Via Steve in Huntsville:

The Stars are riding their second five game losing streak during their ten game homestand. They had lost five straight before a win last Sunday against Chattanooga 8-4. The Stars have dropped 10 of their last 13 games going into today…

The home run allowed by Jed Bradley in the 1st inning to Austin Barnes was the first home run the Stars pitching staff had allowed in their last 74.2 IP…

Dating back to last season, the Stars have now lost eight straight home games to the Jacksonville Suns. Last season after the Stars won the first game at “The Joe” on April 10th, the Suns then won the final four which included a doubleheader sweep…

The Stars committed an error for the fifth straight game. They now have at least one error in eight of their last nine games and have a total of fourteen errors in those nine games…

Since sweeping a doubleheader against Tennessee on July 19th, the Stars have gone just 4-11 since….Jacksonville starters have thrown shutout baseball in three out of their four starts in the series.…

The Stars are now six games under the .500 mark in the second half of the season, which is the most games they’ve been under the .500 mark since the all-star break….

The Stars scored just one run. In the last six games, the Stars have scored a grand total of nine runs...The Stars have only scored 53 runs in their last 18 games. In their last 18 games they are 6-12 and averaging a meager 2.9 runs per game.

Final: @Huntsville 2, Jacksonville 1

Stars End Five Game Skid

Steve Jarnicki, Huntsville Stars

Huntsville, AL - The Huntsville Stars grinded through a 2-1 win over the Jacksonville Suns Monday afternoon at Joe Davis Stadium to end their five game losing streak.

With the game tied at 1-1 in the bottom of the seventh, the Stars had the bases loaded with two outs. With Hainley Statia batting, Jacksonville reliever Jay Rogers (6-3) delivered a wild pitch which allowed Erik Komatsu to scamper home from third base giving the Stars a 2-1 lead.

David Goforth came in out of the Stars bullpen and pitched scoreless eighth and ninth innings to secure a two inning save. It was Goforth's 23rd save of the year, the most in the Southern League.

Jacksonville took a 1-0 lead against Huntsville starter Brent Suter in the top of the third inning.

With runners at first and second base and nobody out, Brady Shoemaker hit a sharp grounder off second baseman Shea Vucinich's glove that allowed Austin Nola to score.

The Stars tied the game in the bottom of the third against Jacksonville starter Dustin Moseley.

Josh Fellhauer tripled allowing Yadiel Rivera to score to knot the game at 1-1.

Neither starter factored into the decision. Moseley, went six innings allowing three hits on one run.

Suter pitched five innings and gave up six hits on one run for the Stars.

Greg Holle (2-2) earned the win out of the Stars bullpen. Holle, pitched scoreless sixth and seventh innings to lock up the win.

The Stars were able to avoid the five game sweep from the Suns and ended their ten game homestand with a 4-6 record.

The Stars (20-25, 66-49) will have Tuesday off and then begin a ten game road trip starting Wednesday night in Birmingham against the Barons at Regions Field. The game can be heard starting at 6:50 CDT on 92.9 FM, 1450 AM and wtkiradio.com.

Huntsville Box Score

LHP Brent Suter needed 107 pitches to get through five innings, making the work of RHP's Greg Holle and David Goforth even more critical here.

Newcomer OF Josh Fellhauer has had a nice 15 games with the Stars (.766 OPS), and he's bought into the Brewer-aggresive approach (20 walks in 134 AB's before the trade, one walk in 54 Huntsville AB's). And I'm being facetious, the Stars actually lead the league in walks by a large margin.

Huntsville Game Log

Listened to much of this game, the Huntsville offense is so struggling, it was a frustrating first:

Final: Brevard County 6, Bradenton 9

Long ball bests 'Tees again in 9-6 loss to Marauders

Nathan Orf's three hits and runs not enough in defeat

By Justin Rocke / Brevard County Manatees

Left fielder Nathan Orf, seen here from a game earlier this year, had three hits and scored three runs for the Manatees in their 9-6 loss to the Bradenton Marauders on Monday night at McKechnie Field. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography)

BRADENTON, Fla. - For the second straight night, the Brevard County Manatees were burned by a late-inning home run. Jordan Steranka's three-run shot in the seventh pushed the Bradenton Marauders to a 9-6 victory at McKechnie Field on Monday night.

To start the frame, Walker Gourley attempted to reach on a bunt. Reliever Scott Lieser's throw to first was wild, which allowed Gourley to advance to second.

Jose Osuna attempted to sacrifice the runner to third and laid down a bunt to the third base side. Lieser tried to get the lead runner at third, but Gourley slid in safely. Osuna was in at first on the fielder's choice to put runners at the corners.

That brought up the clean-up hitter, Steranka. On a 1-2 pitch, the left-handed slugger cranked a ball onto the boardwalk in right-center for a three-run home run. It was Steranka's seventh homer of the year and it gave Bradenton (27-16 second half, 62-50 overall) the lead for good, 9-6.

The Manatees (20-20, 56-50) initially held a 6-4 lead going to the bottom of the sixth when right-hander Tyler Spurlin came out of the bullpen to make his Florida State League-debut.

His outing started shaky, as Max Moroff lined a double into shallow left to start the frame. Eric Wood then hit a slow roller towards second. Alfredo Rodriguez charged in, but bobbled the ball and had no play to put the tying runners on base.

First baseman Mike Garza then made a heads up play on a ground ball hit by Justin Howard. The Georgetown product caught Moroff leaning off third base and threw on to third baseman Brandon Macias. Moroff broke for home, but Macias' throw to catcher Cameron Garfield was in time for out number one.

However, both runners were alert. With the focus on the play at the plate, both Wood and Howard advanced to second and third on the throw.

One batter later, Macias would rob a hit with spectacular play. Jacob Stallings smoked one down the third base line, but the former Kansas Jayhawk made a tremendous, diving backhand stop. Wood scored easily from third on the throw to first, but there was now two down.

The lead did not last much longer, as Justin Maffei came through with the game-tying blow. On a full count, the number nine hitter slapped a ball into right field. Michael Reed came up with a strong throw, but it was up the third base line. Howard scored safely to knot the game up at six.

Spurlin's FSL debut lasted only one inning. Making his first appearance since July 18 with Class-A Wisconsin, the righty allowed two unearned runs on two hits.

Behind 4-2, Brevard County grabbed the lead when they sent nine to the plate in the top of the fifth. Against Marauders' starter Chad Kuhl (11-5, 3.52), Nathan Orf started the rally with a double to left.

With one out, Tyrone Taylor hit a roller to third. Wood backed up to try and make the play, but the ball ate him up. Orf stayed at second and Taylor was safe at first to represent the tying runs.

After Reed got plunked, Garfield pushed a run across. The 'Tees backstop lifted a sacrifice fly to right field to bring home Orf and cut the lead to one.

On the relay, Marauders first baseman Jose Osuna cut the ball off and tried to catch Taylor, who was trying to tag up to third. His throw was wild and got past Wood. Taylor was safe and Reed advanced to second on the error.

The inning would only get more bizarre from there. Following a walk to Victor Roache to load the bases, Garza hit a ground ball to third.

Wood fielded and threw a high to first. As Osuna jumped in the air to try and corral the ball, Garza slid head first into first base. The Venezuelan native tried to slap the tag on the diving runner, but had no luck. Garza was in there and Taylor scored to tie the game.

That was the end for Kuhl, as Bradenton manager Tom Prince called on right-hander Ryan Hafner out of the bullpen. The reliever struggled with his control, as he allowed two inherited runners to score on a walk and a wild pitch.

Kuhl, who entered the game tied with the Tyler Wagner for the league-lead in wins with 11, did not factor into the final decision. The former Delaware Blue Hen walked five Manatees and allowed six runs - only two earned - in his 4.2 innings of work.

After allowing four runs in the first two innings, Brevard starter Damien Magnifico (7-6, 3.90) finished the game with a flourish. The right-hander did not allow a hit over his final three frames, just issuing two baserunners on walks.

Magnifico left in line for the win, but ended up not factoring into the decision, either. The Texas native yielded four runs - three earned - on five hits over five innings.

Brevard finished the night with nine hits. Three players - Orf, Taylor and Rodriguez - recorded multi-hit performances. The active league-leader in batting average, Orf, led the charge with three hits. The Baylor grad also doubled twice and scored three runs.

The Manatees will hit the next stop on their eight-game road trip tomorrow, as they travel to Tampa to take on the Yankees (21-22, 54-59). First pitch at George M. Steinbrenner Field is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Jorge Lopez (8-7, 4.09) will get the start for Brevard against Tampa's right-hander Brett Gerritse (3-6, 4.26).

Brevard County Box Score

Damien Magnifico started and went five innings. Tyler Spurlin worked one inning and allowed two unearned runs. Scott Lieser gave up three runs in an inning and Trevor Seidenberger worked a scoreless eighth. Nathan Orf went 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles and scored three runs. Victor Roache went 2-for-3 with a double and Alfredo Rodriguez had two hits and two walks in four plate appearances.

Rattlers win a close one in Cedar Rapids to open road trip

Ratterree's 9th inning sacrifice fly gives Wisconsin a 4-3 win

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers kicked off their seven-game road trip with a 4-3 victory over the Cedar Rapids Kernels on Monday night at Perfect Game Field. Michael Ratterree drove in a pair of runs, including the eventual game-winner in the top of the ninth inning.

Chris McFarland singled in the top of the fourth inning to start the inning for Wisconsin. Ratterree drew a walk and - one out later - Omar Garcia drew a walk to load the bases. Cedar Rapids starting pitcher Lewis Thorpe threw a wild pitch with David Denson at the plate to allow McFarland to score. An error on a grounder off the bat of Rafael Neda allowed Ratterree to score for a 2-0 lead.

The Kernels (59-60 overall, 25-18 second half) also scored two runs in their half of the fourth inning. Wisconsin starter Zach Quintana got the first out, but walked Chad Christensen and hit Mitch Garver to put two runners on base. Alex Swim singled up the middle to drive in Christensen. Quintana hit Max Murphy to load the bases, but struck out the next batter for the second out. Quintana had two strikes out Engelb Vielma, but threw a wild pitch to allow Garver to score the tying run.

McFarland started another Rattlers rally in the fifth inning. He singled with two outs and went to second on an errant pickoff throw. Ratterree delivered McFarland home with a single to center to give Wisconsin (60-51, 24-18) a 3-2 lead.

Cedar Rapids tied the game in the bottom of the sixth inning. Christensen lined a home run to left against reliever Luke Curtis to lead off the sixth and the game was tied 3-3.

The Rattlers went back in front in the top of the ninth inning. Johnny Davis singled and Angel Ortega doubled to put runners on second and third with no outs against Kernels reliever Dallas Gallant. After getting a strikeout, Gallant walked McFarland intentionally to load the bases. Ratterree lifted a flyball to right that was deep enough for Davis to score the go ahead run.

Wisconsin reliever Tristan Archer, who came on in the eighth inning, pitched a scoreless ninth to close out the Kernels. Archer picked up the win, his fifth of the season, with two scoreless innings.

Game two of the series is scheduled for Tuesday night. Barrett Astin (7-5, 4.74) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Ricky Nolasco will start for the Kernels on a Major League rehabilitation assignment for the Minnesota Twins. Game time is 6:35pm. Tune in for the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM or IHeartRadio starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 6:15pm.

HOME RUN:

CR:

Chad Christensen (8th, 0 on in 6th inning off Luke Curtis)

WP: Tristan Archer (5-5)

LP: Dallas Gallant (1-1)

TIME: 3:13

ATTN: 1,902

Wisconsin Boxscore

Both Nolasco and Mauer are starting against the T-Rats tomorrow night on rehab assignments so the Rattlers will have a bit of a steep hill to climb.

Mehring was quite kind to Zach Quintana when discussing his self induced issues in the 4th. He was up 0-2 to Thompson and threw essentially the same pitch 3 straight times, called a ball all 3 times, to walk him. I can understand disagreeing and coming back a 2nd time but doing it a 3rd time is just... well... it's dumb. All you're going to do is piss off the umpire and make sure you don't get that call again. Zach came a bit unhinged after that and had trouble finding the zone the rest of the inning. It's too bad as he was pitching very well until the 4th and every time I think he's taken a step forward he does something like the 4th inning which grates on me. He's better of late and was trending to finish the season on a high note, but other than flashing a plus breaking ball a couple of TV outings ago I haven't seen him to do much to be excited about.

Quintana ended up going 4 innings, allowing just 1 hit, 2 earned runs, 2 walks, 2 hit batters, and 1 costly wild pitch against 3 strike outs.

Chris McFarland (2-3,BB) and Angel Ortega (2-4,2B) had the only multi-hit games for a club that only collected 6 hits against 13 strike outs in the contest. Rattler batters did walk 7 times... so that's a plus, but they haven't been hitting since their 5 run outburst in the 2nd inning on Friday.

Sounds Lulled By Z's; Lose 4-0

Nashville's Ariel Pena Goes Seven Innings In Loss

Nashville Sounds

http://www.milb.com/assets/images/6/4/4/86792644/cuts/MPS_8555_Large_j0nlc6j3_k3bpmbmk.jpg

(MIKE STRASINGER )

METAIRIE, La. - The first-place Nashville Sounds (62-55) were held without a run Monday night at Zephyr Field in their 4-0 loss to the New Orleans Zephyrs. It marks the team's sixth shutout loss of the season.

The Zephyrs took the lead early on, scoring a run in the bottom of the 1st inning courtesy of Justin Bour's low liner into right field that brought in Austin Wates from third base.

Zephyrs right fielder Brian Bogusevic increased New Orleans' lead to two with his RBI double in the 4th inning, which followed Bour's leadoff double.

In the 6th inning, the Z's made it a 4-0 lead over Nashville with a Ed Lucas sacrifice fly and Zack Cox's RBI single.

Sounds starting pitcher Ariel Pena (8-7) allowed all four Zephyrs runs during his seven innings of work from the hill to pick up his seventh loss of the season. The right-hander surrendered seven hits and issued three walks, but also fired seven strikeouts.

Reliever Kyle Heckathorn stepped in to deliver a spotless 8th inning, fanning one Zephyr.

Offensively, three Sounds batters turned in two-hit nights to account for the team's six hits on the night: Logan Schafer, Irving Falu, and Hector Gomez.

New Orleans starter Brad Penny (2-2) worked six scoreless frames, limiting the Sounds to three hits, for his second win on the year.

The Sounds will look to level the series with New Orleans on Tuesday night by sending RHP Donovan Hand (1-6, 4.66) to the hill opposite the Zephyrs' LHP Elih Villanueva (9-7, 3.73). First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.

Nashville Boxscore

Ariel Pena came by his 4 runs honestly but did a nice job to limit New Orleans to a single tally in the 4th.

Nashville Recap

Pena got back to back strike outs with 2 runners on to get out of the 4th.

New Orleans Bottom of the 4th

  • Justin Bour doubles (23) on a sharp line drive to right fielder Jeremy Hermida.

By Helena Independent Record

With runners on the corners in the bottom of the 10th inning Monday at Melaleuca Field in Idaho, Idaho Falls’ Luis Valenzuela pinch-hit a single down the first base line to give the Chukars an 8-7 win over the Helena Brewers.

Helena (4-5) took a 1-o lead in the third when Alan Sharkey singled and came home later on a wild pitch. But Idaho Falls scored six unanswered runs after that to take a big lead through seven.

But the Brewers weren’t done yet. Helena scored four runs in the eighth inning, two of them coming courtesy of Sthervin Matos’ fifth home run of the year, then tacked on two more runs in the ninth to tie the game at 7-all and send the game to extra innings. It was the Brewers’ fourth time going to extra frames this year, and Helena has yet to win a game in extra innings.

Monday marked the Pioneer League debut of David Carver, who got the start for the Brewers. The southpaw was promoted from the Arizona League to fill Javi Salas’ roster spot after the right-hander was called up to the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers.

Carver, a 35th round draft pick this year out of Lamar University, gave up four runs on three hits while walking five through 2 2/3 innings. As a pitching staff, Helena walked a season-high 12 batters in the contest.

Matos was 2 for 5 with a home run, double and two RBIs for Helena. Luis Aviles also went 2 for 5 with an RBI, and Mitch Meyer recorded a triple. Idaho Falls first baseman Samir Duenez was 2 for 4 with four runs batted in to lead the Chukars.

NOTE: Helena reliever Drew Ghelfi was released by the Milwaukee Brewers on Saturday evening (as reported in the Minor League Transactions thread). Ghelfi was playing his second year of pro ball after being drafted out of Minnesota.

No one has been promoted from the AZL yet to take his place in the bullpen.

Not just “at Night” anymore.
