (29-28, 65-58) at Space Coast Stadium, exploded for 11 runs on 18 hits.

After both teams put up zeroes in the first, the Yankees pieced together some timely hitting. Jose Rosario walked and Ericson Leonora singled to start the attack for Tampa in the second. With runners at first and second, Mike Ford then hit a chopping ball to first base.

Initially looking like a possible double play, the ball took a bizarre hop off the infield dirt before caroming off Manatees first baseman Garrett Cooper's shoulder. As the ball rolled towards the outfield, Rosario hustled to score all the way from second to give the Yankees the lead, 1-0.

A two-out base knock in the third brought home another run for Tampa. Manatees starter Mike Strong (2-2, 2.67 ERA) sandwiched an Aaron Judge double around a pair of strikeouts, but could not emerge unscathed. Leonora smacked a base-hit through the hole on the left side to score Judge and make it 2-0, Yankees. However, the inning would end there, as Leonora was gunned down trying to advance to second on the relay throw to the plate.

Tampa then used the long ball to pad its advantage the rest of the way. Reymond Nunez, Mark Payton and Aaron Judge all went deep to bring home seven of the Yankees final nine runs.

Judge's blast in the eighth, which made it 11-1, was a titanic shot. The Yankees' third first-round pick from 2013, hammered a pitch from Brevard County reliever Trevor Seidenberger over the massive jumbotron in left for a three-run home run. Judge's clout was his eighth long ball with Tampa and 17th total.

Payton had a banner night, as well. The 2014 draftee out of Texas went 4-for-4 with a walk and a two-run homer to set a career-high in hits and total bases - seven - in a single game.

The Yankees pushed across their other two runs on a wild pitch in the seventh and an RBI single by Eric Jagielo in the eighth.

Strong would end up taking his first loss since he pitched in relief on June 6 against Bradenton. The southpaw allowed the first four Yankee runs on a career-high 10 hits in five innings. Strong also walked two and punched out six.

Brevard County's offense could not cash in despite having their fair share of opportunities. The Manatees recorded six hits and put at least one runner in scoring position in each of the first five innings, but Yankee starter Caleb Smith (4-1, 4.45) held them without a run.

The 'Tees tallied their only run in the sixth, once Smith was removed from the ballgame. The Sam Houston State alum allowed two other baserunners on walks and struck out five in the victory.

Trailing 4-0, Brevard County had a chance to tie the game against reliever Philip Walby in that sixth inning, but was unable to do so. With the bases loaded and one out, Parker Berberet broke up the shutout with a run-scoring single to left, but that was all the 'Tees would get. Walby struck out Brandon Macias and forced Nathan Orf to ground into an inning-ending fielder's choice to quell the rally.

The Manatees finished the night with nine hits, but left 12 runners on-base. The team's hitting struggles with runners in scoring position continued, as the team went 1-for-12 in that situation on Wednesday night.

Brevard was led by Berberet, Victor Roache and Orlando Arcia, all three of which had multi-hit nights. Alfredo Rodriguez and Tyrone Taylor picked up base-knocks as well to extend their hitting streaks to six and eight games, respectively.

The Manatees and Yankees will wrap up their season series tomorrow night at 7 p.m. Jorge Lopez (9-8, 3.86) will get the start and looks to become the third Brevard County pitcher to reach double-digits in wins. He will be opposed by right-hander Brett Gerritse (4-7, 3.97).

Brevard County Box Score

Mike Strong started and took the loss after giving up four runs in five innings. Victor Roache and Orlando Arcia each went 2-for-4 with a double while Parker Berberet added two hits and Michael Reed singled and drew a pair of walks.

Salas sails Rattlers to 8-3 win at Clinton

Coulter drives in three as Wisconsin wins second straight game

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

CLINTON, IA - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers needed a strong start from Javier Salas on Wednesday night against the Clinton LumberKings. The got one as the Rattlers beat Clinton 8-3 at Ashford University Field. Salas set new single game highs as a professional for innings pitched and strikeouts to help the Rattlers get a much needed victory in their playoff push.

The Timber Rattlers (67-60 overall, 31-27 second half) scored first, something they had not done in their previous six games. Omar Garcia started the game with a single and was sacrificed to second on a bunt by Chris McFarland. Michael Ratterree followed with a single to put runners at the corners. David Denson hit a high chopper to first off home plate. Denson was out at first, but the high bounce allowed Garcia to score and Ratterree to take second. Clint Coulter followed with a line drive double to the wall in left to drive in Ratterree for a 2-0 lead.

Wisconsin doubled their lead with two runs in the top of the second. Rafael Neda walked and Angel Ortega reached on a bunt single. Jose Pena moved the runners into scoring position. Then, Garcia singled to score Neda. An errant pickoff throw to by Jose Flores allowed Ortega to score for the 4-0 advantage.

The Rattlers added a run in the top of the third as Denson and Coulter both singled to start the inning. Flores was injured on a pitch to Matos and left the game. Reliever Ricardo Pereira took over and Matos bunted both runners into scoring position. Neda hit a fly ball to left that was deep enough to score Denson for a sacrifice fly and a 5-0 lead.

Clinton (56-70, 26-32) got to Salas in the bottom of the third. Luis Caballero reached on a double with one out. Brett Thomas singled with two outs to knock in Caballero to make it 5-1.

But, the Rattlers came back with a run in the fifth. Ratterree started the inning with a double and went to third on a grounder to the right side by Denson. The LumberKings brought the infield in with Coulter at the plate and Caballero made a diving stop at short on a hard grounder. However, Caballero's only play was to first as Ratterree scored and Wisconsin was up 6-1.

That run in the third inning was the only run the LumberKings would get off Salas in the game. The right-hander, a tenth round pick of the Milwaukee Brewers in the 2014 draft out of the University of Miami, allowed five hits, walked one, and struck out six to earn his first professional win.

Clinton would score twice in the bottom of the eighth inning against Chris Razo, who walked the first two batters of the inning before giving up a two-out, two-run double to Joe DeCarlo.

The Rattlers tacked on a couple of runs in the top of the ninth. McFarland drove in Pena with a single after Garcia had bunted Pena to third with Wisconsin's fourth sacrifice bunt of the night. Coulter earned his third RBI of the evening with a two-out single to knock in McFarland.

Razo pitched a 1-2-3 bottom of the ninth to close out Clinton.

In the second half Western Division Wild Card chase, the Rattlers maintained their three game lead over the Peoria Chiefs and their four game lead over the Quad Cities River Bandits. Both the Chiefs and the River Bandits won on Wednesday night. Wisconsin pushed the LumberKings five games back in the Wild Card standings with twelve games to play.

The Timber Rattlers continue their road trip with game one of a huge series with playoff implications at Peoria on Thursday night. Tristan Archer (6-5, 3.67) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Peoria has named Rob Kaminsky (6-2, 1.83) as their starting pitcher. Game time is 6:30pm at Dozer Park. Tune in for the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM or IHeartRadio starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 6:10pm.

Wisconsin Boxscore

So Mehring beat me to the punch, with the sacrifices in today's game I was going post "#bunttowin", predictably he read my mind and busted that out in defense of Erickson during the broadcast. Dammit man! But I posted it anyway cause that's the way I am. Congrats to Javier Salas on his best day as a professional, hopefully even better days are ahead.

Chris was critical of Sthervin Matos's defense after his miscue in today's game which was originally scored a single and an error, but apparently changed to a double after the game. Mehring described the play as Matos going for the highlight reel play on one of the poorer infields in the ML and having it backfire as he tried to barehead a ball heading down line and whiffed it. Chris went to say something to the effect that "Matos offensive abilities will help the club and hopefully offset his defense".

The Rattlers dropped double digit hits for the second consecutive day but only Omar Garcia (2-4) and Clint Coulter (3-5,2B) had multi-hit games, though Rafael Neda and Matos were the only T-Rats in the line-up without a hit.

David Denson's CS was on the backside of a double steal.

Helena game suspended in Great Falls

By Troy Shockley / Helena Independent Record

The Helena Brewers got a day off Tuesday, and then wound up only playing a handful of innings Wednesday.

Opening a home-and-home series with Great Falls on Wednesday, the Brewers found themselves trailing 4-0 in the bottom of the third inning. That's when the skies above Centene Stadium opened and soaked the field, forcing the contest to be suspended. The two teams will play on Thursday as scheduled -- and then will play two games at Helena's Kindrick Legion Field on Friday and Saturday -- but will work the rest of Wednesday's game into a doubleheader Aug. 28.

Hunter Jones did most of the damage in the partial game, using a two-out, three-run homer to put the Voyagers up 3-0 at the end of two. Dillon Haupt tacked on another run with an RBI single in the third.

Final: AZL Indians 4, @AZL Brewers 2

Maryvale Box Score

20-year-old RHP Milton Gomez pitched six innings of one-run relief -- his WHIP is 1.51, still rough, you can sort the WHIP column on the A-Crew's stat page to see who has performed well in that category (hello, Gian Rizzo in his still-small sample, Rizzo has thrown about half the innings he has the past three seasons, as he mainly remains an enigma wrapped in a riddle).

Brewers only mustered three singles and one walk while fanning ten times. Other than speed, this offensive squad has been just that, offensive. Here's the AZL team sortable stat page for hitting, the Maryvale-bunch has the worst OPS by far at a miserable .612.

Maryvale Game Log

All three hits came in one inning - lots of 1-2-3 frames in the game log:

STARS HOLD OFF JACKSON RALLY

Steve Jarnicki, Huntsville Stars

Huntsville, AL - The Huntsville Stars built a 4-0 lead and had to hang on late to defeat the Jackson Generals 6-4 Wednesday night at Joe Davis Stadium. With the win, the Stars have officially won the series heading into the series finale tomorrow night.

Huntsville starter Austin Ross (1-2) earned his first Double-A win of his career. Ross pitched five innings and allowed two runs on nine hits. The righty stranded nine men during his time on the mound.

The Stars scored four runs in the bottom of the third inning against Jackson starter Stephen Landazuri (6-5).

Nick Shaw gave the Stars a 1-0 lead on a sacrifice fly scoring Nick Ramirez. Hunter Morris produced an RBI single that went into right field scoring Yadiel Rivera making it 2-0. Shawn Zarraga capped off the four-run third with a two-run single into right field scoring Josh Fellhauer and Morris.

Landazuri, who took the loss, went just 2.2 innings and allowed four runs on two hits with four walks.

The Generals got on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth inning against Ross. Tyler Marlette and Patrick Brady hit back to back home runs cutting the lead in half to 4-2.

The Stars got those two runs back in their next at bat in the bottom of the fourth. Kentrail Davis and Fellhauer each had RBI singles extending the lead to 6-2.

The Stars took a 6-2 lead going into the ninth inning. With Manny Barreda pitching and one out, he hit Jabari Blash with a pitch. The next batter, Jordy Lara, made Barreda pay as he launched a two-run homer to left center making it 6-4.

After Dario Pizzano singled, David Goforth was summoned out of the Stars bullpen. Goforth was greeted by a Dan Paolini single.

With the tying runners on base and with one out, Goforth struck out Marlette. Goforth then got pinch hitter Patrick Kivlehan to line out to left field to end the game.

Goforth earned his 26th save of the year, the most in the Southern League.

The Stars (28-31,74-55) lead Jackson (26-33,57-71) 3-1 in their five game series. The series concludes Thursday night with LHP Brent Suter (10-8, 4.19) on the mound for Huntsville.
