Oddity from Steve:

RARE APPEARANCE IN BIRMINGHAM: After having played in Birmingham twice last year, the Stars are making their only appearance to Regions Field for this five-game series even though Birmingham and Huntsville are in the same division and are only an hour and forty five minutes away from each other. Last season, the Stars were 3-7 in the inaugural season of baseball at Regions Field.

Clark Belts Walkoff Blast For Sounds In Twinbill Opener

Nashville Sounds

(Mike Strasinger / Nashville Sounds)

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - First baseman Matt Clark belted a walkoff two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the Nashville Sounds a dramatic 4-2 victory over the Round Rock Express in the first game of a doubleheader on Friday evening at Greer Stadium.

It was the 10th last at-bat victory of the season for Nashville (63-56), which extended its lead to one game over Memphis in the PCL American Conference Southern Division.

Clark's game-ending homer, his fifth of the year, came against Round Rock starter Robbie Ross, Jr. (4-4), who drew the loss.

The Sounds, who entered the bottom of the seventh trailing 2-1, tied the score against Ross when Jason Rogers led off with a single and Sean Halton followed with a single, which plated pinch-runner Kevin Mattison with the tying run when right fielder Bryan Peterson misfired to the infield.

Clark followed by blasting Ross' 3-0 offering to right to end the contest.

Sounds starter Michael Blazek, who took a no-decision for Nashville after allowing one run in 6 1/3 innings, continued his recent dominance of PCL hitters before late Express heroics ruined his chance at a victory.

Prior to giving up a run in the top of the seventh, he extended his scoreless streak to 17 2/3 consecutive frames over his last three starts. In 13 starts for the Sounds, the right-hander carries a 2.73 ERA (17er/56.0ip).

The Sounds took a 1-0 lead in the fifth inning when Clark (3-for-3) led off with a single against Ross and later scored on Irving Falu's two-out RBI single.

With the Sounds two outs away from notching a shutout, Round Rock first baseman Tomas Telis belted a two-run homer in the top of the seventh to give the visitors a 2-1 lead.

Telis' blast, an opposite-field shot to left which came on a 2-0 offering from Sounds reliever Alfredo Figaro, was the infielder's first of the year and also plated Ryan Rua, who had singled earlier in the frame against Blazek.

Nashville extended a couple of significant streaks during the opener. Jeremy Hermida singled in the first inning to up his home on-base streak to 32 consecutive games, the longest such streak by a PCL player this season. Logan Schafer (2-for-3) doubled in the third inning to run his longest hitting streak of the year to seven games.

Chiefs score three in eighth to beat Rattlers 5-2

Wisconsin fought back to tie the game at Peoria

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

PEORIA, IL - Ronald Castillo's two-run double in the bottom of the eighth inning snapped a 2-2 tie and led the Peoria Chiefs to a 5-2 victory over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers Friday night at Dozer Park.

The Chiefs (61-55 overall, 24-23 second half) scored with a two out rally in the bottom of the fourth. Wisconsin starter Javier Salas had two outs and none on when he allowed a hit to Castillo and walked Rowan Wick. Steve Bean lined a single to right to drive in Castillo and Peoria was up 1-0.

Peoria added a run in the bottom of the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly by Juan Herrera to go up 2-0.

The Timber Rattlers (63-53, 27-20) got on the scoreboard in the top of the sixth inning against Peoria starter Rob Kaminsky. Angel Ortega singled to start the inning. Johnny Davis singled on a hit-and-run to send Ortega to third base. Davis wound up at second base after a slight bobble in the outfield. Chris McFarland drove in Ortega with a ground out to get the Rattlers to within a run.

Wisconsin tied the game in the top of the seventh inning. Omar Garcia doubled with one out to knock Kaminsky out of the game. Zach Lorraine took over on the mound for the Chiefs and Garcia stole third with Steve Halcomb at the plate. Halcomb lined a 1-2 pitch over the drawn-in infield to drive in Ortega and the game was tied 2-2.

Wisconsin reliever Victor Diaz entered in the bottom of the sixth and retired the first six batters he faced. But, ran into trouble in the bottom of the eighth. CJ McElroy, Jr. singled to start the inning and was sacrificed to second base. Justin Ringo didn't chase any of the first three pitches of his at bat and was intentionally walked on ball four. Both McElroy and Ringo were running on the first pitch to Castillo and they easily scored on Castillo's double to left-center for a 4-2 lead.

Diaz struck out Rowan Wick, but a dropped third strike allowed Wick to reach and Castillo to take third base. Bean made the Rattlers pay for that miscue with a sacrifice fly to center that scored Castillo from third for a 5-2 lead.

Kyle Barraclough pitched around a one out walk in the top of the ninth inning to close out the game for his third save.

The Timber Rattlers and Chiefs continue their series at Dozer Park on Saturday night. Tristan Archer (5-5, 3.72) is the scheduled starting pitcher for Wisconsin. Arturo Reyes (6-7, 3.48) is set to start for Peoria. Game time is 6:30pm. Tune in for the radio broadcast on AM1280, WNAM or IHeartRadio starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 6:10pm.

WP: Zach Lorraine (2-1)

LP: Victor Diaz (3-5)

SAVE: Kyle Barraclough (3)

TIME: 2:22

ATTN: 5,883

Wisconsin Boxscore

I suppose we should all get used to Rob Kaminsky now as he'll likely rise at the same rate as our crop of prospects and hit AAA Memphis when our WI group hits AAA.

Victor Diaz was on fire... but it all fell apart in a hurry. Javier Salas wasn't dominant but got the job done allowing 7 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, and 2 SO over 5 IP.

Angel Ortega (2-3) had the only multi-hit game.

Final: Ogden 8, Helena 0

Raptors shut out Brewers 8-0

By Dustin Daniel / Helena Brewers

The Helena Brewers (5-8) were shut out for the fourth time this season on Friday, falling to the Ogden Raptors (7-5) 8-0 at Lindquist Field.

Jose De Leon (5-0) was lights out in the start for Ogden. The Pioneer League's ERA leader went seven innings of shutout baseball, giving up just three hits and striking out 11.

The Raptors would score in clumps coming up with three runs in the fourth. Andrew Godbold ripped an RBI double to right to score Yensys Capellan from first and later came in on an RBI double from Jimmy Allen.

It was more hard-hitting from Ogden in the seventh when Cody Bellinger had an RBI triple and Allen came up with his second RBI double of the night.

Helena's Alan Sharkey came up with a single in the second to extend his hitting streak to a season-high five games and Connor Narron had a two-out double in the ninth for the only extra-base hit of the night for the Brewers. He was one of just two Brewers to reach second in the game. None would reach third.

The Brewers and Raptors will face off in game two of their three-game series Saturday from Lindquist Field. First pitch is set for 7:00 p.m.

Helena Box Score

Brewers 3rd round pick Cy Sneed had 5 strikeouts out of the 8 outs he recorded. Unfortunately he also gave up 4 hits, 2 walks and 4 earned runs.

Sounds Edge Express in Nightcap, 2-1

Nashville's Schafer Provides Game-Winning Single

Nashville Sounds

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Logan Schafer's bases-loaded single in 5th inning powered the Nashville Sounds (64-56) to a 2-1 victory over the Round Rock Express in the nightcap of Friday's doubleheader at Greer Stadium.

Schafer's one-out hit scored Matt Clark, who drew a walk to lead off the inning, and Irving Falu, who singled through the infield. Schafer extends his season-best hit streak to eight games.

Keeping the Express off the rails was newcomer Jay Jackson, who made his first start as a Sound a good one by scattering three hits over four scoreless frames. The right-hander fanned seven batters and walked only one in his 54-pitch debut.

Sounds reliever Jose De La Torre (3-2) served up a scoreless fifth inning and left the game with two outs in the sixth after walking Ryan Rua. Brent Leach entered to close the inning, but allowed a single and committed a throwing error on a pickoff attempt to grant Round Rock their only run.

Dustin Molleken delivered a spotless seventh inning to pick up his fourth save of the year. De La Torre was awarded the win.

Nashville also picked up hits from Sean Halton, Eugenio Velez, and catcher Adam Weisenburger, who ripped a double to left-center field in his first Triple-A at-bat in the 3rd inning.

The teams continue the series with a 6:35 p.m. matchup. Right-hander Taylor Jungmann (5-5, 4.90) will make the start for the Sounds and face Round Rock right-hander Luke Jackson (1-0, 6.58).

Final: DSL Tigers 13, DSL Brewers 4

DSL Brewers Box Score

Nelson Hernandez gave up six runs in three innings of work and was charged with the loss as the Brewers were thumped by the Tigers 13-4. The bullpen fared no better as Juan Diaz, Jesus Brea and Boanerges Nova combined to allow seven runs over the final six innings. Nicolas Pierre hit his team leading sixth home run of the season and drove in three of the Brewers four runs. Joantgel Segovia singled and walked in three plate appearances before being replaced by Raphachel Colatosti who went 2-for-2 with an RBI.

DSL Brewers Play-By-Play

As Mass Haas mentioned the other day, Pierre's home run ties him with Orlando Arcia (who also hit six home runs in 2011) and Jhonatan Javier (who hit six for the Brewers/Orioles co-op team in 2009) for the most home runs by a Brewers player since they re-started play in the Dominican Summer League in 2009.

DSL Brewers Bottom of the 9th

Raphachel Colatosti singles on a ground ball to center fielder Sauris Mejia.

Franly Mallen pops out to third baseman Alwin Delgado.

Nicolas Pierre homers (6) on a fly ball to left field. Raphachel Colatosti scores.

Kevin Martinez walks.

Dilson Fernandez strikes out swinging.

Roosevert Chal flies out to right fielder Ignacio Valdez.

Ogden shuts out Brewers in series opener

By Helena Independent Record

Ogden pitchers Jose De Leon and Lenix Osuna combined on a five-hitter, as the Raptors shut out the Helena Brewers 8-0 Friday at Lindquist Field in Ogden, Utah.

It was Helena’s third straight defeat.

De Leon earned the victory on the mound, improving his season mark to 5-0. De Leon went seven innings and allowed just three hits, striking out an incredible 11 batters while walking none. Osuna relieved him to start the eighth and allowed just two hits while continuing to keep the visiting Brewers off the board.

Helena starter Luis Ortega (3-6) took the loss after allowing three earned runs on five hits through four innings. Cy Sneed gave up four runs in 2 2/3 innings of relief, while the Raptors also scored a run against Junior Rincon.

Ogden second baseman Jimmy Allen led the Raptors’ 11-hit attack, going 2 for 4 with two doubles, a pair of RBIs and two runs scored. First baseman Cody Bellinger was 2 for 5 with a triple, an RBI and a run scored.

Francisco Castillo, Brandon Diaz, Connor Narron, Alan Sharkey and Edgardo Rivera each had a hit for Helena, which struggled to put runners in scoring position. Narron was the only player with an extra-base hit, with a double against Osuna.

Every player in the Helena lineup struck out at least once.

The game was scoreless until the bottom of the fourth, when Ogden plated three runs. It stayed 3-0 until the seventh, when the Raptors exploded for five runs in the frame.

The two teams meet again tonight at 7:05 p.m. The Brewers close out the series with Ogden on Sunday, have an off day Monday, then return home to Kindrick Legion Field on Tuesday to host Idaho Falls.

Steve Jarnicki, Huntsville Stars

Birmingham, AL - The Huntsville Stars won their fourth straight game Friday night with a 5-2 win over the Birmingham Barons at Regions Field in Birmingham.

The Stars and Barons were delayed 91 minutes due to rain.

The Barons jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning against LHP Jed Bradley (5-6). Trayce Thompson homered down the right field line off the foul pole.

That was the only run Bradley allowed in his six innings of work on his way to a victory.

The Stars took the lead for good in the top of the third inning.

Nick Shaw tied the game at 1-1 on his groundout to first base which scored Erik Komatsu. Josh Fellhauer then singled back up the middle against Bryan Blough (2-4) giving the Stars a 2-1 lead.

Shaw gave the Stars a 3-1 lead in the seventh on his RBI single into right.

In the top of the eighth, the Stars got a pair of RBI doubles from Hector Gimenez and Josh Prince to increase the lead to 5-1.

The Barons got an RBI single from Jeremy Farrell in the ninth against Kevin Shackelford making it 5-2.

Fellhauer paced the Stars offense with a 3-5 game with an RBI.

Huntsville Box Score

Another double-digit hit night for the Stars! Check out the second half standings in a middling North Division, as Huntsville's only one game out from sneaking a second half win to follow up their first half convincing session.

OF Josh Fellhauer loves his Stars uniform, hitting .371 since the trade from Cincinnati.

LHP Jed Bradley has sandwiched excellent outings around a nightmare one his last time out.

Nice debut by Jay Jackson, might be a darkhorse to be added to the 40 man roster. Also have to give credit to Michael Blazek as he has really turned around his season. Would have never thought of him as a starter but it is working for him in AAA.

I wonder if they might not improve a bit if some of the AZL guys made the team. I wouldn't normally think that would make a difference, but all 3 of our top draft picks started with the Arizona team. Sure they've been kind of uneven so far, but there is still instructionals and spring training.

It's not even the offense I'm worried about - they might be pretty decent if Denson, Pena and one of Davis/Garcia repeats, plus whatever contributions Harrison or Gatewood could make. Diaz, Aviles and Munoz should be pretty solid up the middle; some combination of Narron, Clearly, and McCall behind the dish should be alright and Matos looks like he might be something at third.

The pitching on the other hand... Wang (assuming he lands here, which is not a given) and Williams will be interesting to follow, Sneed probably won't be terrible, but everything after that is pretty fugly to project.
