From the Daytona News-Journal (link for full article) --

The Manatees had the right pitcher on the mound to start the four-game series. (The teams play a twin bill in Viera on Thursday.) Tyler Wagner came into the contest 11-5 with a 1.76 ERA that was second in the league. He was 3-0 with a 0.82 ERA in four games against Daytona.

Wagner (12-5) scattered five hits, walked three, struck out seven and yielded an unearned run in six innings.

“I just threw all my pitches aggressively, stayed in the zone and let my offspeed stuff work for me,” said Wagner, who has given up just two earned runs to the Cubs in 28 innings. “I just wanted to help us get out front in this series.”

Via Steve Jarnicki with the Stars --

The Stars enjoyed an off day Monday and now begin a stretch of fifteen consecutive games before the final off day of the regular season on August 27th. All 19 remaining games on the Stars schedule are against teams who are fighting for a second half division title. The Stars are tied with Tennessee and Chattanooga for first place in the 2nd half standings going into tonight. The Stars also have a home series against the Jackson Generals who are 1.5 games outside of first place going into tonight. The Stars travel to Mobile to play the BayBears who are in first in the South standings. The Stars final series of the season is at home against the Mississippi Braves who are one game outside of first place in the Southern League South entering tonight. If the Stars win the second half, they would host games 1 & 2 and if needed, 4 & 5 in the opening round of the playoffs.

OF Josh Fellhauer went 1-3 Tuesday with two walks. He has walked six times in his last three games. In 21 games with the Stars, Fellhauer already has nine multiple hit games and has seven outfield assists.

SS Yadiel Rivera went 1-3 and homered in his second straight game. He does have home run potential. In 2012 with Low-A Wisconsin he hit 12 home runs. He enters today on a six game hitting streak games since breaking out of his 0-16 skid. In his last 28 games, Rivera is batting .340 (32-94) with two homeruns and 7 RBI.

Final: Helena 3, Idaho Falls 0

Brewers shut out Chukars 3-0

By Dustin Daniel / Helena Brewers

The Helena Brewers (7-10) shut out the Idaho Falls Chukars (8-8) 3-0 on Wednesday at Kindrick Field.

Jorge Ortega (3-3) was outstanding in the start, pitching seven shutout innings and giving up just three hits. He would face just two over the minimum. Ortega would at one point retire 11 straight batters and later three Brewers pitchers would combine to retire 12 straight, setting a new season high.

The first Helena run came in the third when Gregory Munoz scored on a double steal with Brandon Diaz. Diaz stole two bases in the game, giving him 20 on the season. He is now two ahead of Ty Washington for the Pioneer League lead.

Alan Sharkey's 8-game hitting streak came to an end on Wednesday as he went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts. Sharkey came up as the final at-bat of the game for the Brewers and went down swinging.

Wesley Cox and Donnie Hissa each pitched one inning of relief with Hissa picking up his first professional save. He would get a ground out from Ryan O'Hearn to end the game.

The Brewers and Chukars will face off in a rubber match on Thursday from Kindrick Field. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.

Helena Box Score

Helena only allowed four hits in the game, and as detailed above Jorge Ortega was stellar through seven innings pitched. Pioneer League stolen base leader Brandon Diaz led Helena hitters by going 2-for-4.

Clark Homers Twice As Sounds Rout El Paso, 13-3

First-Place Nashville Matches Season High For Runs Scored

Nashville SoundS

EL PASO, Texas - First baseman Matt Clark belted a pair of home runs to lead the Nashville Sounds to a 13-3 rout over El Paso on Wednesday evening at Southwest University Park.

Nashville (67-57), which matched a season high with its 13 runs on the night, retained its half-game division lead over cross-state rival Memphis, which won in Albuquerque.

The teams combined for six home runs and 12 extra-base hits on the evening.

Shortstop Hector Gomez gave the Sounds a 1-0 lead in the second when he belted his team-leading 14th home run of the year, a one-out solo shot to left off Andrew Cashner (0-1).

El Paso answered Gomez's shot with a pair of their own in the home half of the frame to grab a 2-1 advantage. Yeison Asencio and Adam Moore did the damage against Donovan Hand.

The home run show continued in the third when Clark slugged a two-out, two-run homer to right to put Nashville back on top, 3-2, and chase Cashner from the contest. The blast was Clark's second in two nights and seventh on the year.

Logan Schafer singled in the fourth inning to extend his hitting streak to 11 games, matching the longest effort by a Sounds player this season.

The Sounds broke the game open with a six-run outburst in the top of the fifth inning against a pair of El Paso relievers, sending 11 batters to the plate in the frame.

Clark got things started as he struck again for the Sounds, swatting a leadoff opposite-field homer down the left field line off Dennis O'Grady to up the Nashville lead to 4-2. The blast was Clark's eighth with the Sounds and 18th overall on the year. His two-homer night is the fifth recorded by a Nashville batter in 2014.

Sean Halton (3-for-5) followed Clark's blast with a single to chase O'Grady, and Gomez greeted new reliever Keyvius Sampson with an RBI double into the left field corner to make it a 5-2 contest. After a walk and hit batsman loaded the bases, the right-hander issued a walk to Schafer to force home Gomez. Eugenio Velez then lifted a sacrifice fly to deep center for a 7-2 Nashville lead and Jeremy Hermida capped off the scoring with a two-run double off the left-center wall.

Shortstop Tyler Greene hit El Paso's third solo homer of the night to lead off the bottom of the fifth. The infielder's seventh big fly of the year but the Nashville lead to 9-3.

Hand (2-7) snapped a five-game losing streak by earning the win for the Sounds. He allowed three runs (all on solo homers) in his five innings of work.

The Nashville offense kept going in the sixth, plating four more runs against new El Paso reliever Bobby LaFromboise. Pinch-hitter Irving Falu contributed an RBI single in the frame before Velez drilled a two-run double and Rogers plated a run with a groundout that upped the advantage to 13-3.

Dustin Molleken followed Hand with 2 2/3 scoreless innings of relief before Jose De La Torre recorded the final four outs to close out the Nashville win.

The teams continue the series with another 8:05 p.m. CT matchup on Thursday. Right-hander Michael Blazek (2-4, 3.65) will toe the slab for the Sounds and square off against El Paso right-hander Matt Wisler (7-4, 5.30).

Wisconsin wins 6-2 over Clinton

Coulter drives in three for Timber Rattlers

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

GRAND CHUTE, WI - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers got back to their winning ways with a 6-2 win over the Clinton LumberKings Wednesday night at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium. Clint Coulter drove in three runs and Preston Gainey picked up his second straight victory for the Rattlers.

Wisconsin (65-55 overall, 29-22 second half) took the lead with an unearned run in the bottom of the third inning. Johnny Davis bunted back to the mound with one out and reached when the ball was mishandled. Chris McFarland followed with a hit-and-run single to right to get Davis to third. Michael Ratterree dropped a single into right field to knock in Davis for a 1-0 lead.

Joe DeCarlo doubled to lead off the fifth inning for Clinton (52-67, 22-29). Gainey, Wisconsin's starting pitcher, got the next two batters and kept DeCarlo at second base. Then, Gainey jammed Brett Thomas on a 3-2 pitch, but Thomas would reach on an infield single when he beat the throw to first on his slow roller to short. Gainey would get two strikes on Martin Peguero, but the LumberKings second baseman lined a single to left to drive in DeCarlo with the tying run.

Davis started the Wisconsin fifth inning with a single and was at second base with two outs. David Denson's grounder to third was misplayed for an error and Davis had to hold on at second. Coulter worked the count full before lining a double into the corner in right. The runners were off on the payoff pitch and both Davis and Denson scored for a 3-1 lead.

The first three runs of the game for the Rattlers were scored off Clinton starting pitcher Seon-Gi Kim and all three runs were unearned as the Rattlers made the LumberKings pay for their defensive miscues.

Angel Ortega doubled in the bottom of the sixth inning and would eventually cross home plate on an run-scoring fielder's choice by Chris McFarland for a 4-1 advantage.

Rattlers starting pitcher Preston Gainey left after five innings. He allowed one run on five hits and struck out eight without walking a batter.

Luke Curtis pitched a scoreless sixth, but allowed an RBI double to Peguero in the top of the seventh that cut Wisconsin's lead to 4-2. The double by Peguero also put runners at second and third with one out in the inning, but Curtis got out of the inning with a strikeout and a flyout to center.

The Rattlers added a pair of insurance runs without the benefit of a hit in the bottom of the seventh. Clinton reliever Kevin McCoy walked Ratterree and Denson to start the inning. McCoy would uncork a wild pitch with Coulter at the plate that got past catcher Christian Carmichael, who didn't spot the ball right away. Ratterree hit third base at full speed and raced for home to score from second on the wild pitch. Denson, who took third on the wild pitch, would score on a sacrifice fly by Coulter for a 6-2 lead.

Curtis worked a 1-2-3 eighth and Chris Razo pitched a scoreless ninth to close out Clinton.

Wisconsin maintained their playoff position with their victory on Wednesday night. The Rattlers remained one game behind Cedar Rapids in the Western Division title race and stayed two games in front of Peoria for the Western Division Wild Card. The Kernels beat Beloit 6-1 and Peoria won 10-7 at Burlington. There are nineteen games remaining in the regular season.

Game three of the series is Thursday night. Javier Salas (0-0, 2.70) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Eddie Campbell (8-8, 5.13) is set to start for the LumberKings. Game time is 7:05pm.

Thursday night is a Thirsty Thursday presented by Arty's Old Fashioned and 95.9 KISS FM with 21-oz Pepsi products, 16-oz Miller products, or Arty's Old Fashioned drinks for just $2.

There are a pair of giveaways on Thursday night, too. The weather didn't cooperate back in April so the Brett Lawrie bobblehead has been rescheduled to August 14. The first 500 fans to attend this game will receive a bobblehead of the former Timber Rattlers All-Star second baseman courtesy of Ansay & Associates. The first 1,000 fans to attend this game will receive a poster featuring Timber Rattlers outfielder Michael Ratterree from Dunkin Donuts. This is poster number nine in a series of ten that are being given away this season.

If you can't make it out to the ballpark, there are several ways to catch the action. Time Warner Cable SportsChannel will have the television broadcast starting at 7:00pm. The radio broadcast may be heard on AM1280, WNAM or IHeartRadio starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 6:45pm. Thursday's game is also available to MiLB.TV subscribers.

Helena wins 3-0 for first shutout; Ortega pitches a gem

By Curt Synness / Helena Independent Record

http://bloximages.chicago2.vip.townnews.com/helenair.com/content/tncms/assets/v3/editorial/e/bc/ebcb8810-235b-11e4-9bd3-0019bb2963f4/53ec20e3b6894.preview-620.jpg

Thom Bridge/ Independent Record- Alan Sharkey kneels to receive a toss at first base Wednesday night against the Idaho Falls Chukars.

In a pitching masterpiece at Kindrick Legion Field on Wednesday, the Helena Brewers whitewashed the Idaho Falls Chukars 3-0.

The Pioneer League game was delayed 20 minutes at the start due to a rainstorm, after which Helena starter Jorge Ortega worked seven innings for the win, moving his record to 3-3 on the year.

The Brewers gave up just four hits in the victory, which evens the series at one apiece following a 3-1 win by Idaho Falls on Tuesday. The rubber match is scheduled for today at 7:05 p.m.

Jorge Ortega faced just two men over the minimum, while retiring the last seven Chukars he faced in a row.

The 21-year old from Caracas, Venezuela, allowed just three hits with no walks while striking out three. The defense played errorless ball behind Ortega — a 6-foot-1, 165-pound right hander — in addition to an inning-ending 6-4-3 double play in the fifth.

Relievers Wesley Cox and Donnie Hissa closed out the final two scoreless frames, cementing the Brewers’ first shutout of the year.

Helena’s initial run came in the third inning, when Gregory Munoz singled and went to second on an errant pickoff attempt. After Brandon Diaz’s single, advancing Munoz to the third, the Brewers went up 1-0 on a double steal.

It turned out to be the deciding run, although the hosts tacked on two more counters for insurance.

Idaho Falls’ pitching was nearly as spectacular as Helena’s, permitting just five hits. Starter Brooks Pounders, a 6-4, 270-pounder from Temecula, California, went the first 4 2/3 innings, giving up four hits and two runs, one of which was unearned. He fanned six Brewers and did not walk a batter.

Chukars relievers Zach Loworn and Mariel Checo finished the last 3 1/3 frames, allowing just one hit and a run.

The Brewers tacked on a run in the fourth to go up 2-0, when Luis Aviles’ squeeze bunt scored Connor Narron from third. And then in the seventh, the locals pushed another tally across on Diaz’s RBI single, plating Eric Williams.

Diaz had the lone multi-hit game of the evening with a pair of singles.

The web gem of the night belonged to Helena’s Brandon Diaz, who robbed Luis Valenzuela of a base hit with a diving catch of a dying quail in shallow center field in the sixth inning.

Helena improves to 7-10 in the Pioneer League’s Northern Division in the second half of the season, while Idaho Falls is even at 8-8 in the Southern Division.

The Brewers have yet to win a series against a Southern Division opponent this year.
