Victor Roache launched one into the Halifax River to turn a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 lead. That seemed to discombobulate Paniagua and he gave up 3 more runs in the inning. Tyler Wagner with a decent outing through 5.

Tees win. Wagner slightly off (100 pitches in 6 innings) but effective enough. Beat the Cubs! Now for game two. (est 8:15 eastern).

GRAND CHUTE, WI - The Clinton LumberKings scored three runs with two outs in the top of the eighth inning to erase a 2-1 Wisconsin Timber Rattlers lead on Tuesday night at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium. Clinton would hold on to defeat the Wisconsin 4-2 in game one a three-game series.

Dustin DeMuth gave the Timber Rattlers (64-55 overall, 28-22 second half) a 1-0 lead with a leadoff homer in the bottom of the second inning. The home run was the first in the Midwest League for DeMuth, the 5th round pick of the Milwaukee Brewers from the 2014 draft.

The LumberKings (52-66, 22-28) tied the game in the top of the fourth inning. Tyler O'Neill reached on a single and a balk by Clint Terry moved O'Neill to second base. Joe DeCarlo followed with a single to left to drive in O'Neill and the game was even 1-1.

That fourth inning run was the only one allowed by Terry in the game. He pitched six innings and matched his single game high as a professional with eight strikeouts. Terry walked two, but got a no decision.

Wisconsin went back in front in the bottom of the seventh inning. Johnny Davis was hit by a pitch from Clinton reliever Ricardo Peireira with one out. Davis stole second with two outs. Michael Ratterree doubled to left-center on the next pitch to drive in Davis for a 2-1 lead.

Rattlers reliever Chad Thompson took over for Seth Harvey, who had pitched a scoreless seventh, to start the eighth. Austin Wilson doubled with one out. Thompson got the second out with a strikeout, but DeCarlo singled to center to drive in Wilson with the tying run. Justin Seager kept the inning going with a single to left on the next pitch. Then, Jeff Zimmerman lined an 0-1 pitch from Thompson to the gap in left-center to drive in two runs and the LumberKings were up 4-2.

Aaron Brooks pitched a 1-2-3 bottom of the eighth inning. Omar Garcia started the Wisconsin ninth with a single off Brooks. Angel Ortega lined the next pitch towards right-center field, but second baseman Martin Peguero made a leaping grab for the first out and fired to first to double Garcia off first base. Brooks got the final out on a popout to short and the LumberKings held on for the win.

Ratterree had three hits, including two doubles, on the night. Ratterree now has 52 extra-base hits this season.

The loss also dropped the Timber Rattlers out of a tie with the Cedar Rapids Kernels for the second half Western Division lead and allowed the Peoria Chiefs to pick up a game in the second half Western Division Wild Card race. The Kernels won 12-5 at Beloit and the Peoria Chiefs won 4-2 in 14 innings at Beloit. The Rattlers trail Cedar Rapids by a game and lead Peoria by two games with twenty games remaining in the second half.

Game two of the series is Wednesday night at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium. Preston Gainey (4-7, 4.07) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Clinton has named Seon-Gi Kim (1-2, 2.92) as their starter. Game time is 7:05pm.

Thrivent and the Timber Rattlers invite fans to bring in school supplies to donate to the Stuff the Bus Drive before the game on Wednesday night. I would feel better about Franly Mallen if he wasn't hitting .225 on the season with 25 errors. He's definitely going to be a project with that high leg kick trigger and and his defensive issues.

The other high profile signing signing from 2013 is holding his own well though. Nicholas Pierre is hitting .325 over his last 10 though somehow he's committed 8 errors in the OF this season.

Joantgel Segovia just keeps on keeping on now hitting .376 on the season, I sincerely hope both Pierre and Segovia get the bump stateside for 2015.

Final: Brevard County 5, Daytona 1 (Game One)

Roache, Wagner power 'Tees to 5-1 victory over Cubs

Tyler Wagner goes six innings to tie league-lead in wins with 12

By Justin Rocke / Brevard County Manatees

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Behind a strong start from Tyler Wagner and a mammoth blast by Victor Roache, the Brevard County Manatees defeated the Daytona Cubs, 5-1 in game one of Tuesday's doubleheader at Radiology Associates Field at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.

After losing his first decision since June 3 in his previous outing, Wagner (12-5, 1.68) came out and befuddled the Cubs' (28-20 second half, 54-62 overall) bats.

The Florida State League Player of the Month for July yielded just one unearned run on five hits over six frames. Wagner walked three and punched out seven en route to tying Bradenton's Chad Kuhl for the league-lead in wins with 12.

With tonight's outing, Wagner is now 4-0 in five starts against the Cubs. In 28 innings against Daytona, the FSL All-Star has surrendered just two earned runs, which is good for a superb 0.64 earned run average.

The Manatees' (24-24, 60-54) offense was vibrant behind Wagner, exploding for all five of their runs in the top of the fourth inning.

Trailing 1-0, Cameron Garfield started it all with a bloop single to center field. With Roache at the dish, Cubs starter Juan Paniagua (1-3, 6.00) quickly fell behind, 3-0.

After being given the green light, Roache took a big hack at the next pitch. The former first-round pick put the ball into orbit and hammered it over the batting cages beyond left field fence. Apparently, the ball finished its flight by one-hopping into the Halifax River located beyond the cages.

The colossal shot was Roache's team-leading 15th home run of the year and it put Brevard in front, 2-1.

However, the rally was not over. Mike Garza followed the homer with a single to left and advanced to second on a ground out.

On the first pitch, Brandon Macias smoked a line drive into right field. Rock Shoulders, who normally serves as the Cubs designated hitter or first baseman, misread the ball and initially came in before realizing he needed to go back.

By the time that happened, it was too late. Macias' ball flew over his head and banged up against the wall. Garza came home to score on the RBI double and the 'Tees now lead, 3-1.

Nathan Orf then advanced Macias to third on a ground out to short and Orlando Arcia reached on a walk after a nine-pitch battle with Paniagua.

With two away, Tyrone Taylor grounded a ball deep in the hole at short. Wes Darvill, playing in just his fourth game at shortstop with Daytona, made a backhand stop, but threw high to first.

Dan Vogelbach leaped off the bag to try and make the play; however his attempt to tag the speedy Taylor came up empty. Macias scored and Arcia moved up to second on the throwing error to extend the advantage to 4-1.

That was the final batter Paniagua would face, as left-hander Nathan Dorris come out of the bullpen to try and stop the bleeding.

Michael Reed greeted the reliever rudely; as he smacked the first pitch he delivered into center for a base-hit. As Arcia raced for home, Taylor tried to advance to third. Jacob Hannemann's throw came into third base and Taylor was caught heading towards the bag.

Thanks to quick thinking, Taylor stayed in the rundown long enough to make sure Arcia scored safely. The 'Tees center fielder was ultimately tagged out, but Brevard County now cushioned its lead to 5-1.

That was the final run Paniagua would be charged with. The Dominican Republic native took his third loss in four starts with the Cubs. Paniagua lasted just 3.2 innings and surrendered five runs - three earned - on seven hits, three walks and three strikeouts.

With Brevard County still in front 5-1 in the seventh, Stephen Peterson came on to close out the victory. Despite allowing a two-out single to Gioskar Amaya, it took the left-hander just nine pitches to seal the win.

In the triumph, Brevard County claimed the I-95 Trophy for the first time since its inception back in 2007. The hardware is awarded to the winner of the season series between the Manatees and Cubs.

'Tees fall short in 3-2 walk-off loss to Cubs

Michael Reed clubs his fifth home run of the season in defeat

By Justin Rocke / Brevard County Manatees

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Brevard County Manatees dropped game two of Tuesday's doubleheader, as the Daytona Cubs walked-off with a 3-2 victory at Radiology Associates Field at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.

With the game deadlocked at two heading to the bottom of the seventh, Chadd Krist started the final frame for Daytona (29-20 second half, 55-62 overall) with a four-pitch walk.

On the next pitch, Bijan Rademacher laced a single into right field. Krist held up at second and all of a sudden the Cubs had the winning run in scoring position with nobody out.

Brevard County (24-25, 60-55) brought the corners in expecting a bunt from Gioskar Amaya and that is exactly what they got.

After popping up a bunt earlier in the game, Amaya laid a perfect sacrifice down the third base line. However, third baseman Brandon Macias and pitcher Taylor Williams (0-1, 2.25 ERA) had a miscommunication on who was supposed to be where.

Williams fielded the ball and turned to third base to get the force, but with Macias charging in, no one was there. The 'Tees starter then turned and threw to first to try and get Amaya, but the throw was low and got past Mike Garza.

Krist was able to motor home from second to give the Cubs the walk-off victory, 3-2.

It was a sour end to a strong start from the right-hander. Williams, whose first start was cut to only two innings thanks to an hour-long rain delay in Tampa on Wednesday afternoon, took his first loss at the Advanced-A level.

The Brewers' fourth-round pick from 2013 yielded all three of Daytona's runs - just two earned - on seven hits over six-plus innings. He walked two and struck out three in defeat.

Brevard County initially jumped out in front by tallying a run in the third and fourth innings.

Cubs starter Tayler Scott (7-8, 4.31) retired the first seven batters he faced before issuing a one-out walk to Greg Hopkins.

With Brandon Macias at the plate, Hopkins broke for second base. The catcher Krist's throw was late and the 'Tees now had the go-ahead run in scoring position.

Later in the at-bat, Macias poked a ball down the right field line. Hopkins scored easily and Macias chugged into second with an RBI double to give the Manatees the lead, 1-0.

In the fourth, it was Michael Reed who created the offense. After taking what he thought was ball four for a strike, the right-hander swinger slammed a ball to deep left field.

Kyle Schwarber chased it back to the wall, but Reed's shot carried over the fence for a home run. The solo blast was Reed's career-high fifth home run of the season and it gave Brevard a two-run advantage.

Daytona rallied back to tie with by scoring in the fifth and sixth innings.

After Billy McKinney started the frame with a double off the wall in right, Chadd Krist slapped a ball into left for an RBI single to trim the lead to 2-1.

The Cubs had a chance to tie and take the lead in that very inning, but Williams buckled down. After making a throwing error on a fielder's choice and a uncorking a wild pitch to put runners at second and third, Williams struck out Marco Hernandez looking to keep Brevard in front.

However, the Cubs were still able to tie it up in the following inning. With runners at the corners thanks to back-to-back singles by Schwarber and Dan Vogelbach, Wes Darvill lofted a fly ball to center field.

With the Manatees outfielders playing in to cut off any bloop hits, Darvill was able to make Tyrone Taylor tail back on the fly ball. The ball was deep enough, as Schwarber scored easily on the sacrifice fly to knot the game at two.

Scott did not factor into the decision for the Cubs, but was integral in keeping them in the game. The South Africa native allowed both of Brevard's runs on five hits over six frames. He walked two and struck out five.

Yao-Lin Wang, who was activated off the disabled list between games, recorded the win for the Cubs after tossing a spotless top of the seventh.

Following the off day tomorrow, Brevard County and Daytona will battle in another doubleheader, this time at Space Coast Stadium. First pitch of game one is slated for 5:05 p.m. with game two scheduled to begin a half-hour after the first game's completion.

The Manatees are slated to throw a duo of left-handed pitchers to face a lefty-laden Cubs lineup. Hobbs Johnson (11-7, 2.86) will go in game one against Daytona's right-hander Jose Rosario (4-7, 5.60). In game two, Mike Strong (1-1, 2.45), who was perfect through 5.1 innings in his last outing, will make the spot start against another righty in Justin Amlung (3-3, 5.24).

Sounds Lose Road Trip Opener, 8-2

Nashville Sounds

http://www.milb.com/assets/images/9/0/4/84286904/cuts/Clark_0711_lyyhbke3_ea3phv6l.jpg

(Mike Strasinger / Nashville Sounds)

EL PASO, Texas - The Nashville Sounds opened their road trip on the short end of an 8-2 loss to El Paso on Tuesday evening at Southwest University Park.

The defeat snapped the Sounds' four-game winning streak. Nashville (66-57) had its division lead cut to just a half-game over cross-state rival Memphis, which won in Albuquerque.

First baseman Matt Clark homered during his 2-for-4 evening, the lone multi-hit effort for Nashville.

The Sounds fell behind 3-0 in the first inning. Alex Castellanos led off with a triple off Jay Jackson and later scored the game's first run on a Cody Decker sacrifice fly. Adam Moore made upped the El Paso lead to 3-0 with a two-out, two-run homer to center, the catcher's 10th big fly of the year.

Nashville missed an outstanding scoring opportunity in the second after loading the bases with one out against El Paso starter Juan Oramas. The right-hander struck out Jackson and Logan Schafer in succession to escape the jam unscathed.

El Paso stretched its lead to 4-0 in the bottom of the second when Rico Noel drew a leadoff walk from Jackson and later scored on a grounder.

The Sounds missed another scoring opportunity in the third after placing runners on second and third with no outs against Oramas.

Taylor Lindsey (3-for-4) increased the home team's lead to 6-0 in the third when he blasted a two-run homer to right off Jackson, the third sacker's tenth roundtripper of the season. Moore, who preceded Lindsey by drawing a walk, also scored on the blast.

Jackson (0-1) drew a loss in his first decision in two starts since joining the Sounds after allowing six runs over three frames of action.

Nashville got onto the scoreboard in the fifth when Schafer led off with a double and came home on a Jeremy Hermida sacrifice fly.

After El Paso got that run back in the bottom of the fifth, Clark slugged a massive solo homer to right in the top of the sixth to chase Oramas from the contest and make it a 7-2 game. The longball was Clark's sixth of the season.

Oramas (6-6) squared his record on the year by earning the win for El Paso after limiting the Sounds to two runs on seven hits in 5 1/3 innings of work.

El Paso closed out the scoring with a run against Alfredo Figaro in the eighth, bringing the score to its final 8-2 standing.

The teams continue the series with another 8:05 p.m. CT matchup on Wednesday. Right-hander Donovan Hand (1-7, 5.40) will make the start for the Sounds and face rehabbing San Diego Padres ace Andrew Cashner, who will make his first rehab start for El Paso.

Nashville Boxscore

Arcenio Leon pitched a scoreless inning so there's that....

10 hits and just 1 run so predictably the Sounds were awful with runners in scoring position all night.

Final: Idaho Falls 3, Helena 1

Pitching duel ends in a Chukars win

By Dustin Daniel / Helena Brewers

The Helena Brewers (6-10) fell 3-1 in the series opener of a three-game set Tuesday to the Idaho Falls Chukars (8-7).

Brandon Woodruff had one of his best outings of the year in the start for Helena. The righty pitched five innings, giving up just one run on three hits and striking out a season-high four batters.

The Brewers would take the first lead of the game by way of a Sthervin Matos home run. It was a solo shot over the scoreboard to pull him into a tie for the team lead with Mitch Meyer. Both have six round-trippers this season.

The Chukars would take control shortly after. They tied it in the fifth on an RBI grounder from Luis Valenzuela and grabbed the lead in the sixth on a fielding error by Gregory Munoz. With two on and two out, Munoz let a slow roller get through his legs to score two unearned runs.

That would give Devin Williams (4-6) the loss and a decision in 10 straight appearances.

The Brewers and the Chukars will face off in the second game of their three-game series Wednesday from Kindrick Field. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.

Helena Box Score

Offensively, Helena managed seven hits and the only multi-hit game came from Mitch Meyer who went 2-for-4. The Brewers were 0-for-9 with runners in scoring position. Despite the loss, Helena pitchers combined to only give up one earned run on the night. In a relief appearance, Devin Williams pitched four innings allowing four hits and two runs (no earned runs), and no walks while striking out three.

Brewers 2-run error the difference in 3-1 loss to Idaho Falls

By Curt Synness /Helena Independent Record

Thom Bridge/ Independent Record- Becoming airborn, Luis Aviles hurls the ball to first base after a Chukars batter hit a grounder in the second inning. The Brewer hosted the Idaho Falls Chukars in their first home game in a week-and-a-half.

Idaho Falls won the first contest of a three-game series against the Helena Brewers Tuesday, 3-1.

The Brewers’ downfall in the pitchers’ duel at Kindrick legion Field came in the sixth inning on a two-run error. With the score tied at 1-all, the Chukars had men on second and third base with two down.

Then Mike Hill rapped a routine grounder to second that appeared to be the end of the inning. But Helena’s Gregory Munoz let the ball go between his legs into right field, as both Robert Pehl and Samir Duenez scored. The visitors went up by two, which turned out to be the deciding margin.

Idaho Falls improves to 28-25 overall and 8-7 in the second half, while Helena slips to 19-35, 6-10. The Brewers are sitting in third place in the Pioneer League’s Northern Division standings.

The name of the game was pitching, with both club’s hurlers limiting the opposition to seven hits each.

The Chukars used three pitchers on the night — Sugar Ray Marimon, Austin Fairchild and Cruz Guevara — with Fairchild earning the win.

Fairchild worked 2 2/3 hitless innings, striking out four.

Brandon Woodruff started for the hosts and worked four frames, giving up three hits and one run, while fanning four. Reliever Devin Williams went the final four stanzas and took the hard-luck loss. He permitted four hits and two runs, whiffing three Chukars batsmen.

All three of Idaho’s runs were unearned.

Helena’s lone run came on designated hitter Sthervin Matos’ solo home run in the fourth.

The home team had a couple chances to add to their total, but came up empty handed both times. In the second, the Brewers had runners on second and third with none out; and in the third inning they had a runner from third nipped at the plate on a high chopper back to the pitcher.

Idaho’s Wander Franco and Helena’s Mitch Meyer were the only players with multi-hit games.

Despite the glaring two-run error in the fourth, the Brewers amassed several outstanding defensive plays on the night, highlighted by a couple of sparkling web gems by shortstop Luis Aviles.

In the second inning, Aviles, a 6-foot-1, 170-pound 19 year old from Miami, Florida, charged a slow bouncer behind the mound and gunned down his man at first. Then in the sixth frame, he recorded all three outs. On one play, Aviles went far to his right on a grounder, and stylishly swooped up the ball and fired to first in one motion to get the out by half a step.

Also flashing some decent defense were catcher Natanael Mejia and Mitch Meyer, the right fielder, along with a fine throw by Mejia and tag by Aviles in the seventh to cut down an attempted steal of second.

The two team meet again tonight at Kindrick Legion Field for the second game of the series.

First pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m.

Not just “at Night” anymore.

Huntsville Box Score

Really nice to see Yadiel Rivera's bat progress since his promotion to AA. Kind of makes me wonder how much it would help guys like Roache and Garfield to get out of Brevard and really gets me excited for Arcia and Taylor. I'm not sure what to make of Nick Shaw. He doesn't stand out in any area except his ability to take a walk and get on base, but he does that so well (on base percentage near .400) and his ability to play multiple positions could make him a darkhorse utility guy down the road. Drew Gagnon has had a couple of rough outings recently but pitched well in this one, giving up just the two runs. Nice to see him work deep in the game. David Goforth with a 1-2-3 ninth.

Huntsville Play-By-Play

Rivera led off the fifth with a home run, but walking the pitcher always spells trouble and the Stars cashed in with a couple more as well

Rivera's Huntsville numbers so far are so much better than anything he has done before that I'm trying to stay tempered in my expectations, but he has certainly done himself a ton of good in the rankings the last month+, and I hope he keeps it up.
