Gallardo aiming to keep firing zeros against Giants

Vogelsong looking to prevent Crew from securing series victory

By Jackson Alexander / MLB.com | 8/6/2014 1:00 AM ET

Yovani Gallardo looks to extend his 16 2/3 scoreless-innings streak against the Giants on Wednesday night in the middle game at Miller Park.

Gallardo enters his start fresh off a pair of scoreless outings. The first came on July 25, when he held the Mets scoreless in 7 2/3 innings, allowing four hits, zero walks with eight strikeouts in the Crew's 3-2 loss. Last Wednesday, he blanked the Rays over seven frames, again surrendering just four hits. He walked one batter and struck out five.

The right-hander also owns a strong history of success against San Francisco. Of Gallardo's nine career starts vs. the Giants, eight have been quality starts.

Gallardo aims to push the Brewers to 10-8 after the All-Star break.

After drawing Adam Wainwright and John Lackey in their previous series, the Brewers see former National League Cy Young Award winners Tim Lincecum (in Tuesday's 4-3 win) and Jake Peavy (Thursday's starter) against the Giants. Then, Milwaukee will face a Dodgers' pitching staff, which held the best ERA in the Majors before Tuesday's action.

"We know we've got good pitchers in this series, certainly," manager Ron Roenicke said. "I'm sure the Dodgers are throwing some pretty good arms against us too. I thought we've had better at-bats lately. Maybe the run total doesn't always show that, but I think at-bats have been better, and I'm hoping that carries over into this series."

The Brewers' 4-3 win over the Giants on Tuesday night marked the beginning of a six-game home stretch. Their previous six games were on the road.

"We knew the road trip was going to be tough with arms, and we come right back and face tough arms again," Roenicke said. "And that's difficult when you're looking at trying to maintain what you're doing and you look at the pitchers you're facing, in our [NL Central] division especially. I know we've got these good arms coming here, but our division's tough, and those arms don't get easier."

San Francisco calls on right-hander Ryan Vogelsong for Wednesday's start.

Vogelsong twirled his first career complete game on Friday against the Mets, allowing one run on two hits and striking out five in the Giants' 5-1 victory.

"It's been weighing on me for a while," Vogelsong said after the start.

Brewers: Injuries hampering position players

Second baseman Scooter Gennett (left quad) and left fielder Khris Davis (left elbow) were not in the lineup on Tuesday.

Gennett's injury has kept him in and out of the lineup for the last few weeks, while Davis' issue just flared up on Tuesday morning.

Rickie Weeks replaced Gennett in the lineup and finished with a double and a walk, while new addition Gerardo Parra slugged his first home run with the Brewers.

Giants: Sandoval stays hot

Pablo Sandoval had his second straight big game at the plate for the Giants in their loss on Tuesday.

Sandoval smacked a three-run homer off Brewers starter Jimmy Nelson, after going 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles in San Francisco's 4-3 triumph over the Mets on Monday.

The Giants' third baseman holds a six-game hitting streak.

Worth noting

Brewers catcher Jonathan Lucroy slid into second place among MLB hitters for doubles with a pair on Tuesday, giving him 37 for the season. He trails only Arizona's Paul Goldschmidt, who has 39, but his season is likely over due to a fractured left hand.

• Giants outfielder Hunter Pence has the most experience against Gallardo, logging 31 at-bats in his career against Milwaukee's starter. He's hitting .226 against him.

It's starting to look like this is going to be more and more of a platoon.

Parra's OPS is about 30 points lower, but his BA was significantly higher.

Still, vs a guy like Vogelsong, a fly ball pitcher at Miller Park, I think I might have gone with him tonight.

Of course Parra made it tough for RR to give Davis the nod after last nights game.

Edit-I didn't read through and see that Davis has a sore elbow. [sarcasm]Must be the strain from all those darts he's throwing from the OF to.....well...pretty close to the cutoff guy usually.[/sarcasm]

I wish Herrera was starting at SS. Can always bring in Segura for defense later in games.
"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

Hopefully we brought our bats today. Gonna need a lot of runs.

Being down 3-0 before you've even come up to bat is rough. We will come back. I'm feeling positive.

Let's go Brewers! Break out the big bats!
