Final: Huntsville 13, @Birmingham 0

Stars Blast the Barons

Steve Jarnicki, Huntsville Stars

Birmingham, AL - A day after the Huntsville Stars were shutout, they came back Sunday afternoon and routed the Birmingham Barons 13-0 to win four out of five in the series at Regions Field in Birmingham.

The Stars put together four different innings of scoring three runs.

Already leading 1-0, the Stars plated three runs in the top of the third against Birmingham starter Myles Jaye (3-10). Hector Gimenez stroked a two-run double and Josh Prince added a sacrifice fly making it 4-0.

Jaye, who took the loss, only lasted three innings and allowed four runs (two earned) on four hits.

In the top of the fourth, the Stars received back to back RBI singles from Nick Shaw and Josh Fellhauer. Giminez doubled home a run for a 7-0 lead.

The Stars expanded their lead in the fifth. Yadiel Rivera and Shaw produced back to back RBI singles. Rivera also scored on a wild pitch for a 10-0 lead.

The Stars fourth and final three-run inning came in the seventh. Rivera led off with a solo home run, his first Double-A home run.

Gimenez contributed his fourth RBI of the game on a sacrifice fly. Prince doubled down the left field line scoring Fellhauer making it 13-0 Stars.

Brent Suter (10-8), Eric Marzec, Greg Holle and Kevin Shackelford combined for the seven-hit shutout of the Barons.

Suter pitched five scoreless innings and only allowed three hits.

The Stars offense racked up fourteen hits. Shaw went 3-4 with 2 RBI. Gimenez went 2-5 with 4 RBI. Rivera had a 3-5 performance with 2 RBI.

The Stars (24-26, 70-50) travel back to Huntsville to have an off day Monday. The Stars will continue their ten-game road trip Tuesday in Kodak, Tennessee against the Tennessee Smokies, the Double-A Affiliate of the Chicago Cubs. RHP Drew Gagnon (8-6, 3.76) will start for Huntsville. Tennessee will have RHP Felix Pena (1-1, 4.82) on the mound. The game can be heard Tuesday starting at 6:00 CDT on 92.9 FM, 1450 AM and wtkiradio.com.

Huntsville Box Score

The Stars put 25 men on base via 14 hits, ten walks, and an HBP. What a rout. As pretty a box score as one might imagine, enjoy!

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

Wei-Chung Wang pitched three innings in a rehabilitation start for the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers Sunday at Dozer Park in Peoria, Illinois. (Peoria Journal Star/Dennis Sievers)

PEORIA, IL - The Peoria Chiefs won't go away. The Midwest League affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 6-4 on Sunday afternoon at Dozer Park. The win pulled the Chiefs back to within three games of the Timber Rattlers in the second half Western Division playoff standings with 21 games remaining in the season.

Peoria (62-56 overall, 25-24 second half) scored an unearned run against Wei-Chung Wang in the bottom of the first. Vaughn Bryan walked to start the inning. Wang got CJ McElroy, Jr to send a double play ball to short, but the ball was missed for an error that put runners on the corners. McElroy would steal second to give Peoria runners at second and third. Justin Ringo's grounder to second was enough to get Bryan home for a 1-0.

Jose Pena put the Rattlers (64-54, 28-21) in front in the top of the second inning with a two-run single to left with two outs.

Wang, who is on a MLB rehabilitation assignment for the Milwaukee Brewers, worked a scoreless second and got the first two outs of the bottom of the third inning. But, McElroy singled to right and stole second. Carson Kelly followed with a single to drive in McElroy with the tying run. Wang got Ringo to send a slow grounder to first, but Ringo beat Wang to the base for an infield single to keep the inning alive. Ronald Castillo would be next and his single drove in Kelly for a 3-2 Peoria lead.

Wang pitched three innings, allowed three runs - two earned - on four hits with a walk and three strikeouts.

Barrett Astin relieved Wang in the bottom of the fourth and walked Cesar Valera to start the inning. Rafael Medina followed with a two-run homer and Peoria was up 5-3.

Wisconsin would close to within a run with single runs in the fifth and sixth innings. Pena lead off the Wisconsin fifth inning with a home run. David Denson doubled to start the sixth and scored on a sacrifice fly by Johnny Davis to close to within 5-4.

But, the Chiefs added a run in the bottom of the sixth inning against Chris Razo on a sacrifice fly by Richy Pedroza to make it 6-4. The Rattlers would not threaten to score after that.

The win earned the Chiefs a split in the four-game series at Dozer Park. The teams will meet again in Peoria in a three-game series from August 21-23.

The Timber Rattlers have their final scheduled off day of the regular season on Monday. They return to action on Tuesday night at home against the Clinton LumberKings. Clint Terry (3-2, 2.41) is the scheduled starting pitcher for Wisconsin. Clinton plans to send Carlos Misell (8-9, 4.30) to the mound as their starter. Game time is 7:05pm.

Milwaukee Brewers catcher Martin Maldonado was a Timber Rattler in 2009 and he is the next bobblehead in the 20th Anniversary Series. The first 1,000 fans to attend Tuesday's game will receive the Martin Maldonado bobblehead courtesy of Baycom.

Tuesday is a Throwback Night as part of the 20th Anniversary season presented by Bergstrom Automotive. Tickets are thrown back to 1995 prices of $5 for box seats, $4 for reserved bleacher seats, and $3 for grass seats. Plus, look for a special item at the concession stands to be thrown back to its 1995 price and The Timber Rattlers players and coaches will be wearing jerseys based on the ones worn by the 1995 Rattlers.

Baycom also presents Emergency Services Night. Police, Fire, first responders, and other emergency services workers are honored before and during the game.

Wisconsin Boxscore

Wei-Chung Wang is still very raw, not covering 1B cost him an earned run, but is typical of the sort of mistakes that are made at this level. I was out and about so I didn't get to listen to the game and unfortunately don't have any more insights than that. I will say that I'm thrilled he's going to be around next year, I would hope he starts at A+ but I guess we'll have to let that one play out.

Wisconsin pounded out 10 hits and walked 3 times, but only 2 of those hits were for extra bases and the Rattlers didn't string hits together enough to score more than 4 runs. Omar Garcia (2-4), Chris McFarland (2-4), David Denson (2-4,2B), and Jose Pena (2-4,HR) had the multi hit games for the T-Rats.

Barrett Astin has been getting pounded over his last 10 games with just 2 scoreless relief outings in that span of innings. On the flip side Chris Razo has gone scoreless in 6 of his last 10 appearances.

Rogers Homers Twice, Drives In Six To Power Sounds To 13-4 Win In Twinbill Opener

Nashville Sounds

(Mike Strasinger / Nashville Sounds)

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Third baseman Jason Rogers belted a pair of homers and drove in a career-high six RBIs to lead the Nashville Sounds to a 13-4 win over the visiting Round Rock Express in the first game of a doubleheader on Sunday evening at Greer Stadium.

The 13 runs scored matched a season high for Nashville (65-56), which extended its division lead to two games over cross-state rival Memphis.

Sounds right fielder Jeremy Hermida also enjoyed a strong night at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and season-high four RBIs.

On the hill, Taylor Jungmann (6-5) authored a quality start to pick up his second win in his last three trips to the hill for the Sounds. The right-hander allowed two runs, both on solo homers, and matched his career high with nine strikeouts over his six innings of action.

The Sounds jumped out to a quick lead in the bottom of the first inning against Round Rock starter Luke Jackson, as the first four batters of the frame reached base and scored.

Hermida put Nashville on the board with an RBI double that plated Logan Schafer before Rogers (3-for-3) delivered the big hit of the initial frame, a line-drive three-run homer to left. The blast was the infielder's fifth of the year and gave the home team a 4-0 lead.

Nashville tacked on three more runs in the second against Jackson (1-1), who suffered his first Triple-A loss of the year after giving up nine runs in one-plus innings of work.

The Sounds loaded the bases with a Hector Gomez (3-for-3) double and a pair of walks before Eugenio Velez (2-for-4) ripped an RBI single and Hermida followed by smacking a two-run double off the right-center wall to make it a 7-0 game. Rogers continued his big evening by chasing Jackson from the contest with a two-run single to left that stretched the Nashville lead to nine.

Round Rock right fielder Jared Hoying put the visitors on the board in the fourth inning with the first hit of the night against Jungmann, a one-out solo homer to right-center. The 432-foot blast was the slugger's 20th big fly of the year.

Rogers swatted his second homer of the day in the fourth, a one-out shot to left off Express reliever Lisalverto Bonilla, that upped his RBI total to six to match his career best , established last season.

Express center fielder Ryan Strausborger -- who, like Rogers, enjoyed a two-homer contest -- made it a 10-2 contest in the top of the sixth with an opposite-field solo homer to left-center, his first roundtripper of the year.

Nashville wrapped up its scoring with three runs in the home half of the fifth off Jimmy Reyes. Velez and Hermida each contributed RBI singles in the frame and Gomez scored on a wild pitch to stretch the lead to 13-2.

Strausborger connected for his second home run of the day in the seventh, belting a two-run shot to left off Sounds reliever Kyle Heckathorn to bring the score to its final 13-4 standing.

Nashville Game 1 Boxscore

Taylor Jungmann had a real nice game, I'd like to see him close on a high note and be ready to provide quality spot start depth in Milwaukee next season.

Jason Rogers and the rest of the sounds really busted out the whupping stick in game 1, I hope they have some runs in them for Game 2 as well.

Final: Helena 7, Ogden 3

Sharkey leads Brewers to 7-3 win

By Dustin Daniel / Helena Brewers

The Helena Brewers (6-9) snapped a four-game losing streak on Sunday with a 7-3 win over the Ogden Raptors (8-6).

Zach Hirsch (1-1) had his best outing of the year for Helena, pitching five shutout innings in the start. Hirsch would allow just four hits and strike out three batters.

The Brewers struck first in the third and would never trail in the ballgame. Edgardo Rivera scored on an RBI single from Alan Sharkey to get the scoring started. Sharkey was 3-for-5 with a solo home run, his first of professional baseball, and three RBI. He is now on a team-high seven-game hitting streak.

The bulk of the scoring came in a four-run, five-hit fourth inning. Gregory Munoz had a 2-RBI double to highlight the frame.

The Raptors would try to make a late rally in the ninth, scoring a run and putting a man on second, but Ryan Deeter struck out Jimmy Allen to close out the night and pull the Brewers to within three games of first place in the Pioneer League North Division.

The Brewers now head back to Helena to host the Idaho Falls Chukars in a three-game series. First pitch on Tuesday from Kindrick Field is set for 7:05 p.m.

Helena Box Score

Congratulations to Alan Sharkey who in his 407th plate appearance in professional baseball put his first ball over the wall. That first career home run had to feel good for the first baseman selected in the 13th round out of Coral Springs (FL) High School in 2012. Brandon Diaz was 1-for-1 while working three walks. Helena went 5-for-10 with runners in scoring positions, including a key two RBI double in the 4th inning by Gregory Munoz. Munoz finished 2-for-3 and had his 12th stolen base of the season. Also with a multi-hit game was Tucker Neuhaus who finished 2-for-5.

It seems only a matter of time (September) before Jason Rogers (Columbus State, GA) becomes the first player from the 32nd round of the 2010 draft to make the big leagues. What a great story!

Notice RHP Tommy Toledo was drafted by the Twins in that round, but didn't sign. Toledo has quite the draft history.

I'm absolutely shocked that a total of six players from the 31st, 30th, and 29th rounds of that draft have already made the majors.

True, but actually only four signed that year -- Taylor Hill would go on to be a 6th round pick, Marco Gonzales a 1st rounder.

Chiefs beat Rattlers 6-4 in rehab outing against Brewers' Wang

By Dave Eminian, Peoria Journal Star

PEORIA -- Wisconsin welcomed Milwaukee Brewers reliever Wei-Chung Wang in the clubhouse Saturday night by requiring him to sing the national anthem as initiation.

The Chiefs welcomed him Sunday on the mound with a run in the first inning -- and four straight singles with two outs in the third inning -- to launch a 6-4 victory before 5,807 at Dozer Park.

It was a must-have game for the Chiefs, who shaved their deficit to three games behind Wisconsin in the Western Division playoff chase.

"I feel really good, totally," Wang said. "I felt like every pitch was working, felt healthy and like I'm back to where I was earlier."

Wang, a Rule 5 Draft acquisition last winter by the Brewers who overcame Tommy John surgery in 2012, had never pitched in the minors at the class A, AA or AAA levels until Sunday.

He had an 11.12 ERA in 13 appearances this season with Milwaukee when the Brewers put him on the DL on July 10 with shoulder tightness.

The Chiefs touched him for a 1-0 lead in the first inning without a hit, packaging a walk, error and groundout that plated Vaughn Bryan.

Wang did not allow a hit until Chiefs center fielder C.J. McElroy Jr., singled to right field with two outs in the third inning, but that opened a barrage of four straight singles.

McElroy stole second base off the lefty, then came around to score on a two-out single to right field from catcher Carson Kelly for a 2-2 tie.

The Chiefs jumped on top, 3-2, when Ronald Castillo punched a two-out single through the hole at second to drive home Kelly.

"They got those singles off me, but the one was because I didn't get to first base quick enough to cover, that was my fault," said Wang, who finished with three innings, 4 hits, 3 runs (two earned), 1 walk and 3 strikeouts on 51 pitches (36 strikes). "I like the progress I'm making. I don't know what the Brewers plan is for me yet, but I'm expecting to stay here for now and pitch more for Wisconsin."

Chiefs third baseman Rafael Medina blasted a two-run homer off the protective netting beyond left field against reliever Barrett Astin for a 5-2 lead in the fourth inning.

Jose Pena homered off Peoria lefty starter Kyle Helisek in the fifth to cut Peoria's lead to 5-3. David Denson doubled in the sixth, moved to third on a groundout, then scored on a sacrifice fly by Johnny Davis to close to within 5-4.

The Chiefs answered in the sixth against former Illinois Valley Central star Chris Razo when Cesar Valera walked, Medina singled up the middle and Richy Pedroza plated Valera with a sacrifice foul fly out for a 6-4 lead.

Chiefs righty Kevin Herget threw three scoreless innings in relief, while Kyle Barraclough added a scoreless ninth for a save.

"I thought (Wang) was throwing well," McElroy Jr. said. "We attacked his fastball in the third inning. I wanted to put pressure on their defense, so once I got on, I took off with first movement.

"This was a game that felt like a playoff game for us. We knew we had to beat them. All we can do is continue to control our side."

CHIEFS BRIEFS: Illinois Valley Central product Chris Razo threw three innings in his homecoming relief appearance against the Chiefs on Sunday, allowing one run on 3 hits, 3 walks and 5 strikeouts. He has five career appearances against Peoria, with a 6.00 ERA, 12 hits, 6 walks and 11 strikeouts over 9 innings of work. ... Chiefs first baseman Justin Ringo had a three-hit game, while third baseman Rafael Medina and catcher Carson Kelly each had two.
