Tyrone Taylor, cf, Brewers. Here’s an example of a talented player who might be in the process of taking that next step. Taylor went 11-for-24 (.458) with two extra-base hits, three walks and four stolen bases at high Class A Brevard County this week, but in the bigger picture the 20-year-old is trending upward in the second half, batting .343/.383/.476 with 13 extra-base hits and 11 steals in 36 games. He ranks first in the Florida State League with 43 extra-base hits.

Nice to see Jake Gatewood return to the Maryvale lineup tonight after a couple of games off.

Edit: Not quite as nice to see is Kodi Medeiros' very rough outing. Six hits, five runs, and couldn't get out of the 1st inning.

Not just “at Night” anymore.

Huntsville notes heading into Friday's game via Steve Jarnicki --

The Stars scored only one run in an 8-1 loss to Jacksonville, on a groundout by Nick Ramirez…When the Stars score just one run they are 2-13…In the last three games, the Stars have scored a grand total of four runs. All four runs have been contributed by either pitcher Jed Bradley or Ramirez, with Ramirez counting for both of the Stars runs each of the last two nights…In their last three games, the Stars only have one extra base hit and that’s the Ramirez home run Wednesday in the 4-1 loss to Chattanooga…The Stars went through a similar offensive funk not too long ago in Mississippi, where they scored three runs in three games June 30th-July 2nd. The Stars have only scored 48 runs in their last 15 games. In their last 15 games they are 6-9 and averaging a meager 3.2 runs per game…

The Stars played their 111th game and used their 111h different lineup…RHP Drew Gagnon allowed 3 ER in 5.2 IP. Huntsville starters in their last 16 starts are 5-7 with a 4.36 ERA (88.2 IP, 43 ER)… … C Robinzon Diaz went 1-2 with a single to extend his hitting streak to 13 consecutive games. The hitting streak is currently the longest streak in the Southern League. Diaz’s hitting streak is the longest hitting streak of any Stars player this year. It is also 6th longest hitting streak of the season. Rangel Ravelo of Birmingham owns the longest hitting streak at 26 straight games…Diaz continues to excel at Joe Davis Stadium. All nine of his RBI have come in Huntsville. Diaz is batting .388 at home, compared to .214 on the road…2B Nick Shaw went 1-3. Since the All-Star break, Shaw is batting .340 with 14 RBI in 29 games. Shaw has the 4th best batting average in the Southern League during the second half of the season. Jose Peraza of Mississippi has the highest batting average in the second half of the season at .362. When Shaw plays 2B, he is hitting .358 compared to just .231 when he plays SS. Shaw, enters tonight on a four game hitting streak and has hit safely in nine of his last ten games…

OF Kentrail Davis went 1-3 and is now 6 for his 54 ( .111 ) in his last twenty games. After Davis produced the 11th best batting average in the entire Southern League in June with a .340 batting average, Davis turned in the lowest batting average amongst all players in the Southern League in July with a .143 batting average with just 6 RBI…SS Yadiel Rivera went 0-3. In his last 19 games, Rivera is batting .355 (22-62) with 2 RBI. Rivera’s hot hitting started on July 10th…

Since the Stars clinched the 1st half championship they’ve gone 25-27.

Final: Brevard County 2, Bradenton 3

'Tees late rally falls short in 3-2 loss to Bradenton

Manatees put tying run in scoring position, but can't finish comeback

By Justin Rocke / Brevard County Manatees

BRADENTON, Fla. - Down three runs going to the ninth, the Brevard County Manatees rallied to pull within one. However, they could not complete the comeback, as the Bradenton Marauders emerged victorious, 3-2 on Friday night at McKechnie Field.

With the Manatees (19-18 second half, 55-48 overall) trailing 3-0, Mike Garza reached on a walk and Brandon Macias got on board with a single in the top of the ninth. With runners on the corners, Nathan Orf stepped to the plate with two down. On a 1-0 pitch from side-arming left-hander Josh Smith, Orf cranked a ball down the right field line.

Garza scored easily from third and Macias chugged home from first. Orf was in at second with a two-run double to trim the Marauders (25-15, 60-49) lead to 3-2.

The next batter, Orlando Arcia, came up with a chance to deliver the game-tying blow, but could not connect on the big base-hit. After working the count full, Arcia struck out swinging against Smith to end the ballgame.

Despite the loss, the two runs in the ninth snapped two big streaks for either side. Orf's two-run base knock snapped the 'Tees 28-plus scoreless inning streak, which started on Tuesday night against Jupiter. In the process, Bradenton's 19-inning scoreless streak was halted, as well.

Another big streak came to the end in the final frame too. Macias' single with Garza at second ended a streak of 27-consecutive outs with runners in scoring position for Brevard County.

The Marauders gave themselves a cushion early, scoring all three of their runs in the first two innings.

Manatees' starter Austin Ross (7-5, 3.76 ERA) retired the first two batters he faced, but Bradenton rallied. Three straight singles from Jose Osuna, Jordan Steranka and Eric Wood brought home a run to give the Marauders the early lead, 1-0.

Then Ross began to struggle with his control. Back-to-back walks to Justin Howard and Jin-De Jhang forced home another run to put Bradenton up 2-0.

In the second, the Marauders put runners at first courtesy of a walk to Raul Fortunato and single by Max Moroff. With one out, Osuna lofted a towering, high fly ball to left field.

With the wind blowing out to right, the ball died at the warning track. Victor Roache made the catch, but Fortunato tagged and scored from third to extend the Bradenton lead to three.

Ross settled down after that, as he finished his night with three straight scoreless innings. The former LSU Tiger allowed just two more baserunners, as he took his fourth consecutive loss. Ross finished the evening with three runs allowed on five hits. He walked four and struck out four.

Despite a high pitch count, Marauders starter and ace Tyler Glasnow (8-5, 1.63) dominated over six innings. The top prospect no-hit the 'Tees into the fifth, but did have issues with his location.

Glasnow allowed just two hits, but walked four. He struck out five, as he recorded his eighth win of the year. The right-hander lowered his ERA to 1.63, good for second-best in the league behind Brevard's Tyler Wagner (10-4, 1.53).

Wagner will take the mound tomorrow to try and put an end to the Manatees three-game losing streak. First pitch at McKechnie Field is slated for 6:30 p.m. Jason Creasy (6-6, 3.62) will get the start for Bradenton and try to be the first pitcher to out duel Wagner since June 3.

An ugly, ugly game for Medeiros. Been a pretty rough season for him so far, although the sample size is small.

Meanwhile Grant Holmes has given up 5 runs in 20 innings, is sporting an .850 WHIP, 10.4 SO/9, 2.2 BB/9, and a sparkling 4.6 SO/BB. Ultimately all that matters is who has the best MLB career but I would have hoped for more from the #12 overall pick to this point. I'm certainly not ready to jump ship yet, Jordan Yamamoto has also struggled out of the gate. Hopefully both players get their feet underneath them and start their ascensions towards Milwaukee next season.

Of the other players I liked for that #12 pick, Kyle Freeland didn't make it to us but has been spectacular in the Pioneer League and Sean Newcomb hasn't thrown a pitch in live action yet.

Final: Missoula 4, Helena 0

Brewers lose 6th straight on road, 4-0

By Dustin Daniel / Helena Brewers

The Helena Brewers (3-4) were shut out by the Missoula Osprey (4-3) on Friday, 4-0 at Ogren Park Allegiance Field in Missoula.

Both starters were lights out with Cy Sneed pitching five shutout innings for Helena. He would strike out three batters and allow five hits in his best outing of the year.

Tyler Bolton (4-3) would up the ante, going seven innings, giving up just two hits and striking out two.

All of Missoula's runs came off reliever Luis Ortega (3-5) who gave up two in the seventh and two in the eighth.

Tyler Humphreys hit an RBI double to score Dane McFarland and Sergio Alcantara hit a sacrifice fly to deep left to score B.J. Lopez in the seventh. In the eighth, Justin Williams scored on a wild pitch and Trevor Mitsui came in on an RBI groundout from Stewart Ijames. Williams went 1-for-3 extending his hitting streak to 27 games.

It was the third time this season that the Brewers have been shut out and their sixth consecutive loss on the road.

The Brewers and Osprey will face off in the finale of their two-game set Saturday from Missoula. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.

Helena Box Score

Not much to report offensively tonight as the Brewers scored 0 runs on 5 hits. There were no extra base hits and no multi-hit games for Helena. They finished 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position. Cy Sneed bounced back with a nice outing as detailed above. Five innings pitched equals Sneed's longest outing of the season.

Rattlers 5-1 win over Peoria is Taylor-Made

Brennan hits grand slam, Williams strikes out 11

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

Taylor Williams allowed one hit and struck out eleven on Friday night against the Peoria Chiefs. Williams earned his eighth win of the season as the Rattlers won 5-1. (Ann Mollica/Wisconsin Timber Rattlers)

GRAND CHUTE, WI - Taylor Brennan gave the Timber Rattlers a big lead and Taylor Williams made sure the Peoria Chiefs couldn't get going on Friday night at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium. Brennan hit a grand slam in a five-run second inning and Williams struck out eleven over seven innings in Wisconsin's 5-1 victory over the Chiefs. The Rattlers have won four straight games.

The Rattlers (59-50 overall, 23-17 second half) scored all the runs they would need in the second inning. Rafael Neda reached on an error with one out. Omar Garcia walked. Then, Garcia beat out a force play at second on a slow chopper to third off the bat of Jose Pena. That loaded the bases for Steve Halcomb to face Peoria starter Luis Perdomo. Halcomb drew a walk on a 3-1 pitch to force in Neda for a 1-0 lead.

Brennan was next and he lined an 0-1 pitch from Perdomo over the wall in left for a grand slam and a 5-0 lead. The bases loaded homer was the second of the season for Brennan, who has tied Chris Snelling (2000), Michael Cox (2004), and Clint Coulter (2014) for the most grand slams in a season by a Timber Rattler.

Brennan's grand slam was also the fifth of the season by a Timber Rattler to set a franchise record for slams in a single season. Brennan is 6-for-13, 3 2Bs, 2HRs, 2BBs, 21 RBI with the bases loaded this season.

Williams allowed a leadoff double to Ronald Castillo in the second inning. That was it. The Wisconsin right-hander retired 21 of the 22 Peoria batters he faced - including the final eighteen in order - on Friday night. He didn't walk a batter and struck out eleven. The eleven strikeouts set a new single game high as a professional for Williams who is now 8-1 on the season.

The Chiefs (58-51, 21-19) got their lone run of the game in the top of the ninth against Wisconsin reliever Chad Thompson. Vaughn Bryan drew a walk and went to second on defensive indifference. CJ McElroy, Jr. blooped a single into left to put runners at the corners. Justin Ringo singled to right-center to knock in Bryan. Thompson got a strikeout for the second out, but walked Rowan Wick to load the bases and bring the tying run to the plate. Thompson got the final out of the game on a routine fly ball to center.

Game two of the series is Saturday night. Preston Gainey (3-6, 4.16) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Rob Kaminsky (5-2, 1.50) will make the start for the Chiefs. Game time is 6:35pm.

There has been a lot of excitement and talk about the Milwaukee Bucks this summer and they will be bringing that excitement to Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium for Milwaukee Bucks Night. Bango, the Milwaukee Bucks Dancers, and the Milwaukee Bucks Grand Dancers will at the ballpark to pump up the jam. Play Potawatomi Bingo Casino Baseball Bingo during the game and stick around for a slam dunk of a postgame fireworks display presented by FOX 11!

If you can't make it out to the ballpark, there are many ways to catch the action. MyNEW32's Sports Showdown will have the television broadcast starting at 6:30pm. The radio broadcast is available on AM1280, WNAM and IHeartRadio starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 6:15pm. The game is also available to subscribers of MiLB.TV.

The league stat page is already updated even though Taylor's personal page isn't. Williams is currently 3rd in ERA, 10th in IP (which is awesome considering the tandem), 4th in SO, and is the league leader in WHIP at 0.94. He's looking like a guy who's going to split time between 2 levels next year.

The Rattlers managed just 5 hits but Taylor Brennan (batting leadoff) sure made his count. David Denson also chipped in a double.

Sorry Steve, but starting RHP Jacob Barnes has to get a mention after a fantastic start -- 6 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 HBP, 4 K.

Same goes for RHP Greg Holle, who tossed three scoreless.

Stars turned four double plays.

Kentrail Davis doubled twice for the Stars' only multi-hit game (in 13 innings, so that won't cut it).

Rogers Lifts Sounds To Win Opener, 2-1

Nashville's Rob Wooten Escapes 7th Inning Jam for Save

Nashville Sounds

http://www.milb.com/assets/images/4/8/2/85814482/cuts/Jason_Rogers_627_3_z19d4h17_r7bqhtsh.jpg

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The first-place Nashville Sounds (61-52) put together a late rally that was capped off by Jason Rogers' game-winning home run to defeat the Colorado Springs Sky Sox 2-1 in the first game of a doubleheader Friday night at Security Service Field.

Rogers' solo home run, his fourth of the season and first on the road, was just fair over the left-field wall and broke the 1-1 tie.

The team was able to plate the game-tying run in the 6th inning, when Pete Orr grounded into a force out at second with the bases loaded that scored Hector Gomez, 2-for-4, from third.

The Sounds offense had plenty of chances to score with baserunners in every inning, but the team finished 0-for-13 with runners in scoring position and left 10 runners on base.

Sounds starter Taylor Jungmann got off to a slow start, walking his first three batters, and Sky Sox outfielder Matt McBride made him pay by driving a double off the wall in left field to give Colorado Springs a 1-0 lead in the game's initial frame.

Jungmann settled in, retiring a stretch of eight consecutive batters from the 2nd to 4th inning to keep the Sounds in the game. The right-hander limited the Sky Sox to two hits in five innings of work before reliever Arcenio Leon (1-2) entered the game.

Leon picked up the win in his clean inning of work, while closer Rob Wooten had to work out of a 7th inning that started with two runners in scoring position and no outs. Wooten retired his three with a groundout and two bases-loaded strikeouts for his 8th save of the season.

The Sounds will send RHP Kyle Heckathorn (3-2, 6.18) to the hill in game two against RHP Leuris Gomez (1-1, 5.52). Jeff Hem will have the call on 102.5 The GAME.

Nashville Game1 Boxscore

Taylor Jungmann just isn't able to get through 6 with any consistency yet at this level. Outside of the 1st today he pitched well enough to do so though, he was only at 73 pitches when he was pulled for the Colorado 6th. Manager Rick Sweet was playing for the win and pinch hit for him in the middle of the 1 run rally during Nashville's top half of the inning. Taylor added a pick off to his 4 BBs and 4 SOs in the contest.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - In a complete flip from a game played hours before, the first-place Nashville Sounds (61-53) fell victim to a late rally, losing in walk-off fashion to the Colorado Springs Sky Sox (47-66) 1-0 in Game 2 of a doubleheader at Security Service Field on Friday night.

Like in Game 1, neither team was able to push a run across in the first six innings. Sounds starter Kyle Heckathorn (3-2) provided another solid outing in a spot start, pitching three shutout innings and allowing only three hits. Jose De La Torre followed with two innings of scoreless relief, giving him six straight appearances without allowing a run.

The Sounds had a chance to open the scoring when Sean Halton hit a one-out triple in the top of the second, but he would be stranded to keep the game scoreless. Halton was the only Sounds player to record multiple hits in the game.

The Nashville found itself in business again in the top of the fifth when Hector Gomez and Shawn Zarraga led off the inning with walks. Sky Sox reliever Juan Nicasio benefitted from a stroke of luck when Kevin Mattison followed with a hard line drive that resulted in a double play to end the threat.

Reliever Alfredo Figaro ran into trouble in the bottom of the seventh, allowing a pair of singles to lead off the inning. After recording outs on a sacrifice bunt and strikeout, he then walked Rafael Ynoa intentionally to set up a force at any base. Cristhian Adames then became the hero, coming up with the big hit to seal a loss for Nashville.

The run scored by Colorado Springs snapped the Sounds' streak of 14.2 consecutive scoreless innings.

The Sounds will now begin the second half of their road trip Saturday night in New Orleans, with RHP Michael Blazek (1-4, 4.15) taking the hill for Nashville against Zephyrs RHP Anthony DeSclafani (2-2, 3.24). First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.

Nashvile Game2 Boxscore

I admit that I don't find Kyle Heckathorn starting games in AAA to be particularly invigorating at this point, but he got the job done and has been pitching much better over his last 10 appearances.

The Sounds only put 4 hits on the board, so Sean Halton's (2-4) effort was half of the team's offensive output... boo.
