Nashville Sounds

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Nashville Sounds (66-56) and third baseman Jason Rogers continued their impressive nights with a 4-2 win over the Round Rock Express in the nightcap of Sunday's doubleheader.

Rogers, who went 3-for-3 with two home runs in the first game of the night, took another ball out of the park in the third inning of game two. The three-run blast marks his seventh dinger since joining the Sounds on June 27.

Sounds shortstop Hector Gomez led off the inning with his team-leading 13th home run of the season, which tied the game 1-1.

Sounds starter Ariel Pena (9-7) helped keep the Express in check, allowing only one run on five hits over 5 2/3 innings of work. His lone blunder was a home run allowed to Express designated hitter Michael Choice, who later homered off closer Rob Wooten.

Pena fired eight strikeouts in his 86-pitch outing to pick up his ninth win of the season. He also walked a pair.

Reliever Brent Leach picked up the final out in the sixth inning to strand a pair of Pena's runners, while Wooten collected his 10th save.

Logan Schafer led the team with two hits, but it was Rogers who delivered the knockout punch.

The win keeps Nashville two game ahead of Memphis for first-place in the American Conference Southern Division with 22 games to play.

The Sounds will try for the five-game series sweep in Monday's 7:05 p.m. finale. Right-hander Donovan Hand (1-7, 5.40) will make the start for the Sounds and face Round Rock southpaw Ryan Feierabend (8-5, 4.54).

Nashville Game 2 Boxscore

Have a day Jason Rogers! He nearly doubled his AAA HR output in a single day.

I believe Ariel Pena is destined for the BP but starts like this one prove that the door as a starter isn't closed yet, there's still hope... It will be interesting to see what happens with Pena, Hellweg, and Segura going into next year. A trade that once looked like a slam dunk win is on shaky footing these days with Hellweg's surgery, Segura under performance at the plate, and Pena's continued rollercoaster in AAA.

I've noticed that Johnny Davis' walk rate has been creeping up, and he is getting close to 1BB/ 10 ABs. Definitely nice to see some development from him over the course of the season, he still has a long way to go but I take improvement as a good sign.

Its somewhat dangerous to get to excited about guys on a hot streak, but Rogers has definitively demonstrated himself to be a better prospect than Morris, walks more, hits for a better average and has done more at AAA. I kind of had them even coming into the season because Rogers had always been a little on the old side, but he just keeps getting the job done. I hope he has a good September.

Rivera has suddenly made himself interesting. I want to see more, but its nice to think there might be another option if Segura can't get it figured out again.

Rogers plates nine runs in Sounds' sweep

Third baseman homers three times during pair of wins over Express

By Tyler Maun / MiLB.com

Just three innings into a long Sunday, Jason Rogers had a good day under his belt already. But there was a lot more to come.

The Brewers infield prospect homered three times and drove in nine runs between two games as Triple-A Nashville swept a doubleheader from Round Rock with wins of 13-4 and 4-2 at Greer Stadium.

"It was a long day today, but we played good, got the 'W's," Rogers said. "It feels good. I got good pitches to hit and put good swings on them."

With three runs already home in the second inning, the third baseman connected on a two-run single to extend Nashville's lead. He followed Jeremy Hermida's RBI double with a three-run homer in the fourth.

Two innings later, the 26-year-old belted a one-out solo home run.

In the nightcap, Rogers sparked the Sounds again, breaking a tie with a three-run homer in the bottom of the third.

"I felt real good," he said. "[Round Rock starter Justin Germano], we'd faced him before. I knew what he had and how they were going to pitch me, so I was trying to have a good approach and put some good swings on the ball."

Over his last 10 games, Rogers is batting .387 (12-for-31) with four homers and 11 RBIs.

"When I first got called up, they were pitching me a lot different than Double-A," he said. "I had to make that quick adjustment. I got in a groove, and I'm taking it game by game, at-bat by at-bat.

"In Double-A, they pitch off their fastball. Here in Triple-A, you've got veterans. You've got guys who have been in the big leagues. You see a lot more breaking balls. They want you to swing at their pitches, so I had to make that adjustment to get my pitch."

The victory put the Sounds at 66-56 on the season and atop the Pacific Coast League American Southern Division.

"We're playing good baseball right now," Rogers said. "We're in first place. We've got two, two-and-a-half more weeks to go, and these games are important. We're doing a good job.

"I want to get to the playoffs. The Huntsville team, the Double-A team I was with, they're going to the playoffs. This team, we were just two games behind when I first got called up. My goal is to do my part to help this team get to the playoffs."

Nashville got a quality start from Taylor Jungmann in the opener. Jungmann (6-5) struck out nine over six innings, allowing two runs on four hits while walking two. In the finale, Ariel Pena (9-7) gave up a run on five hits while striking out eight and walking two in 5 2/3 innings.

Rob Wooten closed out the Sounds nightcap, giving up a run in the seventh but picking up his 10th save.
