Manatees will be a late start at best. Tarp on the field as the game is supposed to start.

On the pregame, Parker Berberet reports that Damien Magnifico got a golf ball stuck in a tree during the Jorge Lopez benefit. Supposedly, there is something on twitter. Maybe one of the link reporters will come across that. By the way, Parker is really having a nice second half, BA up to .295 and OBP to .367 despite the fact that he doesn't get regular work.

Wisconsin wins big with 11-3 decision at Peoria

Coulter hits two homers, Halcomb collects four hits and homers, too

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

PEORIA, IL - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers solved Arturo Reyes on Saturday night and it led to an 11-3 victory at Dozer Park of the Peoria Chiefs. Clint Coulter hit a pair of homers and drove in five runs while Tristan Archer and Zach Quintana kept the Chiefs offense in check.

Reyes had made three appearances against the Timber Rattlers in 2014 prior to Saturday night. He had allowed three runs - two earned - and had struck out nineteen over sixteen innings versus Wisconsin. Those numbers changed in a big way in the third inning.

Wisconsin's outburst started with a bunt single by leadoff batter Johnny Davis. Chris McFarland followed with a double to the left field corner. The ball was bobbled and that was all Davis needed to race for the plate to score the first run of the game. Michael Ratterree drew a walk to put two runners on base. Arturo Reyes got the first out on a fly ball and that brought Coulter to the plate.

The Rattlers catcher hadn't homered since July 29 and the Rattlers hadn't had a home run since Taylor Brennan hit a grand slam against the Chiefs at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium on August 1. That changed when Coulter crushed a 3-1 pitch from Reyes nearly out of the stadium for a three-run homer and a 4-0 lead.

Taylor Brennan restarted the rally by drawing a walk after the Coulter home run. Dustin DeMuth and Halcomb followed with singles to load the bases. Jose Pena was next and his double to the wall in left drove in two runs for a 6-0 lead. That chased Reyes from the game.

Davis came back to the plate for the second time in the inning and lifted a sacrifice fly off reliever Steven Sabatino to knock in Halcomb for a 7-0 advantage.

David Denson doubled with one out in the top of the fourth inning to get Coulter back to the plate. Coulter drove a 1-0 pitch from Sabatino out of the stadium. The ball bounced on the street and came to a rest on the grass in front of the Caterpillar office building across the street. The Rattlers (64-53 overall, 28-20 second half) were up 9-0 after Coulter's nineteenth homer of 2014.

Rowan Wick got the Chiefs (61-56, 24-24) on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth. The inning started with Wisconsin starter Tristan Archer issuing a four-pitch walk to Juan Herrera and Justin Ringo reaching on catcher's interference. Archer got the first out on a strikeout, but Wick lined an opposite-field homer to left. The three-run shot cut Wisconsin's lead to 9-3.

That homer snapped Archer's scoreless streak at 15-2/3 innings. But, he just started another streak as he closed out his night with 2-2/3 more scoreless innings before turning the game over to Zach Quintana for the bottom of the seventh. Archer scattered five hits, three walks, and a hit batsman over his six innings. He struck out five and earned his sixth win of the season.

The Rattlers got their tenth run of the night in the top of the sixth inning when Denson scored from third with two outs on a wild pitch by Jhonny Polanco.

Halcomb provided the final run of the night for Wisconsin. The Rattlers shortstop hit a no doubt home run to left with two outs in the ninth inning. The solo shot was the first professional home run for Halcomb, who went 4-for-5 in Saturday's game.

Quintana allowed one hit over the final three innings and picked up his second save of the season.

The final game of the series - and Wisconsin's road trip - is scheduled for Sunday afternoon at Dozer Park. Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Wei-Chung Wang is scheduled to make the start for the Timber Rattlers as part of his Major League rehabilitation assignment. Kyle Helisek (0-0, 9.00) set to make his second start of the season for the Chiefs. Game time is 2:00pm. Tune in for the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM or IHeartRadio starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 1:40pm.

HOME RUNS:

WIS:

Clint Coulter (18th, 2 on in 3rd inning off Arturo Reyes, 1 out)

Clint Coulter (19th, 1 on in 4th inning off Steven Sabatino, 1 out)

Steve Halcomb (1st, 0 on in 9th inning off Blake McKnight, 2 out)

PEO:

Rowan Wick (3rd, 2 on in 4th inning off Tristan Archer, 1 out)

Wisconsin Boxscore

STOMP THE CARDS!

So Clint Coulter's (3-5, 2HR) offensive explosion tonight got me thinking and I went to look where the Rattlers were ranking team wise in HRs. With the injuries to Denson and McFarland coupled with the mid season power outages to Coulter and Pena the Rattlers have slipped from 1st all the way down to 5th in team HRs. There's no chance they catch Lake County who were up by 23 HRs coming into today's action.

Zach Quintana had a nice night allowing just 1 hit in his 3 IP while striking out 2 batters.

Coulter had a tough night behind the dish getting nailed with an error for Catcher's Interference and his 13th PB but made up for it with what he did offensively.

Chris McFarland's (3-5,2B) effort pushed his AVE back up to .300 even and David Denson (2-4,2B,BB) had a nice night as well. Denson has been a tad slow out of the gate coming back from his injury, hopefully he starts a nice hot streak after tonight. He's still got time to lift his OPS up past .750. That would be monumental considering his very slow April and lost injury time. Speaking of OPSing... McFarland's OPS is a very respectable .770 after today's game which is currently a full .100 higher than last season. Chris still needs defensive work but his offensive game has come a long way in just 1 season.

Steven Halcomb (4-5,HR) had his best day as a professional eclipsing his previous day which was a 3 hit effort on Aug 3rd.

Final: @Birmingham 5, Huntsville 0

Barons Blank Stars

Steve Jarnicki, Huntsville Stars

Birmingham, AL - The Birmingham Barons trio of pitchers Chris Bassitt, Nelvin Fuentes and Davis Cales combined for 19 strikeouts as the Barons blanked the Huntsville Stars 5-0 Saturday night at Regions Field.

Bassitt (1-0), the Birmingham starter, threw six shutout innings and limited the Stars to just three hits. Bassitt struck out eleven Stars.

Austin Ross (0-1) started for Huntsville in his Double-A debut and wound up taking the loss. The Stars defense let Ross down in the bottom of the second inning.

Kevan Smith and Joey DeMichele reached on back to back errors by shortstop Shea Vucinich and second baseman Nick Shaw.

Two batters later, Jeremy Farrell lined a two-run single into left center making it 2-0 Barons.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Barons had the bases loaded with two outs. With DeMichele trailing 0-2 against Ross, DeMichele lined a two-run single into center giving the Barons a 4-0 lead.

Ross pitched 4.2 innings, allowed seven hits and gave up four runs (two earned).

The Stars defense committed three errors in the game, and their third and final one in the sixth led to the Barons final run of the game.

Trayce Thompson hit a grounder to shortstop and Vucinich couldn’t’ get the ball out of his hands to start a potential doubleplay.

Josh Richmond followed with a sacrifice fly making it 5-0 Birmingham.

The Barons ended their seven game losing streak while the Stars had their four game winning streak snapped.

The Stars (23-26, 69-50) lead the Barons (23-25, 52-66) 3-1 in their five game series. The series finale will be Sunday afternoon. The Stars will have LHP Brent Suter (9-8, 4.24) on the mound. Birmingham will send RHP Myles Jaye (3-9, 5.85) to the hill. The game can be heard starting at 2:45 CDT on 92.9 FM, 1450 AM and wtkiradio.com.

Huntsville Box Score

Doesn't seem like Shea Vucinich already has 23 games at short this season, but the night off for Yadiel Rivera proved costly.

DH Nick Ramirez and 1B Joey Paciorek are going to siesta tonight wearing golden sombreros. Ramirez is having a miserable August, and is down to .239 with an astonishing 132 K's in 440 AB's. Actually, Ramirez is faring better in that regard than last year at Brevard (171 K's in 500 AB's - golly).

Too bad Shawn Zarraga's AAA stint was poor, his two hits here allow him to raise his 2014 AA average to .380 in 166 AB's.

Huntsville Game Log

Yes, RHP Austin Ross deserved better, but only slighly, as he did allow ten baserunners (beyond the errors) in 4.2 innings.

Wisconsin's ballclub might be pretty brutal next year. Helena box scores are painful to look at.

Ugly box score again tonight.

However, the championship 2012 Timber Rattlers (78-61) were preceded by a 30-46 2011 Helena club.

Final: Ogden 7, Helena 1

Ogden clinches series with 7-1 win

By Dustin Daniel / Helena Brewers

The Helena Brewers (5-9) were once again stymied offensively, falling to the Ogden Raptors (8-5) 7-1 on Saturday.

It was a group effort for the Raptors' pitching staff as three right-handers each tossed three innings a piece.

Trevor Oaks (4-0) would get the win pitching the fourth through sixth and allowing just two hits in shutout baseball.

The lone run of the game for Helena came in the third. Gregory Munoz led off the inning with a double and later scored on an RBI single from Edgardo Rivera to give the Brewers a 1-0 lead.

After that it was all Ogden with the Raptors scoring seven unanswered runs.

Three would cross the plate in the fourth on a singular play which involved three errors. It resulted in two runners coming in from first and second and Julian Leon coming all the way around to touch them all via the three errors. The Brewers tied a season-high with five errors total on the night.

Josh Uhen (1-3) made the start for Helena, pitching well despite picking up the wrong side of the decision. Uhen would go six innings tying a season-high for him, allowing six hits and striking out one.

The Brewers and the Raptors will face off in the finale of their three-game series Sunday from Lundquist Field. First pitch is set for 4:00 p.m.

Helena Box Score

The lone multi-hit performance for Helena was Mitch Meyer, he went 2-for-4 with a double. While Helena did commit five errors, three of them were charged to pitchers. Two errors on Josh Uhen (pickoff and throw) and one error on J.B. Kole (missed catch).

A little more detail in this description of the infamous play provided by the Ogden Raptors game report, Brewers' Three-Error Play Keys Raptors' Win...

Trailing 1-0 in the fourth inning, the Brewers made three errors in one play that allowed the Raptors to take the lead. Mike Ahmed and Cody Bellinger started the inning with consecutive singles. Julian Leon then hit a grounder to third, which got by Sthervin Matos for the first error. Helena left fielder Edgardo Rivera threw to home to try to get Ahmed trying to score from second. Rivera's throw got by the catcher Jack Cleary for the second error. Bellinger then tried to score from first, and Josh Uhen, who was backing up the play, tried to throw out Bellinger. Uhen's throw also got by the catcher for the third error as Leon, the batter, scored for a 3-1 lead.

No doubt the Brewers' Player Development Staff has multiple pitching success stories, so kudos to them (and Wily Peralta, Jimmy Nelson, Mike Fiers, and others) -- apparently, however, this was not one of their finer efforts:

Lefty Thielbar handles increased role in Twins bullpen

Phil Miller, the Star-Tribune

OAKLAND, Calif. – He nearly turns his back to the batter as he winds up, then whirls forcefully forward, using an exaggerated stride toward the plate to generate velocity as he releases the ball. If you were a coach teaching proper pitching mechanics, you would erase all video of Caleb Thielbar’s delivery, for fear kids would emulate his violent motion.

Wait, bad choice of words. “I don’t know if I’d say it’s violent — it’s explosive,” Thielbar said. “But the Twins didn’t try to change it. They’ve embraced it. And it’s worked out.”

It has, probably because of his unusual windup, not despite it. Thielbar hasn’t had a season as statistically successful as last year, except when it matters. His ERA of 3.13 is significantly higher than last year’s 1.76, but it’s due almost entirely to a four-game slump in mid-May, when his control was out of whack. Remove that bad week, and the 27-year-old from Randolph, Minn., is at 1.95 this season.

More importantly, he is pitching in significantly more critical situations this year, mostly against lefthanded batters, and he’s rewarding the Twins’ trust. Thielbar has held hitters to a .186 average in “high-leverage” or “medium-leverage” situations, when the game is at stake.

Not bad for a guy the Brewers released before he climbed any higher than Class A.

That unusual delivery is the reason why. When he was drafted, the Brewers did an evaluation of his mechanics, “and they said I was going to have some shoulder problems if I kept throwing that way,” Thielbar said. “They changed how I threw, and I lost 6 miles per hour immediately, and ended up getting released.”

He went back to his old delivery when the Twins signed him off the St. Paul Saints roster, and he has stuck with it.

“When he came over, we said, ‘[Do] you always throw like that?’ He told us the story, but if you ask hitters or catchers about him, they’ll tell you he’s very deceptive,” Twins pitching coach Rick Anderson said. “One thing with pitching, you always love deception. You can get by with lesser stuff if you keep the hitter from seeing the ball. And that’s him. I would never change it.”

Coulter powers Timber Rattlers' romp

Brewers' No. 8 prospect homers twice, ties career high with five RBIs

By Robert Emrich / MiLB.com

Clint Coulter ranks second in the Midwest League with 19 homers and 75 RBIs. (Ann Mollica/Wisconsin Timber Rattlers)

Being stuck in a slump is nothing compared to what Clint Coulter went through last year.

The Brewers' eighth-ranked prospect homered twice and tied a career high with five RBIs on Saturday night, powering Class A Wisconsin to an 11-3 road win over Peoria.

Coulter's first blast was a three-run shot in the Timber Rattlers' seven-run third inning. He added a two-run blast an inning later, finishing with three hits and a walk in five plate appearances.

"When things are going good, you don't have a lot to say," Coulter said. "Your swings are good, you're on time and you're getting your pitches to hit. When things are going bad, you can dissect all the things that went wrong."

The 21-year-old catcher, who also drove in five runs on Aug. 3, 2013 in the Rookie-level Arizona League, said his teammates deserve credit for his success.

"I think RBIs are a team stat -- there's gotta be teammates on base for you to get those RBIs," Coulter said. "It's a testament to my teammates getting on base and having good at-bats to be able to get those guys in."

The 27th overall pick in the 2012 Draft had endured some struggles of late, going 5-for-30 with three RBIs over his previous nine games. But he felt it was a matter of time before he broke out.

"I've had a lot of hard outs," Coulter said. "Our team has been pretty hot, so pitchers have been executing pitches. You can't really change anything at this point in the season. You gotta go out there and stick with what's been working."

Overall, Coulter is batting .268 and is tied for second in the Midwest League with 19 long balls. He leads the circuit with a .917 OPS, a far cry from his injury-plagued full-season debut last year, when he posted a .714 OPS in 70 games across three levels.

"Really good," Coulter said of his season. "I think my biggest accomplishment is staying healthy. You can't get better if you're not on the field. I think that was why I struggled last year so much. I'd start to get on the field and get injured, and it was tough to get into a groove.

"It was frustrating, but it's part of the game too. It's good to get that out of the way early in my career, hopefully. It's always a good feeling when you can show your organization that invested a high pick on you that you're making progress and developing."

Steven Halcomb went 4-for-5 with two runs scored and Jose Pena plated a pair of runs for the Timber Rattlers, who totaled 14 hits en route to their fourth win in five games.

Tristan Archer improved to 6-5 after allowing three runs -- two earned -- on five hits over six innings. He walked three and struck out five before Zach Quintana worked three one-hit frames for his second save of the season.

Former Milwaukee draft pick Rowan Wick accounted for the Chiefs' offense with a three-run homer, his third for Peoria and 17th of the season.

If he lost 6 MPH then whatever they changed his delivery to was more incorrect than what he started with, that doesn't make any sense. The 6 MPH may be a bit of an over exaggeration but still... If a pitcher's velocity drops and never recovers when you mess with his mechanics than obviously something is very wrong. There can be any number of reasons for a temporary drop in velocity but come on, no one thought to revisit the issue with him?
