NEW - BF.net Fan Community Top 25 Prospects Project V. 2.0 - August 2014

Brewer Fanatic Contributor

The trade deadline has passed and it's time to update the our community prospect list. Please post your top 25 prospects, in order. IMPORTANT: Do not post less than 25, or your list won't be included in the final tally. Submissions are due by Tuesday, August 19. Once the totals are in, I'll post results within a few days. Just post your list in this thread, or message me.

Here are some updates, news and resources to consider as you make your list:

1. Mitch Hanigar (#6 on our last list) and Anthony Banda (unranked) have been traded. So don't vote for them.

2. Jimmy Nelson is technically a rookie at this time, but let's NOT include him in our prospect list. He'll likely exceed rookie status in the next few weeks - maybe before this list is actually published.

3. I'm making Wei-Chung Wang eligible for our prospect list. I know he technically isn't a prospect in the eyes of MLB, but for our purposes, he's a prospect. So let's treat him as one in our listing.

4. Player Notes:

- Hunter Morris (#11) is out for the rest of the season with a broken arm

- Nick Delmonico (#13) was suspended for 50 games

- Tyler Cravy (#15) has been on the DL since late June

- Hiram Burgos (#33) is out for the season after shoulder sugery

- Johnny Hellweg (#27) is out for the season after TJ surgery

5. Newcomers to consider on this list:

- Franly Mallen and Nicolas Pierre, last year's big International signings, both are playing in the Dominican Summer League

- Top picks in 2014 draft, including Kodi Medeiros, Jake Gatewood and Monte Harrison

- International bonus baby Gilbert Lara (signed for $3+ million). Lara won't play until 2015.

Next 5 in no particular order would be Matos, Magnifico, Neuhaus, Demuth, and the DSL guys. Given the extreme youth this far down the list there is a lot of sleeper potential and just a lot of room for these guys to move up. I'd definitely say the top 14 are pretty interesting to follow with good ceilings and most of them have started to produce at some meaningful level. I tend to value guys who have made the jumps to higher levels, but that is hard with the current system especially when a lot of the guys in AA or AAA who are producing seem to have leveled off at their ceilings.

The following is my version. I'm much more excited about this system than I was before the season. Even if Nelson would have been eligible, Arcia still would have been my #1, think the kid will be a star and overall I'm very excited about our top 3.

OP, a quick way to see organizational stats in the minors on one page is on baseball reference, incase you want to update and add these links instead of individual team.

1. Clint Coulter (Power over tools)

2. Tyrone Taylor

3. Orlando Arcia

4. Taylor Williams

5. Tyler Wagner

6. Jason Rogers (This high mostly because he will be in MLB at least)

7. David Denson (Young and not over-matched at low A)

8. Jorge Lopez

9. Devin Williams

10. Victor Roache (Starting to hit a little for avg...finally)

11. Brandon Diaz

12. Tyler Cravy

13. Shawn Zarraga

14. Nick Ramirez (Kris Davis track? Not a huge prospect, but may surprise?)

15. Taylor Jungmann

16. Wei-Chung Wang

17. Monte Harrison

18. Jake Gatewood

19. Kodi Medeiros

20. Gilbert Lara

21. Michael Ratteree (Power, and a pretty good RF)

22. Shervin Matos

23. Ariel Pena (Still shows signs of being a #5 SP)

24. Johnny Davis (Speed and defense, can hit some)

25. Taylor Brennan (Plays a great 3B, takes walks, lots of potential here)

Just don't feel good about ranking the 2014 guys higher yet. Not big on Reed or McFarland. Hard to keep saying with a straight face Jed Bradley is a top 20 prospect. Really tough right now, there are even more guys who could/should be in the Top 20- just not enough to go on yet.

Edit: I didn't look at other posters' lists until I finished mine. The one change I made after seeing what others did and reviewing the numbers was replacing Wang with Cravy in the top 25. Cravy's season this year has benefited from a ridiculous BABIP of .223; I don't believe he's quite the guy we're seeing. But he has a couple of years of good pitching under his belt, and he's reached AAA.

Obviously I went more for potential over polish, though most of the younger guys I've listed have produced at least modestly well. My list doesn't have any full-time relievers; unless a guy is just an overpowering specialist, I don't see much hope for minor league relievers (I'm thinking of Goforth).

The system has some exciting prospects. Doing this exercise confirms my sense that we're on the right track.

1. Kodi Medeiros, LHP (18) - Poor debut so far, but his stuff is so nasty the control issues don't have to disappear entirely for him to be totally unhittable (e.g. young Randy Johnson). 11.6 K/9. The upside is tantalizing. Nobody in the system has a higher upside, in my opinion.

2. Orlando Arcia, SS (19) - Not sure how you can rank him behind Taylor; better defender, younger, offense not really that far behind.

3. Monte Harrison, CF (18) - Personally, I love physical tools until a guy shows he's never going to be able to tap into them (e.g. D'Vontrey Richardson). Harrison's pro debut not super exciting, but solid. Giving him the slight edge over Taylor.

4. Tyrone Taylor, CF (20) - Some more athleticism and upside. I guess I don't like him quite as much as others (though I still like him), because I don't see the evidence of an All Star ceiling quite yet.

5. Gilbert Lara, SS/3B (16?) - We really don't know anything about him, but the Brewers quadrupling their previous international signing record means something.

6. Jacob Gatewood, SS (18) - Early rookie league numbers mean almost nothing, but it would be nice to see him not struggle so much in his first taste of pro baseball. Ranking him this low because of that and because of questions about his position long-term. Still love the upside though. Thrilled that somebody like Gatewood is ranked this low in the current Brewers system.

7. Clint Coulter, C/DH (20) - Can't ignore a first-round pick putting up big numbers, but the fact remains that Coulter has played nearly half his games at DH (does not bode well for his chances of sticking at C). He's hopefully learning that when he shows patience (63 BB to 84 K this year) success follows. Happy he didn't end up getting traded.

8. Brandon Diaz, CF (19) - I'm not ranking him #1, but I trust that where there's smoke (PECOTA/agent39), there's fire. A touch less power so far, but he's basically replicating his 2013 numbers at the next higher level in 2014.

9. Taylor Williams, RHP (22) - He's not young for A-ball, but his results are impressive. I read that he got something of a late start in playing regular baseball in college, so if this is him finally taking off, watch out.

10. Taylor Jungmann, RHP (24) - He's not Eric Arnett. I still believe that Jungmann can be a useful MLB pitcher. No longer dreaming of an ace, but I could see him eating some innings as a #4/5 in the not-so-distant future.

11. Devin Williams, RHP (19)

12. Wei-Chung Wang, LHP (22) - He wasn't really a top prospect with the Pirates, but what does it mean that the Brewers went to such an unprecedented length to get him in the system? Will be fascinating to follow his career.

13. Tyler Wagner, RHP (23)

14. Jed Bradley, LHP (24)

15. Nicolas Pierre, CF (17)

16. Jorge Lopez, LHP (21)

17. Victor Roache, LF (22)

18. Michael Reed, RF (21)

19. Johnny Hellweg, RHP (25)

20. David Denson, 1B (19) - On-base percentage has taken a step back this season, but he's young for A-ball. Still intrigued about him combining his apparent power potential with his OBP skills.

21. Elvis Rubio, OF (20)

22. Yadiel Rivera, SS (22)

23. Dustin DeMuth, 3B (23)

24. Ariel Pena, RHP (25)

25. Joantgel Segovia, OF (17)

Please remember it's a top 25, not top 20, we've had 2 posters drop in top 20 lists now.
