Cougars pull away late for 9-0 win over Rattlers

Wisconsin held to two hits in game one of twinbill

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

GRAND CHUTE, WI - Daury Torrez is now 4-0 in four starts against the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers. The right-hander out of the Dominican Republic tossed five scoreless innings and allowed one hit as the Kane County Cougars defeated the Rattlers 9-0 at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium.

Kane County (79-45 overall, 34-20 second half) had Shawon Dunston, Jr. at first and Carlos Penalver at third with one out in the top of the third inning, but catcher Clint Coulter picked Penalver off third for the second out. Then, Mark Zagunis drew a walk to keep the inning alive. Dunston and Zagunis pulled a double steal on the first pitch to Victor Caratini and Dunston would score when Coulter's throw to third sailed into left field. Caratini drove in Zagunis with a single to center and the Cougars were up 2-0.

Wisconsin (65-58, 29-25) could do little against Daury Torrez. Michael Ratterree had a two out single in the first inning and that was the lone Timber Rattlers hit off Torrez, who walked two, and struck out three to earn his eleventh win of the season..

Wei-Chung Wang made the start for the Timber Rattlers and allowed two runs on six hits over 4-1/3 innings. He walked two and struck out four in the game.

Brandon Moore, who was making his Timber Rattlers debut, took over for Wang in the fifth inning and kept Kane County in check until the seventh. Jeffrey Baez started the inning with a solo home run. A walk and a double put runners at second and third with no outs. Moore got the first out on a grounder to second that held the runners at second and third before walking Zagunis intentionally to load the bases and set up an inning-ending double play.

Caratini spoiled the strategy with a two run single to make the score 5-0.

Moore looked like he was headed out of the inning, but a chopper to short was misplayed for an error to allow another run to score and that was all for Moore.

Harvey Martin took over on the hill and gave up an RBI single to Jacob Rogers and an RBI double to Jeimer Candelario. A walk to Baez reloaded the bases. Daniel Lockhart knocked in the final run of the inning with a single and Kane County was up 7-0.

Taylor Brennan singled off David Garner with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning to account for Wisconsin's second hit of the game.

The loss was the third in a row for the Rattlers and the sixth time they have been shutout this season. Kane County has shut Wisconsin out three times this season, twice when Torrez was the starting pitcher.

HOME RUN:

KC:

Jeffrey Baez (2nd, 0 on in 7th off Brandon Moore, 0 out)

WP: Daury Torrez (11-5)

LP: Wei-Chung Wang (0-2)

SAVE: David Garner (1)

TIME: 2:25

Wisconsin Game 1 Boxscore

Well Wei-Chung Wang was very hittable but helped himself with a pickoff in the first and then Coulter had the pickoff mentioned above. I would guess he's having similar location issues as he did when he was pitching in MLB. Regardless he has a couple of more weeks to make some progress in Wisconsin before Milwaukee has to recall him. Brandon Moore had a debut to forget and Harvey Martin did what he's done most of the year.

Sounds Halted By Isotopes, 4-2

Nashville's Schafer Extends Hitting Streak To 14 Games

Nashville Sounds

http://www.milb.com/assets/images/9/7/8/82650978/cuts/Logan_Schafer_627_Large_f8i7bkmz_1ywidow6.jpg

Despite achieving double-digit hits for the second consecutive game, the Nashville Sounds (69-59) could not muster enough runs in a 4-2 defeat to the Albuquerque Isotopes (57-71) Sunday afternoon at Isotopes Park.

Eight different Sounds recorded hits in the contest including outfielder Logan Schafer, who extended his hitting streak to 14 games with a single in the top of the third. He finished the game going 2-for-5 and is hitting .362 during his streak.

The 'Topes got to Sounds starter Jay Jackson in the bottom of the third when Clint Robinson and Walter Ibarra both homered to put Albuquerque ahead 3-0. The Isotopes then added another run in the bottom of the third when Robinson knocked in another run on a groundout with the bases loaded.

Jackson (0-2) went five innings for his longest start since joining the Sounds, allowing four earned runs on six hits while striking out six.

Nashville got on the board in the bottom of the fifth when Eugenio Velez scored Adam Weisenburger with a two-out double to cut the deficit to 4-1. Velez hit 3-for-5 on the afternoon, giving him multiple hits in five of his last seven games and 37 total times in 2014.

The score would remain until the top of the eighth when Hector Gomez scored Pete Orr on an RBI double with two outs. Gomez now has 20 RBIs and 18 extra base hits in his last 40 games.

Reliever Alfredo Figaro kept the Sounds in the game with two scoreless innings out of the bullpen and was followed by Billy Buckner, who retired the side while striking out two in his Sounds debut.

The Sounds will look to return to the win column on Monday when RHP Donovan Hand (2-7, 5.40) takes to the bump against Albuquerque RHP Barry Enright (4-9, 5.58). First pitch is scheduled for 7:35 p.m., and Jeff Hem will have the call on 102.5 The Fan.

Rattlers drop game two 3-0 to Kane County

Cougars sweep doubleheader from Wisconsin

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattler

GRAND CHUTE, WI - The Kane County Cougars completed a doubleheader sweep of the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium with a 3-0 victory in the nightcap. Ben Wells and two relievers combined on the shutout to send the Rattlers to their fourth straight loss.

Kane County (80-45 overall, 35-20 second half) loaded the bases with no outs in the second inning against Wisconsin starting pitcher Clint Terry. Cael Brockmeyer and Jacob Rogers drew walks to start the inning and Jeimer Candelario singled to load the base. Terry would get Jeffrey Baez to ground into a 5-4-3 double play for two outs, but Brockmeyer scored on the play for a 1-0 lead.

Wisconsin (65-59, 29-26) had an opportunity against Wells in the fourth inning. David Denson doubled to start the inning and Clint Coulter reached on an error. Omar Garcia sacrificed both runners into scoring position. But, Wells escaped with a grounder to third and a strikeout.

The Rattlers also got the leadoff batter on base in the fifth inning against Wells, but could not score. Wells allowed three hits in five shutout innings before turning the game over to the bullpen.

Michael Wagner struck out the first two Wisconsin batters he faced in the bottom of the sixth inning before allowing singles to Coulter and Garcia. Wagner kept the shutout going with a foul pop.

Terry kept the score at 1-0 through six innings. He went back out for the top of the seventh and got the first two outs. Then, Jeffery Baez hit a 1-1 pitch from Terry to left for a home run and a 2-0 lead. Baez had also homered in the seventh inning of the first game of the doubleheader on Sunday.

That was all for Terry, who pitched 6-2/3 innings for his longest outing as a professional.

The Cougars added another run in the seventh inning. Carlos Penalver singled against reliever Chris Razo, stole second, and went to third on a throwing error. Trey Martin drew a walk to put runners at the corners. Razo would step off the rubber, bluff a throw to first, and tried to pick Penalver off third. But, the throw was wild and Penalver scored to make it 3-0.

Kane County sent Francisco Carrillo out for the bottom of the seventh and he walked Angel Ortega to start the inning. Taylor Brennan would draw a walk with one out to bring the tying run to the plate, but Carrillo wrapped the game with a pair of strikeouts.

The Rattlers were shutout in game one of the doubleheader by a score of 9-0 and have not scored in 18-2/3 innings.

Kane County is already in the Midwest League playoffs as the first half Western Division champions. In the second half divisional playoff race, Wisconsin has fallen five games off the pace set by the Cedar Rapids Kernels for the top spot. The Kernels have won six straight while the Timber Rattlers have lost four in a row. In the wild card race, Wisconsin still leads the Peoria Chiefs by two games and the Quad Cities River Bandits by three games. The Clinton LumberKings have won two in a row to climb to within four games of the Rattlers. There are fifteen games remaining in the regular season.

The Timber Rattlers begin a six-game road trip on Monday night with a game at Clinton. Chad Thompson (2-1, 2.87) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Clinton plans to send Eddie Diaz (4-7, 3.55) to the mound. Game time is 6:30pm at Ashford University Field. Catch all the action on AM1280, WNAM or IHeartRadio starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 6:10pm.

HOME RUN:

KC:

Jeffrey Baez (3rd, 0 on in 7th inning off Clint Terry, 2 out)

WP: Ben Wells (2-0)

LP: Clint Terry (3-3)

SAVE: Francisco Carrillo (3)

TIME: 2:16

ATTN: 6,860

Wisconsin Game 2 Boxscore

Getting swept by the Cubs gets under my skin like none other... especially in the heat of the playoff chase, this team is slumping at the wrong time.

Clint Terry was strong through his 6.2 innings, Chris Razo struggled to finish the game.

Each team had just 5 hits but Kane County managed to make theirs count, unfortunately the TRats only managed 7 total hits in the 14 innings played today. David Denson did well in game 2 going 1-2 with a double and a walk.

After errors in both games today Rattler Cs now have 19 errors (4 Neda, 5 Eshleman, 10 Coulter) and 24 passed balls (5 Neda, 6 Eshleman, 13 Coulter) on the season. That's currently the 4th worst total in the Midwest League PB department, there isn't an easy way to separate out C errors but the Rattlers are also 4th worst as a team in that category with 150 total.

On a positive note the TRats have the 6th best attendance in the league at 85,349 coming into today's action.

Final: Brevard County 3, Dunedin 2

With the Manatees heading back to Viera from Dunedin I'm anticipating their game story won't be posted until late tonight or tomorrow morning. So in the meantime, here's the Dunedin version. I'll update when Brevard has their story posted.

Dunedin, FL - For the fifth-consecutive start, LHP Matt Boyd held the opposition to less than three earned runs, but the Blue Jays (27-29, 73-52) fell to 0-5 in those stellar starts with a 3-2 loss to the Brevard County Manatees (27-27, 63-57) on Sunday at Florida Auto Exchange Stadium.

Boyd allowed a run-scoring double play in the third inning, but otherwise kept the Manatees off the board through five strong innings on five hits with one walk and two strikeouts.

LHP Chad Girodo (BS, 5)(L, 6-3) was summoned for the sixth with a 2-1 lead, and surrendered a pair of RBI doubles to give Brevard County its decisive 3-2 advantage. Victor Roache lined one to left-center to tie the game, and Parker Berberet split the gap in right-center to take the lead.

RHP Will Browning limited the damage with 2.1 one-hit innings with no walks and three strikeouts, and RHP Danny Barnes pitched a 1-2-3 ninth, his third-consecutive perfect inning since returning from the disabled list last week.

Dunedin took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on a double from CF Dwight Smith, Jr. He tucked a sharp grounder inside first base to score 2B Christian Lopes, who had reached second on a two-base throwing error by shortstop Orlando Arcia.

The Manatees tied the game at 1-1 in the third when Nathan Orf came home from third on a double play off the bat of Tyrone Taylor, but Dunedin quickly answered when 1B L.B. Dantzler drilled a solo homer over the right-field fence in the bottom of the fourth.

Manatees starter Taylor Williams (W, 1-1) surrendered just one earned run in seven impressive innings on six hits with no walks and nine strikeouts. RHP Tyler Spurlin (H, 1) loaded the bases in the eighth on two walks and a single, but LHP Stephen Peterson (S, 4) recorded the final four outs of the ballgame in consecutive order to keep Dunedin at bay.

Dantzler and RF Marcus Knecht both recorded multi hit games, while SS Shane Opitz had his nine-game hitting streak snapped with an 0-for-3, BB stat line.

The Blue Jays will host the Lakeland Flying Tigers in a four-game series starting on Monday with RHP Jesse Hernandez (6-9, 5.11 ERA) taking on RHP Edgar De La Rosa (7-9, 2.98 ERA).

Brevard County Box Score

The Manatees scored two runs in the sixth to defeat Dunedin 3-2. Taylor Williams worked seven innings, giving up just one earned run to notch the victory and Stephen Peterson earned the save. Michael Reed had two hits and a walk in four plate appearances. Alfredo Rodriguez also added two hits and Nathan Orf and Parker Berberet each chipped in a double.

Brevard County Play-By-Play

Brevard took the lead with two in the sixth. Luckily Parker Berberet getting pegged at the plate to end the inning turned out not to cost the Manatees.

Final: Ogden 3, Helena 2

Raptors squeak out 3-2 win

By Dustin Daniel / Helena Brewers

The Ogden Raptors (10-10) squeaked out a 3-2 win on Sunday over the Helena Brewers (9-12) at Kindrick Field.

Devin Williams (4-7) got the start for Helena, getting the short stick in another pitcher's duel. Williams would give up three runs in five innings, tying a season-high for the righty with seven strikeouts.

All three Raptors runs came in the third on four hits. Billy Bereszniewicz ripped an RBI triple to lead the way for Ogden in the frame. He would go 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.

After the third, it was pitching that took over. The Brewers would allow just one hit the rest of the way, an infield single for Bereszniewicz on a hard bunt to second.

Helena would mount a rally in the bottom of the ninth, but came up just short. Dionis Hinijosa led off the inning with a double and would later score on an RBI single from Tucker Neuhaus. With Eric Williams at second representing the tying run, Brock Stewart would record a strikeout to end the game and pick up his third save of the season.

The Brewers and the Raptors will face off in the finale of their four-game series Monday at Kindrick Field. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.

Helena Box Score

Following a seven strike out effort tonight, Devin Williams now with 51 strike outs on the season in 53.1 innings pitched. With his RBI single in the 9th, Tucker Neuhaus continues his improvement at the plate. Neuhaus is now hitting .315 BA in his last 15 games (17-for-54).

Guess Shawn Zarraga was created to mash AA pitching, 3-for-4 here for a .372/.476/.475 line in 183 at-bats.

AUDIO via Jeff Hem's blog --

"Today’s interview is with Sounds reliever Brent Leach, a former Isotope who came up with the Dodgers and for whom he made his major league debut in ’09. He pitched in 38 games that season for L.A. and was called up from Double-A, to that point having never pitched at Triple-A. Leach discusses some memories of his big league time, including facing Jim Thome, getting to hear the great Vin Scully announce his name on a broadcast and being the only lefty in the Dodgers’ bullpen for a while, which has been the case for him most of this season with the Sounds. Leach also discusses his outstanding pick-off move, which he used last night for his 10th pick-off of the season."

Brewers’ ninth-inning rally not enough to catch Raptors

By Curt Synness / Helena Independent Record

The Helena Brewers’ ninth-inning rally came up one run short on Sunday, as the Ogden Raptors edged the Brewers 3-2 in the third contest of a four-game series.

The Brewers trailed Ogden 3-1 going into their half of the ninth at Kindrick Legion Field.

After Dionis Hinojosa led off the bottom of the frame with a double, Eric Williams’ walk put Brewers on first and second with none out.

But the next two men were retired on a popped-up bunt and a strikeout before a single by Tucker Neuhaus scored Hinojosa. That left Helena with the tying run on second.

But it wasn’t to be, as Ogden reliever Brock Stewart fanned Mitch Meyer to end the game.

The Brewers actually outhit the Utah club 7-5, and Helena pitching shut out the Raptors for eight of the nine innings. But Ogden used a three-run third frame that eventually made the difference.

The visitors scored all three runs after two outs were recorded — on an RBI-triple by Billy Bereszniewicz, Cody Bellinger’s single and stolen base, and the game-winning RBI single by Colin Herrig.

Helena got on the board in the third with its first run when Tucker Neuhaus’ ground ball fielder’s choice brought home Williams.

But the local club had another runner gunned down at the plate on the play trying to score, when Franscisco Castillo was tagged out by Ogden catcher Hunter Redman on a throw from shortstop Ivan Vela.

Neuhaus finished with a pair of RBIs. Teammate Alan Sharkey chipped in with a double.

Ogden used five pitchers on the day, with middle reliever Frances Martinez collecting the win.

Helena starter Devin Williams went five innings in the loss, giving up three runs and four hits while striking out seven. Brew-crew relievers Brandon Woodruff and Donnie Hissa shut out the visitors over the final four stanzas.

The Brewers won the first two games of the series, and will host the Raptors again tonight in the finale.

NOTE: Helena manager Tony Diggs returned to the team Sunday after a four-game absence because of to a death in the family, but chose to coach from the first base coaching box while hitting coach Jason Dubois again manned the third-base side.

DUNEDIN, Fla. - A pair of clutch doubles in the sixth inning, coupled with a strong pitching performance by starter Taylor Williams lifted the Brevard County Manatees past the Dunedin Blue Jays on Sunday night at Florida Auto Exchange Stadium, 3-2.

Brevard County (27-27 second half, 63-57 overall) trailed 2-1 at the start of the sixth, but a couple of big extra-base hits turned the tides. After a one-out single by Michael Reed against Jays reliever Chad Girodo, Victor Roache banged a line drive double off the left field wall to score Reed and tie the game, 2-2.

Girodo (6-3, 2.45 ERA) struck out the next man he faced and was one out from escaping the inning with the score still tied. Parker Berberet, however, had other ideas. The 'Tees catcher hit a tailing fly ball to right-center field that dropped just out of the reach of D-Jays centerfielder Dwight Smith, Jr. Berberet cruised into second and Roache scored to give Brevard a 3-2 lead.

The Manatees' lead could have been larger if not for a great throw by Smith. After Berberet's go-ahead double, the Blue Jays (27-29, 73-52) went to the bullpen and brought in right-hander Wil Browning. The first man Browning faced was Alfredo Rodriguez and he grounded a single up the middle. Berberet tried to score from second, but Smith gunned him down at home to end the inning.

Williams (1-1, 1.80 ERA) was the story on the hill for the Manatees. In his third start since being promoted from Class-A Wisconsin, the right-hander struck out nine men over seven innings. Williams gave up two runs (one earned) on six hits and did not issue a walk.

Despite Williams' strong start, Brevard County had to battle back twice against the D-Jays. In the first inning, a throwing error by shortstop Orlando Arcia put Dunedin leadoff hitter Christian Lopes on second base. Smith later doubled him home to give the Jays an early 1-0 advantage.

The 'Tees came back to tie the game in the third on a double play ball that scored Nathan Orf, but Dunedin answered and regained the lead in the bottom of the fourth. With two outs and nobody on, L.B. Dantzler sent a Williams offering over the right field wall for a solo home run that put the Jays back on top, 2-1.

After Roache and Berberet helped the Manatees climb back, the Jays gave the Manatees a scare in the eighth inning. In his first inning of relief, Tyler Spurlin loaded the bases with two outs on a single and a pair of walks.

With the 'Tees clinging to a one-run lead, Stephen Peterson came in from the bullpen to get Brevard out of the jam. The lefty did just that, as he struck out Dantzler to end the inning and preserve the lead. Peterson then came back out for the ninth and set the Jays down in order for his fourth save of the season.

After taking the final two games of the series, the Manatees captured two out of three games from Dunedin. The 'Tees return home on Monday for a pair of games against the Tampa Yankees. First pitch at Space Coast Stadium is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. Tyler Wagner (12-5, 1.68 ERA) is set to start for Brevard against Miguel Sulbaran (3-3, 3.08 ERA).
