Ten K's and zero walks last night, Anthony Banda?

Wow.

That's 22 K's and four walks over 17.1 innings in three starts since the trade. Combined with his Timber Rattlers work prior, Banda has allowed just three earned runs in his last 32.1 innings (MiLB.com Player Page). The southpaw turned 21 five days ago.

Mitch who? Haniger remains on the D-Backs' AA DL with a leg injury.

Final: Brevard County 1, Dunedin 4

Brevard shut down in 4-1 loss to Jays

By Andrew Luftglass / Brevard County Manatees

DUNEDIN, Fla. - Dunedin Blue Jays starter Ben White was close to unhittable on Friday night at Florida Auto Exchange Stadium. The right-hander carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning and eventually pitched his team to a 4-1 win over the Brevard County Manatees, 4-1.

White (6-6, 4.90 ERA) could not complete the no-hitter, as Greg Hopkins lined a double down the left field line to lead off the sixth inning, but the D-Jays' starting pitcher was still stellar over seven frames. The righty allowed just one run on two hits, hit one batter and struck out five to pick up the win.

Dunedin (27-27 second half, 73-50 overall) took a few innings to give White run support, but the Blue Jays eventually put a run on the board in the bottom of the third. Shane Opitz led off the inning with a single against Manatees starter Chad Pierce. After Pierce got the next two men to pop out, Nick Baligod singled to put runners on the corners for Dwight Smith, Jr.

With a chance to plate the first run of the ballgame, Smith chopped a ground ball toward the mound and Pierce reached up to try to make the play. The pitcher got a piece of the ball, but it skipped off his glove and settled in the infield grass. Smith reached first safely for an infield single and Opitz scored to give Dunedin a 1-0 lead.

The D-Jays tacked on three more runs in the fifth. Peter Mooney singled to start the frame and Opitz followed with triple off the right field wall to push Dunedin's advantage to 2-0. Jorge Saez added to the lead with an RBI single and after a double play cleared the bases, Baligod launched a solo home run to right field to make the Jays' lead, 4-0.

Brevard County (25-27, 61-57) scored its only run in White's final inning of work, the top of the seventh. Tyrone Taylor began the inning with a bloop single that fell in front of Jays right fielder Marcus Knecht, who appeared to lose the ball in the lights. Michael Reed was hit by a pitch immediately after, but White rolled a 6-4-3 double play for the first two outs and Taylor moved up to third. With Mike Garza hitting, White skipped a wild pitch to the backstop, which allowed Taylor to score and cut the Manatees' deficit to 4-1.

Pierce (3-8, 4.63 ERA) took the loss for Brevard County. The righty went five innings and allowed four runs on seven hits. Pierce walked two and struck out two.

Both teams' bullpens put up zeros the rest of the way. Dunedin right-hander Danny Barnes pitched a perfect eighth inning and bridged the gap to Jays closer Arik Sikula. The Florida State League-leader in saves pitched a one-two-three ninth to complete his 30th save of the season.

Manatees relievers Trevor Seidenberger and Tyler Spurlin were also perfect over three innings. Seidenberger set the D-Jays down in order in the sixth and seventh innings. The left-hander struck out a pair in his strongest relief outing with Brevard County. Spurlin then worked a perfect eighth inning with two groundouts and a strikeout.

The Manatees and Blue Jays face off again on Saturday night in Dunedin. First pitch at Florida Auto Exchange Stadium is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Jorge Lopez (8-8, 3.94 ERA) is slated to start for Brevard against Roberto Osuna (0-1, 8.64 ERA).

Brevard County Box Score

Chad Pierce made the spot start for Brevard as Damien Magnifico was shut down for the season after reaching his innings limit. Pierce went five innings, allowing all four runs and was tagged with the loss. Trevor Seidenberger and Tyler Spurlin combined to work the final three innings without giving up a run. Greg Hopkins doubled and Tyrone Taylor singled and scored the only Manatees run.

Kane County clubs three homers to beat Wisconsin 7-2

Rattlers drop game, but don't lose ground in Wild Card race

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

GRAND CHUTE, WI - The Kane County Cougars had three homers and picked up solid pitching from a pair of hurlers to defeat the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 7-2 on Friday night. Jacob Rogers, Cael Brockmeyer, and Trey Martin all homered to send the Rattlers to their second straight loss.

Kane County (78-45 overall, 33-20 second half) used the longball to go in front in the second inning. Rogers started the inning with a home run to left. Brockmeyer hit a solo home run with one out in the second and the Cougars were up 2-0.

Rogers struck again in the third inning when he singled with two outs to drive in a run for a 3-0 lead.

In the fourth, Martin stepped to the plate with two outs and no one on base for the Cougars. He sent a sinking line drive to center. Johnny Davis tried to make a diving catch, but the ball skipped past Davis and rolled all the way to the wall, Martin streaked around the bases for an inside-the-park home run to give Kane County a 4-0 lead.

Rattlers starting pitcher Barrett Astin walked Shawon Dunston, Jr., the batter immediately after Martin. Dunston stole second and would score on a two-out single by Danny Lockhart to make it 5-0.

Wisconsin (65-57, 29-24) got on the scoreboard against Kane County starter Jonathan Martinez in the bottom of the fourth. Clint Coulter's high popup in front of the plate with two outs dropped in for a single. Taylor Brennan followed with a double to right-center to knock in Coulter.

In the fifth, Steve Halcomb drove in a Omar Garcia with a single to make the score 5-2. Chris McFarland would single with two outs to bring the tying run to the plate later in the fifth, but Martinez got a strikeout to end the Wisconsin rally. Martinez scattered six hits over five innings, walked none, and struck out two before turning the game over to Tyler Ihrig.

The Cougars added two more two-out runs in the game. They had a runner at second with two outs in the sixth against Wisconsin reliever Tristan Archer. But, back-to-back walks loaded the bases. Victor Caratini drew a third straight walk to force in a run. In the eighth, Martin reached on a wild pitch after strike three to start the inning. He stole second and went to third on a flyout to center. Mark Zaguins blooped in a two-out single to right to score Martin and the Cougars were up 7-2.

Martin went 2-for-3 with three stolen bases and three runs scored for the Cougars.

Ihrig pitched four scoreless innings and allowed one hit, a two-out double to Halcomb in the seventh inning. He earned the save, his first, in the game. Martinez earned his ninth win of the season.

The Timber Rattlers dropped back to three games behind the Cedar Rapids Kernels for the second half Western Division lead with their loss. The Kernels beat the Peoria Chiefs 11-0 at home on Friday night and that allowed Wisconsin to stay two games in front of the Chiefs for the second half Western Division Wild Card. The Rattlers also remained four games clear of the Quad Cities River Bandits in the Wild Card race since the Bandits lost 6-5 to Burlington on Friday night. There are seventeen games remaining in the regular season.

Game two of the series is Saturday night. Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Wei-Chung Wang (0-1, 6.00) gets the start for the Timber Rattlers against Daury Torrez (10-5, 2.94) for Kane County. Game time is 6:35pm.

Saturday may just be the middle of summer, but just…well, "Let it go!" Elsa and Anna will be on hand to meet fans and there will be a special sing-along during the game. Play Potawatomi Bingo Casino Baseball Bingo during the game and stick around for a cool postgame fireworks display presented by FOX 11!

If you can't make it out to the ballpark, catch the action on AM1280, WNAM or IHeartRadio starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 6:15pm. Saturday's game is also available to MiLB.TV subscribers.

Wisconsin Boxscore

Tristan Archer only gave up 2 hits in his 5 innings but the 4 walks he issued cost him. I had a personal issue pop up so I didn't see the inside-the-park homerun but Barrett Astin wasn't sharp through the first 2 innings when I was watching.

Steven Halcomb (2-3,2B,BB) had the only noteworthy day at the plate.

EL PASO, Texas - The Nashville Sounds (68-58) came up short of a series win Friday night at Southwest University Park, losing 7-3 in the series finale against the El Paso Chihuahuas, whose five-run seventh inning was too much for Nashville to overcome.

Leading 3-2 at the stretch, the Sounds ran into trouble in the home half of the seventh inning, when the Chihuahuas sent nine batters to the plate for five runs on seven hits.

Sounds reliever Arcenio Leon (1-3) allowed two singles to put runners on the corners for right-handed pitcher Jose De La Torre. El Paso's Jonathan Galvez made the Sounds pay with a two-run double off De La Torre that gave proved to be the game winner.

The Chihuahuas kept the attack alive in the seventh by scoring on a Jeff Francoeur sacrifice fly, Cody Decker double, and Adam Moore single.

Leon was charged the loss, his third, after allowing three runs in 1 1/3 innings of work. De La Torre also allowed three in 1 2/3 innings for Nashville.

Nashville took an initial two-run lead in the fourth inning with three extra-base knocks. Irving Falu led off the frame with a triple to the right-field corner and was driven home by Jeremy Hermida's sacrifice fly.

Then with two outs in the inning, outfielder Eugenio Velez hit a double off El Paso third baseman Decker's glove to score Jason Rogers, who tripled, to give the Sounds their second run.

El Paso battled back with a Francoeur RBI double in the fourth inning and Decker's solo home run in the sixth.

Catcher Matt Pagnozzi hit a two-out go-ahead single to right field, which scored first baseman Matt Clark, but the Sounds' second lead did not hold for long.

Sounds starter Ariel Pena went five innings, limiting the Chihuahuas to one run on two hits and four walks. The right-handed pitcher fired five strikeouts and left in line for the win with a 2-1 lead, but finished with a no-decision.

The Sounds head to Albuquerque on Saturday to begin a four-game set against the Isotopes (AAA-Dodgers). Nashville sends RHP Taylor Jungmann (6-5, 4.70) to the hill opposite the Albuquerque's RHP Zach Lee (7-5, 5.15). First pitch at Isotopes Park is scheduled for 8:05 p.m.

Final: Helena 7, Ogden 1

Rain can't slow down Brewers

By Dustin Daniel / Helena Brewers

The Helena Brewers (8-11) breezed to a 7-1 victory in a rain-delayed contest Friday against the Ogden Raptors (9-9).

Grant Holmes (0-1) was roughed up in his Pioneer League debut for Ogden, giving up seven runs in three plus innings.

Alan Sharkey ripped an RBI double to score Tucker Neuhaus in the second to begin the Brewer scoring. Sharkey now has hits in 9 of his last 10 games.

The Brewers would compile 13 hits in their six offensive frames, with five hitters claiming multi-hit performances.

Justin Chigbogu hit a solo home run to opposite field in the fourth for the lone Raptors run. It was Chigbogu's 14th homer which puts him in sole possession of first in the Pioneer League in round-trippers.

Helena's offense peaked in the fourth with four runs on five hits. Brandon Diaz, Sthervin Matos and Natanael Mejia all had RBI base hits against Holmes to knock him out with just one out. Ryan Taylor wasn't able to fair much better, giving up two more hits before he escaped the inning.

The Brewers and Raptors will face off in the second game of their four-game series Saturday at Kindrick Field. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.

Helena Box Score

Multi-hit efforts from five of the top six batters in Helena's lineup, included Gregory Munoz (2-for-5), Brandon Diaz (2-for-5), Sthervin Matos (2-for-5, 2B), Nathanael Mejia (2-for-4, BB), and Tucker Neuhaus (2-for-4). Helena's pitchers combined to allow just 6 hits and 1 run while striking out 8. Starter J.B. Kole went 5.0 innings pitched and gave up 5 hits, 1 run (a solo home run) and struck out 5 batters. Josh Uhen pitched a perfect 6th inning and Tyler Linehan finished out the final 3 innings after a 53-minute rain delay allowing just 1 hit and 1 walk while striking out 3.

Brewers’ bats heat up in rain-delayed win over Raptors

By Amber Kuehn / Helena Independent Record

Raptors pitchers were no match for Helena’s hot hitting Friday night.

In the series opener against Ogden at Kindrick Legion Field, the Brewers recorded 13 hits and won 7-1 over their Pioneer League South Division opponent.

Gregory Munoz, Brandon Diaz, Sthervin Matos, Natanael Mejia and Tucker Neuhaus all had mulit-hit games for Helena (8-11). Mejia also added a pair of RBIs.

Rain delayed the contest for 53 minutes between the sixth and seventh innings, but Tyler Linehan was solid in relief for the Brewers when play resumed. The southpaw pitched two perfect innings before allowing a walk, hit and throwing a pair of wild pitches in the ninth, but Linehan struck out the final two batters to get the save.

The Los Angeles Dodgers’ top prospect from this year’s draft, starting pitcher Grant Holmes, made his Pioneer League debut for Ogden. The right-hander retired the first five batters he faced before giving up a single to Neuhaus.

That started an offensive onslaught for Helena, which went on a hit parade after that.

The Brewers took a 2-0 lead in the third inning with back-to-back RBI singles by Mitch Meyer and Mejia and never trailed in the game.

Raptors designated hitter Justin Chigbogu responded in the fourth when he crushed a no-doubter to left field. The solo shot to opposite field was Chigbogu’s Pioneer League-leading 14th home run of the season and moved him into fifth all-time on the Raptors’ list of home run leaders.

That was all the visitors could muster, though, against effective Brewers pitching. Starter J.B. Kole allowed just five hits on the evening to earn the win, and Josh Uhen threw a 1-2-3 frame in relief before the rain hit.

The Brewers broke the game open in a four-run fourth inning, when Helena sent nine men to the plate. Holmes finished the night with seven runs on nine hits and took the loss in his first appearance for the Raptors (9-9).

The two teams will meet again tonight at Kindrick Legion Field at 7:05 p.m.

NOTES: The Brewers’ 13 hits were just five shy of tying a season high ... Gregory Munoz extended his hitting streak to 10 games with a single in the third. ... The Brewers improved to 9-3 when the bullpen doesn’t allow a run ... Manager Tony Diggs was absent for the second straight game due to a death in the family. He’ll miss the next two games as well. Hitting coach Jason Dubois has taken over the third-base coaching duties the past two nights.

Smokies Blank Stars Again

Steve Jarnicki, Huntsville Stars

Kodak, TN - The Tennessee Smokies shutout the Huntsville Stars for a second straight night. Friday, the Smokies handed the Stars a 2-0 loss at Smokies Park. With the win, Tennessee has officially won the series with the Stars going into the series finale Saturday night.

Tennessee scored both of their runs against Huntsville starter Austin Ross (0-2).

In the bottom of the first, with Pin-Chieh Chen at third base, Addison Russell hit a weak grounder in front of home plate. Ross charged the ball but couldn't come up with it cleanly. Chen scampered home giving the Smokies a 1-0 lead.

In the bottom of the second, the Smokies recorded three straight hits off Ross including an RBI single by Stephen Bruno.

Ross pitched well but still took the defeat. Ross pitched five innings and allowed two runs on four hits while striking out seven.

The Stars nearly took the lead on one swing of the bat in the eighth. With two runners on base, pinch hitter Nick Ramirez hit a deep fly ball to right field. Jae-Hoon Ha leaped up and took away a home run from Ramirez.

Matt Loosen (5-5) got the win out of the Smokies bullpen after tossing three scoreless innings.

Frank Batista collected his tenth save as got the Stars to go 1-2-3 in the ninth.

Antonio Rodriguez strikes out swinging.

Michael Suiter called out on strikes.

Pitching Change: Milton Gomez replaces Bubba Blau.

RHP's Milton Gomez and Gian Rizzo backed up their most recent strong outings, as the final score indicates.

Maryvale Game Log

LF Troy Stokes singled twice and walked.

With Yunior Santana batting, Troy Stokes picked off and caught stealing 2nd base, pitcher Mike Gomez to first baseman Cody Yount to shortstop Johan Cruz.

Not a fan of MiLB's box scores including both the pickoff and the caught stealing. If he's out going back to the bag, it's a pickoff. If he takes off for 2nd base, it's a caught stealing.

Early-season baserunning adventures have subsided, leaving him at 6-for-14 in stolen base attempts.
