Earlier from Helena --

Helena Brewers right fielder Elvis Rubio has been out since getting hurt while sliding into second base on July 19. Diggs said Rubio has been rehabbing the injury at the team’s facility in Maryvale, Arizona, and the team believes it’s possible he’ll be back with Helena as soon as next week’s homestand.

Rubio finally debuts with Maryvale tonight.

Smokies Run Away From Stars Late

Steve Jarnicki, Huntsville Stars

Kodak, TN - The Tennessee Smokies erupted late against the Huntsville Stars bullpen and ran away with a 12-5 win Saturday night at Smokies Park. The Smokies claimed four out of five from the Stars.

The Stars were leading 5-4 with two outs in the bottom of the seventh. Stars reliever Tim Dillard (5-3) then gave up a double to Addison Russell. Christian Villanueva followed with a game tying RBI single into left knotting the game at 5-5.

The Smokies took over for good in the bottom of the eighth. With the bases loaded and one out, Dillard walked pinch hitter Lars Anderson giving the Smokies a 6-5 lead.

David Goforth then came into the game out of the Stars bullpen. Jae Hoon Ha greeted him with a two-run double down the right field line making it 8-5.

Albert Almora followed with a two-run double adding to the Smokies 10-5 lead.

The Smokies were not finished. Russell added an RBI single against Goforth and Taylor Davis capped off the seven-run eighth with an RBI single.

Dillard, who suffered the loss out of the Stars bullpen, went 1.1 innings and allowed five runs on three hits.

The Stars only lead of the game was after Hector Giminez hit a three-run homer in the top of the sixth giving the Stars a 5-4 lead.

Erik Komatsu also homered in the Stars loss. It was a solo shot in the second inning, his second of the season.

Josh Prince led the Stars offense with three hits. The Stars, who have lost four in a row, completed their ten game roadtrip with a 5-5 record.

The Stars (25-30, 71-54) return to Huntsville Sunday to begin a series with the Jackson Generals, the Double-A Affiliate of the Seattle Mariners. RHP Drew Gagnon (10-6, 3.70) will take the mound for Huntsville. Jackson will send LHP Cam Hobson (8-9, 3.97) to the hill. The game can be heard starting at 3:45 CDT on 92.9 FM, 1450 AM and wtkiradio.com.

Huntsville Box Score

Busy box score, Nick Shaw (two hits, triple) and Josh Prince (three singles) were active atop the lineup.

LHP Brent Suter only went five innings (four runs, three BB, one K, 81 pitches).

As indicated in gory detail above, the short start proved fateful.

This story may have the makings of a movie --

Back in June 2003, this happened:

RHP Jon Huizinga, signed from the Kalamazoo Kings of the Frontier League to Beloit; Huizinga was the first indy signing of the Doug Melvin era who was given the opportunity to make his affiliated debut with the Brewers' organization, as he went undrafted. Twenty-three middling relief appearances for that Beloit squad followed, then Huizinga was released at the end of spring training 2004.

But here's the cool thing -- it's hard to kill a dream. Huizinga, a product of Michigan State, would return to Kalamazoo briefly in 2004, but then missed most of that season and all the 2005 season with a serious arm injury. Pitching regularly in four independent leagues between 2006 and 2011, Huizinga continued to work in pro ball throughout those years without ever returning to affiliated ball.

After 2011, there is no record of Huizinga pitching professionally (Baseball Cube page). He will turn 35 years old this October.

EDIT/UPDATE: Huizinga was a pitcher/coach in the Freedom Independent Baseball League in 2012-13, but those stats aren't picked up online at Baseball Reference or Baseball Cube.

But the Brewers have signed him to a minor league contract today, and he'll report to Brevard County to take the spot of RHP Damien Magnifico, who heads to the disabled list with an undisclosed (as of now) injury.

Can't wait for the Manatees' excellent audio production staff to interview Huizinga, who gets another shot at affiliated ball with the same organization who gave him a chance more than 11 years ago. No idea if he was signed out of a open tryout or not, but there must be a very cool story behind this.

Nice. Find Huizinga (and his equally unique look) on Twitter here.

Huizinga's Pitching Coach website.

From that website:

Jonathan Huizinga grew up in small town in MI, the oldest of three children to Curt and Kristi Huizinga. Like many boys, he dreamed of one day playing under the bright lights. He played his college baseball at Michigan State University where he played for four years. Despite going undrafted, he has been playing professionally since 2002. In 2004, Jon suffered from what was said to be a career ending arm injury. Instead he came back better than before with an improved pitching nutrition plan for recovery and peak performance and performance enhancing workouts and conditioning. Jon Huizinga has been signed by the Milwaukee Brewers and Colorado Rockies, has played for multiple independent league teams (Kalamazoo Kings, Calgary Vipers, St Paul Saints, Winnipeg Goldeyes, Rockford Riverhawks, Schaumberg Flyers, Yuma Scorpions, San Angelo Colts, Peoria Explorers), and played Winterball in the Veracruz League in Mexico. This past season, 2013, Zinger was a pitching coach and pitcher in the Freedom Professional Baseball League in Arizona. Zinger throws from multiple arm slots (side arm, 3/4) and has been clocked as high as 97 MPH and has a reputation of being tough on right handed hitters. He throws a spiked curve, sinker, change up, cutter, and split finger. Throughout his career, Jon has pitched as a starter, reliever, and closer.

***

Note: The Rockies did sign Huizinga (again out of indy ball) prior to the 2007 season, but he never appeared in a game for one of their affiliates prior to his spring training release.

Nice job, BC Manatees Radio!

Manatees strike out 13 Jays in 5-1 win

By Andrew Luftglass / Brevard County Manatees

Brevard County starting pitcher Jorge Lopez, seen here in a game from earlier this season, tied a season-high with eight strikeouts in Saturday night's win over the Dunedin Blue Jays at Florida Auto Exchange Stadium. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography)

DUNEDIN, Fla. - Brevard County Manatees starter Jorge Lopez struck out eight men and the bullpen added five more punch-outs, as the Manatees defeated the Dunedin Blue Jays on Saturday night at Florida Auto Exchange Stadium, 5-1.

Lopez (9-8, 3.86 ERA) was brilliant from the start. The right-hander recorded five of his first seven outs via strikeouts and did not allow a run until the fifth. Lopez finished with just one run allowed through five innings of work. He allowed three hits and walked three.

The pitching dominance continued when Scott Lieser took the mound in the sixth. Lieser struck out three more men and only allowed one hit and one walk over two scoreless frames. Lefty Stephen Peterson then finished the job with a perfect ninth inning that included two strikeouts.

Brevard County (26-27 second half, 62-57 overall) fell just two strikeouts shy of a season-high with 13 in total. The Manatees' bullpen has also been stellar since August 7. In that span, Brevard's relievers have yet to allow a run and have combined to pitch 11.2 consecutive scoreless innings.

In terms of offense, the Manatees scored all of their runs in the third and fourth innings against D-Jays starter Roberto Osuna. In the third, Garrett Cooper and Greg Hopkins led off with free passes on a hit-by-pitch and a walk. Nathan Orf sacrifice bunted the pair into scoring position and Orlando Arcia came through with an RBI single up the middle to score Cooper with the first run of the game.

After Arcia's single, Brevard County started to get crafty on the basepaths. Arcia swiped second base and Tyrone Taylor roped a single to left field to score Hopkins and move Arcia up to third. With runners on the corners and Michael Reed at the dish, Taylor took off for second. When D-Jays catcher Jorge Saez threw down to second, Arcia bolted for home. Second baseman Christian Lopes caught the throw from Saez and fired home, but Arcia dove past the tag and scored to give Brevard County a 3-0 lead.

The 'Tees plated two more runs in the fourth inning. Alfredo Rodriguez hit a one-out single and Cooper dropped a double into left-center field to put a pair of runners in scoring position. That brought up Hopkins and the third baseman grounded a single through the left side. Both Rodriguez and Cooper scored to extend the Manatees' lead to 5-0.

Dunedin (27-28, 73-51) scored its only run of the ballgame in the fifth inning. Shane Opitz started the frame with a single to extend his hitting streak to nine games and Saez followed with a double to put runners on second and third. Lopez then struck out Lopes and issued a walk to Nick Baligod to load the bases with one out.

Dwight Smith, Jr. stepped up with his team trailing by five runs, but with the tying run in the on-deck circle. The left-handed hitter chopped a ground ball toward Cooper and the first baseman tried to turn a double play. He fielded the ball and threw to Arcia at second. Arcia got the first out and made a return throw to first base, where Lopez was covering the bag, but the throw pulled Lopez off the base. Smith was safe at first and Opitz scored from third to cut the Manatees' advantage to 5-1.

Lopez picked up a victory for the first time in seven starts. Saturday night was the first time since his June 26 win that the right-hander had left a ballgame with the Manatees leading.

Osuna (0-2, 10.03 ERA) took the loss for Dunedin. In his fourth start following Tommy John Surgery, the right-hander allowed all five Manatees runs over 3.1 innings of work. He surrendered seven hits, walked two and struck out four.

Rodriguez and Arcia were the biggest thorns in Dunedin's side at the dish. Rodriguez produced his first three-hit game of the season with a 3-for-3 night that included a walk, a run and a stolen base. Arcia also had three knocks in a 3-for-5 performance. The shortstop doubled, drove home a run and scored a run. Arcia also swiped two bags to give him a team-best 10 stolen bases in August.

With the victory, the Manatees have split the first two games against Dunedin and will go for the series win on Sunday night. First pitch at Florida Auto Exchange Stadium is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. Taylor Williams (0-1, 2.25 ERA) is expected to start for Brevard County against Matt Boyd (5-2, 1.07 ERA).

Brevard County Box Score

Hard to believe this was the first win for Jorge Lopez since June, but he pitched well, striking out eight and giving up just the one run. Scott Lieser pitched well in relief, allowing just one hit in three innings of work. Alfredo Rodriguez reached base in all four plate appearances, collecting three singles and a walk. Orlando Arcia went 3-for-5 with a double while Tyrone Taylor added two hits and a walk.

Sounds Top 'Topes In Opener, 8-3

Clark Goes Deep Again; Jungmann Delivers Quality Start in Win

Nashville Sounds

(MIKE STRASINGER )

ALBUQUERQUE - The Nashville Sounds (69-58) rattled off 17 hits in Saturday night's series opener at Isotopes Park to defeat the Albuquerque Isotopes, 8-3. The win, paired with Memphis' win over El Paso, keeps Nashville tied with the Redbirds for first place in the division with 17 games to go.

Nashville jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the first inning on five consecutive singles off of Isotopes starting pitcher Zach Lee (7-11).

First baseman Matt Clark's bases-loaded single through the hole at second plated the Sounds' first two runs, while Sean Halton follow with an RBI single of his own. Clark later scored on a groundout by Hector Gomez, 3-for-5.

Sounds starter Taylor Jungmann (7-5) limited the 'Topes to two runs, one earned, which both came across in the bottom of the second inning.

Albuquerque's Brock Peterson lifted Jungmann's 3-1 pitch over the left-center field wall to lead off the inning. Then Walter Ibarra knocked in Mike Baxter with a single following Matt Pagnozzi's two-out throwing error.

Jungmann picked up his seventh win and quality start of the season, holding Albuquerque to just three hits in six innings of work. He fired seven strikeouts and issued four walks before reliever Brent Leach began the seventh.

The Sounds added to their lead as Jason Rogers, 3-for-5, worked around the bases in the third inning: hitting a single, moving to second on a Lee wild pitch, and taking third on a groundout before scoring on Halton's single.

Clark blasted his 10th home run of the year in the fifth inning to give Nashville a 6-2 advantage. The California-native has five home runs over his last five games and extended his hit streak to six games, matching his best as a Sound.

Outfielder Logan Schafer also saw his season-best hit streak move to 13 games, which marks the longest by a Sound this season.

Rounding out the Sounds scoring was catcher Matt Pagnozzi, who drove a two-run double to left-center field in the ninth inning to give Nashville a 8-3 lead.

Leach allowed a hit in the home half of the eighth inning to put a runner on base for Dustin Molleken, who allowed the inherited runner to come around on Tim Federowicz's RBI single. Closer Rob Wooten also saw work from the 'pen, firing a spotless ninth inning.

The Sounds will play game two against Albuquerque Sunday afternoon at 2:35 p.m. Nashville sends RHP Jay Jackson (0-1, 7.71) to the hill opposite the Albuquerque's RHP Jeff Bennett (6-6, 3.96).

Final: Helena 7, Ogden 3

Hitting continues to surge, Brewers win 7-3

By Dustin Daniel / Helena Brewers

The Helena Brewers (9-11) won their second straight against the Ogden Raptors (9-10) with a 7-3 victory on Saturday at Kindrick Field.

David Carver (1-0) got his first decision in the Pioneer League after five quality innings in the start. The left-hander gave up two runs on six hits and struck out two.

Helena jumped on the board in the bottom of the second with three runs on four hits off Trevor Oaks (4-1). Eric Williams led the way in the inning with an RBI double and a run scored. Williams was 2-for-2 on the game with two runs, an RBI and a stolen base. He would reach in all four of his plate appearances.

Trailing 7-2 going to the ninth, the Raptors would try to make a late rally. Colin Hering led off the inning with a home run to make it a 4-run deficit, taking advantage of Ryan Deeter. Deeter was only able to record one out before being pulled from the game.

With the bases loaded and the tying runner at the plate, Wesley Cox would strike out two straight to end the game, clinching at the minimum a series split for the Brewers.

It is the first time this season they have won back-to-back games against a Southern Division opponent.

The Brewers and Raptors will face off in the third game of their four-game series Sunday at Kindrick Field. First pitch is set for 1:05 p.m.

Helena Box Score

A total of 14 hits for the Brewers spread across eight starters, including some notable hitting performances from Gregory Munoz (3-for-5), Brandon Diaz (2-for-5), Eric Williams (2-for-2, 2B), and Francisco Castillo (3-for-4, 2B). Zach Hirsch had a nice outing in relief, pitching 3 innings and only allowing 1 hit and 1 walk while striking out 3.

Castillo, Brewers tame Raptors once again

By Curt Synness / Helena Independent Record

Thom Bridge/ Independent Record- Edgardo Rivera high fives a fellow teammate after running in the Brewers' first run of the night against the Ogden Raptors.

For the second night in a row, the Helena Brewers offense powered the home team to a Pioneer League win over the visiting Ogden Raptors. The Brewers beat the Raptors 7-3 on Saturday at Kindrick Legion Field after winning the first contest of the four-game series on Friday, 7-1.

Helena improves to 22-36 overall and 9-11 in the second half while holding on to third place in the Northern Division.

Ogden slides to 24-33, 9-10 in the Southern Division.

The Brewers out-hit their counterparts 14-10 in the win, led by Francisco Castillo and Gregory Munoz with three base knocks apiece.

Castillo, a 5-10, 165-pound shortstop from Bonao, Dominican Republic, produced a double and drove in three runs on the night.

Munoz, the Brewers second baseman, hit three singles and scored a run.

Also with two hits each were Eric Williams (double, two runs), who walked twice to reach base a total of four times, and Brandon Diaz.

The locals have now piled up 27 hits in the first two games versus Ogden.

Helena scored three runs in the second inning, one in the fourth, two in the fifth and one in the seventh frame.

A critical stanza for the home team was the fifth, sparked by the legs of Munoz and Diaz. The Brewers entered the inning holding onto a slim, 4-2 lead until Munoz beat out an infield hit on a ground ball to second base, and then promptly stole second.

Diaz then singled to center, with Munoz advancing to third. After Sthervin Matos’ RBI single, Diaz swiped third and then scored on the front end of a double steal, giving the Brewers a four-run cushion, 6-2.

Helena used four pitchers on the night, with starter David Carver earning the win. Carver, a 22-year old left-hander from Northridge, California, went five innings, giving up six hits and two runs while striking out two with no walks.

Wesley Cox closed the deal in the top of the ninth for Helena. Cox entered the contest with the bases loaded and one out, but struck out the final two Raptor hitters to end the game.

Ogden starter Trevor Oaks allowed seven hits and four runs in four frames and was saddled with the loss.

One of the game’s more unusual plays occurred in the third, when Raptors DH Julian Leon lined a hard shot to right field. Helena’s Eric Williams fielded the ball on one bounce and fired a strike to first baseman Alan Sharkey to get his man by a step for the inning’s third out.

The two teams square off for the third tilt today at Kindrick Legion, with first pitch set for 1 p.m.

NOTE: Right-handed pitcher Brandon Moore was promoted Saturday to the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers of the Midwest League. Moore won Pioneer League Pitcher of the Week honors in the last week of July and continued his solid play in the second half of the season. He is the only Brewer this year to pick up a weekly League award. No official word has been given yet if there will be a call-up from the AZL to replace him.

Taylor Jungmann seems to be settling in nicely at AAA. In his last 10 games he has gone 5-1 with a 3.29 ERA, a 1.13 WHIP and 52 k's in 54.2 IP. Walks are high (23) but has only allowed 39 H over those same 54.2 IP.

If he can get a little bit of control he could be an awesome addition to any major league roster. However, when you throw 105 pitches in 6 innings, and only 55 of them are strikes; it's hard to believe success will come at the major league level.

Agreed. Same could be said for Ariel Pena. Take away the walks and his other numbers suggest dominance.
