The Brewers bats came to life as they racked up 14 runs on 14 hits to beat the Blue Jays 14-2. Juan De Los Santos led the way, going 3-for-5. Yerald Martinez, Nicolas Pierre and Johel Atencio singled and doubled and Roosevert Chal went 2-for-3 and drew a walk. Joan De La Cruz started and went six innings, allowing just an unearned run to notch the win and Carlos Luna tossed the final three innings to earn the save. Joantgel Segovia left the game after being hit by a pitch in the first inning.

Mustangs alone in 1st with 7-3 win

The Helena Brewers (3-3) fell to the Billings Mustangs (4-2) on Thursday 7-3 in a battle for first place.

 

The Mustangs took to scoring early and never trailed in the game.

 

Taylor Sparks, Aristedes Aquino and Garrett Boulware homered in the first off Jorge Ortega (2-2) to give the Mustangs an early 4-0 lead. Ortega would go four innings, giving up four runs on five hits and striking out two.

 

The Brewers responded in the bottom of the first with two runs of their own. Francisco Castillo led off with a double and scored on the RBI single of Mitch Meyer. Meyer accounted for both of the Brewers' RBI in the game. Castillo was 2-for-4 with two doubles.

 

Mustangs pitching was dominant throughout. Luke Moran (2-4) threw six innings of three-run baseball, striking out seven, and Brian Hunter threw two perfect innings of relief to close the game.

 

The Brewers now head to Missoula to take on the Osprey in a two-game series. First pitch tomorrow from Allegiance Field is set for 7:05 p.m.

Brandon Diaz was 1-for-4 on the night with stole two bases and two runs scored. Tucker Neuhaus was 2-for-4 and has now crept ever so closely to the Mendoza line as he raises his BA to .197 on the season.

Lopez fans eight, but 'Tees fall to Jupiter

VIERA, Fla. - Despite a terrific start by Jorge Lopez, in which the starter recorded a season-high eight strikeouts, the Brevard County Manatees fell to the Jupiter Hammerheads on Thursday night at Space Coast Stadium, 1-0.

 

Lopez (8-7, 4.09 ERA) was tremendous over seven innings, but Jupiter scratched one run across against the right-hander in the fifth. With one out, Blake Barber hit a high-bouncing ground ball to second baseman Nathan Orf. The second hop soared over the glove of a leaping Orf and into right field for a single.

 

The next Hammerheads hitter burned Brevard County (19-17 second half, 55-47 overall). Justin Bohn laced a line drive into the left-center field gap. Barber scored all the way from first and Bohn chugged to third and slid in safely with an RBI triple to give Jupiter (12-27, 39-69) a 1-0 lead.

 

That triple was the only mistake Lopez made all night. Despite taking the loss, Lopez only allowed one run on four hits in his seven innings of work. The starter walked three and recorded at least one strikeout in each of his first five innings.

 

Lopez's most impressive frame came in the top of the second. After striking out the leadoff man, Lopez allowed Avery Romero to double and then walked the next two men to load the bases. The Manatees' starter escaped the bases-loaded jam, however, as he struck out Cody Keefer and Barber to end the inning and keep the game scoreless.

 

Brevard County had its best opportunity to score in the bottom half of that second inning. Jupiter starter Scott Lyman got the first two 'Tees to ground out, but then walked Victor Roache, Alfredo Rodriguez and Parker Berberet to load up the bases.

 

Greg Hopkins came up with a chance to give the Manatees the first run of the game and he came dangerously close. The right-handed hitter slammed a line drive, but it was right at the first baseman. Viosergy Rosa squeezed the ball in his glove and the Hammerheads got out of the inning, unscathed.

 

The 'Tees loaded the bases again in the eighth, but could not come up with a run. Orlando Arcia led off with a single and Tyrone Taylor followed with a double down the left field line to put runners on second and third. After Hammerheads reliever Reid Redman struck out the next Brevard County hitter, the Hammerheads elected to intentionally walk Mike Garza to load the bases. The move paid off for Jupiter, as Redman recorded a strikeout and a fly out to end the frame.

 

Once again, the 'Tees had a shot in the ninth. Berberet started the frame against Jupiter closer Sean Donatello by hustling to first to beat out an infield single. Jose Sermo came in to pinch run and Hopkins laid down a sacrifice bunt to move the runner up to second base.

 

Orf came up with the tying run in scoring position and hit a soft ground ball in front of home. Donatello fielded it and saw that Sermo had ranged far off of second base. The pitcher caught Sermo in a rundown between second and third, and eventually the third baseman Barber tagged him out.

 

During the rundown, Orf made a heads-up baserunning play and moved up to second base. That gave Brevard County another quality shot at tying the game with a runner in scoring position and two outs. Donatello, however, was able to strike out Arcia to end the game and seal his fourth save of the season.

 

Lyman (5-8, 2.89 ERA) picked up the win with six shutout innings. The righty only allowed four hits and left five Manatees stranded in scoring position. Lyman struck out two and walked three.

 

The Manatees suffered a shutout loss for the second consecutive night and settled for a 2-2 series split with Jupiter. Brevard County hits the road on Friday for another four-game set against a Florida State League South Division, as the Manatees prepare to take on the Bradenton Marauders. Austin Ross (7-4, 3.66 ERA) is scheduled to start for the 'Tees against Tyler Glasnow (7-5, 1.74 ERA). First pitch at McKechnie Field is slated for 6:30 p.m.

Stars Drop Opener To Suns

Huntsville, AL - Jacksonville Suns RHP Jose Urena (10-7), the ninth ranked pitching prospect in the Miami Marlins system, threw seven shutout innings leading his Jacksonville Suns past the Huntsville Stars 8-1 Thursday night at Joe Davis Stadium.

 

Isaac Galloway led the Suns offense with a 3-5 performance and had 4 RBI.

 

Drew Gagnon (7-6), the Huntsville starter, allowed six runs three earned) in his 5.2 innings.

 

The Suns took a 2-0 lead off Gagnon in the top of the fourth. With two outs and runners at second and third base, Gagnon issued a wild pitch that allowed J.T. Realmuto to score for the first run. Galloway then singled into left which scored Brent Keys.

 

In the top of the sixth, the Suns added to their lead. Brady Shoemaker singled. Joe Benson then reached on a fielding error by third baseman Robinzon Diaz.

 

Two batters later, Galloway drilled a two-run triple down the left field line making it 4-0. The pitcher then helped himself out as Urena tripled to shallow right as Kentrail Davis couldn't make the diving catch. Galloway scored on the triple giving Jacksonville a 5-0 advantage.

 

Austin Nola also provided an rbi single in the four-run sixth for a 6-0 lead.

 

The Suns scored their final two runs in the eighth against reliever Tommy Toledo.

 

Galloway extended the lead to 7-0 with an RBI double and Nola singled home Galloway on a single, making it 8-0 Suns.

 

Urena, who allowed just five hits in his seven frames, turned it over to the Suns bullpen to try and keep the shutout intact.

 

The Stars were able to avoid the shutout in the ninth. With one out, Nick Ramirez grounded out to second base off Suns reliever Jheyson Manzueta. Ramirez's groundout scored Nick Shaw to make it 8-1.

 

The Stars (19-22, 65-46) trail the Suns (26-15, 62-49) 1-0 in their five game series which continues Friday night. The Stars will have RHP Jacob Barnes (2-5, 5.01) on the mound. Jacksonville will send RHP James Nygren (3-2, 3.55) to the hill. The game can be heard starting at 6:15 PM CDT on 92.9 FM, 1450 AM and wtkiradio.com.

Late Rattler rally beats Kane County 7-3

Wisconsin completes the sweep of Cougars

GRAND CHUTE, WI - Omar Garcia tripled in two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to break a 3-3 tie and send the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers to a 7-3 victory over the Kane County Cougars Thursday night at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium. The win gave the Rattlers a three-game sweep of the Cougars.

 

Kane County (67-42 overall, 22-17 second half) scored an unearned run in the top of the first inning. Chesny Young singled to start the game. An error on a potential double play ball off the bat of Carlos Penalver allowed Young to go to third. Ben Carhart's sacrifice fly drove in Young for a 1-0 lead.

 

The Cougars added another unearned run in the top of the fourth inning. Jefferey Baez blooped a double to right and it was misplayed to allow him to take third base. Kevin Brown's RBI grounder to short drove in Baez for a 2-0 lead.

 

Wisconsin (58-50, 22-17) rallied to tie the game in the bottom of the fifth inning. Clint Coulter drew a leadoff walk and was sacrificed to second base on a bunt by Garcia. Dustin DeMuth drove in Coulter with a double to left, Wisconsin's first hit in the game off Kane County starter Ben Wells.

 

Jose Pena followed with a single to move Demuth to third. Angel Ortega's sacrifice fly drove in DeMuth with the tying run.

 

The Timber Rattlers took the lead without getting a hit in the bottom of the sixth. Taylor Brennan drew a leadoff walk, but was erased on a force play as Chris McFarland reached on a fielder's choice. Michael Ratterree was hit by a pitch and David Denson reached on an error to load the bases. Coulter drew a walk to force in McFarland and the Rattlers were up 3-2.

 

Wisconsin starter Clint Terry turned the lead over to Barrett Astin in the top of the seventh. Terry allowed two unearned runs on five hits, walked two, and struck out fout.

 

Kane County almost tied the game in the seventh. Carlos Penalver was at first with two outs. Ben Carhart sent a tough grounder to short and the throw to first was wild. Penalver raced around to third and headed for the plate as first baseman David Denson tracked down the ball on the warning track in front of the seats along the Kane County dugout. Denson threw a strike to the plate that beat Penalver. Coulter made the tag for the third out of the inning.

 

But, the Cougars would tie the game in the top of the seventh inning. Jeimer Candelario singles with one out. Cael Brockmeyer doubled to the gap in right-center and Candelario scored without a play to even the score 3-3.

 

Denson was at first base with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning and stole second, his second steal of the season. Then, Coulter drew a walk, his third free pass of the game. Garcia came to the plate and he wasn't bunting this time. The Rattlers centerfielder lined a 1-0 pitch from reliever Zak Hermans just fair down the line in right for a triple to drive in both Denson and Coulter for a 5-3 lead.

 

Wisconsin picked up insurance runs on RBI singles by DeMuth and Pena and were up 7-3 heading to the ninth inning.

 

Astin shutdown the Cougars 1-2-3 in the ninth to close out the three-game sweep.

 

The win put the Timber Rattlers eight games over .500 for the first time this season. The loss was the sixth straight for Kane County.

 

The Timber Rattlers begin a three-game series with the Peoria Chiefs on Friday night at 7:05pm. Taylor Williams (7-1, 2.52) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers in game one. Rob Perdomo (2-1, 4.82) is set to start for the Chiefs.

 

Ducks Unlimited presents Outdoors Night on Friday night. Timber Rattlers players and coaches will be wearing jerseys with a special outdoors camouflage pattern. These jerseys will be available in a silent auction during the game with the proceeds going to Ducks Unlimited. The first 500 fans to attend the game will receive a flashlight in the shape of a duck call from Ducks Unlimited.

 

All children 12 and under receive a free hot dog and soda as part of North Shore Bank/Y100 Family night. There will be a postgame fireworks display. Then, kids 14 and under may participate in Kids Run the Bases thanks to Molina Healthcare after the fireworks. Plus, Potawatomi Bingo Casino presents Baseball Bingo, a chance to win prizes by playing a baseball-themed bingo game.

I will admit to being worried about getting no hit by a scrub pitcher through the first 4 innings, I had to double check Ben Wells twice to make sure I had the correct "Wells". As long as I mentioned it he was the Cubs' 28th ranked prospect coming into the season and he's way out of the top 30 now with Russell and the most recent draft.

 

I feel bad for mentioning this repeatedly but Clint Terry doesn't have a live arm but he sure knows how to pitch.

 

Dustin DeMuth (2-4,2B) and Jose Pena (2-3,BB) had the multi-hit games for the Rattlers.

Sounds Shut Out In Continued Game, 6-0

Nashville Sounds

 

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The first-place Nashville Sounds (59-52) never got the offense going in the continuation of Wednesday's suspended game, falling 6-0 to the Colorado Springs Sky Sox Thursday evening at Security Service Field.

 

The game, which began on Wednesday as the first part of a doubleheader, picked up in the top of the third inning with the Sky Sox leading 2-0 courtesy of a two-run second inning against rehabbing Brewers pitcher Jim Henderson (0-1).

 

Henderson allowed Ryan Wheeler a solo home run and then left the bases loaded with two outs for reliever Jose De La Torre. Henderson tossed 21 pitches, 11 for strikes, in the losing effort and was charged with two runs after De La Torre chucked a wild pitch to score one of his inherited runners.

 

The rain proved too much for the field in the third inning, at which point the suspension was called. Play resumed at 6:00 PM Thursday night with Johnnie Lowe making the start for Nashville.

 

Lowe allowed one run to Colorado Springs in his three innings of work as Rafael Ynoa slapped a single through the hole at second in the fourth inning.

 

In the sixth, reliever Brent Leach surrendered three runs to the Sky Sox. First baseman Kyle Parker drove an RBI single up the middle for the first run, which was followed by a run-scoring throwing error committed by Leach as he tried to start a double-play at second.

 

Infielder Angelys Nina hit into an RBI groundout to score Parker from third base for the Sky Sox final run of the contest.

 

Nashville finished with six hits, led by Caleb Gindl, who went 2-for-3. Irving Falu, Jason Rogers, Matt Pagnozzi and Hector Gomez also recorded base knocks.

 

RHP Donovan Hand will make the start for Nashville in game two opposite the Sky Sox RHP Dan Houston. Jeff Hem will have the call on 102.5 The GAME.

Sounds Rally Over Sky Sox, 5-4

Nashville Erases Two Late Deficits In Win

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- The first-place Nashville Sounds (60-52) fought back from two late deficits before finally holding on for a 5-4 win over the Colorado Springs Sky Sox (46-65) in Game 2 of a doubleheader at Security Service Field on Thursday night.

 

The win prevented Nashville from being swept in a twinbill for the first time in 2014, and the Sounds now hold a 2-0-3 record in doubleheaders this season. The win also gives Nashville seven victories in its last nine games.

 

Trailing 4-3 in the final inning of the seven-frame contest, the Sounds got a rally started when a pitch hit catcher Shawn Zarraga to lead off the inning. Pinch runner Lucas May then advanced on a sacrifice bunt and groundout before Sean Halton came up with a two-out double to tie the game. Nashville then took the lead when catcher Dustin Garneau threw away a Pete Orr dribbler that allowed Halton to score.

 

Sounds starter Donovan Hand (1-6) twirled another masterful start, pitching 4.2 innings, but left the game with two runners on base and the score tied at 0-0 in the bottom of the fifth. Dustin Molleken came in and allowed a two-run triple to Jason Pridie, with both runs charged to Hand to snap his string of 10 consecutive innings without allowing a run. Despite allowing a pair of runs on three hits, Hand's ERA since joining the rotation is 2.07 (3er/13ip) in three starts.

 

Colorado Springs tacked on another run shortly after, when Molleken threw a wild pitch to allow Pridie to score.

 

Nashville responded with another two-out rally in the top of the sixth that was sparked by a Eugenio Velez single. After taking two bases on a wild pitch by reliever Christian Friedrich, Velez scored on a triple by Jason Rogers. Matt Clark then tied the game with a home run to right field, his fourth of the season.

 

The Sky Sox took back the lead off of Molleken again in the bottom of the sixth, when Drew Garcia came through with a one-out RBI single that scored Garneau to give Colorado Springs a 4-3 advantage.

 

Once the Sounds jumped ahead in the top of the seventh, Rob Wooten secured the important victory with a scoreless bottom half to pick up his seventh save of the season.

 

The Sounds and Sky Sox have another doubleheader on tap Friday, with Nashville RHP Taylor Jungmann (5-5, 5.13) squaring off against RHP Jair Jurrjens (0-2, 3.46) in Game 1, which is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. CT. Sounds RHP Kyle Heckathorn (3-2, 6.18) will follow in Game 2 against RHP Leuris Gomez (1-1, 5.52).

Aquino, Mustangs power past Brewers

The Billings Mustangs blasted three home runs in the first five at-bats to open the game against the Helena Brewers on Thursday, pushing the visitors to a 7-3 victory at Kindrick Legion Field.

 

With one out in the top of the first inning, Billings’ Taylor Sparks and Aristides Aquino belted back-to-back solo homers. Then, with Brian O’Grady aboard on a walk, Garrett Boulware lofted a two-run shot over the left-field fence and the visitors had a 4-0 lead before starting pitcher Jorge Ortega could even get the second out of the game.

 

But then Ortega settled down and held the Mustangs scoreless over the next 3 2/3 innings before being relieved by Brandon Moore in the fifth.

 

Ortega overcame adversity twice during the night — the three-homer opening stanza, and a hard comebacker in the third frame.

 

With Mustang runners on first and second and none down, O’Grady lined a shot that bounced off the Brewer hurler’s left kneecap. Ortega retrieved the ball and got his man at first — with both runners advancing — but then fell to the ground face first for several moments.

 

After regaining his feet and taking a few warm-up pitches, he proceeded to work his way out of the jam with a pop fly to shortstop and a strikeout.

 

Despite the shocking start, Helena answered right back in the bottom of the first with two runs on a double by Francisco Castillo and singles by Brandon Diaz and Mitch Meyer.

 

Billings, though, added a run in the fifth and two in the sixth to extend its advantage to 7-2.

 

The hosts made it 7-3 in the bottom of the sixth when Diaz reached on an error, stole second, went to third on a wild pitch and came home on Meyer’s groundout RBI.

 

Other than the big hole the Brewers found themselves in to start things out, the game was a well-pitched, well-played contest.

 

The Mustangs used three pitchers on the night: Luke Moran, Jordan Remer and Brian Hunter. Moran went the first six frames, giving up five hits and three runs with seven strikeouts and no walks to earn the win. Hunter closed out the final two stanzas of hitless ball to cement the victory.

 

Ryan Deeter relieved the last two innings for Helena, allowing no hits and fanning three. Ortega took the loss.

 

The Magic City crew outhit the Brewers 10-6, led by Sparks who went 3 for 5 with a double, a homer and two runs scored. Aquino (home run, two RBIs) and Argenis Aldazaro had two hits apiece.

 

It was Aquino’s 12th home run and 40th and 41st RBIs of the year. The 20-year old right fielder from Santo Domingo leads the Pioneer League in both categories.

 

Both teams committed just one error each.

 

The loss concluded the four-game, home-and-home set with Billings. Helena, now 3-3 in the second half of the season, will travel to Missoula today for the start of a long road trip. After a pair of games against the Osprey, the Brewers get one day off before a four-game series at Idaho Falls and a three-game stretch at Ogden. After another one-day break, they will finally play in front of the home crowd again on Tuesday, Aug. 12.

RHP Milton Gomez hit hard, now has surrendered 30 runs (18 earned) in 33.2 innings; RHP Gian Rizzo (check career numbers) doesn't walk anybody (hardly), but maybe that's a bit of a problem, ironically. LHP Max Walla bounced back in this one, stranding two runners and tossing an additional scoreless inning.

 

SS Jake Gatewood missed a 2nd game in a row.

 

LF Troy Stokes had two of the team's seven hits. The team drew no walks.
