Huntsville notes via Steve:

Dating back to last season, the Stars have now lost seven straight home games to the Jacksonville Suns. Last season after the Stars won the first game at “The Joe” on April 10th, the Suns then won the final four which included a doubleheader sweep…

Stars SS Yadiel Rivera committed an error in the 2nd inning which turned out to be the difference in the game. It was Rivera’s sixth error on the ten game homestand and it was also the fourth straight game that the Stars committed an error in. They now have at least one error in seven of their last eight games and have a total of thirteen errors in those eight games…Since sweeping a doubleheader against Tennessee on July 19th, the Stars have gone just 4-10 since….

Jacksonville improved to a Southern League best 28-12 in 1-run games this year, while their 28 one-run victories are the most in all of professional baseball…The Stars are now five games under the .500 mark in the second half of the season, which is the most games they’ve been under the .500 mark since the all-star break….The Stars scored just two runs for a second straight night. In the last five games, the Stars have scored a grand total of eight runs...The Stars have only scored 52 runs in their last 17 games. In their last 17 games they are 6-11 and averaging a meager 3.1 runs per game…

C Adam Weisenburger’s solo home run was his second home run of the year. Both of his home runs have come within his last fourteen games after not hitting a homer in his first fifty two games…OF Josh Fellhauer went 2-3, but did not get a first inning hit which snapped his five game, first inning hit streak. Overall, Fellhauer enters today on a four game hitting streak and has hit safely in six out of his last seven games. So far he has played 13 games and has racked up 14 hits. Six of those 14 hits have come in the first inning…

2B Nick Shaw went 1-4 which extended his hitting streak to six straight games. He has now hit safely in eleven of his last twelve games. Since the All-Star break, Shaw is batting .336 with 14 RBI in 32 games...Yadiel Rivera went 0-2 and is 0 for his last 14. Despite that, In his last 21 games, Rivera is batting .324 (22-68)... RHP Eric Marzec threw 5.2 innings and allowed three runs (two earned). Huntsville starters in their last 18 starts are 5-8 with a 4.03 ERA (100.33 IP, 45 ER).

Since the Stars clinched the 1st half championship they’ve gone 25-29.

I remember when the Brewers drafted RHP Joel Pierce and then-catcher/OF Rowan Wick from the Canadian National Junior Team.

I met each young man when they barnstormed into my Massachusetts hometown just before the signing deadline (July 2010 write-up).

Pierce signed (and flamed out quickly); Wick didn't, and now the Cardinals are reaping the power benefits in 2014 (16 HR in 161 AB's), as the Rattlers found out yesterday.

Rattlers and Chiefs suspended with game tied 1-1 after nine innings

Rain halts play just before start of tenth

GRAND CHUTE, WI - Sunday's game between the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers and the Peoria Chiefs was suspended with the score tied 1-1 after nine innings. The game will be picked up in the top of the tenth inning on Thursday when the Timber Rattlers begin a series against the Chiefs at Dozer Park in Peoria.

Peoria (59-51 overall, 22-19 second half) got their first hit of the game with a two-out single by Justin Ringo in the fourth inning. Ronald Castillo followed with an infield single and Rattlers starter Javier Salas hit Rowan Wick to load the bases. Salas jammed Cesar Valera, who hit a slow dribbler to short. Valera just beat the throw for an infield single to score Ringo for a 1-0 lead.

That was the only run allowed by Salas, who was making his Midwest League debut in the start. The tenth round pick of the Brewers from the University of Miami in the 2014 draft allowed four hits, walked two, and struck out four.

The Rattlers (59-51, 23-18) put together their own two-out rally in the sixth inning. Taylor Brennan reached on an error and Clint Coulter followed with a single to put runners on the corners. David Denson was next and he singled to left to drive in Brennan with the tying run.

Peoria starting pitcher Arturo Reyes struck out ten Rattlers over seven innings, but ran into trouble in the eighth. Johnny Davis singled to start the inning and Omar Garcia bunted Davis into scoring position and that was all for Reyes.

Kyle Barraclough took over on the mound for the Chiefs and got out of the inning when Davis was thrown out trying to steal third and Brennan struck out.

Neither team could score in the ninth before an intense downpour caused play to be stopped. The decision to suspend the game was made 45 minutes later as the rain continued to fall.

The game will be picked up on Thursday in the top of the tenth inning with Peoria at the plate and the score tied 1-1. The time of the restart on Thursday is to be determined and should be announced on Monday.

Speaking of Monday, the Timber Rattlers begin a road trip on tomorrow night with a game against the Cedar Rapids Kernels at Perfect Game Field. Zach Quintana (3-5, 5.61) is the scheduled starting pitcher for Wisconsin. The Kernels plan to send Lewis Thorpe (2-2, 4.74) to the mound. Game time is 6:35pm. Tune in for the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM or IHeartRadio starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 6:15pm.

Wisconsin Partial Boxscore

The rain storm which stopped the T-Rats first hit the game I was watching NW of Appleton and it was surreal to watch a wall of white envelope the tree line and come at me. The field I was at sustained some damage, the shed which houses the equipment was blown over and part of the wall ended up clear across the field by the 3rd base dugout.

Javier Salas had a nice debut described above. Back in June before the all-star break I made this post asking for Taylor Williams to ascend in the second half, my has he ever. In that same spirit I'm now asking for Chris McFarland, Clint Coulter, and David Denson to all finish the season on a high note and push hard towards BC for 2015.

Oh, and for the record when I mention a player ascending that means I think there's still more in that player's tank. For example I think Coulter's true hitting ability lies between his April and then rest of his other 3 months which were incredibly consistent. He hasn't gone on an extended streak of squaring up pitches in some time, but he's got the talent. I don't believe he's a .250ish hitter:

Final: Brevard County 5, Bradenton 3

Walk-off homer sinks 'Tees in 5-3 loss to Marauders

Hobbs Johnson goes seven strong in no-decision

BRADENTON, Fla. - Brevard County Manatees starter Hobbs Johnson was stellar over seven, but did not factor into the decision, as a walk-off home run by Justin Howard gave the Bradenton Marauders a 5-3 win on Sunday afternoon at McKechnie Field.

Johnson (10-7, 3.03 ERA) left in line for his 11th victory, but it was not meant to be. The left-hander pieced together his second impressive start in a row for the Manatees (20-19 second half, 56-49 overall). Johnson allowed just one run on six hits, walked two and struck out three.

After a rocky outing in Fort Myers on July 23, Johnson has allowed just four runs over 15 innings of work. That is good for a quality 2.40 earned run average.

However, Brevard County's bullpen could not hold the lead for the former North Carolina Tar Heel. After Brevard tacked on an insurance run in the top of the eighth on an RBI single by Alfredo Rodriguez, right-hander Martin Viramontes emerged from the bullpen with the 'Tees in front, 3-1.

The outing started off promising, as Viramontes got Adam Frazier to fly out to center and jumped ahead of the next batter, Walker Gourley, 0-2. After the reliever lost Gourley and walked him, Jose Osuna made him pay by lacing a line drive into the left field corner.

Gourley was able to hustle all the way home from first and Osuna chugged into second with an RBI double to cut Bradenton's (26-16, 61-50) deficit to 3-2. Following a strike out of Jordan Steranka for the second out, Eric Wood came through with two strikes.

After Wood drew the count even from 0-2, he smacked a single into center. Tyrone Taylor came up firing, but his throw sailed high. Osuna slid in safely to knot the game up at three.

Chad Pierce came out of the bullpen in the ninth to try and get the game to extras. With one out, Jin-De Jhang snapped a 0-for-16 streak at the plate with a bloop single into shallow center.

The game did not last much longer, as Howard, who entered the game in the eighth as a defensive replacement, crushed the first pitch he saw over the boardwalk in right for a walk-off, two-run home run.

Howard's blast was his first since being transferred to Bradenton from Double-A Altoona. It was also the third walk-off hit Pierce has allowed this season.

The Manatees may have had a chance to take the lead in the top of the ninth, but a controversial call ending the inning. With two outs, on the first pitch to Michael Reed, the runner at first, Orlando Arcia, broke for second.

The throw and tag were in time, but as Arcia slid into the glove of second baseman Max Moroff, the ball squirted out of his mitt. Base umpire Brennan Miller ruled that Arcia was out and Moroff lost the ball while trying to transfer it to his hand.

Manatees' manager Joe Ayrault came out to argue, but to no avail. He was tossed from the game for the second time this season and the inning came to an end.

Brevard initially grabbed the lead in the fourth. After Reed reached on an error by Bradenton's third baseman, Wood, he swiped second base. With one out, Mike Garza poked a single off the mound and into center field. Reed scored easily from third to give Brevard the advantage, 1-0.

In the following inning, the 'Tees struck again. Brevard County loaded the bases on a walk to Nathan Orf and a pair of singles by Taylor and Reed.

On a 1-0 pitch, Bradenton starter Shane Carle (1-2, 4.65) drilled Victor Roache in the hip to force home a run. Orf came home to push the Manatees in front, 2-0.

Carle did not have great control, but gave the Marauders length. The 10th round pick out of Long Beach State allowed two runs - one earned - on four hits over six innings. He walked two, hit two and struck out four.

Brevard was able to run wild on the base paths again. The Manatees were successful four-out-of-five times in the ballgame, the one exception being the Arcia caught stealing in the ninth. In their last seven games, the Manatees are 19-for-24 in stolen base attempts. That equals a 79.2% success rate and an average of 2.71 per game.

Brevard County will look earn a split of the four-game series tomorrow night at McKechnie Field with first pitch scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Damien Magnifico (7-6, 3.90), who struggled in first outing against the Marauders back in June, will get the start for the 'Tees. The man who is tied with Tyler Wagner for the league-lead in wins, Chad Kuhl (11-5, 3.51), will get the start for Bradenton.

Brevard County Box Score

Hobbs Johnson went seven innings and allowed just one run, but Martin Viramontes gave up two runs in an inning of work and Chad Pierce surrendered two more to take the loss. Michael Reed singled, walked and stole a base while Tyrone Taylor, Victor Roache, Mike Garza, Parker Berberet and Greg Hopkins each singled.

Sounds Fall To Zephyrs In 12 Innings, 4-3

Fiers Dominant Again In No-Decision For Nashville

Nashville Sounds

http://www.milb.com/assets/images/2/6/4/73876264/cuts/_MPS0615_t0wi1atc_b76j0j9g.jpg

(Mike Strasinger / Nashville Sounds)

METAIRIE, La. - The Nashville Sounds suffered a 4-3, 12-inning loss against the New Orleans Zephyrs on Sunday afternoon at Zephyr Field.

With the loss, the first-place Sounds (62-54) fell to 1-4 in extra-inning games and saw their division lead reduced to 1 1/2 games.

Nashville, which failed to protect 1-0 and 3-1 advantages on the day, has held a lead in 20 of its 33 road losses this season.

In the decisive bottom of the twelth, Sounds reliever Jose De La Torre, in his third inning of work for Nashville, faced a one-out, bases-loaded jam. After Rob Brantly ripped a double into the right field corner, skipper Rick Sweet ordered the next two batters to be walked intentionally to fill the bags and create a forceout at any base. Mark Canha lifted a fly ball down the left field line, which was caught in foul territory by Logan Schafer. However, Schafer stumbled in the bullpen and his rushed throw was offline as Brantly raced home to score the game-winning run.

The Sounds grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning. Shortstop Hector Gomez legged out a one-out triple to right off Z's starter Alex Sanabia and scored on Matt Pagnozzi's dribbler up the first base line.

New Orleans shortstop Juan Diaz knotted the contest at 1-1 in the home half of the fifth when he belted a solo homer to right off Mike Fiers that narrowly cleared the wall. The blast was the infielder's 11th of the year and only the third longball surrendered by Nashville pitching in the past 124 innings.

Fiers, who took a no-decision, worked his 11th quality start in 17 trips to the hill for Nashville this season. The right-hander held the Z's to one run on five hits while striking out seven batters and walking none in his six frames of action, lowering his ERA to 2.55 with the effort.

Nashville reclaimed the lead in the top of the eighth when Schafer, playing his first game with Nashville since being optioned from Milwaukee, greeted Zephyrs reliever Chaz Roe with a leadoff triple to right that nearly left the ballpark. Later in the frame, Jason Rogers plated Schafer with a ground-rule double to right-center then scored himself when Matt Clark followed with an RBI single to right that gave the Sounds a 3-1 advantage.

Rogers (2-for-5), who plated the go-ahead run for Nashville, has been swinging a hot stick of late, batting .329 (27-for-82) over his last 21 games and driving in a run in 12 of his last 19 contests.

New Orleans threatened in the bottom of the eighth. After Brent Leach retired the first batter of the frame, Arcenio Leon was summoned from the bullpen and promptly walked the bases loaded to leave a jam for Alfredo Figaro. Justin Bour made the Sounds pay as he greeted the right-hander with a two-run, game-tying single to center that made it a 3-3 contest. Figaro escaped further damage by striking out Kyle Jensen and Josh Rodriguez to leave the potential go-ahead run standing at third base.

The Sounds missed a great chance to reclaim the lead in the top of the eleventh after loading the bases with only one out against Arquimedes Caminero. However, the Zephyrs right-hander recovered to pop up Kevin Mattison then struck out Schafer to escape the jam.

The teams continue the series with a 7:00 p.m. meeting on Monday evening. Right-hander Ariel Pena (8-6, 4.36), who has won four of his last five starts, will man the bump for the Sounds to face former major leaguer Brad Penny (1-2, 4.91).

Nashville Boxscore

Well this one stinks, 2 walk off losses so far for the affiliates this evening. What more can be said about Mike Fiers in the minor leagues than has already been said?

Baby Brewers win 9-1. 4 pitchers combined to give up 1 unearned run. Wang went 1 1/3 innings. Surprisingly, this team is now only 1 game below .500. With all those blow outs, it seems like they are way worse than that. Jake Gatewood was 2-5 with 3 RBI's. Hopefully, this will get him going. Juan Ortiz homered in a 6 run ninth.
